Chapter 4: More than she ever wanted
The door opened and Sara's smile is bright as she spoke again. "What's this?"
Her blue eyed man smirked as he walked into the room, carrying a tray that had a plate filled with pancakes and eggs. "This is what we call breakfast in bed, dear."
She pursed her lips before replying with a smile. "Ha, Ha, very funny, you know what I meant."
He gets to her side of the bed, sets the tray in place over her lap before he spoke after clearing his throat. "This is for your birthday, so happy birthday, honey."
Before he could speak again, she took her husband's hand and looked up at him with love in her eyes. "Thank you."
When she started to tear up a second later, he became concerned, so he cupped her cheek with his other hand. "What's wrong?"
She shook her head and sniffled. "It's just that I love you so much, you know that, right?"
He nodded with a smile as he ran his thumb up and down her cheek. "Of course I do, and you know how much I love you too, right?"
"I do."
"Where is this coming from then?"
She took a breath before telling him. "I was thinking about my past birthdays, and how I ended up here with you and..."
She was cut off when a voice of a little boy was heard from the bedroom doorway. "Mommy, I got your milk."
Both of their attention turned to the little boy as their minds took them to the best birthday surprise of their lives, even though they were a little freaked out at first.
Flashback
September 16, 2016
Paris, France
After reuniting on the docks in San Diego, Sara joined Grissom on his adventures and they sailed the oceans together, once again becoming that dynamic duo that they were for so long when they were CSIs. It also didn't take them long to correct a mistake that they made years earlier, they got remarried, both knowing and vowing that this time it will be different.
Days turned into months and eventually their travels lead them close to a city that meant something to them, and for awhile held some good memories, so with Sara's birthday coming up they decided to stick around for the week, and not only that, but she started to feel sick the last few days on the boat so they thought this time on dry land would settle her stomach.
However, after a few days in the city, the feeling got worse than when they got there, so she went to a doctor to get checked out, and when she got the results back, it was the last thing she ever thought would happen, especially at this point in their lives, which was why Grissom was looking at her like he had seen a ghost and hadn't talked for several minutes after she told him what was going on.
Another few minutes went by and he was still silent, causing Sara to get worried, so she cupped his cheek and asked. "Griss, are you ok? Do we need to get you to the hospital, are you having a heart attack?"
He cleared his throat and shook his head before he blinked a few times, then asked softly, like he still couldn't believe that word came out of her mouth. "A baby?"
She nodded with a small smile. "Yeah, a baby."
He cleared his throat again. "After all of this time?"
"Yes, after all of this time." She then sighed as she removed her hand from his cheek and stood up from the hotel bed, shaking her head and started speaking while she was pacing back and forth, throwing questions out in the open. "How can this happen now? Are we ready for this? Do we want to do this?" She looked at her husband, who still seemed shocked by this news. "Griss, are you sure you're ok?"
He cleared his throat one more time and nodded. "I'm sorry, honey. I've just been thrown a very unexpected loop here, I'm going to need another minute or two to process this."
She chuckled, then sighed as she goes and sits back down next to her husband again. "You and me both." She shook her head and continued. "I honestly never thought that this was going to be a step that we take."
Grissom tried to hide the hurt in his eyes as he asked. "Really?"
She immediately looked at him when she detected a little hurt in his tone, so she gave him a smile and took his hand. "Babe, believe me, it had nothing to do with you. This was always about my fear of becoming a mother, I never saw myself as one."
Before she could continue, he did with love in his eyes. "I did."
She looked at him with wide-eyes. "You did?" After he nodded with that beautiful smile and glow in his eyes, she asked. "So, did you ever think this could have been a step we took?" He paused then looked down, which she lifted his chin back up and cupped his cheek before speaking again. "Griss, we promised this time we would talk about everything, no holding back, no matter what, so please tell me?"
He nodded before continuing. "Maybe not at first, because when we first got together, I was just so thankful that we finally made that step. I didn't feel like I needed anything else because I had you and I was ok with that. Then when things started to settle for us, I thought about bringing the subject up, but then..."
She cuts him off. "The whole kidnapping happened and everything started to fall apart."
He nodded before continuing while running his thumb up and down her hand. "And when I found you in Costa Rica, I was just once again thankful that I got you back. Then when we ended up settling in Paris, I thought about bringing the subject up again..."
She once again cuts him off. "Before I thought it was a great idea to go back to Vegas, and we all know how that turned out."
He shook his head and squeezed her hand lightly. "I didn't mean to bring all of that up."
She gives him a smile and cups cheek. "I know, babe." She then sighed again. "Now, that we are 'calm' again, mother nature took it upon herself to bring up the subject. But there is a big difference now than there was the last two times."
He nodded. "Our ages." After Sara nodded, he commented. "I mean in society's eyes, I should be a grandpa at this point, not a father to a newborn."
She ran her thumb up and down his cheek as she spoke with love in her eyes. "First of all, we never really cared about what other people thought about us, so this would be no exception, and secondly, you would still be the sexiest father in the universe, no matter what age you are."
He gives her that smile that she loves as he asked. "Really?"
She smiled wider. "Oh yeah."
They took a moment to really let this sink in before he asked. "So, did we answer one of your questions, do we want to do this?" Before she spoke, he continued. "Because whatever you decide, I'm behind you 100%, we are in this together."
She gave him an appreciative smile as she ran her thumb up and down his cheek a few more times before she removed it, then she looked down at her stomach while moving her hand to it until it was placed against it before she spoke softly after a few moments of silence. "While I never thought this would become a step for us, I knew in my heart if it ever did, my choice was always going to be the same, no matter the circumstances. There was no way I was ever going to hurt anything that came from our love." She lifted her head up so she was looking at her husband with tears in her eyes. "I could never hurt you, hurt us, like that."
He cupped her cheek this time and ran his thumb up and down her cheek as he asked after clearing his throat to get the emotion out, but there was still some coming through. "Are you saying what I think you're saying?"
She slowly nodded. "Yeah, I guess I am. We are doing this, we are going to be parents."
The look on Grissom's face, like he just got everything he ever wanted in life, made Sara love him even more, and knew despite her doubts on becoming a mother, she knew her husband was going to be there every step of the way.
After sharing a passionate kiss, they pulled back and he placed his hand on top of hers that was still on her stomach, then she slipped her fingers through his as he spoke with tears in his eyes. "Thank you for everything. I love you, and I hope you know how much."
She nodded with tears in her eyes as well. "I do, and I love you too."
After another kiss, he asks. "So, how do you want to celebrate your birthday and this unexpected but wonderful news?"
As beautiful as the city was, there was only one thing Sara wanted, so she moved her hands to the buttons of his shirt and whispered. "How about room service later."
Getting what she meant, he spoke as he moved his lips towards her neck. "Your wish is my command."
End of Flashback
"Thank you, honey."
They watched their son, who was full blown Grissom 'mini me', carry the glass of milk with both hands, then when he got closer, Grissom took the glass from him and places it on the tray before picking him up so their little man could give his mother a kiss and a hug. "Happy Birthday, mommy."
"Thank you, sweetie. I love you."
"I love you too."
Grissom moved their son closer to him, and the little boy wrapped his arms around his father. "I love you too, daddy."
"I love you too, buddy."
Once the little boy was placed back on the floor, he ran out of the room, while his parents watched him until he was out of sight before they looked at one another with nothing but love and amazement. While having a child was never a solid plan for them from the start, they will admit without hesitation the moment Arthur came into their lives, they will always say he was the best thing that ever happened to them.
When she started to have tears in her eyes again, he cups her cheek again. "You're tearing up again."
She sniffled and shook her head. "I can't help it. I have everything I ever wanted and more, these last five years have been the best of my life."
He smirked. "Especially once you got use to being a mother."
She chuckled. "True." Then she smiled with her eyes sparkling. "But it's been the best experience and most rewarding that I ever had, and all the thanks should go to you."
He shook his head with a loving smile. "Dear, the last time I checked I wasn't alone in that, but you're very much welcome."
They leaned towards one another and kissed, then he pulled back and kissed her forehead, whispering against her skin. "Eat up before it gets cold."
He pulls back as she nods, then tells her their plans later tonight before he walked out of the room so she could finish her breakfast while he cleaned up the kitchen in their San Francisco apartment.
When Grissom came back into the room about 10 minutes later, she was just putting her phone back on the nightstand with a worried look on her face, so he asked. "Sara? What's wrong?"
She bit her lip before looking at her husband. "My presence was requested in Vegas."
Grissom raised an eyebrow. "Vegas? Again?" After she nodded, she looked down, remembering the last time she was asked to come to Vegas, but before she could speak again, he did as he walked up to her and sat on the side of the bed, lifting her chin up so they can have eye contact. "It's different this time, we go together, no matter what."
"But what about schooling for..."
He cuts her off with a smirk. "Hey, if it comes to it, I can still teach, remember?"
She pursed her lips with a nod before smiling. "Yes, I remember." She then cleared her throat and asked. "You sure?"
He ran his thumb up and down her cheek. "I'll follow you anywhere."
"Then I guess we are going back to Vegas."
He does a short nod of acceptance before they wrap their arms around one another, they didn't know how long this visit was going to be, but they knew no matter what they'll be together.
