Author's Notes: Welcome to another chapter of my debut work in the Harry Potter fanfiction domain. Thank you for all the support. We are almost at 10k views. It would be fun, if there were some more reviews though (just my thought).
Again, This is only for recreation and i don't get any monetary benefit from this. J K Rowling is the GOAT.
Chapter 11
Lucius Malfoy was an ambitious man. He desired to be the person with the most power in the establishment. He didn't want to be king, but rather the king-maker. He wanted laws to be created which would benefit him and his friends. He needed money for this. His father had left him a huge inheritance which had been invested in various businesses in the magical world. But he needed more. That's why he had sought out Narcissa Black. As the eldest daughter, she stood to inherit a lot from her father's side, the prestigious Black family. Reports said that his wealth was nothing compared to what the Black family possessed. Multiple properties in multiple cities, Thousands invested in businesses, and Millions sitting in Gringotts vaults. And he wanted it all. If not for him, at least for his heir.
Later on, he had come in contact of Lord Voldemort. He had been inflamed by his words and desire. A magical world under the control of the strongest purebloods was the ultimate dream. He had readily pledged his support to the cause and had helped recruit a number of dark families. The Lestranges, Notts, Crabbe, Goyle, Mulciber, Avery, Selwyn were all part of a voting bloc who supported the 'Dark side' in the Wizengamot. He had convinced them to support the Dark Lord. Some had refused. They had been abolished by the growing numbers of Lord Voldemort. But there was one person who had considerable sway on the Dark side, The head of the Black family, Arcturus Black. He was the last thorn remaining on their side. Removing him out of the picture would make him the undisputable leader of their faction on the Wizengamot (the Dark Lord seldom cared about politics). A day might come when there would only be a dark faction in the system. He wanted to be at the forefront of such a system and control the entire magical world, of course as the right-hand man of the Dark Lord.
He had given it a lot of thought and had finally come to a decision. He would have to take out the Black patriarch and his heir to make sure his son Draco would become the heir of that family. This would allow him access to all the wealth as Regent. The idea was to entice the Dark Lord into attacking the Black family head. He knew he was nowhere in the league of Arcturus Black, a man famous to have led a regiment of warriors against the Dark Lord Grindelwald and battled him to a draw. Only Lord Voldemort could take him down. All that remained was to convince him.
During a subsequent meeting, Lucius had breached the topic of taking down the Black family patriarch. He promised additional finance to the cause which would become accessible once Draco would become the DeFacto heir of the Black family. Also, he promised the Dark Lord access to the Black library which had millions of books on dark magic. The appearance of a gleam in the Dark Lord's eyes had brought him immense happiness. Bellatrix Lestrange had become angry when he had proposed the plan. She had been silenced by the Dark Lord.
As per his latest intelligence reports, Arcturus Black had taken ill and had moved to a townhouse in muggle London along with his heir. The house was under a considerable number of wards. As per the Dark Lord's plan, Narcissa had reached out to her grandfather and asked for a meeting to request sanctuary. Her request had been accepted and Sirius was going to meet her at the Hog's Head inn in Hogsmeade. If everything went to plan, they would have their hands on the Black fortune by the end of the next day.
The Potters had arrived in London and were staying at Daniel's place. They wanted to keep their visit a secret and return back without anybody the wiser. Daniel and his wife had been very happy to have them all visit. Daniel had brought his wife in on the secret and she had been curious to learn more about the hidden world. James and Lily had tried their level best in explaining the basics to her and demonstrated some spells for her amusement. She had been left speechless. Both the Potter kids had been doted on by the adults. It had been a warm reunion for all the Potters.
Lily and James were waiting for Sirius to arrive on Halloween. He was going to be their chaperone for their visit. Unfortunately, Dora had fallen sick and wouldn't be going with them. She had been given some Dreamless Sleep potion and was sound asleep at her uncle's place.
Sirius arrived on time and after the usual pleasantries, they had all port keyed into the front porch of the house.
The house had originally been used by Sirius' parents, and Arcturus stayed at the Black manor. Ever since the death of Orion and Walburga, the house had been empty. The house elf had not taken proper care of the house as well. Sirius explained that they were only staying here for a few days, post which they would return back to Black manor. Lord Black was currently in the master bedroom under constant bed rest.
James had decided to stay in the living room and catch up with his best friend while Lily along with young Harry would go talk to her grandfather. Sirius was scheduled to leave in a while for a pre-arranged meeting.
Lily knocked on the bedroom and waited. A weak voice asked her to enter.
She entered to find her grandfather lying down on the bed. He looked very pale and sick. He had lost a lot of weight and his eyes had sunken. His hands were trembling and he looked nowhere like the grandfather she knew.
Lily started sobbing on looking at him. He beckoned her to come and sit near him. She complied and sat on a stool near the bed.
Downstairs, James and Sirius were discussing about their company. James had explained how he wanted to expand his business to broadcasting live quidditch matches to the homes of the magical population. Sirius had shown enough excitement, and James had agreed to have him over during the testing phase.
They had touched upon British politics and the ineffective ministry, how Cornelius Fudge was becoming a potential candidate to take over as Minister, and how Dumbldeore had become ineffective in the past few years as Chief Warlock. Sirius had asked if he ever wished to return to the island, and James had opined that until the magical population of Britain became more tolerant towards all magical creatures, they didn't imagine relocating. James had shared his own experience about the magical population of America. He had been accepted and not looked down as muggle-born. He had also added that even though there was some corruption in the MACUSA, it was because some people were greedy and not because the establishment forced them to be. He had concluded that The MOM was a backward establishment with its archaic laws and there needed to be a major cleanup, before he, his family or any similar minded magical wished to return.
Sirius had been disappointed with this, but knew that what James had mentioned was true. Given an opportunity he would probably have done the same. He noticed that it was almost time for his appointment. He hated to do this, but had no other option. A daughter of Black had requested sanctuary and it was his responsibility to at least hear her out before he or his grandfather took any call. He asked James to get comfortable and had taken his leave. He had advised him not to venture outside, as the wards would make it hard to re-enter as he was not a Black by blood.
Upstairs, the scene was quite different. The raw emotions were all over the place. Lily was sad that her grandfather was in such a condition. Arcturus was happy that his favorite granddaughter was well and good. He was elated looking at Harry, his future heir. He had enquired about her wellbeing, her studies and work, and if she was happy. Lily had responded in the affirmative. Then it had been Arcturus' turn. He had explained how losing the rest of the family had taken a toll on him. He couldn't bear his children leave the mortal world before him. The shocker had been the loss of Reggie. He was just a young boy, with a conflicted thought process. He didn't deserve to die so early. He told Lily about his suspicions about the dark Lord personally killing Reggie and the requirement for the remaining people to be extremely careful lest the family got wiped out completely. He had wanted to meet Nymphadora as well, but understood the reason why she couldn't be there. He knew his time was close and he couldn't wait to meet his beloved wife in the afterlife.
Lily was still sobbing sitting at her grandfather's side. Little Harry was sitting on the bed near Arcturus playing with some toys he had brought with him.
BOOM!
The entire building shook as if that place was the epicenter of an earthquake.
"What the-"
"Lily, we are under attack. You need to leave now with Harry and James. They are here for me. They don't know about your arrival. Leave now!"
"But how can I leave you like this? We should at least put up a fight."
"NO, YOU NEED TO LEAVE. YOU NEED TO PROTECT HARRY. HE IS OUR HOPE. TAKE HIM NOW AND LEAVE"
Another BOOM shook the building.
"The wards won't hold for long. This isn't Black manor. Take the floo and go. HURRY!"
Suddenly the door opened. Lily had her wand in her hand, but found James instead.
"Lily, Lord Black are you guys, ok? Looks like somebody is attacking us."
"James, all of you need to leave now. You were never here."
Lily went to the fireplace, picket up some floo powder and tried to leave. She couldn't.
"The Floo is down."
James pulled Lily out and tried to side-along apparate. They couldn't
"Looks like whoever is attacking us has taken the floo down and setup anti-apparation wards, and if I guess anti-portkey wards as well."
"We will have to make a stand. Lily, you and Harry stay with Lord Black. I will try to stop the enemy from reaching here."
"James, we don't know how many are attacking. You can't take them all alone."
"We don't have a choice, Lils. If I don't survive, just know that I love you, Harry and Dora the most in my life. It was a blessing when you came into my life and I don't regret a single moment of my life with you."
He kissed Lily. He felt her crying. There was no other option. He kissed Harry on his forehead and said to him-
"Daddy loves you and Dora. Make sure you tell this to her, Ok? You need to take care of mom now. You need to grow up, learn lots of magic and have lots of fun. I am going to miss you buddy. "
"Lils, send a Patronus to Sirius. He can provide assistance from the outside."
He bowed one last time to Arcturus and left the room, wand in hand, leaving behind a distraught Lily to make a final stand.
Sirius was sitting across from Narcissa in the Hog's head inn. He had been on alert ever since his arrival. The Hog's head was known to be a watering hole featuring many shady figures. It was also a place where people picked up information, setup deals and had clandestine meetings. He had arrived to find Narcissa sitting at a booth which was quite secluded from the regular fanfare. He looked around to find some cloaked figures a couple of booths away. He had discreetly taken out his wand and was ready to defend himself, if the situation demanded it.
Luckily, until now the situation had remained calm. They had caught up on old times. Sirius had enquired about young Draco and his own marriage had also come into discussion. It had been unpleasant at times, but not something that Sirius would get offended. The Sirius who was childish and full of pranks was a thing of the past. He had become more mature under the tutelage of his grandfather. He knew why he had come here and never lost track of that.
Narcissa had eventually ended up talking about the agenda of the meeting. She told Sirius how she felt insecure raising Draco under the dark Lord's patronage. She didn't want Draco to end up like her father and was looking for an opportunity to get away from all of it. Sirius had assured her he would discuss it with Lord Black and see what could be done about it. That's when a silver doe entered the bar and spoke in Lily's voice-
"WE ARE UNDER ATTACK. NEED HELP"
Sirius immediately rose, wand in hand, only to find five wands pointed at him.
"We can't let you go that easily now, can we?"
"You will die here today, Sirius Black. As will your grandfather. The Dark Lord will be happy his plan went along without a hitch."
"You don't scare me, you lousy bunch of shitholes. You lack the ability to attack head on. Hence these back-handed tactics. I understand now that this was a setup. Just one thing Narcissa, were you really in need of sanctuary or was it only a ploy? Because, trust me, even if you wanted out after this, you burned that bridge completely."
"Why would I want sanctuary when I am under the service of the greatest wizard since Merlin? We will soon take over this world and make it as it was supposed to be. You were a fool to fall for this deception."
"Be that it may. If I survive today, I will make sure you will regret this."
What neither Sirius nor the death-eaters knew was that the bar tender was a member of a group called the Order of the Phoenix. And amongst the patrons were members of the same organization. On his cue, they all took to action.
The death eaters didn't even realize that two of their party had been taken down when wands were placed at their throats.
"Look what we have here. An ambush. But you didn't expect us here, now did you? Should have picked a better location. Tsk, tsk, tsk." spoke Alastor "Mad Eye" Moody.
"I hope all the other death eaters are equally stupid as this bunch. Now, drop your wands and walk slowly towards the wall. Sirius Black, was it? I guess today is your lucky day. You were required elsewhere, right? Get going! We will take care of things here." This was the voice of the bartender, Aberforth Dumbledore.
Sirius looked like he met a ghost. Never had he ever been so thankful to anybody else. He quickly thanked them all and with one disdainful look at Narcissa apparated out to 12 Grimmauld Place.
While Sirius was having his discussion, James had readied himself in the living room of 12 Grimmauld Place. The tremors seemed to become stronger and more frequent. He just needed to survive long enough to take down the maximum number from the attack party and hoped Lily would take down the rest. He was ready.
Upstairs, Lily was standing in the hallway outside the master bedroom. Harry was sitting with Arcturus, who unfortunately wasn't strong enough to take part in the upcoming fight. For Lily, Harry was the first priority. If need be, she would sacrifice herself to make sure he survived. She was ready.
Lord Black felt the weakest he ever felt in his life. He knew his family was fighting for survival, and here he was, bedridden, unable to contribute. He looked at his great grandson who was happily playing alongside him, without knowing that his parents were fighting for their lives just a few meters away. All he could do was cry. He put a hand across Harry and pulled him into an embrace. Surprisingly, the baby didn't cry. He instead hugged back.
James was patiently waiting for the first attackers to enter. His wand was poised for the attack. He had decided not to use stunners and disarmers. He would go for maximum impact and damage. His family's existence was at stake.
Just then, the front door blasted apart. The ensuing dust reduced visibility. Nevertheless, James sent his first spell
"BOMBARDA"
The spell was batted away by a dark silhouette. It ended up destroying a section of the wall to the left of James.
"REDUCTO"
Again, the spell was redirected. James had been lucky not to be in the impact zone. He responded with some more curses. None made impact with the attacker.
Then the person came into view. Dark red eyes, pale complexion, snakelike face with almost no nose. He was dressed in a long green robe. His long fingers held a dark colored wand. He bore a strange resemblance to a comic book villain famous in the states, except that the comic book villain had a red face.
James had expected a bunch of death eaters, not the dark Lord himself. The situation had gone from bad to worse in a few moments. He shouted at the top of his voice -
"LILY, ITS HIM. THE DARK HARRY AND HIDE. "
He hoped his voice had carried over to his wife. What it had done for sure, was given away his position to the dark Lord. Before he could realize, a dark green spell had been cast at him and he dropped dead.
Upstairs, Lily had heard James' shout. It had been followed by a thud and then silence. She had returned to Arcturus' room and had strongarmed the door from the inside. She stood facing the door guarding the two behind her.
The house had gone silent. Then, she heard footsteps. Coming closer. Then the door blasted away and the dark Lord walked in. He looked at Lily at apathy,
"Stand aside, girl. I am not here for you. "
"No! If you want to kill anybody today, it would be only after you kill me."
"Foolish girl, I have already killed a person downstairs. He didn't even put up a proper fight."
Something inside Lily broke. Her immediate reaction was to raise her wand towards her husband's killer-
Instead, what she saw was a green beam of light heading towards her. In a split second, her heart went towards Harry and Dora, and how she wished they would stay safe. Then she dropped dead.
Harry, who had been silent till now, immediately started crying. It's like he realized what had befallen his parents.
Arcturus was just looking at the dark Lord with extreme hatred and vitriol.
"So, this is how I kill the Lord Black. The situation couldn't be more pathetic, could it? Wandless, defenseless. Even I feel sorry for you. "
"You came here to kill me. Do it and get lost. I don't want you besmirching my house anymore. My heir will exact vengeance for me."
"Your heir would probably be dead by now. Narcissa and my other followers would have sent him to the after-life."
"So, this is how it ends, is it? Go on then. What are you waiting for?"
Harry hadn't stopped crying all this while. Arcturus still held him close.
"Could you stop the child from crying? It's giving me a headache."
"You just killed his parents. What do you expect?"
"Fine then. I will kill him first then."
Before Arcturus could say anything, another green beam light had already hit Harry.
It was followed by an explosion which desecrated everything in the room, sending splinters of wood all across the room. The crying had stopped completely.
Arcturus was still alive, though barely. He had splinters of wood embedded into his skin and he was bleeding profusely from various places. He crawled on all fours and found a piece of wall to lean on. What surprised him was the absence of spells. A few moments ago, he thought he would be in the afterlife. Now, it looked like he had survived. But he couldn't say the same for his granddaughter's family. How he wished that he was the one dead and the others would have survived.
Eventually the dust settled. The sight in front of him literally took the breath out of him. Sitting in the middle of the room was Harry. He was just sitting there looking at the devastation of the room. Arcturus looked around to find a green cloak lying near the door. Where had the dark lord gone?
With his remaining energy, he crawled towards Harry and picked him up into his arms. Harry immediately held on to Arcturus. A short while later, he was asleep.
Arcturus couldn't believe nor explain what had happened there. How did Harry survive? Where was the Dark Lord? Had Harry vanquished him?
He examined Harry for any wounds. He only found a fresh lightning bolt scar on his forehead. He knew he wouldn't survive the night, not with his wounds. Before his passing, he had to ensure Harry would end up safe. He closed his eyes trying to gather his energy before he took his next step.
Sirius had apparated back to the house immediately after his failed murder attempt. He found the main door blasted away. A section of wall had been destroyed and the house bore a lot of damage. He entered the living room to find James on the floor, dead. He immediately rushed towards him and took his head into his lap.
"Padfoot, please don't be dead. Wake up! Wake up, PLEASE!". But his brain had already started processing the information. His best friend was dead. He would never laugh with him again. He was lost to memory
Sirius realized he had arrived late. He didn't know if anybody else had survived or not.
He stood up and quickly cast 'Homenium Revelio', which told him there were two people alive upstairs. There were three people upstairs when he had left. He didn't know if the two upstairs were friends or foes, either.
With bated breath and caution. He slowly made his way upstairs. Upon reaching the master bedroom, he saw that the room was completely demolished.
His eyes fell upon two bodies in a corner of the room- His grandfather and Harry sleeping in his arms.
"Grandpa. What Happened? I am so glad you and Harry are ok. Where is Lily? How did this happen?"
Arcturus slowly opened his eyes to find Sirius in front of him.
"Siri, I couldn't be any happier to know you survived. Listen, don't talk. I don't have a lot of time. The dark lord himself came here to kill me today. He ended up killing James and Lily. Then, he tried to kill Harry. I don't know how but, the spell intended for Harry must have rebounded onto Voldemort. That green cloak over there is his. I don't know what happened to his body. But you can find his wand in the debris for sure. Lily is also below the rubble. I believe the dark lord is gone."
"The Dark Lord dead? Harry killed him? This is confusing, grandpa."
"I know Siri, as I said, even I don't understand all of it. But now is not the time to think. We need to do some things to ensure Harry's safety. First, I want you to take him to his father's brother. He will become a target if the death eaters come to know he killed Voldemort. Ask them to leave the country, if necessary. Secondly, I want you to go with them. Inform the goblins about my death and ask them to enforce my will. The vaults should become inaccessible to anybody apart from you and Harry. I have named you Regent, and Harry as my heir. Thirdly, come back and retrieve all our bodies and have them buried behind Black manor, as tradition dictates. In his last act, your friend has shown all the values of a true Black and he deserves it. Lastly, once the dust settles, get a healer to check Harry's scar. I feel dark magic emanating from it.
"But I can get you to a healer, you don't have to die."
"No Siri. It's too late. Harry is the priority now. Save him."
"As you wish, Grandfather. Please try and stay alive till I get Harry safe. I would really need your guidance now."
"I have already taught you all that I know. Now is the time to utilize it. And make sure Harry learns it as well. He is your responsibility Sirius. One last thing, what did Narcissa want?"
"Let's not talk about her now. She was involved in today's events heavily. It was a ploy to separate us and murder both of us. You know the outcome."
"Ah. And Bella?"
"I didn't see her."
"Then there is hope. If you ever get the opportunity to redeem her, do it. We both know what she has been through. Kill the Malfoys and Lestranges and get Bella away from under their influence."
"I will Grandpa. I promise. All your sacrifices will not be in vain. I will make sure the Black family will rise again. I will be back Grandpa."
Sirius picked up little Harry and apparated out. The anti-apparition wards had fallen, further testament that their caster Lord Voldemort was no longer alive.
Sirius knocked on Daniel's door. It was already late in the night and he had many other errands to run. A few moments later, Mary opened the door. She was surprised to only find Sirius and Harry. They had expected Lily and James to arrive a long time ago. She led him in and took Harry from Sirius. Then she asked -
"Where are James and Lily?
"You need to sit down for this. Is Daniel awake?"
"Yes, He is. Dan, Sirius wants to talk to us. It sounds serious. We will be waiting in the living room for you"
"On my way, dear."
The three along with the infant gathered in the living room. Sirius conjured a bottle of Fire-whiskey and three glasses. He poured fire-whisky into all three. Daniel started
"What's wrong Sirius? Where are James and Lily?"
Sirius then explained everything that he knew to the elder Potters. Mary and Daniel broke down into tears. Sirius then popped the important question.
"Daniel, Mary. This is important and I want you both to think before responding. Would you take in Dora and Harry? They have nowhere else to go. I can care for them, of course. But I don't know anything about parenting. "
Mary spoke immediately-" Why is that even a question? Me and Daniel have been trying for a baby unsuccessfully for the past few years. We consider both of them our kids already."
"I know Mary, but I need to be sure. They are both magical, of course and Harry taking down the dark lord would make him a celebrity overnight. I have few requests if you both are fine with taking in both of them."
"They are Potters, Sirius. We would never give them up." Daniel stated as matter of fact.
"Then, you need to know that both of them are not safe here. The dark lord's followers will eventually identify who took their leader out and would be out for revenge. You need to leave before that happens. Choose any place and relocate. Once you have settled, send me a letter at the address on this card. I will join you guys there, as I want to be part of Harry and Dora's upbringing. He is the future Lord of the Black family and needs to learn his responsibilities from a young age. Plus, I don't have anything else remaining here. With grandfather gone, I better stay close to the only true family I have."
"What about James' and Lily's funeral?"
"I will take care of it. They will be buried in the Black sacred burial ground behind Black manor. That's on my to-do list after this."
"Fine Sirius. We will make necessary preparations. I would need death certificates for James and Lily, so that I can officially foster for Dora and Harry. Once that is done, the family can relocate."
"Ok. I will send the death certificates by Owl post early tomorrow. Sorry for piling this on you. I didn't have any choice."
"We would have killed you if you had thought of doing anything else. You did the right thing and have been straight with us. We will do what is required. If nothing, then at least for James and Lily."
They had one last drink remembering James and Lily. Sirius left soon after.
Sirius returned to 12 Grimmauld Place. He couldn't find the house-elf Kreacher anywhere. He had neither the patience nor the time to think about his absence. He summoned another Black house-elf and gave directions to retrieve James and Lily's body from the debris and move them to Black manor and prepare them for burial. He went upstairs to check on his grandfather, only to find him lifeless. After some silent tears, he asked the house elf to do the same to the former Lord Black as well. He searched the debris for Voldemort's wand and cloak. He put them in a bag and looked around for any further evidence.
He then went to the study and sent a letter to his attorney and asked him to arrive at Gringotts at 9AM the next morning. He then apparated to Black manor.
He asked another house-elf to deliver the letter to his attorney. Then he walked out to the Black sacred burial site with a spade in hand. He found a large unoccupied site and started digging. He couldn't stop crying while doing the same.
After what seemed like several hours, he had dug three graves. All the house elves had gathered at the site by then. He then levitated his best friend, his cousin and his grandfather into their final resting places. On a different day, there probably would be well-wishers and mourners. Unfortunately, this was not one of those days. Their deaths needed to be kept secret for a few more days, until Harry and Dora were safe and untouchable.
He then filled the graves with earth and transfigured the mounds to look like proper tombs worthy of their name. He then went on to write the epitaphs on the headstones. He started with his grandfather-
"Here lies Lord Arcturus Black, a man of profound wisdom, a good man who believed in free will."
For James he wrote
"Here lies James Charles Potter, a true friend, a good husband and father who sacrificed his life for his family"
And finally for Lily, he wrote
"Here lies Lillian 'Lily' Potter, a person who stood by her decisions, an epitome of love and affection, a good wife and mother, who sacrificed her life for her children."
Sirius looked around. It was already dawn and he had some more errands to run. He gave one last look towards the tombstones and with a heavy heart walked back to the home.
Elsewhere, a group of people at Malfoy manor were getting restless. The Dark Lord had not returned from the raid last night. Additionally, the crew that had been sent to kill Sirius Black had also not returned. Lucius had been worried that Narcissa had not come back. But now, he was worried if something had happened to the Dark Lord. It had been his idea to kill Lord Black and Sirius. If something went wrong, he would have to face the brunt of the remaining death eaters. As the man in command, he ordered many groups to carry out raids and find out what had happened to the Dark Lord. They would be targeting Diagon Alley, homes of prominent Aurors and Hogsmeade. He himself had decided to investigate 12 Grimmauld place. Many of the raid party would either be killed or captured, but none would be able to procure information about the Dark Lord's whereabouts.
The captured death eaters at the Hog's head were all being interrogated at the ministry by Alastor Moody. Albus Dumbledore was also in attendance. From the captured death eaters, they had learnt that Voldemort was going to kill Lord Black and they were supposed to have killed Sirius Black. Sirius had been saved. Unfortunately, they couldn't do anything about Lord Black. It wasn't of much significance to them anyway, as he wasn't one of them.
It would only be a few days later, in the heart of the ministry that the truth about the Dark Lord's disappearance would come to light. By that time Harry Potter would be safely sleeping in his crib in a country far away from all of this, not knowing he was famous, not knowing that his family had contributed in putting an end to the tyranny of a maniacal person.
