Chapter 32: An offer she can't refuse

Eda dashed through the city of bonesborough. She was late as always and knew the empress would not like to be kept waiting.
Eda knew she was on thin ice with her since the fact that she was the one who destroyed the comformitorium racket. The empress is a lot of bad things… but stupid ain't one of them.
The worse part is she had to give luca the cold shoulder as she was too nervous about today… she didn't even tell lilith where she was going.
"M-made it." eda panted, bending over to breath. She was in front of a bakery/restuarant in the middle of bonesborough. It was one of eda's favorite places and the empress always picked here for their meeting.
The witch entered the shop to see that the empress had not arrived yet. A sigh of relief exited eda's lungs as she took a seat in a far away booth.
She tapped her foot against the stone floor anxiously.
It was not too long before the door opened and in came the empress flanked by two of her champions Lenore and Odalia.
She did that on purpose. Eda knew about the incident in the bathhouse and she had a fireball with both those bitches names on it.
The empress instructed them to sit down on the opposite side of the store while she walked toward eda.
Eda noted that the empress still cut an imposing figure. To the naked eye she looked like a skinny woman with a strange costume. But eda saw her for what she really was… a super powerful monster witch.
Eda didn't even know if the empress was a witch in the sense that she and her shared a race but she knew that she had access to all nine of the coven systems magic along with other magics systems she's never seen before.
She took her seat across from eda and sat there.
"Eda clawthorne, a pleasure as always." The empress said in her serpent like voice.
Eda knew that the mask must have a voice amplifier with other enchantments on it.
"Same your highness… how has your day been?"
"It has been good… and you?"
"Hectic, me and my sister are busy housecleaning."
"withall the money I give you… you'd think you could hire a housekeeper." the empress said a sharp wit behind her voice.
You mean a spy that you could manipualte. Eda thought trying not to show her displeasure.
"I'm fine… it keeps me busy from the boredom."
"Oh, I'd think you're teaching position would be more important."
"Teaching position? I'm no teacher…"
"Eda, I know about your two students… luca and luz."
Eda's eyes widened as she heard that. "How?' she asked her teeth grinding as she glared at the witch… her fists clenched under the table.
"I've always know eda, I knew that when I sent my champions to receive him… that it was possible he'd end up in your care."
"you mean when you sent them to murder his mom and sister," Eda growled her protective instincts kicking in.
The empress was silent for but a moment before she lifted a finger a small plater of brownies with screaming faces on it appeared. "Have a brownie eda, it will calm you."
"I don' wa–" Eda felt a sharp spike in her head as she began to ache.
"I insist, don't make me ask again." the empress had kept her calm tone and it shook eda to her core.
The witch reluctantly took a bite of the brown and found they tasted great… they were her favorite after all.
"Better now?"
"You're still a murderer."
"I understand your frustration. My champions I have found cannot be trusted with such delicate work… I see that now."
"you're the one who gave the order…"
"I was, but I wanted the girl and mother brought to me alive… so that I may turn them into loyal servants of Luca… just like the angels you liberated."
"you mean the slaves you brainwashed."
"That is such an ugly term… what have I ever done to earn such unkind words."
"where do I start?"
"How about when I cured your curse."
"After you killed belos."
"who was a worse dictator then I."

Eda glared at the empress… she had an answer for everything that eda threw at her and all with a calm expression. Eda normally could get under anyones skin especially tyrants like the empress.. but she never cracked… it was like she knew what eda was going to say and had mentally prepared for it.
"Edalyn, have I ever been unkind to you?"
"why are you asking me that?"
"Because it seems you are angry at me… when I have given you everything you'd ever desire."
"You know what you did… I will never forgive you for what you did to her."
"there it is… the rebels had to be put down my dear… I understand I should've been more thoughtful with your loved one… but I wish to make reparations for this… all I ask is that return luca to where he belongs… at my side."
"you think I'd force that boy into your nightmare orgy… keep on dreaming." Eda rose and tried to walk off but the empress grabbed her hand.
"I'm not done talking." she said magic emanating from her.
Eda felt a chill run down the back of her neck.
"I do not wish any harm for the sister, you may keep her… in addition to the bounty…"
"you think you can just buy me off with money… and don't even try to threaten me."
"I would never eda… but I do have something that I know you want." The empress pulled a sheet of paper from her pocket. She handed the neatly folded piece to eda. "read this."
Eda took the paper and read it her eyes opened. "you're lying…" she said under her breath.
"Have I ever promised you a reward that I couldn't deliver?" She asked as she rose from the chair and made her way out. She called her champions and then turned her back. "you have three days eda… message me when you've made your decision… and enjoy the brownies."
Eda watched her leave and the witches knees started to buckle. This reward… it can't be real can it.
