Author's Note: I guess this fic counts as AU because it doesn't have Jakob in it. I haven't seen the film yet and I can't be bothered to write him in so AU it is. Going to post two chapters today!

Letty and Mia's first year of high school.

Chapter 7

The first year of high school was off to a crummy start. Letty didn't have a single class with her best friend Mia since the other girl had high enough scores to be in all the college prep level courses and the best Letty could manage was 'general'. She didn't really give a shit, after all she couldn't afford to go to college if she even wanted to. And all her life as long as she could remember, all she wanted to do was work on cars anyway. What did her algebra grades matter?

But it turned out it kind of sucked to not have Mia with her in class. Instead she ended up with the kids who didn't give a shit for one reason or another. Some were like her, some had worse home lives, some had no excuse and were just being rebels.

Luckily they at least had the same lunch period. They'd arranged to meet at the flag pole on the first day so that they could scout out a good place to eat, check out the food vendors and catch each other up on the morning gossip.

Mia was waiting for her, right on time as expected. She looked cute and stylish in a way that Letty never bothered with. Maybe she would have if she looked like Mia. But probably not.

"Hey," her friend said, shooting her a grin. "I tried to find out from Dom where they eat lunch but apparently he and Vince eat off campus." She pulled a face. That was a perk only offered to senior students and as he was three years older, Dom and his best friend Vince were seniors now.

Letty could admit a mixture of regret and relief to that information. She had always thought Dominic Toretto was - as the girls would say, cute. She was pretty sure half of that was because he was good with cars. And though he'd always been polite to her she was pretty sure he had no idea who she was, aside from his kid-sister's friend.

Mia wrinkled her nose at her, as if she read her thoughts. Mia always seemed to know about, if not understand, Letty's crush on Dom. But she had advised her friend to stay away from her brother. He had a bit of a reputation for breaking girl's hearts. Plus, Mia said the only girls he ever hung around with were nothing more than racer sluts. "One and done," she said, the implication being that there was only one thing a boy going after that kind of girl was interested in.

The girls scoped out a spot in the grass not far from the track under the shade from one of the buildings. They settled down together, unwrapping their lunches.

"So who all is in your classes?" Mia asked.

"Hector is in my math class," Letty said. "He's not going to be any help. He already got left back a year."

Mia laughed. "I can still help you with your homework. Even if we aren't in the same classes."

"Right cause you're all smart and shit," Letty teased.

"I guess someone has to be," Mia mused. "My brother definitely isn't going to college." She chewed on her sandwich. "Besides, I want to be a doctor."

"Seems like that's probably hard," Letty said. But she was sure if anyone could do it, it would be Mia.

Mia smiled at her, then looked up at a sharp whistle in the distance.

"Oh look it's Dom and Vince," she said, waving.

Letty tried to look nonchalant in her study of her sandwich as they approached. But she looked up at the smell of salty fries.

"Hey," Vince said. "We brought you some McD's for your first day of school," he told Mia, passing over a bag.

"Wow really?" Mia looked surprised.

Dom rolled his eyes at her. "It was Vince's idea." But he smiled. Letty tried not to stare at him.

Vince smiled too, a bit shyly and Letty wondered for a minute if maybe he had a crush too.. on Mia.

"You guys wanna sit with us?" Mia offered.

"Wish we could," Vince sighed. "But we have first period lunch so we just got back. Class beckons."

"Can't ditch on the first day," Dom told him with a laugh, then smiled again. "See you after last period," he told the girls.

He would be giving them a ride home at the end of the day. Mia nodded and they both murmured a thanks as the boys walked away back towards the school buildings.

"Wow that was so nice," Mia said, reaching into the bag and pulling out a wrapped burger. She passed one to Letty then grabbed one for herself.

"Do you like having a brother?" Letty asked as she unwrapped her burger.

Mia looked over at her. "Yeah I mean… I know I complain and sometimes we fight but he really is a great brother."

"Yeah…" Letty said.

Mia rolled her eyes. "But he'd probably be a terrible boyfriend!" She said, then seemed to reconsider. "But if you guys got married we could be sisters."

Letty almost choked on her burger. "Whoa Mi slow down… he doesn't even know my name."

"Well…" Mia looked at her, biting her lip as if she was going to say something, then shook her head.

"What?" Letty asked.

"You kind of dress like a boy…" Mia said.

"So?"

"I mean he's a guy. Guys notice things like… boobs and butts and legs. You cover your whole body up."

Letty frowned at her friend. "I'm not going to dress like a racer slut."

Mia held up her hands. "I'm not saying you should. I think you should dress how you want."

Letty knew her friend meant it. But the small kernel had been planted. She frowned as she ate her burger and fries and tried not to think about the kind of girl that Dominic Toretto noticed.
