Chapter 20
Nanako was awoken a few hours later by Haruhi so that they could take this vote. It was safe to say the rest of the group felt the same as Nanako, Ranka, Ritsu and Haruhi did because when they were asked to vote, everyone voted to not let them in.
"I know it sounds harsh and cruel but they went about things so very wrong" Tamaki shrugged "they could have just asked for help instead of going about it like that"
"Somehow I think our decision time is up" Kyoya appeared in the doorway.
"What do you mean?" Nanako yawned a little
"There is a guy at the gates. He already spoke to me on the intercom. He's requesting to come in the first gate" Kyoya turned and headed back to the camera room.
Nanako rushed after him and sure enough, when she got to the camera room, there was indeed a guy standing out there. Reaching for the intercom, she pressed down the button and spoke.
"I understand you wish to speak with us?"
"Yes. I would appreciate it greatly if you'd open the first gate so we can talk safely"
Nanako looked around at the group before pressing the button again.
"We can talk like this, it's safer for us" she chewed her lip a little.
"Look… come down here and talk with me. I'd rather do this face to face than through an intercom"
"If you are here for our answer, I can give it to you right now… you tricked us into looking after a kid in the hope that she'd find out the codes to get in and out of the property. When that failed you are now asking for shelter? Do we look stupid?" Nanako paused "if we let you in, you're going to boot us out and claim this property as your safe base. Tell me I'm wrong?"
The man said nothing for a few moments and then…
"Fine. Be suspicious of us. We haven't done anything wrong… but we will be back to ask again… please think of our children… we have others aside from Chiharu who all deserve to be safe" the man turned and walked off.
"That didn't sound like a threat at all" Ritsu spoke sarcastically, rolling his eyes "I guess we get to wait and see how long before they come back again"
Nanako's POV
We didn't have long to wait.
You know how most gates have a function that when the power goes out, the gates can be manually opened? I didn't and apparently our gates had that function and I had no idea.
At around 3am the power went out. I'd already gotten everyone to pack up a bag each just in case the enemy decided to start a war with us for the property… and I was kind of glad we did.
I was awoken by the sounds of glass smashing downstairs and sounds of Honey and Mori shouting for everyone to wake up. My first instinct was to turn on the bedside lamp… but nothing.
"Fuck!" I growled, tumbling out of bed and throwing my clothes on, grabbing my emergency bag and throwing it across my body on my way out the door.
Running along the hallway, I was greeted by Ritsu and Ranka who looked a little worse for wear.
"What's going on?" Tamaki yawned as he joined us
"No idea… come on!" I ran down the hallway that was lit only by the light of my flashlight, coming to a stop at the top of the stairs. "ZOMBIES!"
"What?!" Ranka panicked, dragging Haruhi along.
"Zombies… fucking zombies!" I squeaked as I watched Mori and Honey fighting two, illuminated by the light of the moon.
"What the hell happened?" Ritsu charged past me, knife in hand, ready to get into the fight.
"Power went out" Honey yelled as he took down the first zombie "we didn't realise at first what was going on… and then we heard noises from outside!"
I heard a thud as Mori took down the second one.
I ran to the window at the end of the hall "We need to go… now! NOW!" I bellowed.
I had just seen the single most frightening thing since the start of all this. One zombie is pretty bad, three zombies is a ball ache… five zombies is a pain in the ass but a hoard? Yeah that was a nightmare.
"Go go go!" I yelled as we ran for all it was worth, down the stairs and out through the front door that Mori was holding open.
We'd packed some supplies into the back of the van the night before… I had a feeling they were going to resort to dirty tactics to get their hands on the house… but fuck… this was something else. How did they plan on taking over the house now when it would be full of that fucking hoard that was heading right for us? Or was that their plan? Let the hoard come destroy us, wait for it to move on and then take it over? Good fucking luck! They didn't have the codes for anything… they wouldn't be able to open or close the gates, they wouldn't be able to use the bunker… it would be a fucking shit show and you know what…. They deserved it! Maybe not Chiharu… but the rest of them? Yeah they deserved it.
"Me and Ritsu will go on the bike… rest of you get in!" I panted, stuffing a helmet on my head and hopping onto the back of the bike. "Head back for Ouran! We have radios so we can keep in contact!"
Ritsu hopped onto the bike and stuffed his helmet on. With one last look at the group, I gave them a wave and both vehicles were off. There was no way we'd be able to shut the gates, not with the amount of zombies already filling the driveway. I clung hard to Ritsu, squealing as we whipped past the undead and out onto the road.
We'd hoped never to have to return to the school but our situation was dire and with Renge running the show there, the school seemed our best bet. I couldn't help but yelp in shock at the hoard currently heading in our direction and even Ritsu stiffened before taking off in the wrong direction, I guess hoping to find a route around this issue.
We drove until sunrise, though we'd lost the others in the process so it was just me and Ritsu cruising along trying to avoid zombies that came too close to the bike.
"We need to find a car!" I yelled to Ritsu as we turned down another street. I had no idea where we were or even if we were going in the right direction anymore.
"I know! I'm looking!" he yelled back "SHIT!"
"What?! Why shit?!" I yelped, clinging harder round his waist
"Fuels almost out!"
You had to be fucking kidding me! Our fuel was almost out and all we could see were zombies all around us. And to make matters worse? Ritsu turned us down a side street, the bike spluttering to a stop. Climbing off the bike, he tossed his helmet off and began checking cars. I threw off my own helmet and climbed from the bike, checking cars on the other side.
"Come on… come onnn" I whined as each door was locked.
It looked like Ritsu wasn't having much luck either and I was about to give up when I heard a triumphant whoop from behind me.
"Get in!" Ritsu called as he scrambled into a small black car, tossing his bag into the back seat.
I squeaked and scurried over; throwing the two bags I'd been wearing across my body into the back seat, pulling the door closed behind me as I buckled in. Ritsu buckled himself in and turned the keys in the ignition, the car rumbled but didn't start.
"Shit…" he muttered, turning the key again but it was still not cooperating.
"Ritsu…" I squeaked as I saw zombies heading our way "hurry…"
Growling he thumped the dashboard before turning the key again. Third time worked a charm. The car roared to life and he peeled out of the parking space and out onto the road.
"Holy… fuck…" I gasped, sinking down into my seat as Ritsu took us along at a steady pace.
"Okay… I don't have a licence… but this is kinda like riding a bike… with four wheels… right?" he sounded half pissed off and half questioning as we drove along.
"Right… oh I hope so…" I ran a hand through my hair, turning to grab one of the bags and yank out a radio "I should try and get in contact with the others… where even are we?"
"Uhh…" Ritsu looked around for a sign or something and then "looks like we passed out of Tokyo a while back… I think we are in Shibukawa…"
Shibukawa… it sounded familiar…
"Wait… does that mean we aren't too far away from Karuizawa?" I sat up a little straighter.
"Yea… why?" Ritsu blinked.
"There's a pension in Karuizawa owned by a friend of Ranka's… ummm Misuzu? You remember Haruhi telling you about what happened during golden week?" I asked curiously.
"Yea… about how the club turned up and competed in a refreshing contest to score the last room…" Ritsu paused "Ohh okay that Misuzu..."
"Yeah exactly… I think… maybe we should go check on him… I mean Karuizawa is only a small mountain town after all and if we aren't that far away…?" I fluttered my lashes
"But why? We need to get back to the others… back to the school… why would you want to go there?" he huffed.
"Because if Haruhi or Ranka found out we had been this way and not checked on Misuzu… yeah I'll let you explain your way out of that one" I chuckled a little.
"Fine… fine… Karuizawa it is"
