Author's Note: Hey guys. Thanks again for all the follows and favorites. Every little thing keeps me going. I'm posting two chapters tonight because I will be out of town next week so I hope this gets you through!
Dom and Letty are official. Night at the races.
Chapter 14
Letty and Dom had been going out for a few months before he asked her to make it official. She knew a big part of it was that he was a little possessive, and since she tended to be around other guys all the time - at the garage, at school and at the races, he wanted everyone to know she was his and hands off.
The idea made her roll her eyes a little bit, but when he said she could chase other girls away from him too she was plenty satisfied with the deal.
It was a Saturday night and a race had been organized down in the industrial area. The meet up place was an abandoned factory with a huge lot. It was well off the beaten path so it wasn't likely any neighbors would call about all the cars and there wouldn't be a lot of traffic to block off for the races.
Letty couldn't wait until she could race herself, but in the meantime she was riding shotgun with Dom in his current car and Mia in the back. Vince was planning to race tonight and since Dom would crush him he usually sat out when his friend drove.
"I hope Vince actually wins today," Mia said as they approached the meet up spot. "He's always such an ass when he loses."
"You mean he's always such an ass, period," Letty corrected.
"You know how it is," Dom said, turning into the lot where someone had cut down a section of fencing years back. "Whenever I don't drive they all seem to come out of the woodwork."
"That's because people like to win, Dom," Mia said. "You make it too hard."
He chuckled and pulled up alongside a little black Japanese number that Hector had been driving around lately. Plenty of drivers in the LA area seemed to prefer asian-made cars these days and Letty knew they were definitely good driving. But she had a fondness for the classics too.
Vince pulled up on their other side just as they were getting out of their cars. People flocked around, as they always seemed to do when Dom arrived. He greeted a couple of them, then slung his arm around Letty's shoulders as Hector strolled up.
"Who's driving today?" Dom asked.
"I got a couple guys interested in taking on your homie," Hector said, scratching his head as he looked at the two of them.
Letty didn't miss the jealous looks some of the girls were giving her but she ignored them. Most of these girls were here only to be decoration for the guys or the cars. They liked to pose for pictures and wear the sexy clothes, but few of them actually drove and she was more than certain a lot of them couldn't fight. One dirty look was enough to have them scurrying off to find an easier target.
"Who are they?" Dom asked.
"Teeny from Romeo's gang bought in," he said. "And this white boy over there running the suped up Mazda." He pointed and they all looked over.
"He's pretty cute," Mia said and Letty rolled her eyes.
"You have such a thing for boys with blue eyes," she teased.
"They just have better manners," Mia said, rolling her eyes at Vince behind her picking wax out of his ear.
"Dunno about that," Letty said. "Pretty sure they're all the same."
"Hey," Dom said, dropping his hand to squeeze her ass.
"See what I mean?"
Mia laughed and then made a face. "I'm gonna go talk to him," she said and wandered over to the boy and his Mazda.
Vince looked a bit like a kicked puppy.
"It's never gonna happen, man," Letty told him. "There's tons of girls here to pick from."
Vince looked at her. "Hey, I've sampled a pretty good amount of them. But I don't want to date any of them."
"And that's exactly why Mia will never date you," she said, wrinkling her nose.
"That's not the only reason," Dom muttered. He loved his friend but he definitely didn't want him dating his little sister.
They wandered around for a little bit, checking out some of the new cars people were running, under the hoods of some, at engines people were showing off. They talked shop, swapped part recommendations with some people and got some of the local gossip.
More than a few people outright asked if they were an item now. Letty wouldn't admit it, but she liked when Dom put his arm around her and said she was his girl. And no one gave him any shit about it, teasing or otherwise. Dom was respected around here, and by now they all knew not to mess with Letty either.
Once Teeny arrived - a very tall black guy who drove an Audi he claimed he won playing poker against a well-known dealer in south LA - Hector collected the buy-in and they all drove over to a nearby strip of roadway where they could set up the race.
"Do you think Vince stands a chance?" Letty asked Dom when they were back in the car again. Mia had elected to ride over to the starting line with Mr. Blue Eyes, aka Josh. She'd meet them there.
"Dunno. Teeny's a good driver and that Audi has a lot of power," Dom said. "Vince is a hothead too. He never waits on the nitrous."
They pulled up along the road where they would be holding the race. There was no one around at this time of night, and though the cops in LA loved to bust street racers, in a city this big there was usually something bigger going on.
Still, the racers idled at the starting lane until someone on the police scanners heard a big call usually. It was the safest way. The races were fast and then over. They didn't hang around. No one wanted to spend a night in jail.
Dom went over to give Vince a pep talk and a few pointers while Mia and Letty staked out a spot in front of Dom's car at the starting line. "You have a nice chat with Mr. Blue Eyes?" Letty asked her friend.
"He's nice," Mia agreed. "He's from San Diego. Apparently their racing scene isn't as good as LA's."
"Whose is?" Letty wondered. "You get a date?"
"I invited him to the party at Hector's after."
"The boys are gonna love that," Letty said. "Let's hope he doesn't win."
"Then Vince can stay home like the sore loser he is," Mia said. "He's always scaring away any guys I'm interested in."
"Him or Dom?"
"Both of them," Mia amended. "Hypocrites."
Dom came back over to join them. "Race is about to start," he told them as Hector motioned one of his girlfriends to wave the starting flag.
Watching Vince race was always a lot more tense than watching Dom race. When Dom raced they always went in assuming he was going to win. He usually did. When Vince raced there was no telling. They cheered for their friend out of loyalty, even Mia. Pretty Blue Eyes was definitely the worst driver of the three, but it was no surprise if he wasn't used to the scene here. It wouldn't be shocking if he was a bundle of nerves.
Things were tight between Vince and Teeny, nose to nose all the way down the straight. There were some racers at the finish line to record the ending and call back the winner. They all waited for the announcement.
"Photo finish!" Hector called over his loudspeaker and everyone groaned. Several unbiased racers gathered around to watch the video on his phone as the three cars turned around and drove back at a more sedate pace.
"Vince wins by one second!" Hector announced.
"Holy shit," Letty said. "He didn't even use his nitrous."
"He's been practicing like crazy," Dom admitted. "Still can't beat me though."
She gave him a look and shook her head. "You're so humble."
"Isn't that what you like about me?" he grinned at her, then nudged her when Vince pulled up. They all hurried over to congratulate him on his victory.
He was thrilled. Until he found out who Mia invited to the after party.
