DISCLAIMER: I don't own Harry Potter
Chapter 5
Cedric felt bothered. It's been awhile since his last letter to Hermione. He hasn't received any response from her. He wondered if he wrote something that upset her in his last letter.
"Alright, Ced?" James Walker, Cedric's best friend, nudged Cedric.
"Yeah." Cedric mumbled as he took a bite of his roasted lamb chops.
James gave him a doubtful look. "Come on buddy, tell your best mate what's inside that stupid brain of yours."
Cedric scoffed. "So between the two of us, I got the stupid brain?" Cedric shook his head, "Remind me again who scored higher than you in Arithmancy?"
"Oh ho! Would you look at that, Diggory bragging about his top marks." James snickered. Cedric rolled his eyes.
"Seriously man, what happened? Are you still bothered with the looks and whispers?" James asked as he drank his orange juice.
Cedric shrugged in reply. It's true that some students give him the look of scrutiny and he could even hear whispers regarding what happened in the third task.
"Don't worry too much about it. It will all cease down eventually." James comforted and munched his food.
"What the! Stay away from my food, Adams!" James enraged as he swatted Liam Adams, Hufflepuff, fork away from his plate.
"I just want a tiny piece!" Liam argued.
"No!" James replied.
They continued to argue. Cedric tuned them out. He recalled the looks and whispers that he experienced these past few days. People actually think that he's also lying but they never said anything to him. Cedric thought that Potter had it tougher than him though. He heard that one of his classmates confronted him about it.
Cedric looked at the Gryffindor table. He saw Potter ate his food gloomily. Weasley gobbled his food while Hermione ducked her head closely to Harry. It looked like she was talking and comforting him.
"She looked worried." Cedric thought as he stared at the girl. "Why aren't you responding to my letter?" Cedric stared hard as if he was trying to send a message through his mind.
Cedric sighed, "I feel like an idiot."
James snickered when he heard Cedric, "You're an idiot since the day you were born, Diggory."
Cedric smacked his chest to retaliate and James moaned in pain while the rest of their friends laughed at his expense.
Cedric was on his way to the Hufflepuff dormitory to take a nap. His head ached so badly and thought he needed some rest.
Students were in a hurry for their next class when Cedric walked in the hallways. Some even bumped him in the shoulder and just shouted their apologies while they ran away. Cedric closed his eyes and pinched his eyebrows together as he wished for the pain to stop when someone slammed into his chest. He opened his eyes instantly and held the shoulder of the person in front of him. He took a step back and said, "Are you alright?"
He looked at the face of the person and froze. Hermione.
She looked up, "I'm really sorry I didn't mean to bump into you. Someone pushed me and walked away hastily."
"It's alright. Are you okay?" Cedric asked stiffly.
Hermione nodded and mumbled, "Stupid Slytherins."
"Oh." Cedric replied.
Hermione huffed, "I have to go. I don't want to be late. Thank you by the way."
She walked away hurriedly.
"No problem." Cedric uttered and stared at her back. He sighed in defeat. "Great move self. She was right in front of you and you just bloody froze." he mumbled to himself as he ruffled his hair.
Cedric hid behind the pillar while he waited for a bushy haired witch to pass by. He finally formed a plan on how to approach her. He decided that he'd hit her with a sticking charm from behind when she passed by but he would make sure that her wand won't be in her reach.
He came up with the idea when he thought about what happened to them last time. She might again suspect that it was Slytherins' doing then Cedric would approach her and release her from the charm. This would give Cedric an opportunity to talk to her.
"I know that this is not a very nice thing to do but I hope this will work. It's just a harmless charm anyway." Cedric muttered. He waited for a few minutes then he saw Hermione walked with a book on one hand and her wand on the other. She practiced the wand movement of a certain charm. Luckily, she was alone.
As she passed by promptly, Cedric cast the sticking charm at her feet. Hermione stumbled and dropped her book while her wand flew away because of her flick. She tried to reach for it but got stuck. Cedric and Hermione watched her wand fly in the air until it hit the head of a student.
"Ow! What the!" Draco Malfoy cursed as he touched his head and turned around. He saw a wand on the floor and Hermione in front of him.
Hermione widened her eyes when she saw Malfoy glared at her.
"Why did you throw your filthy wand at me?" Malfoy scowled.
"It was an accident Malfoy." Hermione countered, "Give me back my wand!"
"You threw it at me. Why should I give it back?" Malfoy snapped.
"Oh for god's sake! I told you it wasn't intentional!" Hermione retorted.
Malfoy eyed her dubiously and smirked. "If you want it so bad, get it yourself. I don't want to get infected with your mudblood germs."
Hermione looked around their surroundings. She saw some students walked by and only looked at them. No one bothered to intervene. Hermione sighed in frustration and tried to take a step forward but her foot won't move no matter what. She was already aware that she was placed on a sticking charm but did it anyway. She cursed inwardly.
Malfoy noticed her struggle. He looked down at her feet as she tried to walk. He furrowed his eyebrows when her feet didn't move.
"Got yourself in a sticky situation, haven't you Granger?" Malfoy taunted.
"Well done, it's nice to know that you actually have a brain." Hermione breathed exasperatedly, "Can you just please help me or just give me my wand."
Malfoy glanced at his watch. It was almost time for the next class. He noted only a handful of students walked by in the hallway. He levitated Hermione's wand and walked towards her.
Hermione rolled her eyes when she noticed that he levitated her wand.
"Who did this?" Malfoy asked.
"I'm sure your friends will fill you in all about this later." Hermione snapped and snatched her wand. Unfortunately, Malfoy was quick to move it away from her grasp.
Hermione scowled at him, "Do you really think you'll get my filthy germs by holding my wand?" She tried to snatch it again when Malfoy dropped her wand in his hand. He handed it to her and whispered, "Does this answer your question?" He looked at her in the eye as she received her wand. He turned around and walked away.
Hermione tilted her head and stared at his back. She looked at her watch and gasped when she noticed the time. She cursed silently and undid the charm. She grabbed her book and walked away hastily to her class.
Cedric just stood behind the pillar as he watched the interaction between the two. He didn't find the right timing to intervene. Honestly, he didn't have the guts to intervene. He got caught up listening to their conversation. He doesn't know why but the way they talked bothered him.
Cedric watched Hermione silently as she headed to the staircase. He had formed another plan yesterday. It involved a staircase. He had two options. He either rips the bottom of Hermione's satchel or makes her slip on one of the steps. He opted for the second option.
He heard some of her girl housemates talked about a scenario where the girl fell right into the boy's arms and they swooned about how romantic it was. Cedric cringed a little when he heard it but later on grinned when he wondered if Hermione would feel the same if he caught her in his arms.
Hermione focused herself in reading her book. Unaware of the things that surrounded her. She carried on on her reading as she sauntered down the staircase. Cedric stopped at the bottom of the staircase and checked if someone was around. He noted that it was empty. He took his wand out from his pocket. He concentrated and discreetly sent a slipping charm at Hermione.
Suddenly Malfoy hastily climbed up the staircase before him while he rummaged his satchel. Cedric was about to shout 'stop' when Hermione gasped and shrieked, "Oh my god!"
Malfoy looked up immediately and saw Hermione falling towards him. He startled as he caught her in his arms. He stepped a foot down to balance their weight. He grunted because of the impact.
"Bloody hell Granger! Are you trying to maim me?" Malfoy grimaced.
"What? No!" Hermione replied.
"Get off me! You're heavy!" Malfoy grumbled as he pushed Hermione lightly away from him.
Hermione stood up straight, "I'm sorry!"
Malfoy huffed and massaged his chest. Hermione noticed Malfoy looked at her and her body. He looked like he's eyeing if she has injuries.
"I'm fine. Are you alright?" Hermione asked.
Malfoy shrugged, "You should be careful next time. I didn't know you were clumsy."
Hermione huffed and picked up her book, "I'm not!"
Malfoy rolled his eyes and she glared at him in return.
"Are you both alright?" Cedric stepped in.
The two looked at him. "I saw what happened." Cedric added and looked at Hermione.
"The mudblood just decided to show off her clumsiness." Malfoy sneered. Cedric glared at him, "You know that we don't tolerate that word here Mr. Malfoy." Cedric scolded.
Malfoy yawned, "Do I look like I care, Diggory? Now if you excuse me, I need to take a shower again. I need to wash off the filthiness on my body." He walked away from them. Hermione noted that he headed upstairs instead of the dungeons.
Cedric grimaced, "He's a bit rude, isn't he?"
"He's Malfoy." Hermione replied offhandedly and hurriedly climbed up the staircase. Malfoy was a few distance away from her when she reached the top. "Thank you!" she shouted. Malfoy turned around, made a disgusted gesture, and continued to walk away.
Cedric watched Hermione shout and later on smirked. It looked like she was amused. She climbed down the stairs and saw him. "Oh, we're fine by the way." Hermione answered his question earlier.
"That's great." Cedric replied dazedly.
Hermione nodded at him and left.
Again, Cedric just stood there and looked bothered by the unexpected occurrence.
Hermione fumed when she went out of the Gryffindor Common Room. She chided the Weasley twins earlier for terrorizing the first years to test their inventions. They just laughed and even wager that Hermione would beg them to give her one of their inventions, Skiving Snackboxes, at the end of the year due to OWLS.
"HA! Like I'll ever do that!" Hermione scoffed, "Stupid Ron! Turning a blind eye to what his brothers' are doing." Hermione stomped her feet as she started to patrol the corridors. She reached the seventh floor when she found herself face to face with Malfoy.
"Malfoy!" Hermione was startled.
"Granger. Caught strolling in the corridors past curfew. Now what would the Professors think?" Malfoy tutted.
Hermione glared, "If you must know, I'm on a patrol." She pointed on her Prefect badge.
Malfoy crossed his arms and lifted an eyebrow, "I didn't know that it was your turn to patrol tonight."
"Padma switched with me. She said she needed to finish her essay tonight." Hermione replied and crossed her arms too. "What are you doing here?"
"I have important duties to attend to." Malfoy started to walk.
"Is it your patrol assignment tonight? Are you Padma's partner?" Hermione walked behind him.
"I don't feel the need to answer your inquiries." Malfoy prompted.
Hermione rolled her eyes, "Why didn't you wait for your partner at the meeting place? Did you not read the list of responsibilities we have…"
"Oh close your damn mouth Granger. You're notifying the rule breakers with your loud voice!" Malfoy chastised.
"But you're still not allowed to leave your partner behind when you're on patrol duty!" Hermione continued to scold him in whisper.
Malfoy stopped and turned to her, "How about you huh, Ms. know it all? Did you bother to think about your partner while you patrolled? Did you even bother to arrive on time at the meeting place?"
His questions made Hermione shut her mouth.
"Step down from you mighty high horse Granger. You didn't follow the rules either!" Malfoy seethed.
Hermione looked thoroughly chastised when Malfoy finished.
"I'm sorry. I was late because of the Weasley twins. They…" She tried to explain.
"Let's just get this over with." Malfoy cut her off.
Hermione nodded her head in response and they continued to patrol silently. Unconsciously, both students took cautious steps when they passed by the DADA classroom. Afraid that they might catch the attention of their DADA Professor.
"You should advise Potter to shut his mouth every time Umbridge opens hers." Malfoy mentioned.
Hermione frowned. "Easy for you to say. She doesn't insult the people you value."
Malfoy shrugged, "He should be aware by now that she doesn't plan to stop anytime soon. She loves giving him detentions."
Hermione sighed, "Harry's not in his best form to control his emotions."
"When did he ever learn to control his emotions? Scarhead's prone to flying off handle every time." Malfoy stated. Hermione glared at him and didn't reply to his comment. They stayed silent until they reached their supposed meeting place and concluded their patrol.
Malfoy moved towards the dungeons when Hermione stopped him.
"How are you?" Hermione asked, "Since that time?" she added softly.
Malfoy was taken aback. He turned around and saw Hermione's concern look. He understood what she meant. He was just shocked that she even bothered to mention it. He smothered his expression to mask his real emotions.
"Careful Granger. Someone might think that you're worried about a snake." Malfoy taunted and walked back towards the Slytherin's Dungeons. Hermione huffed and moved the opposite path towards the Gryffindor's Tower.
Unbeknownst to the two, Cedric Diggory witnessed their conversation. He hid just away from their view.
"What was that about?" Cedric thought. He wondered the relationship between the two. "Are they friends? Because it doesn't sound like they were enemies." he mumbled. He was troubled with his thoughts about the two. He recalled the events that happened before. The sticking charm. The stairs. Malfoy ended up saving her instead of Cedric and there's the scene in the library! "Was it really just a coincidence?"
He imagined the image of Hermione falling into Malfoy arms. Cedric cursed. He felt jealous. "Lucky bastard."
Something inside Cedric stirred. The urge of revealing himself to Hermione was stronger than before. Cedric hastily grabbed a parchment and a quill from his bag.
Dear Hermione,
Hello. How are you? It's been awhile. (Hermione raised an eyebrow when she read this.)
Remember when you wrote that you're curious about my identity?
I know a mere hint won't satisfy you. By the way, I saw you in the library. I noticed you arrived later than your usual time and stressed out. Is there something wrong? Are you alright? I hope everything's okay.
I don't really know how to say this but Hermione, I just want to make sure if you're still interested to know me because I think I'm brave enough now to reveal myself to you.
Another hint I can give you and hopefully my last one is that we had more tête-à-tête this week compared to the years we had at Hogwarts.
Sincerely,
Someone
Hermione sighed.
Hermione just finished her bath when the letter arrived. The bath lifted her mood up from the infuriating night she had today. She thought about the letter's content tonight. "He's finally going to reveal his identity huh." she mumbled.
She recalled the contents of the previous letters she received since break. She tried to find other hints besides the ones he gave her. She thought long and hard until she gasped in disbelief. She rummaged her bag and found the letter she received yesterday. She was more focused on this letter's content. She read it twice. She gasped again and widened her eyes, "No way!"
Hermione searched for a particular blonde person after classes the next day. A determined expression on her face. Harry and Ron noticed her mood and repeatedly asked what's wrong during class hours. She shrugged them off and said she just realized something. Hermione searched high and low and not once did she see a glimpse of that person. She got irritated with the thought of not finding him. She needed answers right now.
"I knew I would find you here." Hermione stated when she finally found him.
Draco Malfoy turned to her and looked at his watch. He smirked and pointed his watch, "Liar. If you knew it all along, you wouldn't have found me near curfew."
Hermione rolled her eyes, "How did you know I was searching for you?"
"I have eyes, Granger. I saw you glance at my house more than once today. You have the look that you needed answers."
"Then why did you play hide and seek? You weren't in any of the classes today. You knew that I needed to talk to you." Hermione crossed her arms.
"I didn't play that rubbish muggle game. You didn't see me because I intentionally positioned myself away from your viewpoint." He pointed out.
"Why are you avoiding me then?"
He shrugged, "I just have no idea what answers you want from me."
"Stop acting oblivious, Malfoy. You know why I'm here." Hermione declared.
"As a matter of fact, Granger. I actually don't." Malfoy countered.
"The letters you sent me." Hermione straightforwardly said. "The ones that said you want to get to know me. Why are you doing this?"
"Ah! So this is about that nitwit admirer of yours." Malfoy sneered.
"Oh come one, Malfoy! Stop pretending!" Hermione exclaimed in frustration. "You sent me a letter yesterday stating that you finally decided to reveal yourself!"
Malfoy's eyes narrowed when he heard that.
"Well, you don't have to do that. I figured it out!" Hermione said smugly.
"Not to burst your happy bubble Granger but you didn't figure it out. It was not me!" Malfoy gritted.
Malfoy took a step closer to her and scowled, "And how many times do I have to tell you that you shouldn't entertain an anonymous letter! You don't know who's behind it. It could possibly be someone who has intentions to harm you."
"Stop being idiotic, Granger." Malfoy uttered brutally and walked past her. He headed to the exit of the Astronomy Tower.
"Well, are you planning to harm me?" Hermione replied.
"For Merlin's sake Granger! It's not me!" Malfoy cried out as he faced her. "Stop insisting that I'm that twat admirer of yours because I'm not!" He glared daggers at her, "And you should know better than to continue being naïve to these stupid letters!"
Malfoy huffed and stormed off but he could still hear her loud question. "Why do you care about what I should do?"
"I don't!" He insisted before disappearing from her view.
Hermione was frustrated.
After her confrontation with Malfoy, she returned to the Gryffindor's Common Room extremely peeved. She couldn't believe that she was wrong. "I can't be wrong." she muttered as she threw herself on the sofa. She was lucky that when she arrived, the room was deserted. The students must've gone to their respective dorms.
Hermione closed her eyes and remembered her conversation with Malfoy earlier. She thought about the hints she got from the letters. "Maybe I should reread them all now." she thought and ran to her dorm, gathered all the letters, and went back to the common room.
The most obvious hint was the similarity of her conversation with Malfoy during their patrol and the content of one of the letters.
We had more tête-à-tête this week compared to the years we had at Hogwarts.
This week, she had more conversations with Malfoy than all the years they had at Hogwarts. She doesn't understand how but when she was in a tricky situation this week, Malfoy was there to save her and they talked during those times. Well, for a few years now they talked but it was mostly exchanged of insults and not really a conversation.
See you at the library.
She might have understood it wrong. Maybe what the sender meant in this hint was that she will see him at the library on that day and not everyday. Malfoy approached her at the library on that day!
"Wait." Hermione paused in her thoughts. "That was also the day he picked up and gave me the letter!"
She recalled the tone of his voice at that time. He sounded surprised and curious. "So there is really a chance that he was not the sender after all!" Hermione exclaimed. She ruffled her bushy hair. She was hasty. She didn't think about it thoroughly. She just impulsively confronted Malfoy about something that might not have any involvement with him after all. She groaned in frustration.
Fred Weasley arrived at the Gryffindor Common Room after curfew. He was about to climb up to his dorm when he heard movement near the fireplace. He squinted his eyes. It was already dim in the room and the only source of light was the fire. He walked towards the fireplace and saw Hermione seated on the floor and parchments spread in front of her. "Merlin Granger! You almost gave me a heart attack!" Fred dramatically said.
Hermione looked up to him and rolled her eyes. "Yeah right, like I didn't notice your mischievous expression as you quietly approach."
Fred sheepishly chuckled. He did intend to sneak up on the person at the fireplace and give him/her a fright but when he saw Hermione, he opted to be dramatic instead. He leaned on the table and used a singsong tone, "What do we have here? Is Granger already cramming for her classes? Do you want me to give you our Skiving Snackboxes?"
"No, I don't want to taste any of your foolish inventions. And most importantly, I don't cram unlike most people I know." Hermione pointed out.
Fred snickered at her reply.
"Where have you been anyway?" Hermione asked.
"Why? Is Prefect Granger going to punish little 'ol Freddie for being out after curfew?" Fred taunted. The twins really like teasing Hermione and their brother Ron about their Prefect status.
Hermione sighed in exhaustion, "I don't even have the energy to do that now."
Fred stared at her when she said that. He noticed that she looked troubled. He looked at the parchments on the ground. "Are you...alright?" Fred hesitated. He wasn't used to expressing his concern to other people besides his twin.
"I don't know.." Hermione groaned.
Fred looked at her for a moment then picked up one parchment but Hermione was quick enough to pull it out from his grasp. "What's that?" Fred said in curiosity. He only saw a glimpse of the words 'Dear', 'Hermione', 'Sincerely', and 'Someone'.
"Nothing." Hermione dismissed him. Fred raised an eyebrow at her and crouched down beside her on the floor, "It doesn't look nothing to me."
"And it doesn't have anything to do with you." Hermione prompted.
Fred bobbed his head in agreement, "And it's also bothering your brilliant mind." Fred teased while he pointed her head.
"You're right." Hermione sighed in defeat.
"What was that?" Fred jested as he placed his hand near his ear, "Did I just hear the Hermione Granger say that I'm right?"
"Oh just get over it." Hermione grumbled.
Fred snickered at her and sat down properly beside her, "Why don't you tell me what's bothering you? You never know I might be able to help you."
Hermione looked at him for a moment and shook her head, "You'll just make fun of me."
Fred gasped dramatically, "Of course not! I would never do that."
"See! You're already making fun of me!" Hermione almost whined.
Fred laughed at her response. "But seriously though, maybe I can help. Two brilliant minds are better than one, you know." He coaxed.
Hermione looked at him doubtfully.
Fred rolled his eyes, "You're not the only one who has a brilliant mind."
Hermione was silent for a minute and conceded, "I doubt it but fine. Just please promise me you won't tell anyone about this. Not even George."
"I promise!" Fred agreed instantly.
Hermione shook her head in return, "Place your hands in front of you so I can see that you're not crossing your fingers."
Fred chuckled at her cautiousness and did what she told him. "I promise I won't tell a single soul even to my beloved twin." Fred swore.
Hermione nodded in satisfaction.
"Do you want me to do an Unbreakable Vow too?" Fred quipped.
"There's no need for that." Hermione grunted and gave him the parchments one by one and in order.
"What are these anyway?" Fred asked as he received it.
"Just read it please and tell me what you think." Hermione ordered.
Fred eyed her suspiciously and read the letters. He lifted an eyebrow as he read the first one. He snickered, "You're troubled by a confession letter?"
Hermione groaned and muttered, "Just finish them all first before you react."
Fred shook his head in amusement. He didn't expect that he'd read a confession letter. He thought it would be one of the secrets she have with Harry and Ron or anything about the Order. Nevertheless, he continued reading. Snorts and snickers were Fred's common reactions while he read. Hermione waited for him to finish and eyed him expectantly, "So?"
Fred showed her a finger to tell her to be quiet. He closed his eyes like he was thinking. Hermione waited in bated breath for his opinions. She noted that almost 4 minutes had passed. She waited until she saw the side of his lips quivered like he was holding his laugh.
Hermione narrowed her eyes, grabbed his index finger, and bent it upwards. Fred winced in pain, "Bloody hell! That hurts!" He cursed as he massaged his finger.
"Then stop playing around!" Hermione snapped.
Fred made a face and chided, "Alright, geez, you need to relax woman!"
Hermione gathered the letters and grumbled, "I knew I shouldn't have expected you to be serious even just for a moment!"
"Oh c'mon Granger, I was just kidding! You looked so serious earlier and I couldn't help it!" Fred explained.
Hermione rolled her eyes.
"Alright, give me those." Fred said and grabbed the letters. He flipped them and took one letter out. "I'm assuming that you're trying to figure out the sender, am I correct?"
Hermione nodded.
"And the hints were too vague for you to figure it out?" Fred checked.
"Well, I did kind of figure it out and confronted the person but he denied it vehemently." Hermione mumbled.
"Wait. You confronted someone about this?" Fred voiced out, amused.
"Yes and again, he denied it but I was so sure it was him. I mean, we almost had the same conversation as one of the letters!" Hermione insisted.
"But he denied it. Well, I can't say I'm surprise that he denied it, you practically threw him off by confronting him." Fred stated in as-a-matter-in-fact tone.
Hermione huffed, "He said he was ready to reveal his identity!"
"But at his own pace, and certainly not in the middle of your interrogation." Fred snorted.
Hermione slumped her back on the sofa, "I know. I was hasty. I should've waited for him to approach me instead of springing myself in front of him."
"You're right and he could also be saying the truth too. He could not have been the sender." Fred mentioned and captured Hermione's attention.
"Why do you say so?" Hermione asked.
"Because Granger," Fred said slowly and placed the letters on the ground. He divided it in two piles, one pile has only one letter while the other pile has the rest of the letters. "I think there's a possibility of two senders."
"That can't be!" Hermione reacted and looked at the two piles. She grabbed the one letter pile. "What.. How..?" She stuttered.
Fred grinned, "It seems that it never occurred to you huh."
"No.. not even a single moment. Why do you think so?" Hermione whispered and looked at him for explanation.
Fred gestured to the pile on the ground. "Well, I noticed that the letters in this pile is all about getting to know you and interested in you." Fred waved off and then pointed at the letter on Hermione's hand, "That one seems like a warning or an advice or something like that."
"And most importantly," Fred pulled the letter from her hands, the last letter in the pile, and placed both besides each other.
"This letter says 'it's been a while'. Why would he write this line when he just sent you a letter the day before?" Fred raised an eyebrow knowingly.
"Why didn't I notice that?" Hermione exclaimed and read the letters. "This.. Fred…"
Fred puffed out his chest jokingly, "I know, I'm brilliant, right?"
Hermione laughed, "I want to thank you actually. If you hadn't pointed that out, I would never realized it."
Fred was shocked by her compliment then scratched the back of his nape, "I reckon you'll still figure it out… but not this early."
Hermione chuckled as she gathered her things and stood up. Fred stood up as well.
Hermione smiled at him, "Thank you Fred and good night." She quickly hugged him and climbed up to her dorm.
Fred was startled by her action and froze. He watched as she climbed up the stairs. Even by just watching her back, you could see she was in a delightful mood. "Good night." Fred uttered. He paused and then shook his head.
