Harrison's POV
McGonagall leads everyone through two large doors and into the Great Hall, where there are four long tables with thousands of students, as well as floating candles. The roof appears to be the sky.
A bushy-haired girl commented, "It's not real, the ceiling. It's just bewitched to look like the night sky. I read about it in Hogwarts A History."
McGonagall leads the first-years to the front where the Sorting Hat lies on the stool. She asked but it was more of an order, "Will you wait along here, please? Now, before we begin, Professor Dumbledore would like to say a few words."
Dumbledore rises from the main table. His aunt's description of the man that tried to manipulate his life from the beginning was accurate. If Harrison didnt have his knowledge then he might have trusted the old man.
Dumbledore began, "I have a few start of term notices I wish to announce. The first years please note that the dark forest is strictly forbidden to all students. Also, our caretaker, Mr. Filch," a ragged old man, called Mr. Argus Filch, with his cat with red eyes, could be seen in the corner, "has asked me to remind you that the 3rd-floor corridor on the right-hand side is out of bounds to everyone who does not wish to die a most painful death. Thank you."
He sat back down and McGonagall continued, "When I call your name, you will come forth, I shall place the sorting hat on your head, and you will be sorted into your houses. Hannah Abbott."
Harrison watched as different children went up and were sorted. The Sorting Hat didnt take very long in choosing. Some it would barely touch their heads.
He barely looked up when a girl with bushy brown hair walked forward. He barely heard the name, Hermione Granger. It was the girl that had stated facts about the ceiling.
Granger sat on the stool and McGonagall places the sorting hat on her head. Sorting Hat yelled after a moment, "Gryffindor!"
That was unexpected. She seemed to be a bookworm and would have done well as a Ravenclaw. He wondered if there was a possibility she talked it out of placing her there. Or if she had more bravery than she appeared. To be honest he doubted it was the latter but only time would tell.
As he expected Draco was sorted into Slytherin. His friend shot him a smug look as he headed towards the Slytherin Table.
McGonagall said after called moments, "Harry Potter."
Everything goes silent. Harry walks up and sits down on the stool. The Sorting Hat is placed on his head.
Came an unfamiliar voice, "Hmm...difficult, very difficult. Plenty of courage I see. An excellent mind, no doubt from your studies to be an alchemist. If you let them those will carry you far. Talent, oh yes, and a thirst to prove yourself. But where to put you?:
Anywhere but Gryffindor. While he had bravery he did not want to end up where the old man would watch him constantly. Though if he was honest he knew that the old man would watch him no matter his house. Not being in Gryffindor would keep him away from those like Weasley.
The Hat commented, :Definitely not Gryffindor. While you have the bravery it is not the brash bravery of the more recent students. You would not find easy friendships there. On the same hand, you would not do well in Hufflepuff. Your loyalty must be earned and it could be lost easily. So that leaves us with Slytherin and Ravenclaw.:
Ravenclaw would be better than Slytherin if he wanted to stay under the radar. Being in Slytherin would have Dumbledore watching him just as closely as if he was in Gryffindor. As much as he would like to be in the same house as Draco it wouldn't help him.
The Hat said thoughtfully, :So you have made your decision then. Better be...: Then out loud it yelled, "RAVENCLAW!"
His robes changed to being black with blue trim and having the Ravenclaw crest. Shooting Draco a smile he walked over to his new table. Terry Boot scooted over so that he could sit.
A boy the same age as himself with brown eyes questioned, "Are you really Harry Potter? You don't look like much. Everyone expected you to go into Gryffindor like your parents."
Harrison replied coldly, "I am my own person. Because they were killed when I was one I never knew my parents. I enjoy reading books and learning new things. Before I got my Hogwarts letter I was planning on sitting for a special muggle exam."
Granger who was a couple of seats down from him, "You don't have to be rude about it. It was a fair question. I'm Hermione Granger by the way. I've read all about you."
Narrowing his eyes he said, "You can't believe everything you read, and considering no one has conferred with me in any books I wouldn't believe them."
Harrison heard the hat called out Gryffindor for the Weasley. As the boy passed the table he shot Harrison an angry look. Stupid boy, he thought that he could automatically be his friend. Friendship like trust is earned through time.
Then finally food appeared before them and they were allowed to eat. Harrison had never seen so much food. It was more than enough to feed an army. Or in this case a school full of hungry teenagers.
There were a handful of announcements before they went off to common rooms. While he did not look back he could feel several pairs of eyes on his back watching him. He would have to be cautious from now on unless he wanted to be caught in a trap.
