Chapter 4
One week later
Jim's celebration for his newest award was proving to be quite chaotic. Jim being the person of honor wasn't expected to personally help get anything ready and James and Lilly found out that Harry was proving himself to be extremely elusive. Still with the house-elves lending a hand all the preparations were completed in the nick of time.
Harry was currently in the library staring out of the window trying his best not to feel annoyed at the current situation, "Honestly" he thought "You would think with all the preparations his parents were making they were getting the home ready for the second coming of Merlin." Harry sighed knowing that complaining would not only be useless but also make him look jealous of his brother in the eyes of his parents.
Deciding reading was more interesting than helping his parents get the home ready for guests he sat down in the library ready to read up on an old charms book he found "hopefully my parents don't come up here and force me to help them" he thought grimly to himself, as if hearing his thoughts Jim came wondering in and immediately focused in on Harry.
"Why aren't you helping Mum and Dad get things ready for my party?" Jim sneered at Harry as if he should be Jim's personal house elf.
Harry's mind whirred for a believable excuse "They told me to rearrange the library" Harry told him in a confident tone "Professor Dumbledore is coming and he said he might want to make use of it." Harry hoped the mundane explanation would be far too boring for Jim to suspect any lie on his part.
Jim frowned at him before shrugging, appearing to buy the cock and bull story "sucks to be you" he said snidely over his shoulder as he left the library.
Harry sighed and sat back down to read, he somehow felt that he was in for a long day, he was therefore content to not step foot outside "besides, reading will be a far more productive use of my time" Harry reasoned with himself and besides no one would miss him anyway.
One hour later
The celebrations were now in full swing and Harry was trying his best not to bash his head onto the table, "I would really love to see Jim taken down a peg or two today" Harry had quite a few nasty prank ideas, unfortunately however until he had a wand he was unable to pull it off "the first spell I'm going to learn will be the confundus charm" Harry thought to himself with a small grin on his face. For now he would busy himself with books in the library.
Harry heard the guests quieten down and went to the window to see what was going on, pressing his face against the glass he was able to make out that a new guest had arrived. Harry shrugged not particularly interested "probably some ministry official" he thought to himself, little did he know that none other than Albus Dumbledore had arrived at young Jim's party.
Dumbledore had not been looking forward to attending Jim's get together, he was extremely confused why James and Lilly were making such a big deal about being awarded by the Dark force defense league. They had asked him several times in the past to join but he had managed to wave them off every time usually with the excuse that he was too busy with his many other duties, which was partly true. Privately however he thought they were something of a joke, the current organization was a shadow of its former self, it had been many years since the league had actually done anything to combat dark wizards, nowadays it was just an organization made up of attention seeking wizards who did nothing of any real note apart from brag about their membership. He still came anyway though, good relations were needed with the Potter family and the boy who lived, when Voldemort returned they would be fighting side by side so all the better they learn to get friendly with each other now. Putting away his private thoughts for the moment Dumbledore walked into the garden where the party was currently in full swing, the party went slightly quiet for a few moments as the guests stopped to look at him. James and Lilly immediately came over dragging one of their sons with them.
"Albus" James exclaimed looking happy "I'm glad you decided to attend hopefully we can get you and Jim together for a photo to go in the daily prophet."
Dumbledore smiled and nodded his head, inside he was grimacing slightly, he never cared much for having his photo in the paper, it just lead to unwanted attention, still he decided to go along with it for now.
"Of course James I wouldn't miss your party for the world" Dumbledore replied happily "I can see your whole family is coming along nicely, Jim will grow up to be a fine young man, looking around for a moment and not seeing harry Dumbledore asked "where has that other son of yours gotten to?"
James merely shrugged in reply "Probably in the library, he seems far too interested in books these days." He ruffled Jim's hair "unlike Jim who'll make a world class chaser someday."
Dumbledore smiled at him "hopefully I'll get to check in on the other son someday, he sounds like he'll do well in his studies" Dumbledore thought to himself. Ignoring his thought on Harry for the time being Dumbledore decided to make the best of the party.
Harry put down the diary he was reading, it was partly disturbing but yet there was a strange tone to the words written in the book, they had a certain charisma that Harry couldn't put his finger on. On finding Grindlewalds diary not too long ago he had tried to find out how it had ended up in the potter library, the only clue he had was the fact his grandfather was involved in the final battle. It didn't explain entirely how it came into potter possession but his best guess was that his grandfather had picked it up and perhaps did not realize its significance.
He had already read large parts of it, he had found himself agreeing with some parts and disagreeing with others. He couldn't really understand Grindlewalds dislike and condescension to muggles, though Harry hadn't really met that many of them he admitted to himself. He still however found himself being drawn a lot to what was said in the book, he would need to take steps however to make sure no one else would be able to discover what the book actually was, the last thing he needed was to be labeled as a dark wizard. Hiding it in the library was a good choice for now, barely anyone else came in here anyway but if he decided to take it to Hogwarts he would need to come up with some type of disguise for it. Deciding to put it away for before someone caught him with it, he hid the book behind a shelf and decided to read up more on magical theory, he had decided long ago that he would be better than his brother and would one day make his parents regret their decision to ignore him.
AN: Sorry for the late update, I have been slightly busy with a new job that came my way. Next chapter will see harry and family getting wands and also introduce some new characters. Really think of these chapters as filler till they get to Hogwarts, thats where most of the action will be.
Do Harry's parents hate him: No, its more along the lines of ignoring him rather than having any dislike for him, I've read fanfics where Lilly and James are abusive and I cant say I care for them very much.
Does Harry hate his family and Dumbledore: He doesn't hate his family, rather he thinks they are foolish and a bit arrogant, he doesn't really think much of Dumbledore at the moment, to Harry Dumbledore is just the headmaster of Hogwarts.
Will Grindlewalds Diary become more important: Yes it will.
My new job is all sorted so updates will be far more frequent now.
