Chapter 4
"Was he silenced?" the voice asked the man in front of him.
Arnold Marks was a good sized man, 6'2" 240 pounds of solid muscle, but the shadowy figure in front of him scared the living hell out of him. If the rumors about the leader of the Brotherhood were true, he was as dangerous as the former Gundam pilots.
"Yes. Preventer believes he took his own life, as was the plan." Marks responded.
"Good; and the word on the pilots?"
"They are gone to different colonies, mainly their own home colony clusters. 02 has returned to L2, 03 has returned to L3, and 04 has returned to L4."
"What about 01 and 05?" the man asked.
Marks was afraid he would ask that.
"Unknown. They are keeping their presence top secret. 04 has returned to run his family's empire, while the rest have taken over the Preventer offices on each of the main colony clusters mentioned."
"So who is in charge of the offices on L1, L4, and L5?" the man asked skeptically.
"L1 is being commanded by Zechs Marquis and Lucrezia Noin; L4 is commanded by Mit Rath, and L5 is under the command of Tam Sawton. None of them are ours. The commanders on the colonies we had under our influence have been removed."
"Ensure they are silenced. Is there anything we can do about these newer…additions?"
"At this time no, but we are already in the process of formulating plans for them. As for the former commanders, teams are already en route. They will be silenced."
"Good. Return to Preventer, continue your work, and keep us informed."
"Yes, sir," Marks responded with a salute and left.
As he left the building, he walked across the street to the preventer building and went to work. There were perks with working across from the capital of the E.S.U.N.
Mitt arrived to L4 without any issues. The Preventer vehicle waiting for him took him to his house, which turned out to be a nice two-story with three bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. A spacious living room with all of his furniture tastefully arranged made Mitt grin. He'd have to send Middie a thank-you card. The couch and TV beckoned him, but Mit resisted. He had work to do. He activated his radio and turned it to classical music so he could relax, then pulled his laptop from its bag and booted it up. When he connected to the Preventer server, he saw that he had an email from Wufei's computer. Thinking it was an update, he opened it. It contained a video file, so Mit opened it. What Mit saw almost made him fall out of his seat. It appeared to be a micro video of Wufei entering into his office. He sat down and activated his computer. He typed his password in and hit enter. When Wufei hit enter, the fun began and Mit start laughing. A shock from a device hidden under the button sent Wufei jumping up, and smacking his head on the light fixture, starting the ball rolling. Wufei began running into things that had been strategically moved to incur maximum pain and hilarity, like a Rube Goldberg machine of pain, or an image from an old cartoon. For a few seconds, Wufei had ended up in his private restroom before bouncing out to the office door. It was at that moment, the door swung open before Wufei touched it and he went out the door. All Mit saw were legs. Legs that looked awfully familiar, but that was when the video ended.
"Good one Duo," Mit said to himself. "Wufei is gonna murder you."
Before Mit could close his email, another message came in. It was from Wufei again.
"Oh crap, now what?" The file contained another video. It was a continuation of the previous video, but this was from a surveillance camera and a personal camera held by, guess who, Duo. What Mit saw made him literally fall out of his seat. The door opened as Wufei came through, and in one fluid move and from both a third and first person view, punched Duo square in the nose, sending Duo flying about 10 feet, breaking the camera Duo was holding in the process.
"That's going on my personal hard drive and a disk," Mit said to himself when he recovered. "I can't believe Wufei has a sense of humor, and a mean right hook," Mit said as he chuckled. 'I'll have to make sure Quatre and Heero sees this,' Mit thought as he burned the video to micro disc.
After ensuring the video was saved about twenty different ways to ensure that he had a way to humiliate both pilots at the annual Christmas party, Mit worked for about three more hours preparing for the next morning as it was his first day on the job, then went to bed with the thought that maybe, just maybe, he could help catch the ones trying to start another war.
Tweep! Tweep! Tweep! Heero's communicator on his computer activated. The only people that had this extension are Trowa, Wufei, and Une. They knew not to contact him unless it was an emergency or that the entire Brotherhood was in jail. He figured it was an emergency, and he was correct, because Wufei popped up on the screen.
"What is it?" Heero asked.
"We have a problem. All of the commanders for the colonies that had command changes are dead, the latest in an apparent car accident."
"I take it your thinking what I'm thinking then?" Heero asked, knowing the answer.
"Yes, these men were part of the Brotherhood. We are looking into known associates to see if there are any connections... what is it?" Wufei noticed that Heero had an odd look in his eyes.
"Rath noticed an odd thing. The former commander, a Ted Harper, had multiple infractions and charges on his file. How he had maintained his position can only mean one thing. He has a friend in the higher-ups."
"You don't mean just in Preventers do you?" Wufei asked, already an idea as to what he had in mind.
"No. I'm thinking the Senate, or other politician."
"That's what I was afraid you would say. I'm sending you the scene photos. See if you can spot anything our techs couldn't. Also, I've already informed Une, Sawton, and Trowa. Their colonies were almost out of communication range for the day. Rath, you, and Zechs are my next calls."
"Copy that. I'll inform Duo, Rath, and Quatre. Send a copy of the files to Rath and Zechs. This all has the smell of OZ on it, or at least former OZ. They always were good at making people disappear. Maybe Zechs can spot the connection, and Rath is our best forensics expert."
"Will do. How is our 'package'?" Wufei asked.
"Secure, and safe."
"Let me know if that changes."
"Will do; out."
Heero terminated the comm unit call and walked to his 'bed'. Bed being the operative word, considering it was the couch in Relena's room. He had his own personal one, but after the two had shared their kiss, he felt the never-ending urge to remain by her side or within a close proximity. Luckily, Relena, who was asleep at the moment, didn't mind one bit. He sat down and watched as her steady breathing calmed the worry within him. He felt compelled to thank whatever deity watching over them for every breath she took. He quickly squelched that desire, for he knew that it was pure luck that she was still breathing. His anger at himself for missing that sniper still floated up every now and then, but his years of training taught him to suppress it. He walked over to Relena and brushed a few strands from her sleeping face and lightly kissed her cheek. Then he left the room to have a private conversation with Duo on a secured com line they have set up for themselves. Unlike the comm unit he used with Wufei, this was specially designed to conference up to 10 people on a secured net. A net that couldn't be hacked. Heero knew this because he designed it. His first call began ringing.
Beep! Beep! Beep! The communicator was going off louder than usual to Duo. His nose was still tender from the punch Wufei delivered the day he had returned from L4. Duo was set to return to L2 a few hours after he returned, so he decided to watch the fun. It went off without a hitch until Wufei landed a right hook to his nose. Luckily, it wasn't broken. Duo rolled over and hit the talk button. He barely noticed that Hilde was not in the bed next to him.
"Yeah?" he answered drowsily.
"Duo, we have a problem." It was Heero.
"What is it?" Duo asked now fully awake. When Heero called at o'dark thirty, it was a big issue.
"The former commanders that we had replaced are all dead. Some made to appear natural, other in accidents."
"That was fast. These guys don't like to leave loose ends, do they? Does everyone know yet?" Duo asked as he started throwing clothes on, since he had gotten used to sleeping in the buff.
"I haven't told Rath yet, but everyone else knows or will in the next hour. Wufei contacted me about ten minutes ago and we think it might have something to do with former OZ soldiers. He's sending me the crime and accident scene photos now."
It was at that moment Duo heard the sound of someone vomiting in the bathroom he and Hilde shared next to their room and he fully realized where Hilde went.
"Heero, gimme a sec."
He walked to the bathroom and lightly knocked on the door.
"Babe, you ok in there?"
"Yeah, just dying of the plague, asshole," came her response.
Duo backed away from the door slowly. Since the two had gotten married a few months before, he knew well enough to not bother a woman that was sick in the bathroom. He hoped she was ok, but went back to the comm unit.
"Everything ok?" Heero asked, with no ounce of concern showing.
"Hilde's caught a bug or something. I don't know, lately, she's been a little moody, but she wasn't like this until about 3 weeks ago, then all hell seemed to break loose. She's the gal of my dreams, but sometimes she can be more terrifying than you." Duo said with a grin.
What Duo saw almost made him fall out of bed. Heero grinned a small grin. It had made Duo want to take a picture. At that moment, Heero got a message on his laptop he had next to the communicator.
"Those the photos?" Duo asked.
"Yeah. Ill pull them up on the system."
A few seconds later, the pics popped on the screen. Some of them pretty grisley. One particular one was brutal, and it was at that moment, Hilde came out of the bathroom. She saw the picture, and bolted back into the bathroom. Duo didn't know she had come out until she slammed the door.
"Uh-oh. Sorry babe," Duo yelled after her.
He didn't receive a reply, so he went back to the photos.
"Wow, these guys did some primo work. I can't even tell that these weren't accidents."
"I agree. This is professional work. Almost along the lines of a professional assassin, except from what I've gathered from the reports that Wufei sent, they all died within a few minutes of each other."
Duo sat there dumbfounded for a second.
"Heero, that means that the brotherhood is very coordinated."
"Yes, and what's worse is that both Wufei and I think there might be someone in the senate or other branch of government involved."
"Great. What else could go wrong?"
It was at that moment a message popped up on the screen signaling there was another person calling in. When Heero activated it, the both of them saw Zechs with a cup of coffee in his hand. The clock behind him showed it was 0630 on L1.
"Heero, we have a major problem. These guys were definately assassinated."
"Where's the proof?" Duo asked?
"Pull up the second car crash victim," Zech's instructed. Heero pulled up the picture that had made Hilde sick.
"Look at his neck very closely. Do you see that tiny red line on the neck? It's partially hidden by the blood form the impact. I'm almost positive that is a strangulation mark. You can see the slight coloration differences. This guy was dead before the wreck." Zechs said grimly to the two former pilots. "There is only one group of people that I know of that are that good at hiding assassinations. The group was known as the Elites."
"The Elites?" Duo asked.
"Never heard of them, and Preventer doesn't have a file on them," Heero said.
"Doesn't surprise me. Only a few people knew of the Elites. Even Une didn't know. They were the same as the specials in OZ, except where the specials flew mobile suits only, these guys were trained as special forces ground troops. They had basic mobile suit training, but they excelled at ground fighting and guerrilla warfare. They took the training from some of the best special forces units in history and rolled it into one training regimen. They used training from the former US Navy SEALs, Marine Force Recon, Army Green Berets, former British SAS, and former Russian Spetznaz. These guy are very good, and very dangerous. As dangerous as you former gundam pilots, maybe more."
"How did you hear about them?" Duo asked.
"They had myself and Treize train some of their men in mobile suit piloting for a few months until they had someone permantly assigned. They learn very quickly, and adapt to anything. The big problem is that they are given new identities when they complete training, so no one knows who they are or were they are from."
"Well, we'll keep our eyes and ears open." Duo said with a yawn.
"I'll do some more research if I can." Zechs said.
"Alright. I'll keep everyone updated as well. Out," Heero said as he reached to turn off the communicator.
"Wait, there's one more thing I have to ask," Zechs said.
"What is it?" Heero asked.
"How is our friend doing?"
"Yeah, I was wondering myself," Duo piped in.
"Fine. Resting right now. The wounds have almost healed. The interior ones have. Right now, they are doing some physical therapy to strengthen the heart so our friend can start moving around again. Walking is next."
"Thank you, Heero. Please keep our friend safe, for all our sakes," Zechs said with a rare smile to the pilot.
"I will, come hell or high water," Heero replied. "Out."
The communicator winked off in front of Duo. He layed his head back on his pillow and contemplated the conversation that had just taken place. The thought of a whole bunch of people with skills that rivaled the gundam pilot's abilities worried him. While he was sitting there, Hilde came out of the bathroom looking pale.
"Babe, you need to see the doctor. I'm worried you might have something that could be really bad," Duo said with a comforting tone in his voice.
While major sicknesses like the flu and even the plague had popped up on the colonies, there were vaccines. Unfortunately, anyone infected with them is quarantined for a mandatory 30 days, if not more to protect the colony. He didn't want to be away from her that long. He enjoyed the feeling of the warmth of her body next to him every night.
"I did this morning. They took some blood test just to confirm, but the doctor said she had a pretty good idea what it was. I just checked myself when we went to bed."
At that moment, the 20 watt lightbulb in Duo's head went off. There was only one thing that was able to be tested by a doctor and the patient.
"You're telling me you're..."
"Yup," she said with a grin. "I'm pregnant."
Duo grabbed her by the waist, lifted her, and started spinning. When she started turning green, he immediatly stopped and just pulled her close.
"All I can say is I love you so much, baby," Duo said as he kissed Hilde on the lips. Then he leaned down to her stomach and lightly kissed it.
"The same goes to you, little one, and I can't wait to meet you."
It was then they layed down in bed and fell asleep in each other's arms. It was the best sleep either of them had in a while.
