A/N – Another song inspired fic. Doesn't follow lyrics, just inspired by. Had this idea a while back, it got shelved, then listening to the song again and got a whole different idea.

Takes place during CoE Day for and shortly after. Weird since the whole thing doesn't exist in my world, but hey… I go where the muse takes me.

Since I've never fully watched it, some things may not be accurate and I'm pretty sure Gwen wasn't there, but hey... my fic and my rules.

If I Can't Love Him

No! Not him! I'll give you anything but not him!

I love you.

Don't.

Gwen watched the cctv with horror as Jack railed against the alien in the box. She couldn't hear his words, but she could see the desperation in his body language. His attention was brought back to his partner as the younger man began to waver. Jack caught Ianto before he could fall. She watched helplessly as the two men couched on the floor. Ianto was cradled in the captain's arms. She could see the tenderness between them, words being spoken that no other ears were ever meant to hear.

As she watched a glow seemed to surround the two men, it grew steadily and eventually engulfed the entire room, the video feed went to static.

Two Days Later

Jack slowly opened his eyes, then closed them again with a groan. The harsh light was too much.

"Jack, it's okay. It's Gwen. I'm here, love. I've turned off the light."

He opened his eyes again and saw a blurry image of Gwen Cooper smiling down at him. Blinking a few times, the image finally came into focus. Something was wrong. He'd expected a morgue. This was a hospital room. He tried to look around.

"It's okay, Jack. You're in the hospital. You're fine… well, mostly fine."

He tried to sit up. His mind flashed back. Ianto! Where was Ianto? He needed to help him!

"Ianto." The name came out barely a whisper. His throat felt dry and gravelly.

Gwen gently pushed him back to the bed.

"He's here, love." She moved aside and motioned to the other bed in the room. Jack saw Ianto lying peacefully. "He's just sleeping, Jack. He's fine. Just a big banged up like you."

Banged up? Jack tried to get up again, and pain shot through his body.

"Jack, please lie down." Gwen pushed him back with a bit more force, but still with care. "You're hurt. Just relax."

"What happened? Did I die? Why a hospital?" He croaked.

"Shh, it's okay." She offered him a sip of water from a cup on the nightstand. "You and Ianto have been here for two days."

"Two days?" He gasped. How could he be in so much pain after two days. He looked down and saw his arms covered with scrapes and bruises.

She noticed his gaze. "The glass from the containment box shattered over the two of you."

Taking a deep breath, she told him about watching the cctv footage. When the feed ended, she wanted to rush into the room to help her fellow team members and friends. Reaching the door to the containment room, she pushed past the soldiers guarding the doors. She tried to open them, but they wouldn't budge. Not locked, but somehow sealed. She could hear a commotion from inside the room, like some kind of storm. Then came the thunder of glass shattering and finally silence. After a moment, the door clicked open.

Gun in hand, Gwen slowly stepped through the doorway. The room was in shambles, glass and metal littered the floor, dust settling. Wanting to find Jack and Ianto, she knew she had to secure the room first. She stepped over to where the enclosure had been and did a cursory search of the rubble. There was no evidence of the alien… just piles of dust. Turning away, she quickly found Jack and Ianto covered with shattered glass and debris, cradled in each other's arms. Checking them over, she was surprised that they both seemed to be alive… unconscious and badly injured but definitely alive.

"The virus?" Jack asked.

Gwen shrugged. "No sign of it. Absolutely nothing."

A groan from the other bed got their attention. Gwen stood up and moved over.

"Hey, Ianto." She smiled. "Welcome back, pet."

A few days later, the hospital released Jack and Ianto. Both men were still covered in scrapes and bruises and were in more pain than either would admit. They sat together in the back seat as Rhys drove back to Cardiff. The news on the radio was reporting the still falling ash from the other alien ships that had been orbiting the planet. No one could figure out what had caused them all to practically disintegrate.

"Why haven't your wounds healed? Are you okay?" Ianto had quietly asked Jack, as he rand his fingers over a particularly nasty scrape.

Jack took his lover's hand. "Got worse from shaving." He smiled softly.

"I wish we knew what happed in that room." Gwen mused from the passenger seat. "It's almost like a miracle happened. "Ianto said he loved you and then the room went white."

Jack shrugged. "Sometimes it's best not to question too much."

Gwen went silent for a moment, then "When I was trying to get into the room, I thought I heard… no…"

"Heard what, Gwen?" Jack asked.

"Well… I could have sworn I heard a voice… a female voice."

Jack looked at Ianto, then back to Gwen. "A female voice? What did it say? Anything?"

"Its weird that I didn't remember before, I think with all that happened I just kind of forgot."

Jack sat forward. "Gwen... What… did…it… say?"

She thought for a moment. "It said something about Bad Wolf… and being loved… granting you one life."

Jack gasped.

"Jack? Are you okay?" Ianto asked.

Jack turned to the Welshman. "Bad wolf, Ianto."

Ianto's eyes widened. Jack had told him what had happened on the game station.

"One life." The younger man whispered. "Does that mean?"

Both men glanced at the bruises and scrapes littering Jack's arms, then smiled.

"You're going to have to learn to be a bit less cavalier, sir." Ianto smiled leaning into Jack's embrace.

I am the Bad Wolf. You are loved, Jack Harkness. I grant you your one life.

End

Reviews are love.

I knew the beginning and I knew where I wanted it to end. Hope the journey worked.
