A/N: Yo. So, this is a story I wrote in June. Around the first time I watched the movie and I ended up really enjoying it. It inspired me to create my own thing, so yeah. Hope you're messing with it :-)
Ken and Raya slowly make their way through a forest next to the village in Heart. Ken accidentally inhaled something he shouldn't have radiating from a nearly hidden family of fungi they casually stepped around. The two were just taking an evening stroll, talking about anything that comes to mind. An hour or so seems to pass before they think about heading their way back home. Thankfully they haven't walked very far in. With noticing Ken's strange and sudden change in demeanor, Raya becomes slightly worried though.
Within every five minutes, Ken seemingly becomes more intoxicated and unorthodox, making Raya have to wrap her arm around him and his arm around her to stop him from falling. He starts acting silly, showing Raya a different side of him. The randomness of his words begin to make Raya laugh and he becomes more of a child by the minute.
"Wait what? How does that make any sense?" Raya asks in between laughter.
"Because Raya...there's no other way that would work. They're definitely hiding something from us." Ken continues his rambling on theories and random thoughts in his dazed state.
"So, that's supposed to explain everything huh?"
"Yup"
Raya chuckles again, unable to process the ridiculous logic of Ken's ultimate theory.
10 minutes of weird conversation go by before the sun starts to descend. The walk still consists of Raya trying to understand Ken while trying to figure out his condition. Her anxiety and concern rises a small amount, but she knows how to keep her composure. There's a couple minutes of silence and Raya starts to get worried. She looks over to check if her friend is okay, and he's still keeping up. He just looks very deep in thought at the ground.
"You still with me here bud?" She asks in a half joking, half concerned tone.
Ken takes a second to respond.
"Yeah, still with you. Hey Raya...what does Sisu think of me?"
This question catches Raya completely off guard and she looks at Ken with a shocked expression. His focus is still directed toward the ground.
"Well uh...she thinks you're cool and fun to hang out with. Why?"
"Nothing I just..." Ken trails off as he hesitates.
"You just...what?"
"I just...really care about her."
Sisu, once again considering the element of surprise on her friends, stops right in her tracks as she lurks between the trees. She puts on her listening ears as her interest in what Ken has to say about her takes over.
"Well, I'm glad and she would be glad that you do too." Raya says, unsure of how to completely respond.
"Yeah but...I really, really care about her Raya." Ken looks at Raya with a slightly serious expression.
Raya catches onto what Ken truly means and slowly nods her head in understanding.
Wait...he likes Sisu? She questions in her mind. An eventuality she never even thought of.
Sisu listens intently as she follows.
"So you...like, like Sisu?" Raya carefully asks for confirmation.
Ken, almost completely unaware that he's giving out his biggest secret continues on in the same slow and slightly lagging voice.
"...Yeah..Raya. I really do."
Raya's eyes go wide in shock, but nothing compared to Sisu's expression. Sisu's mind flips through all of the times she's either seen or interacted with Ken. Every interaction was pleasant and they got along very well. But there was always something different about him that she noticed than Raya. He always stumbled over his words, seemed fidgety, appeared sweaty, and he would even sometimes be visibly shaking when talking to Sisu. At first she thought it was because he was slightly afraid of her. "Maybe he needs some time to get used to dragons? Understandable." She would often think, and respectively give him space. So she stopped questioning it and settled at that.
But now it all makes sense. All of those weird things he does is because he's nervous around me because...he likes me? She realizes within her thoughts.
"Wow Ken...I didn't know you felt that way about her." Raya exclaims as their pace slows.
"I..I really do. Raya she's..she's amazing."
Sisu gives Ken her full attention from within the trees. She drowns out any other sound and makes his voice her priority.
"She's the most beautiful, gorgeous, stunning girl I've ever laid my eyes on. She's a beautiful soul that radiates hope and joy and truth across the land. I'm so lucky to know her closely. I cherish every single moment I'm within her presence. I wish her so much happiness and joy in her life because she deserves it. I want nothing more than for her to be happy. I feel like...every time I see her, I become more attached. I can't stop thinking about her Raya, from when I wake up, to when I go to sleep, and in dreams, even day-dreams. She makes me so happy. Whenever I see her, my day brightens up no matter how bad I'm feeling. I get this weird...boost of energy after seeing her. Seeing those gorgeous, gorgeous eyes, and that beautiful smile. I sometimes..no..often get stuck in a trance when I look at her. She's so majestic. And...perfect."
Ken finishes his long expression of how important Sisu is to him. A few seconds after, he slips from Raya's grasp before Raya catches him and pulls him before he hits the ground.
"Woah! Be careful there Ken. That clearly took a lot out of you."
"Th-Thank you." Ken says as he starts to enter a more sleepy state.
Raya's almost speechless from what she's heard. She's processing what she's heard from one of the quietest individuals she's ever known. This is more than a surprise. She would've never guessed these things if he never said what he said. Or it would've taken a long time to realize because he hides these thoughts so well.
"...That umm, must've really come from the heart huh?"
Tears begin to form in Sisu's eyes as she stares at Ken while frozen in thought. Her eyes wide in shock and disbelief. She plays over every word he said almost repeatedly. No one's ever directly said anything like that about her before. She doesn't know how to completely feel, but her emotions decide for her. Just like Raya, she had no idea he felt this way about her. One of her closest friends. She wasn't upset by any means. In fact, she already felt like she was falling for him in return. A new excitement rushes through her body and mind. She almost darts out of her hiding place to deeply embrace Ken with a new affection and squeal in happiness, but she stops herself.
"Yeah, It truly did." Ken responds, seeming low on energy.
Raya smiles with a new understanding.
"I wonder...why haven't you told her all of this? She would love it. Almost any girl would." Raya asks as she turns to look at him again.
Ken visibly slumps.
"But Raya. There's no way I would have a chance with her. She's...way too perfect. Way out of my league. Way cooler than me. I couldn't keep up. Not like you can. You're the dragon protector, her friend, her ally, you're worth something to her. Me?..I'm not really anything. Mostly a nuisance." Ken stares at the ground looking downcast.
Raya almost get's mad at Ken for demoralizing himself so deeply. She stops right in her tracks and turns him to face toward her.
"Look at me. You're worth something. To both me and Sisu. Not only us, but all of Heart together. All of us care about each other. We need you just as much as anyone else. I'm not perfect and Sisu isn't either. No one is. We all have flaws. All we can do is work towards perfect. But in reality, nothing is perfect. I make multiple mistakes literally everyday, silly mistakes. And I'm not the dragon protector or whatever, I'm just Raya at the end of the day, and Sisu's well, Sisu. Just normal friends despite what we've accomplished. And, you're amazing yourself Ken. You're nice and funny, you have a kind heart, you cook really well. I mean, for real, just whip something up and there is absolutely no way she wouldn't fall for you."
Ken shakes his head and chuckles before Raya continues.
"You are not a nuisance. You're our friend Ken. And I believe you two can be more than that. You just have to tell her how you feel."
Sisu feels upset at how Ken makes himself feel. Everything Raya just said is exactly right and she couldn't agree more. She would never want any of her friends feeling such a way. She's still hesitant on the idea of leaving her hiding spot and reassuring him. But right after he just exposed himself, she would imagine it to be awkward to just randomly show up.
She gives him a look of sympathy and a warm smile. Although, concerned with his current unusual state. She took mental notes of how many times he's stumbled or lost balance. And he's been acting very strange and unusually expressive. His speech has also been increasingly slurred.
"Is he drunk maybe? Nah, no way." Sisu mumbles in wonder, hoping that this isn't just some temporary state of mind and what he said wasn't entirely true.
Ken looks at Raya with a tired, happy, and sad smile.
"Thank you Raya. I'm glad I can finally tell someone this. Who better than you, besides Sisu herself of course?"
Raya doesn't truly know if Ken is intentionally wanting to say all of this, but she's leaning towards no. Her mind trails over the events of the past hour. "What could have caused him to be in the state he's in?" She thinks back to those weird mushrooms they passed by earlier. "Maybe those? But didn't we avoid those?" She's not sure. All she knows is that he may need medical attention soon if that's the case. "This is possibly a high he's getting before something bad occurs." Her mind races through possibilities and outcomes she'd rather not allow to happen to her friend. She decides to hold her inner worry for now, and respond to Ken.
"You're welcome. I'm glad too. This is what friends are supposed to do. You, Sisu, and I are a team. Remember that okay?" She smiles.
"O-Ok." Ken smiles back, his eyes getting heavier.
He suddenly feels very woozy and his balance starts to get away from him. Raya starts to become worried again.
"Ken, are you okay?" She asks, trying to keep him on his feet.
"I-I think...so..." Ken suddenly collapses to the ground from Raya's hold, and he seems to be out cold.
Sisu immediately abandons her hiding spot and wastes zero time in coming to his aid.
"Ken!" They both yell in unison.
Raya looks over and is shocked to see her dragon friend beside her.
"Sisu!? How long have you been here?"
Sisu smiles and blushes slightly.
"Well, long enough to hear some conversation."
Raya smiles and shakes her head before becoming serious again.
"We need to hurry and get Ken back to the village. I think he inhaled something from a mushroom we passed earlier. I hope it's not lethal."
Sisu's eyes widen.
"So that's why he's been acting so weird and drunk? Poisonous mushrooms?" Sisu audibly wonders.
Raya leans down to check his pulse. After confirming he's still at least breathing, she looks back at Sisu.
"He's still breathing thankfully." She assures. Sisu let's out a small breath of relief.
"...Well what are we waiting for!? Hop on! I can't let my boyfriend die already!"
Sisu scoops Ken's limp form into her arms before awkwardly tossing him onto her slender back. She allows Raya to get on as well by lowering herself slightly.
"Oh? Boyfriend?" Raya asks teasingly.
"Well...um...he's my friend that's...a boy or...Whatever just get on Raya, we gotta go!" Sisu stumbles nervously, amusing Raya as she laughs to herself while getting on Sisu.
"You two are honestly perfect for eacho-"
Sisu launches into the night sky with a burst of speed, stopping what Raya was going to say, and rushes to their destination. Almost causing her friend to fall off in the process.
...
What happened?
...
Where am I? Did I fall asleep?
...
Ken begins to wake up from his dreamless sleep.
"Ah..my head..." Ken mumbles before slowly opening his eyes.
Am I in...the nursery?
He turns his head and observes his surroundings. His vision is blurry, but clearing up. He then realizes he's in one of the beds, not too far from the entrance. The events of yesterday start to come back to him.
"The forest. Raya. We were walking..." Ken mumbles as he looks up at the ceiling and recalls any memory.
"And you passed out. So Sisu and I had to rush you back here to see if you were okay. And it looks like you're fine. Thankfully, the nurse said it wasn't anything bad and one of the side effects from those weird mushrooms involved your sudden crash." Raya explains, walking from the entrance toward him.
Ken smiles at the sight of his friend.
"Well, thank you..and Sisu."
Raya smiles as well.
"You're welcome. Hey uh...do you remember anything from last night? At all?" She asks, raising her eyebrow.
"No..not really. Why?"
Raya chuckles nervously and looks away while scratching the back of her neck.
"Oh, nothing. No reason, just curious."
"You were pretty drunk actually. Or, at least you acted like it. Kinda funny honestly." Sisu says as she walks into the room as well. The doorway is large enough for her to just barely fit through.
If anything could wake Ken at attention, it's the sight of his beautiful crush. Almost instantly awake now, he quickly leans up to a sitting position while still in the bed.
"S-Sisu. Umm...Hi." Ken says as a rush of butterflies hits his gut with force.
Raya and Sisu chuckle at his subtle reaction.
"Oh uh, thank you for-for saving me." He quickly adds.
"No problem. Although, Raya should probably get the most credit. I just hung around in the bushes for a while." Sisu explains and Raya nods her head in agreement.
Raya and Sisu look at each other for a moment before looking back toward Ken.
"I'll leave you two alone. I'll just be outside." Raya points to the door before smiling at Sisu and walking out. Ken mentally questions why Raya would just leave him and Sisu alone all of the sudden, but he drops the thought when his eyes land on her again.
Sisu turns back around toward Ken and meets his eyes. For a moment, they stare in silence. After a few seconds though, Ken breaks eye contact before speaking.
"S-so uh...you said I acted like I was drunk or something?" Ken asks, getting back to the previous subject.
Sisu chuckles as she thinks back to the showing of his silly side.
"Right. Yeah, you really did. It was because of some weird effects from a mushroom or something. But I'm really glad you're okay. We were honestly worried."
"Wow, this is a story to tell for sure." Ken chuckles.
"Say uh, do you remember saying anything at all?" Sisu asks out of curiosity.
"No? I don't think so. At least not much before passing out. Raya asked me the same question. Did I say something really bad? I'm sorry if I did, even if I was kinda out of my head."
Ken begins to feel a little anxiety from the thoughts of what he could've said. Was it bad enough to break their friendship? He sure hopes not. Or was it something really embarrassing. "Did I...tell her?..." He wonders, not wanting the truth of such audacity.
"No, no! Not at all. It was actually...quite the opposite." Sisu assures.
Ken feels slightly less worried, but still concerned.
"Well um, that's good. What exactly did I say?"
Sisu forms an uncontrollable grin almost immediately. She fails to stifle multiple giggles and she begins to blush, not that Ken could really notice under her fur. She noticeably has a new sparkle in her eye, one Ken hasn't seen before. He can swear she's glowing all of the sudden.
He looks at Sisu with slight worry, and his heart beats faster at the sight.
"Well, Ken. Let's just say...you kind of...expressed your love for me."
Ken's mind does an entire loopty loop and his heart sinks into his stomach. Now it's Sisu's turn to worry, seeing him cover his face in sheer embarrassment and mumble inaudible regrets.
"I'm so dumb. I'm really sorry Sisu. It's fine if you don't want to see me anymore, I understand. I'm sorry, I'm so weird and stupid." Ken mumbles quickly behind his hands, loud enough that Sisu can hear.
Sisu shakes her head at the upsetting scene.
Wow, he has no idea. She thinks to herself.
She calmly approaches him before gently taking his wrists and prying open his hand shield, revealing eyes of regret and guilt.
"Sisu, I-" She cuts him off with her paw to his lips.
"Hey, it's okay." She removes her paw and moves back before continuing. "You only said the most beautiful things anyone has ever said about me. You said that I was...gorgeous...stunning, majestic...freaking majestic." She repeats excitedly. "You said that you want nothing more than for me to be happy. That you cherish every moment around me. And you think about me...all the time. You dream about me...all the time. Ken," She feels herself getting emotional with every word. "What you said really, really touched me. Those aren't things you just say to anyone without meaning it. I want you to know that. To understand that."
Ken looks into the dragonesses large violet eyes. Her expression and emotion clear as day, and there's no way he can confuse it. After hearing the complete opposite of what he expected, all he can do is stare back at Sisu with blank disbelief and attempt to process what he never imagined he would hear from his crush. He no longer hides his face, too busy getting lost in her aura.
"...what?" he quietly asks after several moments.
Sisu chuckles before slowly approaching her completely frozen friend. His expression never changes and he's confused of why. He should be hiding himself in a corner somewhere in shame despite what Sisu just told him. But he can't move. His heart races as Sisu places her paw over his cheek and gently caresses it. That trance he dreams about makes it's appearance as he loses himself in her eyes.
"To put it shorter Ken, I want to be your girlfriend. I like you, a lot."
Ken's eyes go wide, confirming his ears are not deceiving him.
"...You...really?" Ken asks, really hoping he's not just dreaming again.
Sisu stares into his eyes for a moment before gently kissing his forehead.
"Yes Ken, really. I think you're a pretty cool guy."
Ken sits there, as a smile reaches his face. A silly one at that, similar to what he had yesterday. This causes Sisu to giggle, happy to get this reaction out of him. Although he's still very frozen, this is enough for her.
"...wow..." He says quietly.
"Yeah. Wow." Sisu says before planting more affection to his forehead.
Raya smiles proudly as she peeks from the doorway.
