Summary:
Did you ever see a farmhand holding Gordie's hand? Down by the bay!
Down by the bay,
Where the watermelons grow,
Back to my home,
I dare not go,
For if I do,
My mother will say:
Did you ever see a farmhand holding Gordie's hand?
Down by the bay!
Circhester Bay was frozen year-round. You couldn't grow crops, forget watermelons!
But not going home to a waffling mother, Gordie understood. Whatever excuse to not hear a peep from Melony, he'd put his weight behind!
The song didn't conclude like that when he was a lad. His three brothers had produced their own riff off the old favourite.
Give it up to them for rhyming "hand" with "hand." It took rock-hard guts!
The farmer in their version was Milo. Gordie's brothers pressed (or Melony coached them into pressing) that Gordie should do as they sang and take Milo's hand. In their family, the impact of Circhester suggested if you found a person who could melt your heart – as Milo melted Gordie's with his warm nature – you'd found the love of your life. Or, since Gordie refused to have anything to do with Ice-types, substitute breaking a heart of stone for melting a heart of ice in this scenario.
Their sister stayed out of it. She was too "cool" to be a nosy parker.
Gordie reminded himself he was cool too. Not in the sense that he was frosty towards anyone (Melony excluded). Cool in the sense that Shuckle was his preferred Pokémon, and lasses still viewed him so ace they'd watch him battle!
Except, unlike his sister, maybe not too cool to cave to his brothers' nursery rhymes.
Down by the bay,
Where the watermelons grow,
Back to my home,
I dare not go,
For if I do,
My mother will say:
Did you ever see Milo and Gordie having a chuckle while petting a Shuckle?
Down by the bay!
