Chapter two

Professor Snape was currently sat in the headmasters office trying to process what he had just been told. He chose not to dwell on the fact that the son of his enemy James Potter was about to become extremely famous in the wizarding world for fear of making himself ill. He did at least take some joy in the fact that both Lilly managed to survive unscathed and now according to Dumbledore, his former master lord Voldemort had been incapacitated by the boy.

"Do you believe he's gone for good?" asked Snape hoping against all that he could now begin to put his former career as a death eater well and truly behind him.

Dumbledore raised his eyebrows in response "Surely Severus your too smart to think one event would be enough to take down Voldemort, but to answer your question properly, no I do not think he is gone for good." Dumbledore sighed and stood up before beginning to pace around his office "Im not quite sure what means Voldemort used but I'm certain he is not dead, weakened perhaps but not dead."

Snape rubbed his face is exasperation "yes I too had thought Voldemort would invest in some kind of backup plan in case he was killed" he admitted "Voldemort was obsessed with immortality and would use any means to obtain it, you truly have no idea how he could have achieved it?"

Dumbledore paused his pacing to look at the man wondering how much he should tell the man, while he truly believed that Snape had turned his back on the death eaters this information he had was extremely sensitive and while Snape probably wouldn't tell another soul, there were other ways of extracting information, "besides" Dumbledore thought to himself "I myself am not 100 percent sure if my suspicions are correct."

Deciding to wait at least until he could confirm the information was 100 percent correct he simply smiled at the professor "I have my suspicions" was all Dumbledore told him in response.

Snape frowned at the old man, that was definitely not what he wanted to hear but he could do nothing but wait until the headmaster deemed it time to impart the rest of what he knew with him. Instead of replying Snape decided to ask a different question "and how do you think the boy survived?"

At hearing the question Dumbledore groaned at sat down in his chair for this time he did truly not have any answers. "Im not actually sure" Dumbledore finally admitted, "of course you've already heard the prophecy but that in of itself doesn't explain the young Potter surviving the curse, if I were to hazard a guess then I would probably say some powerful blood magic was involved."

Snape sneered at Dumbledore "The brat James doesn't have the brain to perform blood magic and Lilly never struck me as the type to play around with magic as temperamental as blood magic."

"I really wish you would get over your grudge with James Potter Severus" Dumbledore told him in a disapproving tone, "regardless you are correct neither of them know enough about blood magic to stop a curse a powerful as the killing curse, I think it may have more to do with the promise Voldemort made to you."

"Ill get over my grudge the day he decides to grow up" Snape sneered at Dumbledore "but why would my promise have anything to do with blood magic?"

"I believe it has something to do with Voldemort's promise to you, where you made him swear not to harm Lilly in anyway." Dumbledore told Snape

Snape gave Dumbledore a confused look before replying, "it was not a magically binding promise, all he gave me was his word."

Dumbledore smiled at Snape "Magic is a strange thing, even though his promise was not magically binding, it was still enough to take affect and protect the boy". Snape appeared somewhat satisfied by that answer, the potions master knew that even non magical oaths still held some power.

"Oh what of the other potter brat" Snape added almost as an afterthought, at least the boy who lived had some importance he thought, the other boy would probably be at best an average wizard growing up in his brothers shadow.

"He too was affected by the curse" replied Dumbledore "he too carries a scar, another product of dark magic, although I senses it contained much less power, I shall keep an eye on both of them to make sure there are no effects from the dark magic."

"Yes of course" replied Snape absently, he couldn't bring himself to care that much for either boy, "they'll probably grow up to be miniature versions of their father" he thought darkly for himself.

Dumbledore raised his eyebrows at Snape as if guessing the thoughts that went through his mind, not that Snape seemed to mind what Dumbledore thought of his hatred for the Potters.

Dumbledore stood up and turned to the window watching as the sun rose over the horizon, a thousand thoughts racing through his mind, things he would have to do soon, before he turned to the potions master.

"I will go and talk to the staff and inform them of the what has happened" Dumbledore told Snape "besides you should get some sleep you look exhausted" Dumbledore told Snape in a kind voice.

Snape barely glanced up as Dumbledore left the room, he was personally dreading the day the potter brats came to Hogwarts, he almost shuddered at the though of them calling him the names James Potter invented or being involved in pranks him and his idiot friends were known for.

"Hopefully at least one of them will be more like Lilly" thought Snape Sadly

AN: Next chapter will be a bit of a time skip and we will see what the potters have been getting up to. Currently a T rating but may change in the future. Future chapters will be longer in length, think of these 2 as prologue chapters.

As for update schedule, barring ww3 or my sudden and tragic death, probably once a week, or once a fortnight. Still undecided on pairing but leaning towards harry/ tracey, its an uncommon pairing but one I enjoy
