It was Sephie's first night at Camp Half Blood. And she was scared out of her mind. This was a whole new state and a new camp with new people. New York was very different from California.
Her father, Poseidon, or Neptune as she called him, had claimed her almost immediately after she walked into the camp. Which shocked basically everyone. Dionysus and Chiron were warned about her arrival by Zeus, Poseidon and Hera.
And apparently Hephaestus had a sense of humor. He claimed Sephie as a legacy. He had sent a message to Sephie saying it was safer for her if he did that. And to be nice to Sephie, he signed it Vulcan. He also left a charm bracelet with a whole bunch of charms that he made.
And like Diana had said many moons ago, she was claimed as Artemis's champion. Sephie was told by a camper that being the moon goddess's champion was rare.
Sephie was now out on the docks looking at the moon. Diana, or Artemis as the Greeks call her, was always her favorite. And for obvious reasons. But she will always be Diana to Sephie.
As Sephie onto the ocean wrapped in a blanket Jason had on his bed, she sang a song her mother sally used to sing to her and Jason during the summer. It was called 'Song of the Sea'. Sally had said that she learned it from Sephie's father. And it was one of the many things that connected Sephie and Jason.
Sephie remembered the days where she and Jason would never leave each other's side. They were the best of friends. And while Sephie was at camp Jupiter, the campers rarely saw one without the other. Like they were attached at the hip.
Jason was Sephie's very first kiss. And with tongue too. After that they started to date. And they were now boyfriend and girlfriend. Just the thought of Jason made Sephie smile.
Sephie continued to call and text Jason since getting off of the plane. All through dinner that night Sephie was texting Jason to calm her nerves. He calmed her through his words. He always knew just what to say.
Soon a bright orange tinted yellow flash appeared behind the young demigoddess. Sephie turns to see who it was. She saw that it was Diana. The goddess of the hunt and the moon. Sephie kneels before the goddess.
"Mi'lady." Sephie said
"Rise my champion, legacy of Vulcan." Diana said
Sephie stands up. She looks to the goddess.
"What can I do for you Lady Diana?" Sephie asked
Well technically it was Artemis in front of Sephie. But Artemis knew it wasn't Sephie's fault she was like this. She was raised as a Roman. So Artemis decided to indulge the demigod.
"Jupiter and Pluto both need you to go on a quest for them." Diana/Artemis said
"What type of quest?" Sephie asked
Sephie crosses her arms and stood on one foot. She did this when someone talked to her.
"Jupiter's master bolt and Pluto's Helm of Darkness were both stolen back on winter solstice." Diana/Artemis said
There was a pause from the goddess. And a long pause at that. It made Sephie really nervous. Waiting was never Sephie's strong suit.
"While Chiron investigates who stole said items, Jupiter wants you to find them." Diana/Artemis said
"Is there a time limit?" Sephie asked
"Yes there is. It's the summer solstice. And it cannot be any later then that." Diana/Artemis said
Sephie bit her lip and held onto the necklace Triton had made for her. Triton and Amphitrite both had jewelry commissioned for the young demigod. Which included a couple of tiara's. They said that down in Atlantis, family can give you as much jewelry as they desire.
But if a gentleman from another family gives you a necklace or something, they want to court you. Triton had a funny feeling Jason would want to give Sephie some jewelry.
Sephie took that to heart and only accepting jewelry from her mother, father, brother, stepmother, sisters and grandfather. Jason said he wanted to give her a necklace but knew of her customs.
Sephie looked to Diana. This was her first quest that did not involve camp Jupiter or any Roman. This was her first Greek quest.
"I'll take the quest." Sephie said
Diana/Artemis smiled widely at her champion.
"You'll need some back up." Diana/Artemis said
Sephie began to think. She needed people she could trust. Sephie had gotten on Clarisse La Rue's good side. Clarisse understood why Sephie was like this.
Clarisse had to do a couple of quests with the romans in the past. And Annabeth Chase's bad side. Annabeth was always trying to correct Sephie when she said the Roman name. Annabeth always got angry when Sephie said something in Roman.
But Annabeth did calm down after a minute of the rising in her temper. Annabeth did try and teach Sephie the Greek ways within the day. As Sephie got to the camp ten minutes after Chiron woke up that morning. And it was six AM at that point.
But Sephie knew how to fight with a sword. She knew how to shoot a bow and arrow. And do tricks with it. Sephie knew how to fight with her spear and trident. She was taught by the best at the camp and by the gods. And it was from a young age.
Sephie bit her lip again. Sephie knew she couldn't bring eight year old Will Solace who had gotten close to her that morning along on the quest.
"I know one. Clarisse daughter of Mars." Sephie said
"You need one more." Diana/Artemis said
Sephie though about it. It took a couple of minutes because Sephie didn't know a lot of people. She trusted the Romans more then the Greeks.
"Grover Underwood." Sephie finally said
"The Satyr?" Diana/Artemis asked in a surprised tone
"Yeah, Grover Underwood the Satyr. Is it a problem for you?" Sephie asked in a small sad worried mousey tone as her eye became dimmed in shine, sad in nature, rejected and lonely
"No it's not. I just didn't know that you would have picked a Satyr as a third." Diana/Artemis said
"So, you don't want me to bring the Satyr?" Sephie asked
"I would rather you bring a child of Venus. They're ruthless when you get them mad. And curtain Satyr's are wimps. Like Mr. Grover Underwood." Diana/Artemis said
"Fine I'll bring Luke Castellan son of Mercury." Sephie said in defeat
Sephie had a funny feeling that Annabeth would betray them. And by funny feeling, Sephie means that Octavian had a vision and told Sephie right before she left California. Sephie knew she needed to make sure that Luke was not the one Octavian's vision meant.
Diana/Artemis left the camp to get ready. Sephie went to the cabin and to bed. She needed some sleep before the quest in the morning. She needed the rest. She needed to be alert.
As Sephie slept, she dreamt of her boyfriend Jason. She dreamt of their wedding. Her brother walking her down the aisle.
Sephie woke the next morning. She wrapped herself in Jason's old purple and gold camp Jupiter T-shirt that she took from his dresser a couple days before. She then hid the shirt with Jason's grizzly river run hoodie. And Jason had written his name on the left arm.
He gotten the hoodie when Sally took them and a couple others to Disneyland and California Adventure for the first time a few of years ago. It was one of the best days they ever had.
Sephie, Jason and Hazel made plans to go back when one of them got a license. And a job so they could have money for the park.
Sephie walked to the big house. It's where the camp director, Chiron, and the overseeing god, Dionysus or Bacchus as Sephie called him, were housed. That was where the note from Sephie's patron said to go.
On the way there Clarisse came up to her. Clarisse had a big smile on her face as she saw her friend.
"Hey there Roman." Clarisse said
Roman was Clarisse's nickname for Sephie. Sephie smiled to her friend. She shook her head and chuckled a little.
"Hey Greek." Sephie said
"I see that you are wearing Grace's hoodie. As I expected." Clarisse said
Clarisse then lifted the hoodie to see a purple shirt.
"And his his shirt I see. You know if anyone see's that they are going to call you a traitor." Clarisse said
"Shut up Clarisse." Sephie said with a smile and a small chuckle
"You love him. You love the Roman." Clarisse teased
"He's my boyfriend Clarisse. Of course I love him. And as his girlfriend it's my job to take clothes from him." Sephie said
The two girl continued to talk and laugh as they walked for the big house from the arts and crafts area. When they got there, they met Luke there. He was sitting on top of the semi large bolder near the front door. Luke was waiting to be let in by Chiron or Dionysus.
Luke looked up to see two girls coming to him. One of them he didn't recognize. Sephie was introduced to the camp last night but Luke was down in DC taking a shift at his father's shipping store. All of his siblings take shifts to earn some money to spend in the mortal world.
The Aphrodite cabin does the same thing at their mother's retail/makeup store in New York City. Demeter owns organic grocery stores in New York City and San Francisco.
"Hi. I'm Luke Castellan." He said
Sephie shook his hand.
"I'm Persephone Jackson. But I go by Sephie." Sephie said
"So Sephie. Where you from?" Luke asked
"The San Francisco Bay Area." Sephie asked
Luke knew Sephie was from a city near the Roman camp. But he didn't say anything just in case Sephie didn't know. Chiron soon let the three demigods into the house. The three sat at the same table as the wine god and the goddess of the hunt.
"Hello Mr. D. Hello Lady Artemis." Luke and Clarisse said
"Hello Lord Bacchus. Hello Lady Diana." Sephie said
Luke looked confused. He was sure that Sephie didn't know of the Roman's.
"What just happened?" Luke asked
"Sephie was raised as a Roman." Diana/Artemis said
"Really?" Luke asked
"Yeah she was. I've did a couple quests with some Roman's in the past so I know the difference." Clarisse said
"That is one reason why I live in San Francisco. My mother is the demigod daughter of the god Vulcan. And she helps out at camp Jupiter every summer. The Roman's trust me." Sephie said
"Now to the quest." Dionysus said
"As I told Sephie last night, Zeus's master bolt and Hades's Helm of Darkness was stolen during winter solstice. Zeus and Hades both want Sephie to find the items." Diana/Artemis said
"Why isn't Zeus blaming Sephie? Poseidon's trident wasn't stolen." Luke asked
"If you were listening to Sephie, she said she has lived in California all her life. And Zeus knows this because he has visited her in the past. He knows that Sephie didn't believe in the Greeks until this summer. So how can she steel the items if she wasn't here in New York?" Diana/Artemis says
The room quieted down. Luke accepted the fact that Zeus is not blaming the daughter of Poseidon.
"And as I was saying before I was rudely interrupted by Mr. Castellan over here. Zeus and Hades both want Sephie, their niece, to find their missing items. And Sephie told me last night that she wants the both of you to come with her to help her out." Diana/Artemis said
Luke started to think. Annabeth has been acting funny since the winter solstice. All jittery and jumpy. And Annabeth was becoming paranoid beyond belief. At breakfast Luke overheard Annabeth come up with conspiracy theories about Sephie.
Chiron sent Sephie up to the Oracle of Delphi. When she entered the room, Sephie saw mummified corpse of the last Oracle.
'I am the spirit of Delphi, speaker of the prophecies of Phoebus Apollo, slayer of the mighty Python. Approach, seeker, and ask.'
Sephie took a deep breath.
"What is my destiny?" Sephie asked
The Oracle opened its mouth and mist like substance came out of it. The mist surrounded Sephie completely. Sephie soon saw her mother Sally, her clear sighted mortal grandmother Maria, her best friend Hazel Levesque, the daughter of Pluto and her boyfriend Jason.
They were all standing in line facing Sephie. The scene was the Garden Café in camp Jupiter. And the weird thing was, the Café had people at the tables. And they were eating.
This creeped Sephie out.
Sally went first. She said, 'You shall go west, and face the god who has turned.'
Sephie thought that was obvious. It was Hades. Or Pluto as Sephie always called him whenever he visited. The entrance to the underworld was in Los Angelus.
Grandma Maria was next. She said, 'You shall find what was stolen, and see it safely returned.'
Sephie thought of Zeus's lightening bolt and Hades helm of darkness. The items that help them with their duties.
Hazel said, 'You shall be betrayed by the one who calls you a friend.'
That was referring to what Octavian said to Sephie a few days ago in New Rome.
And finally, Jason said, 'And you shall fail to save what matters the most, in the end.'
Now that part was really tricky. What was she going to fail to save? But Octavian once told Sephie years ago that most prophecies told to demigods that are going on quests have double meanings to them and not to dwell on what was said.
Sephie went back down and retold the prophecy word for word. Even the part about the betrayal.
Dionysus told the three demigods to go and get their supplies. He knew Sephie always carried a bag for quests. The bag looked like a purse but was bigger on the inside. It was like Sephie pulled it out of the last Harry Potter book.
That was where Sephie and her uncles got the inspiration for the bag. They wanted to see if they could actually make the items from the book. When Sephie left, the children of Vulcan were trying to make the tent from book four.
Chiron left for the infirmary to get ambrosia and nectar for the group. Diana/Artemis decided to give Sephie the bow and arrow set and the throwing knives her hunters use.
They all met up by a truck that said Half-blood Hill Strawberries on the side.
"Good luck Persephone Jackson." Chiron said
"Thank you Chiron." Sephie said
Sephie climbed into the truck and sat next to Clarisse.
