A Whole Lot of Smiles
"So I told Gabby I'd grab dinner when we wrapped and meet her and Grace for dessert. When I got there, your niece had ordered that kitchen sink thing, and they'd pretty much polished off ten scoops of ice cream," Danny told Steve with a grin, just as the partners turned to see someone walking their way across the dining area at the shrimp truck.
The young lady who approached the table looked to be a year or two older than Grace. She wore a blue sundress and her black chin-length hair swung as she walked. When she got close enough she smiled and said, "Detective Williams? I'm sure you don't remember me, but do you have a minute?"
Exchanging a look with Steve, he nodded, stood and answered, "I'm sorry, you look familiar, but…"
"It's been a long time." She extended a hand. "Lia Yamaya. I was ten, so I look a little different," she chuckled. Glancing at Steve she said, "Commander McGarrett, nice to meet you."
"Same here," Steve offered.
"Can we help you with something?" Danny asked.
"Actually, I was hoping to help you … or one of the charities you participate with, actually."
Danny motioned for her to sit and both men did the same.
"I met you before you joined the task force. When you arrested a dealer who lived in the upstairs apartment in our building in Wahiawa," Lia explained. "When he tried to get away …"
Danny's face showed recognition. "The bicycle. Lia Yamaya."
August 2010
"Hey, sweetheart, you did a terrific job," Danny knelt in front of the young girl whose eyes were rimmed red from tears. "That guy's going to jail for a long time and he won't ever bother you, okay?" He spoke softly and gave a reassuring nod to the child's father who was standing close by.
"Daddy told me he wouldn't be back, so I'm not afraid of him. I … it's nothing."
"Now, you know what? I have a daughter a little younger than you. Her name's Grace. She's eight."
"I'm ten." A little smile appeared.
"Look at that, I knew you were a little older than my daughter. Anyway, I can tell when Grace says it's nothing that sometimes it's definitely something. And I'm guessing right now … it's something."
"Her bike was ruined in the car chase. Raymond drove over it when he backed over the lawn," her father offered, pointing to the beyond repair bicycle at the edge of the apartment's driveway.
"My cousin gave it to me. It was hers." Lia turned sad eyes on the kind detective. "She's fifteen."
"Then you have an awesome cousin. I have a bunch of great cousins. They're back in New Jersey. I know how cool big cousins are." He took her hand. "You know what? I know a guy, so would it be okay if I take your bike and see if maybe he can fix it.?" Danny stood and moved to put the remains of the bicycle into the Camaro's trunk. "I'll stop back tomorrow either way. I think you deserve a reward for being so brave, anyway. How about I bring some donuts? You like donuts?"
Lia nodded. "I love donuts."
"Everyone likes donuts, right?" He shook hands with Mr. Yamaya and patted Lia's shoulder. "I'll see you tomorrow, and please, honey, don't cry."
Present
Lia nodded with a smile and turned to Steve. "That guy they arrested had driven over my bike. I'd just gotten it - a hand me down from my favorite cousin. I was devastated, and I knew my parents couldn't afford to replace it."
"But as upset as you were, you gave us a perfect description of his girlfriend. And we brought her in that night," Danny confirmed.
"And the next day, you showed up." She placed a hand on his arm. "With a dozen donuts. And a bike. I never forgot that, Detective Williams. You told me you had a little girl and you wouldn't want her sad if someone broke one of her favorite things." She smiled softly at the memory. "You also knew that was my transportation to and from school and that I had a local paper route."
Danny waved a hand, indicating it was his pleasure to replace the bike, but Lia shook her head as she said, "It meant a lot. To me and my parents."
Steve thought how his partner would have gone without in his early days on the island to pay for that bike. "Danny's always been in tune with kids," he said with a smile. "He's a great dad. And Uncle."
"I bet. He was wonderful to me and I want to pay it forward." Lia reached into her purse and took out an envelope. "After college, I got a job at Island Slipper, managing one of their distribution departments. I took up a collection there and in our factory and …" she handed over the envelope, "there's a check in here for almost five thousand dollars for Shop with a Cop. I see you and your daughter volunteering on the news reports every year and that's how I got the idea."
Danny blinked and looked from the check to Lia and back. "This is … wow… a very generous donation. The program can do a lot with this. I don't know how to thank you. I know your mom and dad must be very proud."
"Aww mahalo, they set a good example. When we moved out of the apartment it was because they'd worked extra jobs and relocated us to Makakilo," she noted the area that was one of the safest towns on the island. "I rode that new bike everywhere. I was so upset and sad after the first one was destroyed and you showed up and put a smile back on my face. It's still in use, by the way. My youngest cousin has it now."
"For the record, seeing your smile was the best part of that week." Danny told her sincerely, waving the envelope. "Thank you for this. If you and your parents are available, stop by Shop with a Cop, you can see your fundraising pay off first hand."
"We definitely will." She beamed.
He tucked the check in his pocket as she stood to leave. "You can meet some of the kids. And see a whole lot of smiles."
