The bell rang loudly throughout the halls of Hollywood Arts, announcing the end of the school day for the faculty and students. Everyone was eager to enjoy the three-day weekend and were quickly filing out of their rooms to gather their belongings and get to their cars as quickly as possible but for Tori, she was trying to catch her girlfriend before she dashed out of the school. The past week had been miserable for her as Trina was a constant pain and her parents were away, leaving her alone to deal with her. On top of that, Jade wasn't talking to her after their most recent argument and was refusing to even look at her now which was slowly breaking the young woman's heart. This week alone Jade had canceled two dates they had planned previously and used a lack-luster excuse about working on a script or needing to help Cat. Both of which were lies but Tori wasn't going to call her out on it for fear of adding more fuel to the fire.
"Jade wait!" Tori called out as she pushed past a couple of underclassmen to catch her at her locker. Jade stood there with an annoyed glare on her face as she glanced at Tori and went back to grabbing her books. "Jade! Hey, look I'm sorry okay! If this is about that guy at the coffee shop on Monday, I'm sorry. For the last time, he was an old friend from my last school, you don't need to get all jealous abo—"
"I'm not jealous!" Jade screamed as she looked at her. She closed her locker almost completely and turned to Tori and said, "I don't get jealous. I'm just pissed that my girlfriend finds it fun to flirt and show off her giant ass to every guy that'll give her the time of day!"
"Hey! My butt isn't that big and I wasn't showing it off!" Tori protested. "I don't even know what you're talking about! I hugged him, asked how classes were then grabbed our drinks and we left! There was no flirting!"
Jade rolled her eyes and then put on a bright smile and looked off in the distance with a dreamy look in her eyes as she said in her southern voice, "Oh why yes! It has been a while, hasn't it? Oh, I'm doing just peachy! You're doing well for yourself; I can see the days on the farm are really paying off. Oh, excuse me," she then turned and opened her locker fully and grabbed her keys but as she did so, she stuck her hip out a little and bumped Tori back before turning to her, "Oh excuse me. Didn't mean to bump into you. I really must be going now. Toodles!"
"I don't talk like that!" Tori yelled back as she followed Jade out of the school and into the parking lot. "And, more importantly, I didn't do that at all! I said bye to him and then left with you! I didn't show off or flirt or anything! Why can't you just trust me?!"
Jade stopped as she got to her car and said to Tori, "Oh don't be so naïve Vega! He was checking you out! His eyes were practically glued to your ass and you just had to show it off for him. If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were looking for a fallback so you can ditch me!"
"How can you even say that?!" Tori said as looked at Jade with a stunned and hurt expression. "We've been together almost two years and you think I just wanna throw all that away?! Why would you think I was going to dump you?! You're my girlfriend, I love you! I thought we were on the same—"
"Tori!"
Both girls glanced back towards the doors and saw Trina quickly approaching them, stomping past several other students that were lingering in the parking lot. She looked angry and her gaze was fixed on her sister who let out an annoyed groan and said, "What Trina? Can't this wait? Jade and I were talking."
Trina didn't respond as she approached them, instead, she reached into Tori's back pocket and pulled out her Pearphone and held it in front of her face, and said, "Get your freaking phone fixed already! It's bad enough you broke it but now you keep butt dialing me! I don't want to hear about your relationship problems as it is, and I really don't want to hear it muffled in your back pocket!"
Tori snatched the phone and hit the end call button with a blush creeping across her caramel skin as she said, "I'm getting it fixed! They couldn't fit me in until Sunday, okay?!"
"Just take the phone out of your pocket and keep it in that thing you call a purse!" Trina said as she held her hands together and pointed to the massive bag hanging off of Tori's shoulder. "This is like the eighth time this week you've called me because of your big butt, so do me a favor and keep your phone away from there!"
"Will you all stop talking about my butt?! It's not that big!" She said with an annoyed groan as she looked between the two of them, but she quickly saw that Jade was no longer next to her. Instead, she was tossing her bag into the backseat of her car and slammed it shut before getting into the driver's seat and turning the key. "Jade wait!"
The paled-skinned woman looked through the window and just said, "We'll finish this later."
Without another word, she pulled out of the parking spot, cutting off another student who was driving, and went straight for the exit, then sped off down the road and out of sight. Tori stood there feeling hurt and angry and shook her head before turning and brushing past Trina and grumbled, "Can we just go home now?"
Trina didn't argue with her and followed along and drove the two of them home in silence. She let the radio play but after two songs and not a single note sung by her sister, she knew that this fight was bothering her far more than usual and turned it off. When they got home, Tori rushed up to her room and closed the door without a word leaving Trina alone downstairs to work on some of the small tasks given to her by Lane for her assistant teaching position but after not being able to focus, she gave up and resigned herself to watching tv for the evening.
It wasn't until the late evening when Tori came downstairs and tried to quickly go to the kitchen for a snack and retreat to the solitude of her room but Trina could instantly tell that there was more going on and had to intervene. Instead of her usual comfy pajamas or some rock and roll t-shirt that she was borrowing from Jade, she was instead wearing dark purple sweatpants and an oversized black hoodie. She was wearing her glasses and her hair was a tangled mess. When she glanced over towards the couch to look at Trina, she revealed that her eyes were red and puffy, most likely from crying.
"Okay, that's it," Trina said as she turned off the tv and tossed the remote aside. Tori paused on her way up the stairs and watched as Trina went over to the counter and grabbed her car keys and then went for the door and casually said, "I'm gonna go kick that witch's ass! Don't wait up!"
"Wait, what?" Tori asked as she set her glass down on the piano and rushed after Trina. She managed to grab her by the wrist and pull her in and close the door while Trina protested and tried to break away.
"Tori! Let go! I'm going to go show her not to mess with a Vega!" Trina said as she tried to walk around Tori, only to be cut off as she sidestepped into her path. "Why are you defending her?"
"Why are you trying to hurt her?" Tori said, throwing her hands out to her sides, still demanding an explanation for the surprise war declaration Trina was about to send. "Where is this coming from?"
"Where is this coming from? Where is this coming from?" Trina repeated, her eyes wide and her mouth open in disbelief. She tossed the keys onto the table behind her and turned back to Tori and started to count on her fingers as she said, "Prome, Yerba, the music awards show, the stunt double fiasco, the fake black eye! Do I need to keep going?"
"What does any of that have to do with this?" Tori asked.
"What does it have to do—Tori! This is because Jade is a horrible, twisted and manipulative gank! I fully support your lifestyle and will always have your back, but I can't let you cry your eyes out over someone who is just gonna hurt you over and over again."
"It's fine, we've buried that hatchet a long time ago! She loves me! She just has a hard time expressing it," Tori said as she led Trina over to the couch and sat down.
Trina sat next to her and said with a pointed glare, "She didn't seem to have a hard time showing it with Beck when they were together."
THUNK!
Jade winced momentarily as the dart sunk into the wood lining the dartboard in the trailer wall and walked over and pulled it out, along with the other five, and returned to her original spot before attempting to throw them again. Beck glanced up from the magazine he was reading and said, "Do you wanna talk about it now?"
"No," Jade said coldly as she threw the first dart and grimaced as it hit far off from the center. She had shown up at Beck's trailer a couple of hours ago and walked inside as soon as the door was open. This wasn't the first time she had come by, almost every time she had something weighing on her mind, she would come back to this place to try to distract herself. Beck rolled his eyes and closed the magazine and set it aside before walking over and taking the darts from her hands. He pointed to the couch but Jade cut him off and said, "No!"
"Yes," he placed a hand on her shoulder and guided her to the couch and sat down next to her, and said, "Talk."
"There's nothing to talk about," Jade stated flatly as she leaned back and crossed her arms and legs.
"Then why are you here instead of being with your girlfriend?" Beck asked, even though they both knew the answer.
Jade looked at him like she was ready to slap him but relented when he raised his eyebrows and nudged her shoulder. "Come on, best friends talk about relationships. So, talk, what's going on?"
"There should be a rule that exes can't be friends, it would make things so much easier," She said but after a moment of silence she finally relented, "I got jealous again and messed things up."
"That much I knew already," Beck said as he sat back and fiddled with one of the darts. "You were acting so cold towards Tori and everyone else that I'm surprised no one got pneumonia."
Jade glared at him and gave him a jab to the side which made him laugh as he winced through the initial pain and said, "There we go, now you're starting to crack. So, what's really going on?"
"Why did you put up with me? I was terrible to you, I kept getting jealous over everything," she quickly said as she looked at him, searching his eyes for some sort of answer. "Why stay?"
"Well, it's not like I was the best boyfriend ever, I messed up and made mistakes too. But," he said as he tapped her shoulder and pointed to the floor where her bag was with her phone sticking out and vibrating with Tori's name displayed across the screen, "I'm willing to bet, it's for the same reason she does it too."
Jade sat there with a distant look in her eye as the phone continued to ring. Beck got up and snatched it out of the bag and held his hand out, holding Jade back from taking the phone from his grasp. "Tori! Tori! Come on! I didn't mean it like that!"
Both of them stopped moving and looked at the phone curiously and looked at one another. The voices were muffled like the phone held far away from their sources. Beck pulled the phone between the two of them as they sat down and listened in on the argument. Jade leaned in and held her hands together over her lips, intently listening to Tori.
"Tori please, hear me out!"
"No!" Tori yelled as she yanked her hand out of Trina's grasp and started to ascend the stairs. At the top step, she turned and continued, "I can take a lot of things Trina, but insulting the woman I love is too far and you know that! Just because Jade doesn't fawn over me or show it in public, doesn't mean she loves me any less! You don't get to see the sides of her that I do! She is the best thing that has ever happened to me!"
Trina looked up at her and said, "Tori, I'm trying to look out for you! You can't act like she's flawless! People call her a gank and an ice queen for a reason! She's vicious!"
The elder Vega sister rubbed her temples as she groaned and walked back to the couch and said, "I just don't get it," turning back to Tori who started to follow after her, "why stick around her? Why put up with her when she's so mean? I've seen you over the past two years, practically tear your heart out for her and she doesn't do the same for you! That's not fair and I don't want you to look back later in life and realize you wasted your time with a loveless relationship!"
"Trina," Tori said as she fixed her glasses and guided her sister over to the couch, "I know you're looking out for me. Trust me on this, Jade is so much more than what she appears."
She sat down and smiled faintly as she thought back to their first kiss, how Jade walked with her in the park hand in hand and brought her to a viewing platform that oversaw the beach at sundown. Tori had broken away from her to get a picture of the scenery and noticed that Jade stayed back, looking at her with a conflicted expression. When she finally asked what was wrong, Jade strode towards her and cupped her cheeks, and pulled her in for a kiss. Tori was stunned at first but melted into it easily. It was awkward at first for them, but as Tori let her walls down and wrapped her arms around Jade's shoulders, that seemed to be the assurance the young writer needed. When they finally broke apart, Jade rested her forehead against Tori's and looked at her with hope and uncertainty before finally asking her to make the relationship official. In those rich blue-green eyes, she showed her vulnerability and took the leap of faith asking Tori to be hers. Tori's response was to squeeze her even tighter in her arms as she leaned in and kissed her again and again.
"She's my everything," Tori said softly. "She isn't the nicest in the world, but she sees it in such a unique way that I can't help but feel compelled to follow after her. She's a complex mystery that is hidden amongst so many layers and I love being the one to solve it. We balance each other out and teach each other what we're missing in life. People always call her dark and brooding while I'm this happy ray of sunshine, and if that's the case, then we're kind of perfect for each other. It's not perfect all the time, but it's worth it in the end."
She looked and saw Trina was taking in every word she said and processing it slowly before continuing to say, "I'm not like her in so many ways. I jump before looking, I trust way too easy, and I can't think of things in the long term. But with her? She makes me do those things and forces me out of my comfort zone. She tempers the sunlight with her shadows."
"I-I didn't know you felt so strongly about her," Trina said as she took one of Tori's hands and squeezed it softly.
Tori smiled and nodded and said, "I love her. I know you may not like her, but she does make me happy. She is the reason I'm happy."
Trina pulled Tori in for a hug and said, "That's all I want for you," Tori hugged her back and smiled for a moment before she continued, "But if she ever does break your heart, I'm kicking her ass."
The younger Vega laughed before breaking away and wiping a tear and said, "I wouldn't expect anything less."
"Come on, go grab some popcorn or something and let's watch a movie," Trina said as she ruffled Tori's already disheveled hair.
Tori swatted her hand away and got up to retrieve everything while Trina sat back and started to look for a movie before looking at her phone as it went off.
Ice Queen: Keep her distracted. I need to set up a surprise to apologize. Also, I'd like to see you try.
The text confused Trina at first before she glanced at Tori and noticed her phone half sticking out of her pocket with the screen lit up. She smirked and sent back a quick text saying she'd do it and put it aside as Tori came over and laid out the popcorn and some drinks. Together, the two of them sat close leaning against one another and started to watch the movie while across town, Jade enlisted Beck's help to do some late night shopping.
The ending credits scrolled across the screen briefly before the screen went blank and Tori set the remote aside. Trina was sprawled out on her side of the couch snoring softly and half the blanket draped over the floor. Being the responsible sister, Tori softly grabbed one of Trina's legs that were hanging off of the cushion and placed it back up, and covered her in the blanket before making her way upstairs with a yawn.
When she reached her door, she could hear soft music playing and a dim orange glow coming from underneath and spilling out across the hall. Her curiosity got the better of her and she opened the door to her room and found the window open, letting in a cool evening breeze and a small speaker set up with a phone playing music on the desk. On top of that, there were rose petals scattered all across the floor and the room was dimly illuminated by several candles stationed around the room. She stepped in and closed the door behind her before turning back to see Jade ducking in through the window with a grunt and landing inside. The pale-skinned woman looked up at her, surprised, and glanced down at her own hand and held out a large bar of chocolate and said, "I thought I'd have more time to set up."
"What is all of this for?" Tori asked curiously as she took the candy and set it on her nightstand.
Jade approached her and held her hands and said, "This…this is my apology. As much as I hate to admit, you make me crazy in all the right ways and I realized I was fucking all of that up. So, I wanted to apologize."
She looked up at her and said, "I'm not perfect. I never will be but for you, I want to be. You make me better in so many ways and I can't even find the words to convey how much you mean to me. I love you so much, Vega. I'm sorry for being such an ass."
Before her rehearsed speech could continue, Tori kissed her and fell back on the bed with her, pinning her underneath before breaking the kiss to say, "Apology accepted."
Jade smiled and ran a hand through Tori's hair and pulled her back down to kiss her and let her hands wander and explore her sides. Together they rolled over so they were laying on their sides, Tori's legs wrapped around Jade's as their kisses became more heated. Tori smirked while they made out as Jade reached around and cupped her butt, and gasped when she squeezed it. As Jade brought her hand away, she subtly pulled the phone out of Tori's pocket and said with a smirk while waving it teasingly, "Now let's put that ass of yours to the test."
Tori's cheeks burned bright red as Jade tossed the phone aside and pulled her back into a kiss, cutting off Tori from stammering out a response.
Author's Notes: Request/story idea from Invader Johnny
Hello everyone! As mentioned above this was an idea pitched by Invader Johnny about what if Tori butt dials Jade and she overhears a conversation about their relationship. I had a lot of fun writing this one and thought it would be a fun change of pace given how dark a lot of my other stories can be.
I plan on having more for you all soon including new chapters for my existing stories as well as several one shots I have planned! If you like the story, feel free to leave a review and let me know what you think! Your responses are what keep me going when I struggle to keep writing! Have a good day!
Songs Used for Inspiration:
1. The Story of Us- Taylor Swift
2. Ships in the Night-Mat Kearney
3. Always Remember Us This Way- Lady Gaga
Fun side note: I originally planned on having Tori sing that first song in a class an Jade overreacted thinking it was about them since they had a fight previously, but I ended up scrapping that original scene so I could focus on other elements.
