A.N.:So this a brief introductory chapter. Hopefully it gives you a good idea as far as the setting and how most of our beloved volleyball boys fit into it. Obviously, there are a few very important members missing, but we will get to them in due time. There will be a blend of both plots, but with some differences here and there. This is really just an excuse to have me play around with Karasuno and Firefly, but I hope you find it entertaining! Rating is for language and eventual violence and themes.

Chapter 1
"…Oops…"
"What do you mean oops?!"
"Would you prefer, 'oh god, oh god, we're all gonna die!'?"
"Suga..."
"We lost the decoupler cap."
"Meaning?"
"Meaning our landing's going to be rough at best."
A heavy sigh filled the space between the exhausted Captain and his silver-haired pilot.
"Just try not to kill anyone, including us." the captain prefaced as he made his way out of the pilot's room.
"I can only promise my best Daichi"
The young Captain Daichi Sawamura ran a weary hand over his face, and gently placed a fond hand on the side of one of the ship's panels.
"Hang in there Karasuno, we'll make it yet girl."
The ship seemed to let out a low groan of appreciation...or maybe a desperate need of an oil change.
"Hey Cap'in."
Daichi turned to see Tanaka, the ship's temporary gunner, long time mercenary, come out from his cabin.
"What's up Tanaka?"
"Ennoshita and I were talking earlier," Tanka said looking slightly nervous, "and we were thinking that maybe, while we're in Eden...we should look at picking up a couple more crew members."
Daichi held his stern expression.
"I mean it was really all Ennoshita's idea."
"Wow, you know for a merc you really are nothing but a big chicken, huh Tanaka."
Ennoshita made his way from the corner he had been standing near. If Daichi had to guess, they had drawn straws to see who would be the one to approach him with the idea and in actuality, they had both lost.
"But he's right Captain," Daichi's first mate continued, ignoring the fuming glare from Tanaka, "we need a crew."
"We have a crew."
"A skeleton crew maybe." Tanaka scoffed.
Daichi gave him another harsh look, but this time, Tanaka held his ground. The captain realized he was starting to become outnumbered.
"I already told you, "Daichi continued, "we'll get them back."
"That still only puts six people flying this ship."
All three heads turned toward the pilot who was now making his way down from the cockpit.
"Sugawara," Ennoshita exclaimed looking worried, "shouldn't you be landing us?"
"Or you know, keep us from crashing in a flaming ball of death?" Daichi questioned.
"You really think I'd crash Karasuno?" Suga scoffed with a smirk, "You wound me Captain. We've already breached the atmosphere and Karasuno'll have no trouble autopiloting from here."
His jovially expression then turned serious, "And anyway, you should listen to them Daichi, even if we get them back..."
"When."
"Okay, when we get them back, that's one gunner, one mechanic, one pilot, one merc, a captain and a first mate. We can't run on that alone forever."
Daichi sighed again, taking a quick look at Terra Novum coming into the view out the port side window. A sight that, while familiar, was not too welcoming.
"Fine. We'll get the supplies we need to make it back to Argus and then we'll see what we can find as far as crew."
Daichi watched as the rest of his crew smiled and he couldn't help but smile himself. Sure, he didn't expect to find much in the way of reliable crew in Eden, but maybe they could at least get some temporary help on their way to Argus. And then, once they had the rest of their crew back, the others would see that they could manage just fine. Karasuno never failed them. Right at that moment, a tremor rocked the ship, startling them and forcing them each to grab something for support or risk falling face first. Daichi shot Suga a look.
"Right, I'm on it."
Daichi sighed, suddenly having a very bad feeling about the rest of the day.
*FLY*
Eden was one of the first cities ever to be settled outside of Earth Prime. Much like the ancient city of New York, it had once been a shinning beacon of hope for weary space travelers of all creeds looking for a bit of respite. And like most cities that ended up inhabited by large amounts of people, most of it had gone to crap. Now the streets were cramped and reeked of raw meat, body odor, and sewage. It was hard to move anywhere without brushing elbows with everyone in the street. So Tobio Kageyama wondered how the hell he had managed to lose sight of that annoying tangerine.
"You lost him again didn't you."
Kageyama growled under his breath, clenching his fists as he looked to where the voice giving him a headache resided.
"How do you know he didn't lose me?!" he seethed quietly.
"You both are such hopeless idiots."
"Shut up Tsukishima."
The taller blonde pushed up his glasses before giving one of his trademark smirks that made Kageyama want to punch him right in the face.
"Whatever you say, your highness."
Kageyama officially no longer cared if they were supposed to be moving covertly, he was balling up his fist and aiming right for those stupid white teeth, when another voice said,
"Isn't that him over there?"
Kageyama turned to where Yamaguchi had pointed, clearly trying to keep the other two from coming to blows, but sure enough, he was finally able to spot the familiar clump of red hair. He quickly stormed over to the short figure and quickly greeted him by smacking him on the back of his head.
"Kageyama!" the shorter teen shouted angrily, turning to face him, "what did you do that for?!"
"Hinata you idiot!" Kageyama growled, "Why did you run off like that?! Are you trying to get us all caught?!"
"Kageyama, you guys gotta see this! It's the most amazing thing!"
Before Kageyama could reach out and grab his collar, Hinata dashed forward once more, leaving Kageyama no choice but to race after him, Yamaguchi and Tsukishimia following close behind. It took them a few minuets to catch up with the speed demon, but eventually found him staring at the side of one of the ships in the landing bay. Most of the people were passing it by without so much as a glance, but Hinata was staring up at it with the widest eyes, and Kageyama knew that look meant they were in for a world of trouble.
"What is that?" Yamaguchi asked moving in for a closer look.
"It says Karasuno," Tsukishima said plainly, giving a long-suffering sigh at the looks of confusion, "you know, the Battle of Karasuno, the final nail in the coffin for the black coats and the resistance? How did any of you pass the academy's history course?"
"It's the little giant!"
"Boke Hinata!" Kageyama said rolling his eyes.
"The little giant!" Hinata, repeated, eyes full of stars as he reached up, turning Kageayama's head forcefully to look at the at the side of the ship.
The colors were faded and some of the paint was chipping along the edges, but it was a very distinct picture of a figure wearing a long black coat both fists up in the air on a lone hill with black feathers fallen all around him.
"The little giant?"
Once again Tsuki sighed as the other two looked to him for an answer, "He was one of the main leaders in the rebellion against the Alliance. Supposedly he was real short and so everybody started calling him the Tiny Giant."
Kageyama turned back to Hinata who couldn't take his eyes of the painting.
"Look, I get it, but we need to keep our head down if we're gonna find a way off this piece of gou shi.*"
"We have to fly with this ship!"
Now all three heads turned to the carrot top, staring at him with disbelief.
"Are you serious?!"
"You really are an idiot!"
"Hinata Boke!"
"Hey what's all the racket back here?"
Kageyama turned quickly, automatically moving himself in front of Hinata and Yamaguchi, ignoring a pointed look from 'four eyes'. Two figures wearing long black jackets moved forward, one with a nearly shaved head and a crazed look in his eyes, the other, though much more normal looking, somehow appearing twice as intimidating. With nothing but a stoic expression and crossed arms, Kageyama could tell that this wasn't someone to be messed with.
"We were just leav…."
"Where can we sign up to be a part of the crew?"
Kageyama and the others turned to glare at Hinata, who pointedly ignored them, shoving his way forward to eagerly approach the newcomers, who looked even more surprised at Hinata. The crazy one started laughing,
"You got some nerve kid." He said stepping forward to meet Hinata's determined glare, "I like this one Daichi!"
He wrapped an arm around Hinata's shoulders like they were old friends, "Stick with us kid, you'll see across all the galaxies."
Hinata's eyes lit up with energy and determination and Kageyama knew there was no going back now. His gaze now focused on the more intimidating figure, studying the four of them in a way that Kageyama was all too used to.
"And what are a couple of cadets doing wandering around the junkyard at this time of day?"
"Who said we were cadets?" Tsukishima asked sharply.
"We got kicked out of the Academy." Kageyama quickly supplied, "Cutting too many classes, messing with the flight equipment."
"Boy does that take me back." Tanaka said fondly, arms still wrapped around Hinata's shoulder.
"Right, and which Academy was this?" the guy…Daichi, Kageyama remembered that's what the crazy one had called him, asked.
Kageyama felt his nerves creeping up, his mind quickly fishing around his memory and coming up very empty.
"Ying Yan*," Yamaguchi supplied, lying particularly smoothly for someone who usually avoided any kind of confrontation, "here in Eden."
Daichi nodded, seeming to take the bait for now, "And what were your positions?"
"Pilot." Kageyama replied without hesitation.
"Unclassified." Yamaguchi said with less certainty than before.
"Medic." Tsukishima replied a bit more evenly.
"And what about you short stack?" Tanka asked ruffling Hinata's hair, "Let me guess, Engineering?"
"What, no!" Hinata said eventually able to scramble out from Tanaka's friendly embrace, his face lit up again with that stupid determination that was the bane of Kageyama's existence, "I want to be an Ace Gunner, just like the Tiny Giant!"
This was about the time that people would usually laugh and Kageyama didn't blame them. Someone as short, scrawny, and hopelessly optimistic wasn't exactly what most people viewed as heavy gunner material, let alone an Ace. He knew it was only a matter of seconds before crazy burst a gut laughing and Daichi sent them packing. After a few minuets however, Kageyama was surprised to see the two sharing a rather serious look, before Tanaka turned back to Hinata.
"So you wanna be like the Tiny Giant huh? That's a pretty big dream."
"Good thing you don't have to be tall to dream big right?"
Kageyama hated when Hinata got like this. Life was ready to kick them in the teeth at any moment, and yet this idiot was still full of hope. Like he knew somehow that things would go his way despite everyone and everything trying to stop him. It was that same stupid optimism that had dragged the others along this crazy journey of survival with barely a dozen credits to their name. Daichi was looking at Hinata, but this time it was a different look. It was a look of understanding and appreciation that he couldn't ever remember seeing from anyone before. Daichi turned back to the rest of them.
"We could always use a medic, even if you're still in training. Lord knows Tanaka goes through bandages like this goes through gas."
"Thanks Dai, love you too."
"We have a pilot, but I'm sure he wouldn't mind you shadowing, and technically, we have an Ace Gunner, but it'd be good for him to have a protegee."
Kageyama looked a little confused at Tanaka's stifled laughter, but Hinata looked elated. He couldn't help but smile himself. He would do anything to get behind the wheel of a ship again, even if it was only from the co-pilot's seat.
"But let's get one thing straight, Karasuno only flies if everyone on the ship works together. We all work as one here; everyone pulls their own weight, everyone follows orders. There's no showboating here. No showing off, or otherwise aggravating the rest of the crew. Doesn't matter where you come from, who you are, or how good you are, no one is above anyone on this crew. If you can manage that, then there's no better ship you'll find in this or any other universe."
Kageyama chose to ignore the painful reminder of his past failings and instead focused on the way Daichi talked about the ship and it's crew. He had worked on a couple of ships at the academy, and none of the captains had such deep admiration for the vessel, let alone their crew. But even though he had only known Daichi for a few minutes, there was loyalty that rolled off the guy's shoulder's like a wind in a hurricane.
"Yes sir!" Hinata exclaimed, before turning to the others, "That works for us right guys?"
"It does sound like what we were looking for right Tsuki?" Yamaguchi asked.
Said blonde sighed, shifting his glasses, "I suppose."
"Aww, you love us already don't you Tsuki?" Tanaka laughed.
"Don't call me that."
Kageyama felt Daichi's gaze settle on him, somehow making him feel like he was under a microscope. Finally, Kageyama nodded, "Yes sir, I think we can do that."
Daichi smiled for the first time since they had met. It was full of warmth and sincerity and made Kageyama feel a strange sense of belonging.
"Then welcome to the crew of Karasuno, we're happy to have you."
*FLY*
"Sorry Suga, I'm sure you guys will have better luck on Argus."
"Thanks anyway Tadski."
Suga walked out of the shop with a heavy sigh.
"No luck on the part huh?" Ennoshita asked with a sympathetic smile.
"Not for another six weeks." Suga replied, "Apparently, the Alliance has nearly wiped everyone's supplies out for the next two systems."
Ennoshita whistled and Suga nodded in agreement. The two black coats knew that the Alliance was known for making it impossible for most private vessels to make a living, but this seemed a little overboard. As the two started to make their way back to the dockyard, Ennoshita asked,
"Do you think we can make it back to Argus without it."
Suga put on his best reassuring smile, "I'm sure we'll be fine."
If Ennoshita didn't believe him, he didn't say anything and Suga was grateful for that. The last thing the crew needed to worry about was the fact that Karasuno needed a whole list of parts as long as his arm. Normally, their mechanic was able to come up with miracle patches to hold them over until they were able to afford the parts, but that wasn't an option right now. So for now, Karasuno would be flying one grit, sheer force of will, and duct tape, but it wouldn't be the first time. Karasuno had been through many scrapes and Suga was sure she would get them through many more.
"I'm sure Daichi's right," Suga continued, "once we get to Argus, those two will come to their senses and we'll be back to business as usual."
"Good old smuggling," Ennoshita chuckled, "never knew I'd miss it so much."
Suga laughed back, "We live in pretty crazy times Ennoshita."
"Speaking of, think Daichi managed to find any help at the docks?"
Suga shook his head with a playful sigh, "If he didn't scare everyone off, he probably found a reason that they weren't good enough to step foot on Karasuno, let alone fly with her."
In truth, Sugawara understood why their Captain was so protective of the ship, and more so her crew. But sometimes Suga wished his friend would let his walls down just a little. After all, they had all been new crew members to Karasuno at one point or another.
It looked like Ennoshita was about to say something else when they heard a thud and a loud yelp coming form inside Karasuno's loading bay. Darting inside quickly Suga was stunned to see two young teens yelling at each other, two more looking on.
"Watch it Boke!"
"You were the one who didn't have a good grip Bakeyama!"
"Please tell me you guys didn't break anything."
"Don't get in the middle of it Yamaguchi."
"Sorry Tsuki."
"Someone want to tell me what's going on here?"
The teens turned to look at Suga who quickly took in their appearance, estimating that they were probably around fourteen or fifteen years old, though one looked like he could be twelve.
"Ahh, Suga, Ennoshita you're back!"
Suga looked up to see Daichi and Tanaka coming down from the top deck of the ship. Tanaka made his way over to the group, ensuring that nothing of value had been damaged. Daichi had a huge grin on his face that made Suga very nervous.
"So what do you think?" Daichi asked.
"What do we think of what?"
"Our new crewmembers!"
Suga stared mouth agape while Ennoshita burst into fits of giggling.
"What?"
"Daichi, when I said we should get some more crew members, I didn't mean for Tanaka to rob the nearest orphanage!"
"Oi! I will not stand by this slander!"
"Aren't you supposed to be getting the new crew settled in Tanaka?"
Tanaka grumbled before motioning for the teens to follow him for a quick tour; Ennoshita deciding to follow and make sure Tanaka didn't mess with his stuff. Suga sighed, starting to make his way up to the cockpit.
"Suga."
"If this is a joke it isn't funny."
"You really think I would do something like that?"
"Did you even ask them about their parents and what they might think of their kids working on board a smuggler's ship."
"I prefer liberation and re-distribution."
Suga stopped in the hall to glare at Daichi. Daichi met his gaze, unwavering.
"You really think a bunch of kids looking for work in the back of the dockyard in Eden really have family to go back to."
"What if they're in some kind of trouble?"
"Like we aren't on a daily basis."
"Stop being so quippy…it doesn't suit you."
"Koshi."
Suga took a deep breath, knowing that when Daichi said his name like that, he was being completely serious. The pilot looked up to meet the gaze of his captain and longtime friend, dark brown meeting soft grey.
"They need a place to belong."
Suga knew any argument he attempted to use would be useless now. Trying to argue with Daichi when he was in his "save the world one stray at a time" mode was like trying to empty an ocean with an eyedropper. But it was easily one of Daichi's best qualities, one of which had endeared him to the captain long ago.
"Alright, but I'm not fixing anything they break."
As Suga started to head back into the familiarity of the cockpit Daichi smiled, "Now we just gotta get the rest of the crew and we're all set."
"You don't want much do you Captain." Suga teased as he began his pre-flight prep.
"Nothing impossible, just improbable."
Suga laughed, beginning to get Karasuno ready for flight once more, knowing that no matter what happened, as long as Daichi believed in them, they would always fly high.
*FLY*
The pit that had been sitting in his stomach was slowly lifting as Karasuno took to the air. Though he had been hesitant about getting some new crew on board, something about hearing Tanaka shouting orders at the new kids, hearing Ennoshita admonishing him, and knowing that Suga was flying them straight to Argus, felt right. The nest wasn't full yet, but it would be, and then nothing would keep them from their place in the sky.
A.N.: Like I said just a brief little glimpse into the world. More will be revealed, conflict will occur and our boys will be put to the test. Read below for a quick glimpse into the next chapter and feel free to leave a review!

"What's a Guardian Diety?"
"HE'S the ACE?"
"Well, if it isn't a couple of sights for sore eyes!"
"I already told you Daichi, you all'd be better off without me."
"And I told you to cut the crap already."
"What idiot was messing around with my ship?!"
"Your ship?!"
"Tsuki, I think that guy's been watching us."
"I'm going to ask you one more time! Who are you guys?!"
"What is going on down here?!"
BANG.
