Reese sat across from Christian at the narrow table in the warm dimly lit café; their knees shyly danced with each other under the table as the soft jazz music filled the room. Reese's body swayed to the smooth sound as she sipped her tea. The only thing that was missing was the gentle sound of rain tapping on the café window. Christian stared at her as her eyes closed and her body moved rhythmically to the notes; she was lost to the music and he was mesmerized.
"Would you like to dance?" he whispered gently.
Reese opened her eyes and stared blankly at Christian. There was a gentleness in his eyes, almost desperate. People always say that the eyes are the window to the soul and in that fleeting moment Reese could see his.
"I don't think we can dance in here," she said looking around.
"You can dance anywhere," he said without breaking his gaze, "Come on," he continued standing and holding out his hand.
The slow music twirled like thread around them and her body fell into his; the warmth of his body was comforting, something she hadn't felt since Collin and didn't realize she missed. Christian swayed her body against his gently and she rested her head on his chest. Occasionally, she would lose her footing and squish his foot under her own, he didn't mind though he would just smile and continue to dance; he enjoyed the comfort of her body. He was lonely too. They were caught up in this perfect moment and all that mattered was the comfort of each other.
"Ms. Sutherlin," Christian whispered.
"Yes," she replied softly.
"The music stopped."
"Oh," she paused, pulling away from him, "Sorry I must have-"
"It's okay," he said with a half-smile, "Shall we?" he said motioning back to the table."
"Yes," she said following him back to the table.
"So," he said plopping down in his chair.
"So?" she said with a slight smirk, raising a brow.
"It appears that I do know what you like," he smirked.
"What?" she lightly chuckled.
"On the way here, you mumbled that I didn't know what you like."
"And you still don't," she smirked.
"I knew you would like this place but specifically I knew you would like the jazz music," he smiled.
"How did you figure?"
"I'm observant."
"Meaning?"
"Meaning I noticed the small music note tattoo behind your left ear."
"Okay," her voice trailed as she gently touched the flesh behind her ear, "that could just mean that I am a lover of music."
"It could," he nodded, "except for…no never mind," he said sipping his tea.
"What," she said leaning in.
"The first time you came to my house, when you broke in," he smirked, "I watched you pull in from the second-floor balcony. You were listening to Chet Baker."
"You were watching me," she said softly.
"I couldn't take my eyes off of you," he said staring at her, "and not just because you were uninvitingly coming into my home."
"Oh," she swallowed hard, "Why then?"
"Oh, Ms. Sutherlin, the night is still early. I don't want to scare you away too soon," he grinned.
"Well I thought we were supposed to be getting to know each other… you know for the sake of our business relationship," she smiled, "Don't hold back now."
"Fine," he said firmly, "Truth."
"Truth," she said firmly before taking another sip of her tea.
"I was imagining ripping off that tight little red dress you were wearing," he said clenching his jaw.
Reese spit out her tea, splashing a little on him and stared at him blankly. He winced at the hot tea getting on him; was he serious.
"I'm so sorry," she said rushing over to help wipe the tea off him.
"It's okay," he said wiping himself, "Although I can't say I've ever gotten that reaction before."
"Does that work on women?" she said sitting.
"What?"
"Objectifying them," she said raising her brow, "If you rip any clothes off me, you better be willing to pay for them."
"I can assure you I can afford it," he smirked, "And replacing your clothes would be the last thing you would be thinking about."
"Oh really?"
"If you were mine, you would be more concerned about resting. I would have you body sore for weeks," he said confidently, clenching his jaw again.
"But I'm not yours…and you still belong to someone else," she uttered.
