Okay, I am sorry I didn't upload yesterday. I was tired and just feeling a bit lazy that's my bad. But let's continue. I hope you all enjoy and review!
Chapter Twelve
Tali and I sat in easy silence as we made our way to the hospital. We went to Miranda's office. She was sitting at her desk and stood when she saw us enter.
"Garrus. I wasn't expecting you."
"Can we see her?" I asked.
"I'll walk with you." She led the way toward the new room. As she walked she talked. "Shepard is in much the same state. I'm not sure if she told you but Tali had me move her to the teaching OR." She turned to look back at me and I nodded. She stopped in the middle of the hallway. Doctors and nurses brushed past us without a care. "Are you sure you can handle this course of action? We can look for other solutions."
"Go ahead and look, but I'll be okay."
She took us up a narrow and slightly hidden set of stairs to a small room. There were several chairs sitting in a row facing a large window. I stepped forward and looked down on the pristine white room below. Again, Shepard was surrounded by machines, hooked up with tubes and wires. Tali took a seat just behind me. This scene was new to her. There was a moment of silence as she took it all in.
Miranda, still standing by the stairs, said, "There is a comm terminal on the wall there, you can talk to me or the crew on the Normandy whenever you want. Spend as much time here as you like, as often as you like." She turned to her data pad. "I've granted you full access to this room. You can bring any one guest with you at a time." I nodded and she left.
I sat in the seat next to Tali. I stared down at Shepard as Tali spoke. "When you said it was bad… I never imagined…"
"Yeah." I was finding it hard to look at her, but oddly comforting. It wasn't as painful being here as I'd imagined. I was grateful for that fact.
We sat there for a long while, listening to the faint but constant beeps of the machinery downstairs. I don't know what spurred me to start talking but I did.
"When she was… coding?... When her heart stopped… The panic, the pain in my chest… I wasn't sure if she was dying… or if I was."
Tali took my hand. "You looked like you were dying. Just like right after we crashed and you put her name on the wall of the dead."
"I felt like I was then, too."
"We can go whenever you want. I don't think Shepard would want me to see her like this… I don't want to see her like this."
"Go on without me… I would like some time alone."
"Okay." She turned and left.
Once I could no longer hear her footsteps on the stairs, I stood, placing my hand on the glass. Shepard looked as frail as ever. Again I was unsure as to what exactly brought my religious side out. But I prayed.
"By the Spirits. The Spirit of Palaven, the Spirit of Miranda's team keeping her alive, the Spirit of the Warrior. Please bring the Spirit of Warrior Shepard back into the Spirit of the Normandy."
