"Mom, Dad, Kassi can we talk for a moment?"
Charlie asked one day when he walked into the house from school as the family gathered in the kitchen as they looked to each other,
"What is it, Charlie?"
Della asked, confused as Charlie nodded.
"I'm considering enlisting in the Air Force. Dad, you served in the Navy during the second World War. Wouldn't you be proud to have a son who decided to enlist like you did? I also want to protect others. Not matter who they are. I want this to be my way of standing up to injustice."
Perry and Della looked to each other as Perry nodded before they went into the living room,
"Oh, Perry."
Perry nodded,
"He's seen pictures of me in my Navy uniform. It's about time. I'm proud of him. But I just hope that he doesn't have to go fight in heavy combat areas. I know that I still have nightmares from my time in Japan."
Della nodded as Kassi sighed,
"You're my best friend, why didn't you tell me sooner?"
Charlie sighed,
"I talked with Uncle Paul. He suggested that I go ahead and enlist."
Kassi sighed as she took Charlie's hands in hers,
"I trust you."
She said even though she was exceptionally nervous, more so nervous about what life would be without Charlie home.
Della sighed as she nodded,
"If this is something he wants to do, there's only one option. Support him, and for us to not baby him or guilt trip him into staying. But I do want him to go to school. Maybe send him to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. I heard students are commissioned when they graduate."
Perry nodded as they walked back into the kitchen as Charlie looked up as Perry began to speak,
"I served in the Navy during the second World War. It seems fitting that you'd want to do the same. Your Mother and I will support you all the way through college, we want you to go to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, as you'll be commissioned at graduation."
Charlie nodded,
"I promise to make all of you proud, especially you Daddy."
Everyone smiled as Kassi snuggled close to her brother as Charlie hugged her close.
