Chapter 4
It seemed like an eternity before the screaming and shouting stopped, when it reality it was more likely only an hour or so. Nanako had talked with Ritsu and the other members of the host club about how they could execute their plan to create a safe passage to the bathrooms and they'd finally come up with something that could work.
One group, lead by Ritsu, was going to leave and head to the room next to them on the left to start gathering furniture to create a barricade while a second group lead by Mori was going to go to the room on the right and gather furniture there. Once the appropriate furniture had been gathered, Ritsu's group would take a defensive position while the barricade was being built, while Mori's group would be split between defending and building.
"Everyone, can I have your attention" Kyoya spoke up, standing on one of the tables so that everyone could see him "We need to prepare to spend the night here and for us to be able to do that, we need to secure the bathroom facilities"
That seemed to have gotten everyone's attention. Forty pairs of eyes watched intently as he began to explain the plan.
"… And so, that is how we plan to secure a route. Any questions?" he asked, looking over the people gathered.
"Yeah" a third year stepped forward "you expect us all to risk our safety when the job could be done by a few people?"
"If everyone helps, it gets done quicker" Kyoya answered back "or would you rather risk running back and forth to the bathrooms without any protection at all and risk everyone's lives every time you need to go?"
The third year opened his mouth to say something but nodded and stepped back "I see your point…" he muttered.
Nanako's POV
With everyone on board with the plan, I watched as Ritsu's group left first, followed by Mori's group to go and gather furniture. The plan was that once they had gathered enough, someone would come knock three times upon the doors, a signal for everyone to come out and start putting together a barricade.
I looked over at Haruhi who seemed a little out of it, her phone in her hand and a worried look on her face.
"Hey Haruhi… what's wrong?" I asked, sitting down beside her on the couch.
"I can't get through to my dad… I tried the house phone, I tried his cell and I tried calling the bar he works at and I can't get through… I'm worried" she looked up from her phone and I could see the pain and worry in her eyes.
"Oh Haruhi…" I sighed, pulling her into a warm hug "I can't get hold of my parents either… I guess lots of people are trying to call out right now so the lines are busy… we can try again later okay? And besides, Ranka is a tough guy; he's probably found himself somewhere for him and his queen friends to hide out"
"Okay" she answered after a few minutes "you're right… Dad isn't stupid… he'd be able to fight his way to somewhere safe"
The way Haruhi smiled at me once the hug was over made me feel all fuzzy inside, though there was still that hint of worry in her eyes as she tucked her phone back into her blazer pocket. I couldn't help but feel a little sorry for her… I mean I have a reasonable relationship with my parents but Haruhi was really close to her dad, so for her to not be able to get hold of him during a crisis like this, it must be killing her inside.
The other members of the host club had been split between the two groups currently out there, aside from Kyoya who was on damage control in here. I could see him talking to a small group of students who looked like they wanted out.
"Looks like trouble…" I muttered quietly to Haruhi before approaching the group.
"Is everything okay?" I asked, looking between Kyoya and the group he was talking to.
"We want to leave" the taller boy spoke up "we are worried about our families and we want to get out of here but senpai here won't let us"
"Like I said before… you can do that once everything calms down, right now we have no idea what's going on outside the school, and we don't know how bad things are out there. I'd hate for you to risk your lives" Kyoya kept that calm and collected manner as he looked between me and the other student.
"Kyoya-senpai… we can't keep them here if they don't want to stay" I sighed softly "as much as I agree with you… if they want to leave, who are we to keep them here like prisoners?"
The look Kyoya was giving me… if looks could kill I'd be dead on the floor
"So you'd be happy letting them go to their potential deaths?" he asked like he couldn't believe what I was saying.
"Hear me out Kyoya… What is stopping them from leaving once everyone starts going to sleep later? Because I am telling you people will sneak out if we don't let them go willingly and you know what will happen then? The door won't get locked behind them and we'd all be in danger… If people want to leave we have to let them go… we aren't a dictatorship and as much as I understand that you want to keep people safe… we can't resort to imprisoning people" I put on my best puppy dog eyes that I learned from Tamaki, complete with a slightly pouty lip.
Closing his eyes, Kyoya exhaled heavily "Fine… fine. You're right, we can't hold people hostage… however" he turned to the group "all I ask is that you stay to help us with the barricade… if you don't find what you are looking for out there, you can come back here… okay?"
The boy brightened "thank you Senpai… really! We'll stay and help… right guys?" the group murmured their agreement "and we promise… we'll come back if we need to"
With that disaster cleared up, I took Kyoya to one side "So what now?"
"Well… now we wait, we build the barricade and then we give people the option to stay or go. Like you said, we can't keep people hostage here, it would only result in either a mutiny or someone putting every ones lives in danger" he adjusted his glasses "when people have decided, we'll then need to put together a group to go down to the dining hall and grab supplies so that we can eat tonight and tomorrow… hopefully we can get some information on what's going on out there"
"Then may I suggest allowing a group of us to go down to where the intercom announcements are broadcast from? I know for a fact they have a radio in there…" I started
"I have a laptop you know" Kyoya looked like he wanted to roll his eyes at me
"And that's fine Kyoya-senpai but the school wifi is down" I showed him my phone "no wifi, no data signal and barely any call signal… a radio would be a huge help"
It took him a minute or two but he finally conceded "fine… we can talk about that once the barricade is done"
Just as those words left his mouth, three loud knocks could be heard from the doors, almost making me jump out of my skin "holy…" I shuddered a little.
Kyoya approached the doors with me tailing behind him, followed by a couple of larger third years to back him up as he opened one of the large doors.
"We are ready" it was Ritsu… thank god.
"Great" I breathed a sigh of relief "everything okay out there Kasanoda?" I asked, wiggling past Kyoya to talk to him.
"Yea, everything is fine… its spooky quiet out here" he shrugged.
I ducked around him into the hallway and he was right… spooky quiet. There were the occasional textbooks and papers scattered about and blood splatters here and there but it seemed as if the area was now indeed empty. It did give me the shivers though; I mean stuff like this only happens in the movies… doesn't it? Stuff like this shouldn't happen in real life.
"Yamada?" Ritsu snapped me out of my train of thought "you going to come help?"
I blinked and looked around, noticing that people were on the move, stacking and sliding furniture in a bid to create a barricade for our safety.
"Y-yea… coming…" I shook free my thoughts and got to work helping the others.
Normal POV
It took a while but finally something solid was in place. The hallway was successfully barricaded with one exit so that people could get out running supplies.
Nanako flopped down on one of the couches, looking round to see Kyoya getting ready to address the group. As much as he didn't want to let people leave, he knew it was either let them go or wait for a riot. All she could do now was offer him an encouraging smile when he looked in her direction.
"Can I get everyone's attention" He called out and boy were people quick to listen "As I understand it… there are some of you who wish to go your separate ways to find friends and family. I would like to make it clear we aren't forcing you to stay here… as much as we'd like to have you stay and be safe, we understand you'd maybe like to go… so if anyone does want to leave, please feel free and know that you can come back here for as long as we are here"
Murmurs rolled through those gathered, whispers, snippets of this and that about 'how can we survive out there?' and 'well I want to leave' floating around.
"I'd like to thank each of you for helping secure this area for those who are staying… and for those who are leaving… I wish you the best of luck and I hope you find who and what you are looking for… thank you" he moved off to talk to Tamaki about something.
Over the next two hours people slowly began to leave in groups until there were maybe fifteen people left; Ritsu, Honey, Mori, Haruhi, Hikaru, Kaoru, Tamaki, Kyoya, Nanako, a third year boy, a second year and a third year girl and three members of the kendo team. Ritsu's friends had decided to head for the Kasanoda syndicate to give aid to the men there and to tell Kasanoda that his son was alive and helping aid civilians… as what is expected of the yakuza during troubling times.
"So, what do we do now?" Ritsu asked as the group sat around quietly.
"Firstly, I need out of this dress… I swear to god its bad enough I have to wear this pale yellow monstrosity during school hours… but to be stuck in it during the zombie invasion? No..." Nanako tugged at her dress in disdain before standing up.
With wonderful timing, Ritsu's nose exploded, his hands cupping his face.
"Really Ritsu? One mention of needing out of this dress and you get a nosebleed?" Nanako rolled her eyes, reaching into her bag for some tissues before stuffing them at Ritsu's face.
"Thanks…" he mumbled through the tissues "sorry…"
"Yeah yeah… forget it" Nanako waved it off as she headed for the changing room.
Nanako was a smart girl, she always kept spare clothes here in case of an impromptu after school excursion and after a little rooting around she found the suitcase she'd stowed here and dug through it, finding a pair of skinny jeans, a black spaghetti strap top and a hoodie, along with a pair of sneakers and hurried to get changed.
"Nanako-chan?" she heard one of the other girls calling from the doorway.
"Yea?" she peeked her head round the curtain "what's up uh…?"
"Izumi Toshio, second year…" the girl blushed
"What's up Izumi-senpai?" Nanako asked, tilting her head a little
"I just wondered… is there anything here that we can change into? Me and Naoko-senpai hate the uniform just as much as you do" she giggled softly.
"Uhh… give me two minutes Izumi-senpai and I'll dig something out" Nanako dipped back behind the curtain and finished getting dressed.
Stepping out a few minutes later, she slipped her dress onto a hanger with her name on and tucked it away with the cosplay costumes.
"Let's see…" Nanako mumbled, shuffling through the clothes hanging up in the massive closet area "I'm guessing you want like jeans or something right?"
"Yes please!" Izumi nodded "let me go get Naoko-senpai"
With that, Izumi was gone. Nanako sighed lightly and continued rifling through the various costumes and outfits stored here. Although this was the club room for the host club, it also housed all the costumes and outfits for school productions and festivals so there was a plethora of clothes here.
In no time at all, Izumi had returned with Naoko and the three of them began sorting through the clothing, dragging out anything that would be useful for them. All Nanako could think of was poor Haruhi and the fact that nobody knew she was a girl… though, there were plenty of guys clothes here too, it should be fine… she was sure the guys could rifle through the costumes and make themselves each an outfit.
Finally the two girls had found something suitable and had changed into their outfits of choice. Honestly, it wasn't something Nanako would have chosen but Izumi went for a pair of shorts, over the knee socks, a t-shirt and a jacket, all in light shades and Naoko went with surprisingly a skirt, leggings, shirt and jacket all in greys and greens. Both girls looked so colourful compared to Nanako who was in black.
Leaving the changing rooms, Nanako looked round at the others "I suggest you guys go root through the stuff back there and find something more comfortable to wear…"
Haruhi darted off before anyone else could move, returning a few minutes later in jeans, a baggy t-shirt, hoodie and sneakers.
"Wow… that was fast Haru-chan!" Honey giggled.
"Well Honey-senpai the uniform is uncomfortable" Haruhi shrugged with a small smile.
Eventually everyone had traded out part or all of their uniform with clothes from the racks and the tension in the room had definitely come down. All that was left to do now was to attempt a supply run.
