I'm sorry for how late this is. I'm sorry for any mistakes I've made and failed to correct. I'm sorry it isn't a more interesting chapter.
Is anyone watching Preacher?! I'm SO in love with Cassidy. And Joe.
"Oi." The monotone voice of the probation worker sounded rather close. Turning, Elsie quickly realised just how close he was.
"What?" She snapped back rudely, taking a step backwards as she did, letting herself have more personal space.
"Where's your mate?" She knew instantly who he was talking about, but she wasn't about to let him know that.
"You'll have to be more specific than that I'm afraid." She dropped the brush onto the floor and crossed her arms over her chest. Her hands were stained from the graffiti, but she couldn't find it in herself to care.
"The male one."
"There are three of those here."
"The tall one."
"Compared to me, everyone is tall." It was obvious he was losing his patience.
"The runner!" It was his turn to snap at her now.
"Ohh. You mean Curtis?"
"Whatever. Where is he?"
"I've no idea." She grabbed the brush from the ground, dipped it into the murky water in her bucket and turned back to the wall.
"Don't give me that bollocks." But he sounded unsure.
"Why would I be lying to you? I genuinely don't know where he is! Why don't you go and annoy someone else?"
This time Elsie didn't need to turn around to know how close he had got to her. His breath moved the strands of hair that were framing her face as he spoke right next to her ear.
"Because it wouldn't be half as much fun sweetheart."
It took her a moment to swallow the words that wanted to spew out of her mouth, but with a deep breath she managed it. She paused for a moment as she wondered how long it had been since Curtis had left, and what he would be doing at that very second. For the last time that day, she let the brush fall from her hand, wiped her palms over her jumpsuit and turned, slowly, carefully so as not to touch the creep behind her.
"When are you arseholes going to learn? I'm NOT interested in any of you." She took a step to the side, feeling her face flush with anger that he was still doing this to her. "I've had enough for today. I'm going home."
With that, she quickly moved back into the Community Centre, hoping no one had seen her being cornered by that wanker. Hoping that he wasn't following her. Hoping his nonsense would stop.
She desperately wanted to be tucked up in bed, maybe watching a film with a beer or something. But first, she wanted the feeling of spray paint off her skin.
She had been at the sink for a while now, scrubbing her hands in order to get rid of the watery graffiti that had stained her flesh. She had managed to get some of the graffiti off the wall. But her short height only allowed her to reach so high. If the probation worker didn't like it, he could lump it, he'd had his chance to stop her.
Her skin had begun to hurt, she had been scrubbing for so long, lost in a world of her own, so it was rather a shock when a face appeared inches in front of her own. His cheeky grin frightened her so much she nearly screamed.
"You alright luv?"
"For God's sake, don't creep up on people like that!" She was fighting to control the beat of her racing heart as she turned the taps off and searched for something to dry her hands on.
"I called you a few times, but you didn't 'ear me."
"I was in a world of my own." Giving up on searching for a towel, she wiped her hands on the front of her jumpsuit. Something she instantly regretted when she felt the dampness soak through to her top slightly.
"Anyway, what you been up to?" Her eyebrows scrunched together in confusion. Why on earth would he care?
"Why?"
"Because I'm - because I'm trying to make conversation wit' yer. What's wrong wit' that?" She opened her mouth to apologise, but he hadn't finished. "If curiosity is illegal in this room, then arrest me right now, because I am guilty." He held his wrists together as if waiting for her to handcuff them together. He lowered his voice for his next words. "You, my luv, can do anythin' you like to me if you catch me drift." His sentence was accompanied by another eyebrow wiggle that made her want to giggle.
"I catch your drift." He made a sudden move towards he as if he thought she was agreeing to his flirtatious ideas, but she stopped him with a hand on his arm. "But that's not happening." Now she really did giggle when his smirk disappeared. "What are you up to anyway?"
"Oh, me, well I wanted to use toilet, but it's out of order. Or at least it were 'bout half an hour ago but I doubt anyone's come to fix it in that time eh?"
"Half an hour ago? Have you been holding it in?"
"Well, I came in to..."
"To what?"
"To use the..." He waved his hand around in the air as if that would help her.
"To use the what?"
"To use the sink. Jesus Elsie. What did you think that meant? I'm not a caveman!" He questioned with another wave of his hand.
"Sorry." She wasn't sorry. "Can't you use a bottle or something?"
"A. I don't have a bottle. And B. I thought using the sink would be a bit more civilised."
"Than a bottle?"
"Yes! Elsie! Christ!"
"So...you'd rather piss in the sink, where someone can walk past and see, than find a bottle and use it in private?"
He pretended to think. "Hmmm...YES Elsie. I can't find a friggin' bottle."
"I might have one in my bag."
"No offence luv, but I don't have time to wait for you to snoop around in that bag of yours."
"But you have time to stand there and annoy me? Hold on a minute. How long had you been standing there waiting for me to turn around?"
With his hands on his hips, he took the offensive. "I didn't come in 'ere to be questioned."
"No, you came in here to relieve your bladder. Answer my question and I'll leave you to it. How long?"
"'Bout ten minutes." He gave in quickly and mumbled under his breath.
"Why the hell didn't you snap me out of it sooner?"
"I dunno. You looked like you were thinking."
"I wouldn't have minded." She was now the one mumbling.
Rudy looked around to make sure they were the only ones around before leaning closer to her and whispering. "'The other one." He tapped his chest. "He didn't want to disturb yer. Thought you looked peaceful. Hadn't seen you like that before."
Elsie crossed her arms over her chest. "So you were watching me?"
"Not much else to watch really." He shrugged, not caring what she thought.
"Right, well, I'll just leave you to it then." She edged around him as he made his way to the sink. She turned to ask if he was headed to the bar later when she heard the distinct sound of liquid hitting the inside of the sink. Thinking better of opening her mouth she rushed from the room not wishing to see anything she shouldn't see. But she rushed out of the room too soon and bumped into the same guy she had bumped into that morning.
"Seems like you can't get enough of me today." He joked, holding onto her arms to steady her. She spat out a fake laugh and hoped the jumpsuit was zipped up all the way.
"Sorry. Bit more clumsy than usual. I'm finished here for the day anyway, so this is probably the last time it will happen." Hopefully, she added in her mind.
"Not to worry." He let go of her slowly, as if he was relishing the feel of her in his palms. "Well, it was nice to bump into you."
"You too." Oh god, please don't ask me my name.
"Hey, what's your -"
"I'm really sorry, I've got to head off to work." She started walking backwards. "It was nice meeting you." Even nicer leaving you. She winced when she realised they had already had that part of the conversation. "Have a good day."
With haste, she walked to the locker room, threw open her locker, grabbed her jeans and ran into a cubicle. Leaning her head against the locked door, she took a moment to calm her breathing, not to mention her erratic heartbeat. Her instinct had been screaming at her to run, something she found a little ironic as he was training a group of female runners. She could only hope he was not like that to every female in his company.
With her breathing still a little laboured, she slipped her jumpsuit off, pulled her jeans up her legs and exited, making sure the orange atrocity was safely locked in the locker, her bag secured on her shoulder.
So focused on getting out of the building that she did not notice the other person attempting to leave the building.
"For fucks sake."
"Oh my God. I am so sorry, I keep doing this today."
"Elsie?"
"Yeah?" It was only now that she bothered to look at the other person. "Oh hey man." She visibly relaxed when she realised it was Curtis, though still in his female form. Only in Wertham could that sentence make sense.
"Are you alright? You look a bit flushed."
"Oh yeah...just...you know...working hard." The female before her did not look convinced. "Can you just get me out of here please?" She mumbled as she lowered her gaze to the floor. She felt a little ashamed at herself for getting so worked up.
It was only when Curtis offered an arm to her, that she looked back at her, a look of understanding in her eyes. Gladly, Elsie linked her arm through her friends and together, at a brisk pace, they left the building, and the events of the day behind.
Now all they had to do was get through the events of that evening and she could finally go back to bed.
Let me know what you think?
