Okay guys… I know I have other fics in the works that are desperate for updates and one that is getting updated (for a change) but I had a hankering to write a zombie story and what better universe to throw it into than OHSHC! !

This story starts in the third person POV for the first three chapters but shifts to first person POV's after that. (mostly Nanako's POV hehe)

Also, I am dedicating this fic to LumiOlivier because they are such a sweetheart and encouraged me to use this for my NaNo 2020 project!

So sit back, relax, grab yourself a drink and some snacks and get ready for…. Zombies! OHSHC Edition!

Chapter 1

The sun settled high in the sky on this unusually warm Monday afternoon in June and Nanako Yamada found herself noticing the oddest of things. All morning it had been plaguing her but finally she realised something… the school didn't seem as busy as it usually was. In homeroom there had been five absences this morning and then, during second period another two kids had gone and by lunchtime nearly a third of her class were out sick. Was there some kind of bug going around?

Currently, Nanako was in fifth period, although she wasn't paying the slightest bit of attention. She was staring out of the window, watching the trees rustle and sway in the light breeze, distracted enough that she didn't hear the teacher calling on her for the answer to the math problem on the board until he was standing right in front of her desk.

"Yamada… earth to Yamada…"

"Huh?" she blinked and turned to see the worried face of her teacher Shiota-sensei "oh… sorry Sensei…"

"Don't tell me you are getting sick too Yamada" he sighed a little at the idea of another student falling ill.

"Oh… no I'm fine Sensei, I was a little distracted" she chewed her lip, her face a soft shade of pink from her embarrassment.

"Well as long as you are sure I don't need to send you to the nurse…" he turned and walked back to the front of the classroom, ignoring the giggles of several students at the whole thing.

"Please come up and solve the equation Yamada" he nodded.

"Yes Sensei"

Nanako rose from her seat and walked down to the front, passing by Haruhi's desk, who smiled at her in that comforting way Haruhi had. The twins however were snickering between themselves, though they quietened down when Nanako reached the front.

The equation was child's play to her and with a light sound of triumph; she took up the pen and wrote her answer, being sure to show her workings out, even if she did solve it in her head.

"There…" she smiled and stepped back, letting Shiota-sensei check it.

"Very good Yamada, you can return to your seat" he smiled.

Nanako retreated back to her desk and sat down with a soft sigh. Maybe she was just imagining things but it did seem like a lot of students had gotten sick over the weekend.

Once school was out for the day, Nanako headed straight for music room three, the home to the Host Club and her place as Host Club Maid. Now, that might seem awful to some people, they imagine a maid does all the cleaning and menial tasks but Nanako's job was merely to move around the room, making sure people had tea and cake and anything else they might need while they were either with a host or waiting to see one. It was an easy enough job and sometimes they asked her to play piano for them if it was a special event or if there was enough of a request for soft piano playing.

When she opened the doors to music room three, she was surprised to find Honey and Mori already there. Usually they had kendo before club so they were almost always later than everyone else.

"Hi Honey-senpai, hi Mori-senpai" she smiled "I thought you had kendo today?"

"Mhmm but Kazama-sensei got sick and had to go home" Honey spoke up "so kendo was cancelled"

"Makes sense I suppose" Nanako nodded as she headed towards the changing rooms to grab her apron and gloves.

There wasn't a strict uniform for her to wear on a regular basis but an apron and a pair of white cotton gloves were pretty much expected. On special events she'd don a real maids outfit, complete with the little headpiece and frills. Nanako slid on her gloves and tied her apron before moving to check herself in the mirror. A little hair tuck here, a little fabric sweep there and she was ready to go out there and do her duty to the club!

"Tamaki, we should expect club to be a little less busy today thanks to the amount of students out sick" Nanako heard Kyoya talking to Tamaki as she came back out from the changing rooms.

"I know Kyoya… but isn't it sad? So many princesses under the weather at the same time! Maybe I'll send them all cards to help them get better quicker!"

Ah. Typical Tamaki, thinking a get well card from him would speed up the recovery time for those girls… then again, he might have a point. It was surprising how many girls walked into that club feeling under the weather or unlike themselves… yet when they sat with Tamaki for only a few minutes they were back to their perky bubbly selves.

"I don't quite think it works like that… but if it suits you, I can gather a list of all the girls who were absent or who got sent home so you can do just that" Kyoya shook his head as Tamaki waltzed off to find Haruhi.

"Hey Kyoya-senpai… does Tamaki-senpai really believe he can cure the sick with just a simple card?" Nanako asked as she walked over.

"You know what Tamaki is like… I know you have only been part of this club since the school year started in April but I think almost three months is long enough to know that Tamaki thinks he can cure anything with a charming smile" Kyoya chuckled softly.

"Mmm that's true" she sighed softly and shook her head "so, shall I get the trolleys ready?"

"Yes, I think so… though like I told Tamaki, prepare for lower numbers today" and just like that Kyoya was absorbed in whatever he was writing in that little black book of his.

Of course Kyoya had a point, she might have known of Tamaki in junior high but it was only this year that she had started to truly know the enigma known as Tamaki Suoh… and sometimes it was terrifying how naïve he was. Really it was the same with all of them aside from Haruhi, who she'd only met this year. The twins were sometimes downright creepy, Kyoya was truly the shadow king; it was unnerving and Honey and Mori were actually quite laid back… well Mori was, Honey was a sugar demon and goodness don't ever wake him up!

Club was slower than usual but not quite as bad as she'd expected, though she did find herself getting distracted several times, enough for the twins to pick up on it, giving them opportunity to use it to their advantage.

"Oh Nanako… please tell me you aren't getting sick…" Hikaru slid up next to her, tilting her head up to look at him.

"I… I'm fine… just a little distracted today… it's been an odd sort of day" She blinked a little, feeling Kaoru slide up on her other side.

"We can't have you getting sick Nanako…" he murmured, stroking her cheek. "Maybe you should sit down and take a break…"

"I'm fine… will you two get off me?" she wiggled her way out from between them, not oblivious to the squeals and swoons popping up around her from that little display.

"Are you sure?" Hikaru asked with an innocent tone to his voice

"I am sure… I'm just a little distracted today… what with how many people are out sick after Friday's field trip… wait…" Nanako blinked and dashed over to Kyoya.

"Kyoya-senpai, I think I know why so many people are out sick today" she panted softly as she came to a halt at his table.

"Oh? Do tell…" he seemed genuinely interested, so Nanako elaborated.

"Okay… so Friday was the field trip right? And we were split into groups and sent off to different places and we were all lucky that the Host Club ended up grouped up for the news station?"

Kyoya nodded, waiting for her to get to the point.

"Well some groups went off to the hospital owned by your family and some ended up going to the police station… and-"

"Get to the point before you lose it Nanako" he interjected

"Right right… sorry… so there were a couple groups that got sent off to that laboratory where they test top secret stuff right? Well I just realised that a lot of the people that went on that trip are the ones out sick today… I mean even Kazama-sensei is out sick and he was one of the teachers who chaperoned those groups" Nanako kept her voice low as she explained. She couldn't help but realise that Kyoya was staring at her quite intently now.

"How sure are you about this?" he asked quietly, taking her arm and tugging her through to the changing rooms.

"Really sure Kyoya-senpai" Nanako kept her voice low even once they were truly alone. "Kazama-sensei, Santoro-sensei, Ryuzaki-sensei, Dojima-sensei, Suzuki-sensei and Matsumoto-sensei were the chaperones and all of them are out sick today, we had study hall for English and Japanese today and I heard some girls talking about how they had study hall for some of their other classes too"

Kyoya looked thoughtful, adjusting his glasses "I see…"

"I don't think it's a coincidence Kyoya-senpai, really I don't… I wouldn't have thought so much into it if all the teachers that went to the lab weren't all out sick… and besides, I am sure with your skills you can access the student records and find out who went where for the field trip and who's out sick… right?" Nakano was stroking his ego a little there.

"I can do that… yes… good idea… okay, get back out there and act like everything is fine, I'll look up the lists and we can discuss this after club" Kyoya nodded before they both went back out onto the floor.

Once club was over and all the guests had cleared out, Nanako made her way over to Kyoya's table and took a seat.

"So?" she asked "did you find anything?"

On one hand, Nanako was hoping that she was wrong, that it was some weird coincidence and not something that could have the potential to be a disaster. She'd been watching way too many horror movies lately and she had to wonder if that was influencing her thinking and leaving her unable to have a rational thought about it all.

"Well…" Kyoya sighed, adjusting his glasses "I ran a check on all the absent students and compiled a list, and then I ran that list against the list of students who went to the laboratory on the field trip"

"and?" Nanako asked, crossing her fingers under the table.

"You were right" he watched her for a moment to see what kind of reaction she'd have.

"I was right?" she blinked "no no… you can't be serious…"

"I am serious Nanako… almost every single student that went there either didn't show up to school today, or ended up being sent home over the course of the day" he turned his laptop to show her the side by side comparison.

"Wow… I mean… how is this even a thing? Why hasn't the school said anything?" her eyes travelled over the lists as she took in the evidence.

"Probably because the school doesn't know about it themselves, although I wonder how they could overlook something as obvious as this" he leaned back in his seat.

"Well no offence Kyoya-senpai but you overlooked it until I pointed it out to you" Nanako shrugged, looking up at her upperclassman.

Kyoya stayed silent for a moment, letting it sink in before responding "you have a point but the school has access to these records when they log the absences so you'd think that someone would have seen the pattern by now"

"You have a point…" Nanako leaned back in her own seat "now what? I mean, what do we do now? Do we share our concerns with the student council president? Do we share them with the chairman? Surely Tamaki has some sway on talking to his father?"

"We could share our suspicions, though we can't show them our evidence or else they'd know I hacked into the school system and quite honestly I'd rather not be expelled" Kyoya reached and closed his laptop.

He had a point. If they showed anyone the data he'd compiled, he'd end up getting expelled for hacking into the system to use confidential student records for his own devices and it would derail his entire life plan… because let's face it, what university would want to accept someone who got expelled from the prestigious Ouran Academy? Especially when that someone was going to be joining the medical field where confidentiality is everything?

"Okay… then we should go talk to the Chairman" Nanako had made her mind up.

After saying goodbye to the other members of the Host Club, Nanako and Kyoya made their way through the school to the chairman's office, where they hoped he would still be even though school had finished hours ago. To their surprise, he was in fact still in his office, although he was about to leave for the day.

"Chairman Suoh" both Nanako and Kyoya bowed lightly.

"Ahh! Ootori and Yamada… what do I owe this pleasure? I was just about to leave for the day" Chairman Suoh had a kind smile on his face as he ushered the two teens into his office, closing the door behind them.

"Well Chairman sir… it's about all the students that are out sick today" Nanako spoke up as Chairman Suoh motioned for them both to sit.

"Oh? And what would that be?" he took his seat behind the desk and watched them carefully.

"Well you see sir" Kyoya spoke up "quite a few of our regular attendees were absent today and of course, Kazama-sensei too was sent home, so there was no kendo club and we were worried"

"So" Nanako slid in "I did some asking around… and apparently there were six members of staff either absent or sent home and the regular attendees were part of the group that visited the laboratory on Friday's field trip…"

"I see…" Chairman Suoh turned his attention to his computer screen and began typing on the keyboard. "How did you find this out? I hope you weren't snooping in the student records…"

"No of course not sir" Nanako answered, though she could see that tiny playful smirk upon Chairman Suoh's lips that suggested he knew they sometimes helped themselves to the confidential information on the student body.

However, something that Chairman Suoh saw on his computer screen had him frown, an expression of worry flittered over his features.

"We simply put two and two together" Kyoya was so cool, calm and collected right now and it was kind of making Nanako nervous.

"Well… thank you for bringing this to my attention, you have been very helpful" and Chairman Suoh was back to his charming smiling self "but school is out and club hours are over, so you two should be making your way home"

"Of course Chairman… thank you for seeing us" they both bowed lightly before leaving the office.

"Was it me, or did Chairman Suoh look real worried for a moment there?" Nanako asked as they walked towards the parking lot.

"Yes… something he read on the computer certainly had him falter for a moment" Kyoya mumbled curiously.

"Well… we told the Chairman what we thought so I guess we just wait and see if anything is said about it" Nanako adjusted her bag on her shoulder, smiling across to Kyoya.

"Yes… maybe it was all something about nothing" Kyoya mused as they reached the parking lot where their rides were waiting.

"Okay well I'll see you tomorrow Kyoya-senpai" she grinned before climbing into the car.

"See you tomorrow Nanako" Kyoya dipped out of view as he climbed into his car too.

As they pulled away from the school, Nanako sighed. Was this really something about nothing? A weird gut feeling was telling her that there was more to this than met the eye and she had an odd feeling that they'd find out sooner rather than later.
