Title: Changing For The Better

Summary: Due to some interfering witches, a hot night between Katherine and Stefan results in her being pregnant. Stefan starts off by forgiving her and eventually falls in love. Katherine starts off by trying to get Stefan and then she ends up changing. Elena is not happy about any of it. Steferine and slowburn Bamon. Anti-Delena. Takes place after Katherine helps Stefan with his PTSD in Season 5.

Rating: M for Mature due to smut scenes.

Warnings: Not for fans of Elena or Delena. Elena may seem OOC in this story but I'm channeling all my frustration with this character into my writing.

Chapter 13: Lovers to friends, friends to enemies

Jeremy and Bonnie meet at the Grill for lunch. "Hey," Bonnie says and kisses him on the cheek. Both of them feel like the spark that was once there has disappeared.

"Do you feel like something is missing?" Jeremy asks her, looking deep into her eyes.

"I do," Bonnie admits, "I care about you so much and I do love you, but it's like something has changed."

"You're right," Jeremy agrees with her, "I love you, but I'm not in love with you and I feel like trying to force us to work is going to hold you back from something amazing and I don't ever want to do that to you."

"So, does this mean we're breaking up?" Bonnie asks.

"I don't want to think of it that way… That makes it seem awful. It's just more like our relationship is transitioning back to friends," Jeremy holds her hand and squeezes lightly.

"I like that," Bonnie smiles at him. They hug goodbye and Bonnie heads over to the Salvatore Boarding House.

Katherine paces around the room. Jeremy isn't here so she can't play duos on video games. Nadia is away getting advice for some witch about the pregnancy. Matt is working at the Grill. Caroline isn't around. Bonnie is busy. Stefan just left. That leaves Katherine with two options – Damon and Elena. Katherine groans.

"Well, I suppose Damon is better option," Katherine shrugs before heading downstairs.

Damon is sipping on some bourbon when Katherine walks into the room and sits on the couch across from him. She doesn't say anything, she just watches him stare at his phone. He finds it unnerving. "What do you want?" Damon blurts out eventually.

"Do you like Bonnie?" Katherine asks in an innocent tone. Damon chokes on his drink as if there's vervain in it.

"What?" Damon asks nervously, "Why would you ask me that?"

Katherine smirks. "So, you do like Bonnie?"

"How could I like Bonnie of all people? I mean she's Bonnie… She's just the judgy resident witch. Don't be stupid Katherine," Damon denies.

"Gee thanks, Damon," Bonnie says from the doorway, "It's always nice to hear how awful I am." She turns on her heel and walks out angrily.

"Shit!" Damon curses and runs after her.

"Bonnie! Bonnie, wait!" Damon calls out. He speeds in front of her.

"Why? Is there any other way you'd like to tell me how horrible I am? Or that I'm only useful for my magic?" Bonnie asks him angrily. He opens his mouth but can't find the words to say.

She scoffs and starts walking away. "If you follow me, I will give you the worst aneurysm of your life," Bonnie threatens before adding, "Tell Katherine I'll be back tomorrow when Stefan is here."

Damon speeds back inside and collapses on the couch. Katherine hands him a drink. "Thought you might need this."

"Thanks," Damon says as he grabs the glass from her. "What's your sudden interest in my love life anyway?"

"So, you admit you like Bonnie?" Katherine teases before shrugging, "I'm bored."

"Well, it doesn't matter now anyway," Damon says closing his eyes. Katherine frowns.

"No, that's not how it works," Katherine rolls her eyes, "You have to get her to forgive you."

"What's the point? Even if she does forgive me, she's still going to think I'm an asshole. And she's dating Jeremy anyway." Damon groans, "Besides why am I talking to you of all people about this?"

Katherine perks up. "Firstly, if you don't get her to forgive you then how are you going to make her fall for you? Secondly, you are an asshole, but I suspect Bonnie could make you more tolerable. Thirdly, you didn't hear this from me, but they broke up. And lastly, you're talking to me about it because I am awesome."

Damon sits up straighter. "What? How would you even know that they broke up?"

Katherine shrugs. "Jeremy texted me. They decided it would be best if they went back to being friends. Now are we going to work on getting you and Bonnie Bennett together or not?"

Damon stares at Katherine in disbelief. "How are you so sure about my feelings for Bonnie?"

"Because I can see the way you look at her, the way you perk up whenever she's brought up, the fact that you voluntarily went to help someone, the fact that you chose to spend time with me who you hate just so you could run into her," Katherine starts listing things, "I could go on, but I think you get the point."

Damon's eyes widen in realization. Bonnie has been changing him for the better and he's only now realizing. "I like Bonnie Bennett," Damon admits aloud. Katherine smiles from ear to ear. As much as it has always been Stefan, a little part of her cared about Damon and wanted him to be happy.

"I can't believe I'm saying this, but thanks Katherine," Damon says with a smile.

"Think of it as me making up for the past," Katherine smiles back, "And I'm not done yet. I'm going to help you get Bonnie Bennett."

Stefan sighs as he hits another dead end… No matter how many witches he contacts none of them have any answers. The cure has never been used before so the outcome of Katherine once the baby is born is anyone's guess. After a long day of searching and reading, Stefan returns home exhausted to find Damon drinking while music plays and Katherine dances.

"Wow… I leave you guys together for a day and you're not enemies anymore?" Stefan grins at them.

"We've decided we have some mutual interests," Damon shrugs, "Speaking of… I have things to do so she's all yours baby brother." He leaves the room.

"All mine?" Stefan says aloud, "I like the sound of that." He pulls her in closer and kisses her softly. They pull away to allow her some oxygen.

"I missed this," Katherine says as she rests her head on his chest. He uses fingers to trace circles on her back.

"I missed this too." He closes his eyes and takes in her scent.

Elena looks out the window sadly thinking of Katherine being in Stefan's arms.

"That should have been me," Elena says as she sobs into her pillow wishing that she had been the one Stefan was having a baby with.

It doesn't occur to her that Damon just broke up with her and she should be more focused on that. All Elena feels is anger and jealousy towards Katherine. Katherine is getting to be something she will never be...

A mother.
