Summary: Another nightmare wakes them. Sometimes it's Bastila, but tonight it's Revan. And Bastila holds her tightly, rubbing soft circles against her lover's back. Being together brings them comfort in moments like these, but...

Bastila has a sinking suspicion that these moments of comfort aren't meant to last.

Notes: There's a KotOR remake in progress and I'm really excited. Though I'm curious if they'll deviate from the original story any or if it'll be a 1:1 remake. (Am I hoping that Bastila will be romanceable as Female!Revan without having to mod the game this time? Absolutely. And I'm hoping they'll put Juhani's romance arc back in there too... since it was, partially anyway, disappeared from the final cut.)

In the Dark of Night

Bastila is no stranger to nightmares. Her own are are tangled web of a war that never ends, reliving the torture that broke her... or worse, being forced to watch her loved ones tortured in her place. But tonight, for her anyway, sleep came to her dreamlessly. Whether because her meditation techniques were finally paying off or because her subconscious gave her the night off, well... Bastila's really not sure.

Unfortunately, her nightmares aren't the only ones Bastila has to contend with and she can feel the anguish trickling down her bond with Revan even before the thrashing of her bed partner registers with Bastila's sleep fogged mind.

She sits up, slowly, and resists the urge to reach out and wake Revan up immediately. Much as she'd like to just wake her lover up, experience has taught them both that's a good way to need a kolto patch or a gentle Force healing. Bastila's lashed out on waking from a bad nightmare herself, if she feels boxed in during those moments between sleeping and awake when the real world and her nightmares blend together.

Canderous had been impressed by the black eye she'd given Revan the first time Revan wasn't careful in waking her, but all Bastila had felt was shame. Thankfully, their bond gave them an advantage that other couples healing from traumatic events lacked.

Closing her eyes, Bastila concentrated on her bond to Revan, sending soothing feelings to her and prodding her towards wakefulness. The older woman's agitated movements calmed in response and, after a few minutes, her breathing moved towards waking patterns and Revan's eyes opened. She looked to Bastila and smiled, sleepily.

That was all the cue Bastila needed to cuddle closer, wrapping her arms around Revan's shoulders.

Despite Revan's smile, she still feels unsettled. Bastila gently soothes her further over the bond and slid her fingers through Revan's hair. She hummed softly for a bit and then asked, "do you want to talk about it?"

Sometimes the talking helps eases their nightmares. Certainly Bastila's have been calmer and fewer lately. Revan's, however... not so much.

"I think I'm remembering my past in my dreams," Revan said quietly. "Everything was so dark..." she shivered in Bastila's arms. "I couldn't... there was no light. I couldn't find the light..."

Reaching out with the Force, Bastila carefully twisted the knob to turn the lighting in their room up slowly. Still dim, but no longer dark. She felt Revan grow less tense as the light registered.

Softly, Revan murmured, "I don't want to go back to that place."

"You don't have to. Never," Bastila tried to reassure her. But she hesitated to say the word 'promise'. Because she wasn't sure she could promise such a thing.

As Revan's memories returned to her, so did her certainty that the Republic was in danger from some greater threat in the unknown regions. From the place she had ventured with Malak after the Mandalorian Wars... and both returned Sith Lords.

Something waited out there; Bastila could feel it in her bones. And it hated the Jedi.

But tonight Bastila could hold her lover tight and pretend their future would be an easy, comfortable one.

"I love you, Bas." Revan's lips moved softly against Bastila's neck.

She smiled. "I love you too, Revan."

And perhaps she could shower Revan in enough love and happiness that, for a little while, they could both pretend together.
