The Chemistry In Darkness
Chapter Ninety-One
Friday 25th July 2025 – 4 ½ months later – New Moon
Elly pressed her foot down on the accelerator, "I hate this car, we should've left the Island hours ago!"
Chloe swallowed hard as she felt herself bracing as the car sped up, "Maybe I should've driven us…slow down, babe, today is not the day for you to speed too much and not have your reflexes."
"I hate the New Moon. I miss my powers, I love you been human, Chlo, but I can't stand this day once a month of been human," Elly cried out.
"Do you remember the part where I suggested you slow the speed down?" Chloe grimaced her teeth, then looked at Aster sitting in her child's seat in the back seat of the car, whom had the same look on her face as Chloe.
Elly grunted as she slowed the car back to travelling to the maximum speed permitted on the road, "We'll be late."
"That's okay," Chloe reassured.
"We'll be late to my sister's wedding!" Elly added with exasperation, "I don't have my powers, I am absolutely going to trip down the aisle and fall flat on my face! You won't be able to help me! Neither will Aster! Why did Bea and Yashvi need to have their wedding today of all days out of the month? And on a Friday…I told them to have the wedding tomorrow…absolute cheapskates! First, Bea and Yashvi move into your old place to save on rent so they can save for their own place whilst you work out what to do with the place since Toadie got it signed over to you. Now, a wedding on a Friday!"
"The bride is always late, Elly…and there's two of them so even more chance to think the wedding won't start exactly on time. Stop worrying that you're going to trip down the aisle, you're not the clumsiest person around when it's the New Moon. Bea and Yashvi aren't cheapskates organizing their wedding on a Friday. They started dating today five years ago, this date was special to them. How many times do I have to tell you, I'm fine with Bea and Yashvi living at my house because I don't know what to do with the place?" Chloe reminded her girlfriend, before reassuring, "We'll get there, okay…? I should've driven…if I wasn't more than seven months pregnant…and I could fit properly in the driver's seat as the wheel to this car is far too close to the driver and my pregnant belly couldn't take it."
"We're literally relying on the brides been late so that we're not late to their wedding! Bea is gonna kill us!" Elly grumped, "And fine, they aren't cheapskates, they are very romantic to choose their five-year anniversary! There's nothing wrong with your beautiful pregnant body making you struggle to get behind the wheel."
"Bea's not going to notice, she'll be too busy trying not to cry walking down the aisle to her beloved," Chloe insisted, "Glad you see the romance in their decision to get married today…and thanks for trying to make me feel better about been huge."
"Have I mentioned that we're Bea's bridesmaids? We should've been there for her first thing this morning…yesterday, why didn't we come back from the Island yesterday so we could spend last night with Bea and Susan and Karl…instead of running late this morning so much so that we didn't even get off the Island until after lunchtime. We are the worst bridesmaids in the history of bridesmaids," Elly exclaimed.
Chloe side-eyed her girlfriend, "I'm the worst bridesmaid or have you forgotten what happened before your wedding to Mark? Compared to me, Bea will forgive our late-a-tude."
"What did you do before Mama married Mark, Chloe?" Aster asked excitedly.
Elly glanced at Chloe, smirking at her before clearing her throat, "Nothing to concern yourself with, baby girl. I just wish we'd gotten away on time this morning."
"So…now is probably not the best time to remind you…who made us late to getting off the Island?" Chloe giggled at Elly's annoyance of their inability to be on time for Bea and Yashvi's wedding.
"We're been followed on the Island, Chlo! I can feel it! I felt it this morning again and I needed to check it out. I'm tired of feeling like someone else is out there on the Island with us, Chlo," Elly confessed.
"We're not been followed, Elly. There is no one except for The Pack and us out on the Island. No one has felt what you have. They haven't smelt any humans or other werewolves near us either. Romulus is one of the best trackers in the world, he's scoured the entire Island for us...twice. Lexa and Clarke have done the same thing across most of the Island. There's no one else there," Chloe reassured.
"Then why do I feel like we're been followed?" Elly asked.
Chloe shrugged, "I honestly don't know. It can't be Pierce, can it? He's a wolf now, can he be the one hiding from us on the Island?"
Elly swallowed deeply, reminded of having to confess to her mate what she'd done to her husband by turning him into a werewolf, whom then disappeared without a trace when Chloe was in hospital, both of them none the wiser that Raven had actually eaten Pierce alive.
Elly was only glad that after her horrible confession, Chloe and her found some distraction in that the doctor had come to the hospital room to confirm the DNA and Huntington test proved once and for all the baby was most certainly Elly's and did not carry the Huntington's gene – their baby was healthy and they could plan a long happy life together with their children.
Elly assured Chloe, "It can't be Pierce. I trust Raven with my life so if she says he won't come back, then he won't. But it still doesn't explain why I feel like there's someone out on the Island with us that I haven't been able to find yet."
"We'll find 'em if there is someone, Elly, but you really shouldn't have gone off on your own trying to track whomever it might be this morning of all mornings. I was worried you weren't going to make it back in time," Chloe scolded the brunette gently.
"You're right, I should've asked Clarke and Lexa to go for another trip around the Island for us to see if they could track anything," Elly realized.
Chloe disagreed, "Ah, no you shouldn't have, Elly! Lexa, fine, send her on her way if you must but leave Clarke out of it. She doesn't need to be traipsing around the Island when she's…"
"Pregnant…right…I know…I keep forgetting," Elly shook her head at herself.
"Don't know why, the way those two go on about it…they're as bad as we are with our soon-to-be bundle of joy," Chloe snickered, "I like knowing I'm not the only pregnant one of The Pack. Clarke's only just three months pregnant but she's already way more excited than I am about everything to do with having a baby with Lexa."
"Of course Clarke and Lexa are both excited. They've secretly been hoping for a baby for as long as I can remember. They try to hide it behind their gruff exteriors but I've seen the way they are with Aster, they love her to bits and want that for themselves which they are gonna have. Just like us. We are all gonna be amazing parents and our babies are gonna grow up together," Elly said excitedly, "Oooh what if our child and theirs end up been wolfies and mates?"
Aster screwed up her face at the thought, "My baby sister or brother hasn't even been born yet and you already want...'em to meet their mate, Mama?"
Elly shrugged, "I just think it would be cool!" then glancing at Aster in the rear-view mirror, "Don't you worry, baby girl, I'll be just as excited for you when you fall in love! Be it the regular human falling in love or if you grow up to be a wolfie like me then the mate kind of love. Both are amazing and I can't wait for you to be as happy as Chloe and I are."
Aster only grumped in response.
"Did I say something wrong?" Elly whispered to Chloe, whom whispered back, "She's five, I don't think falling in love is her priority just yet."
Elly smiled at Chloe, "Good point."
"Eyes on the road," Chloe then screeched at Elly, finding herself clinging to the car door handle as Elly's lapsed concentration and non-werewolf powers sent them inches over their side of the road.
Elly swerved back into the lane, "I hate been human. I'm not used to it, sorry, Chlo. I'll get us to the wedding safely."
"I hope you do," Chloe attempted to smile through her gritted teeth, "Speaking of...not used to it...Bea is going to go through with this marriage, right?"
"What?" Elly almost screeched, "Of course, Bea is going through with the marriage! Why wouldn't she? Do you think she's still worried about how long it took Yashvi to come clean about her own supernatural self?"
"Still not over Yashvi and her parents been part of your world, aye?" Chloe sniggered.
"I'm not the one whose gotta get used to it! Bea does as she's marrying into their family of Mages and Druids…and she only found out a month ago. Yashvi kept it secret long enough until she realized that she had to tell Bea before they got married…and also Dipi was trying to hint to it strongly what with been the one who's going to marry them and make it a spiritual ceremony and when Bea was totally on board with that, Yashvi still took her time to tell Bea the truth," Elly griped.
"You took ages to tell me you were a werewolf," Chloe chimed back.
"It was less than a month and you and I hadn't been together for five years nor were we engaged to be married within weeks," Elly pointed out.
"True, but it doesn't really matter what we think. Bea is totally fine with Yashvi been supernatural," Chloe reminded Elly.
"Well, yeah, Bea was looking for a reason as to how it could be possible for you to be carrying my baby. Then finds out Yashvi's part of a supernatural world and that according to Dipi, she and Yashvi can have biologically related to them kids of their own, so of course Bea jumped on the bandwagon. I am happy for them y'know, I just wish Yashvi had come forward when she found out the truth months ago," Elly explained.
"You going to tell Bea you're a werewolf yet?" Chloe wondered, changing the subject.
"You mean when we turn up, ten minutes before Bea is due to walk down the aisle, rush to get dressed into our bridesmaids' dresses, drop that on her? Or maybe I should tell Bea as I'm walking down the aisle in front of her? Yes, Chlo, babe, I will tell her…just not on Bea's wedding day…we can wait until Bea and Yashvi get back from their honeymoon at least," Elly decided.
"Okay," Chloe agreed, then looking at her watch, "We are really going to be…"
Elly placed her foot down on the accelerator before Chloe finished her sentence, "We'll get there…me been human for the day will not stop us making this the happiest day of Bea's life. This day is going to be perfect!"
Several hours later, Elly's family had just made it in time for the wedding, Chloe was relieved her bridesmaid duties with Elly didn't need to involve needing to reassure Bea that marrying Yashvi was what she wanted as Bea didn't have any nerves at all, Elly had only tripped down the aisle in front of everyone once, Aster had been a gorgeous flower girl and the loving couple had been declared wife and wife by Dipi.
And now all the wedding goers were celebrating on the dance floor with the happily married couple.
Heavily pregnant Chloe was more than a little reluctant to get out on the dance floor with her girlfriend and Aster. She was more than happy to stand on the sidelines watching them instead, silently hoping Elly would only be distracted dancing with everyone for a couple songs and then they could sit back down together at the table. And enjoy watching Aster dancing with everyone together.
Bea and Yashvi found themselves dancing over towards Elly and Aster. Elly was surprised when Bea had her phone on her, gesturing for Elly and Aster to join them for a photo, then over to Susan to take it by handing their Aunt her phone.
"Oh my God, Bea, why do you have your phone on you for your wedding?" Elly scolded her younger sister.
"For moments like this, I want to take my own photos with our guests as we're celebrating. The photographer is taking the professional ones, I want personal ones too!" Bea insisted.
"Okay, okay," Elly agreed, holding Aster's hand and bringing her over to stand in front of Bea and herself, with Yashvi on Bea's other side, holding her around the waist.
Elly found herself finding Chloe from across the dance floor, smiling lovingly at her girlfriend, feeling even more in love with Chloe when she returned her gaze.
Susan snapped a photo of the group, then looking at it on the phone, asked Elly to look at the camera this time, with Elly reluctantly doing so. Susan took another photo then handed the phone to Bea. Bea pulled up both the photos, rolling her eyes at the look on Elly's face in the first one, knowing without even needing to ask that she was looking over at Chloe.
Bea smiled wickedly at Yashvi, "I look worse in the second photo so I don't even care that Elly's looking all lovey dovey at Chloe across the dance floor, I'm posting that one to Facebook now. Gotta have a good photo to go with my updated MARRIED status, babe."
Elly reluctantly pulled her gaze from Chloe once more to hug her sister, "I'm so proud of you, Bea."
Everyone needs their happily ever after like these two…
But when Elly's eyes looked back over to where Chloe was standing, Elly frowned as Chloe was nowhere to be found…
Next time - Oopsie, I found a loose thread I never tied up...can you guess what it is? Cause this loose thread means this angsty story is not finished yet!
