Shoulders slouched, hands in her pockets, Sam walked down her street home. The late afternoon sky already turned into a red evening sheen. Staring at her feet, she paid no mind to her surroundings, including the van approaching her and stopping on the other side of the road. Only as the driver pulled down the window and called out to her, she finally turned her head: "There you are! Was checking by your house, but your mum said you were still at school."
"Oh, hey Chunk" Sam said, smiling at him. Then she frowned. "Wait, are you leaving already? What about your big sendoff tonight?"
"Don't worry, I ain't going nowhere yet - just here to drop someone off." He turned towards the co-driver seat, where Sam could see someone sitting. "Come on, love – time to get this show on the road."
The co-driver's door opened. A bit hesitant, Luna stepped out of the van into Sam's sight. From opposites sides of the street, the two girls silently looked at each other. Then, Luna jumped across the street as Chunk started his engine again.
"Alright, I'll leave you two to talk things out" Chunk said as he got rolling again. "See ya later!" His van vanished down the street, leaving Luna and Sam alone with each other. Awkwardly, the two teens fidgeted around.
"Hey."
"Hey."
As it dawned around them, they stood there on the sidewalk, stuck in a loop of searching eye-contact only to immediately turn their heads when they found it. Eyes on the ground, Sam eventually cleared her throat. "So… are you mad at me?" she asked.
"What? No!" Luna yelled. More quietly, she asked back: "Are… are you mad at me?"
"Course not!" Sam immediately replied.
Again, silence. "It's just weird" both said at the same time.
They flinched, looked at each other in surprise, then laughed. "You go first" Sam said.
Luna rubbed her shoulder. "I know you don't like to dance. Still, I started dancing around you." She sighed. "I'm sorry."
Sam shook her head. "You don't need to apologize for having fun on a date – your passion is one of the things I love about you. Besides, I told you it's okay."
Luna sat down on the edge of the sidewalk. "You said that, but I knew it wasn't okay. I knew you were uncomfortable. Because of me, you felt bad, and…" She lowered her head. "That sucks."
Sam sat down next to her. "Luna, you can never make me feel bad" she told her. Also lowering her head, she murmured: "If anything, I am the one making you feel bad..."
"That's bogus!" Luna told her.
"It's not! I know you want to dance with me. And…" Sam bit her lip. "I want to dance with you, too" she finally said.
Immediately Luan sat up straight. "Really?"
"Of course! I want to hold you, move my body with yours, want to be close to you. I just… can't." She cowered on the sidewalk, pulling her hair. "I could rip my hair out over it! I wish I could dance and make that connection with you, but…"
She fell silent. For a moment, Luna watched Sam dissolve into a miserable pile of self-pity. Suddenly, the brunette cracked a smile. "Then let's do it!"
Raising her head, Sam looked at Luna in confusion. "What?"
"Let's dance! Right here, right now." From her pocket, Luna pulled out her smartphone. A few touches and slides later, she placed it on the sidewalk, the playlist of her favorite Mick Swagger songs playing. As she jumped on her feet, she paused. "If, um, if you don't mind we're in public and all…"
"That's not the problem" Sam said. Looking up and down the street, she added: "An empty street doesn't really count as public, anyway."
"Well then, let's go!" Smiling in excitement, Luna held out her hand.
Sam looked skeptically at her. "Are… are you sure? I'll only end up tripping over your feet…"
"It's okay. We'll take it nice and slow."
With mixed feelings, the blonde took Luna's hand. As she got up on her feet the two girls interlaced their fingers, staring into each other's eyes.
"Ready?" Luna asked.
Sam nodded.
"Okay. On my mark."
Bopping her head Luna made slight squats to the music. Though nervous, Sam did the same, until both were in sync. Then, as the melody entered a loop, Luna made the first step. Butterflies in her stomach, Sam followed. Step by step, Luna led her around, and she managed to keep up for a while. But soon, her feet couldn't match the tempo anymore, and she kept stepping on the wrong spot. Frustrated she wanted to stop, but Luna tightened her grip on her hands. "Keep going" she said.
"But I'm way off beat!"
"It's cool. Just focus on me."
Instead of following the music, Luna began to match her moves to Sam's. When Sam got out of sync, Luna adjusted, and when her missteps made her to falter, Luan twisted herself a bit so she wouldn't tumble. "You're doing great" Luna praised her, although they more or less stumbled around the sidewalk.
Trying not to trip over her own feet, Sam laughed. "I know a beat Lunes, even if I can't dance to it – we are just moving randomly to the music."
"And what's so bad about that?"
Sam didn't reply. Their movements slowed down, to the point where they were just stepping around the spot. Still, although she knew they were completely off-key and there was no elegance to what they did, just moving like this with Luna was giving Sam a warm feeling. The butterflies in her stomach dissolved as she let herself go with the flow of the music.
When she felt her girlfriend was more at ease, Luna flashed a grin at her. "Ready for the real deal?" she asked.
With new-found confidence, Sam smirked back. "Let's!"
Carefully, Luna began to add some more sway to her moves, then turned around. Sam followed, keeping eye-contact with Luna as they switched positions. Just as they completed their turn, before Sam even had a chance to lose balance, they spun again, and then again and again. Hand in hand they whirled around each other, loosely following the beat of the music.
The faster they moved, the more slowly time seemed to go by for the two girls. Everything around them faded as their world revolved around the other. Lost in each other's eyes, they didn't really notice their faces drawing closer and closer. When they did, they closed their eyes, and leaned towards each other. A shiver went down their spines as their lips touched, before all tension dissolved into blissful warmth. Skin tingling, they pulled their arms around each other, still spinning around as their lips locked into a kiss.
Then, just as they softly pulled back, Sam stumbled over her feet, dragging Luna along as she fell to the ground.
The two girls yelped as they hit the sidewalk. Lying under her girlfriend Sam laughed, and Luna joined in. "I'm glad no one saw that" Sam said. As she had calmed down again, she wrapped her arms around Luna on top of her. "But I'm even more glad we did this. It was amazing."
Returning the embrace, Luna grinned down on her. "So, how about we hit the dance floor at Chunk's send-off later?"
Sam laughed. "I'll stick to my bass." The two got back on their feet, Luna picking up her phone and putting it back into her pocket. Their faces red from exhaustion and excitement, they looked each other in the eyes. "Thanks, Lunes" Sam whispered.
Gently, Luna stroke Sam's cheek. "Anything for you, love."
