Chapter 2
The next morning when Nanako arrived at school, there were notices up everywhere about a morning assembly but there was no indication as to what the assembly was about. Nanako had her suspicions and when the first bell rang for homeroom, she made her way to the auditorium instead and lined up with her class.
"Hey Haruhi… what do you think the assembly is about?" she asked as students filed in and took their places with their classes.
"Not a clue Nanako but it must be important if they cancelled homeroom for it" she responded, her brows furrowed in thought.
It wasn't long before the twins arrived but they weren't their usual chirpy selves, instead they slunk in behind Nanako and Haruhi with solemn looks on their faces.
"Are you two okay?" Nanako asked quietly
"Yea… but somebody decided to kick me out of bed and steal the covers" Hikaru muttered
"Oh? Just like how someone decided to steal all the space?" Kaoru grumbled.
"Oh and here I was thinking something was actually wrong" Nanako rolled her eyes "you two are a pair of drama queens"
"We are not!" they gasped in that creepy unity they had.
"Guys… shhh… don't cause a scene, I think assembly is about to start" Haruhi eyed the twins who fell quiet and just glared ahead.
Once all the students were gathered and had simmered down, Chairman Suoh stepped onto the stage; his large stride carried him quickly to the podium where he adjusted the microphone, giving it a little tap before speaking.
"Good morning students of Ouran Academy… thank you for joining me for this impromptu assembly" he adjusted his tie as his eyes scanned the room.
Something about the way he stood, the way he eyed the students gathered and the solemn looks on the teachers' faces had a chill roll down Nanako's spine. Something was wrong… really wrong and she had a feeling they weren't going to get told the whole story.
"It seems that on Friday, during the social studies field trip, a number of students were tasked with visiting the laboratory on the outskirts of town. Some of those students have taken ill over the last few days due to a gas leak on the premises, that unfortunately nobody was aware of until after the fact. Any students who visited the laboratory will need to report to the nurse's office after this assembly, where you will be checked over. I understand there are a few of you remaining in school as of this moment"
Gas leak? That sounded awfully fishy and Nanako couldn't help but shoot a look over to where Kyoya and Tamaki were, only to find Kyoya looking back. The look on his face suggested he thought the gas leak excuse was a whole load of phooey but neither of them were about to stand up and say otherwise. If it was indeed a gas leak then surely all the students that went to the lab would have gotten sick, though as of last night when they hacked the database there were only a handful of students still in school that had visited the laboratory.
"I can assure you that at this time there is nothing to worry about and I personally will send on our well wishes to those affected. As for today, there will be no set classes due to teacher absences so I encourage you to use today as a study hall and check in with your after school clubs. Nobody is to leave the grounds until the last bell of the day"
"I can't believe he's feeding us that rubbish about a gas leak" Nanako rolled her eyes as she flopped down on a couch in music room three.
"I know but it's something out there to keep the student body from freaking out" Kyoya was the voice of reason as always.
"Are you saying my father is lying?" Tamaki asked, taking a seat next to Nanako.
"I am saying… Chairman Suoh has either been fed some false information… or he knows more than he is letting on" Nanako gave Tamaki the side eye "what he told us was such a PR response to curb damage control"
"She has a point senpai" Haruhi joined them, sitting the other side of Tamaki.
"So what do we do for the rest of the day?" Hikaru asked, flopping down on the other couch, followed by Kaoru
"Well" Kyoya spoke up "we can spend first period here, then off to study hall for second, third and fourth and then back here for fifth and sixth for a club meeting"
"Sounds good to me!" Tamaki grinned as Mori and Honey finally joined us.
"Hey guys! Apparently Kazama-sensei got rushed to hospital!" Honey scurried over and squeezed in next to Nanako.
"Where did you hear that Honey-senpai?" Tamaki asked, tilting his head.
"Heard some teachers talking about it as we passed them to come here, right Takashi?"
"Mmm" Mori made a sound of agreement, followed by a short nod.
"Wow… I guess that gas leak is a little more serious than the Chairman is letting on" Nanako eyed Kyoya, who nodded in reply.
Fifth period couldn't have come sooner! Nanako scurried along to music room three, passing by a group of students who were talking in hushed tones about how apparently the laboratory where the gas leak happened was on some kind of lockdown and weren't letting anyone out or in the facility. Kyoya would probably know more about this and Nanako was going to poke him for information!
Entering the music room, she made a beeline straight for Kyoya, determination on her face, enough that he visibly twitched from the intensity of her stare.
"Kyoya-senpai… I just heard something interesting" she stopped at his table and stared him down "apparently the laboratory is in some kind of lockdown? Maybe you have more information on that… I know you are a goldmine for that kind if info"
"Funny you should bring that up… I do have more information but I wanted to wait for the others to arrive" he put on that charming host smile and instantly Nanako deflated and took a seat with a nod.
"Alright, makes sense… sorry if I seemed really intense just then… I've been hearing rumours all day about different things" she chewed her lip nervously.
"Me too Nanako but that is what they are, just rumours"
Once everyone had arrived, Kyoya settled down with his laptop and turned to face the group gathered.
"Okay so… there has been a rumour circulating all day about the laboratory going into lockdown. After much digging around, I can confirm this is true. Apparently a number of staff members have come down with a mysterious illness, much like those who visited for the field trip… however that is as much as I can gather. Their systems are shut down, I couldn't get anything"
"I thought you said you had more information?" Nanako narrowed her eyes
"Yes, well… I can confirm that Kazama-sensei is currently being treated in one of my family's' hospitals, along with six students that went on the field trip. They are unable to provide any medical care for them… all they can do is monitor them… They don't know what is causing the illness but it certainly wasn't some gas leak"
"I knew it!" Nanako jumped up before letting out a nervous laugh as all eyes gravitated towards her, sitting back down quickly "sorry…"
"Continuing on" Kyoya looked around at the group "club is still on after school and today was meant to be an event… so I'd like it if we could spend the remainder of this period and next setting up so we can open earlier today… give our guests something to enjoy"
"Splendid idea Kyoya!" Tamaki was fired up "we have to keep the princesses from worrying and what better idea than to open up early!"
Fifth and sixth period was spent arranging tables and changing the floor plan multiple times until Tamaki was happy with how it was all laid out. Nanako was ready to tear Tamaki a new one because he literally just floated around telling people what to do without lifting a finger… then again, Kyoya didn't do much lifting either! He was glued to his damned laptop!
Finally though everything was just perfect… the room set out like one of those Butler café's and all the guys and Haruhi were dressed in butler outfits with Nanako dressed in her usual maid getup. Slowly but surely guests began to arrive and it was business as usual… Well until a scream rang echoed in from the hallway.
Nanako almost dropped the teapot she was holding, eyes shooting towards the doorway where a second year girl appeared.
"In the courtyard… there's a girl in the courtyard attacking one of the teachers!" she managed before fainting in the doorway.
Mori moved quickly, scooping her up while everyone made a hasty exit to see what was going on. Nanako watched as Mori set the girl on the couch before moving with the others to see. Wiggling her way to the front of the sea of students, Nanako watched in horror as this girl leapt onto the teacher, taking him down with ease.
"What the hell?" she asked Hikaru who had pushed his way over to her.
"I have no idea…" his eyes were fixated on the girl as she scratched and bit at the teacher.
"Wait… isn't that Misa-chan?" one of the girls nearer to Nanako asked
"I think so… but she was out sick" her friend answered "she got sick from that field trip… Why would she be here?"
An announcement came over the school intercom system, creating a hush over those gathered.
"There has been an incident on school grounds between a staff member and a student. All students on campus are requested to contact their relevant guardians and make preparations to leave"
Nanako pushed her way through the crowd, grabbing Hikaru's hand and tugging him along. She had to find the others quickly, which was hard considering the small sea of students were moving too, some calling their drivers to come get them, others splitting off to go get their friends from other clubs and some who were just standing still in disbelief as other teachers entered the courtyard to try and intervene.
"Kyoya-senpai thank god…" Nanako breathed out "where are the others?"
"Everyone is in the club room" he motioned for Nanako and Hikaru to follow him back inside.
The girl that had fainted at the door was now conscious and on the phone to her driver and it sounded like he was on his way. She thanked Mori for helping her before gathering herself and making a quick exit. It didn't take long for everyone to contact their drivers and Tamaki offered Haruhi a ride home.
Walking down to the parking lot was tense. There were plenty of students also heading for the parking lot and Nanako had a really really bad feeling about it. Less than ten minutes ago a female student who should have been off sick was in the school grounds and she attacked a teacher, should they really be walking around out here when the girl hadn't been apprehended yet?
After about fifteen minutes, cars began to fill the parking lot and slowly but surely everyone was able to leave. After a few quick goodbyes, Nanako climbed into her car and sunk into the seat with a sigh… Finally, she could go home, do her homework and forget today ever happened.
