So the truth finally spills, not in a trickle, but a torrent, causing my tall, sturdy walls to give way and crumble under the barrage of words that will set me free.
I start with how I formed my alliance with Alvin. How blackmail is a very powerful weapon in his hands. How the only thing I crave- all I've ever craved- is to be free.
By the way they're all staring at me when my explanation is done, I can tell they're contemplating my words. Deciding if they can trust them. To trust me.
Astrid is the first to speak. "Why didn't you just say that before?" She holds out her hand and I grasp it before I could rethink it. That was unexpected. I didn't think Astrid would welcome me so fast, even after I explained myself.
"Ha. I've known you were innocent the whole time. Pay up, Tuff."
"Actually, that's not entirely true Snotlout." Fishlegs clears his throat dramatically. "'How could my one and only love betray me like this. Curse you, Loki.' End scene."
"Can it, Fishface."
While the squabbling goes on in the background, I reach into Windshear's saddlebag and pull out the Book of Dragons. I walk over to to where Hiccup is conversing with Astrid near Toothless. Presumably making a game plan. Or discussing my fate.
I try to shake the thought away, yet it lingers as I hand the book off to Hiccup. He locks eyes with me, as though he can see through to my soul. However, he accepts the offering with a smile. "I knew you'd come around."
I break eye contact with him first. "I'm so sorry for all the trouble I caused. If you want me to leave, I'll do so peacefully."
"That's ridiculous," says Hiccup. "We can't just turn you away after you poured your struggle to us. Come back to Berk and we'll talk to my dad. We'll help you, Heather."
All I can utter is a small "Thank you."
