Flurry was tense during the whole way to Jade Mountain, she wasn't ready to spread her wings and leave her nest. I know, I know, that sounds like something a bird would say. But Flurry called it a nest.
She never really wanted to go to school either, as a matter of fact. But her mother, Queen Snowfall, had encouraged her to go out and make new friends. She sighed softly and blew a plume of frost as she continued flying with the other IceWings towards the Jade Mountain Academy.
"Well, we're here. Are you ready to go inside, Flurry?" Her mother asked her, in a gentle and loving tone of voice. Flurry shook her head, as she looked up at her mother with watery dark blue eyes.
"I don't want to go to the academy, mother. I want to stay with you. Do I have to go?" Flurry asked, curling her talons underneath her. Her mother wrapped a comforting wing around her shoulder as she spoke in a southing tone.
"I know it's scary to leave the nest and enter someplace new. But it's time for your journey to be begin, Flurry. It's time for you to spread your wings and fly. I know you'll find your way, you always do. Now C'mon, let's go inside." She said, and the two IceWings entered the mountain that had been carved into a school.
The entrance cave was already filled with dragons, some were adults while most were the dragonet students. Within the dimly lit cave many dragonets were walking towards different tables, picking up scrolls of information about their winglet placements and their daily schedules.
Tapping a talon on the ground, Flurry looked at the different tables set around the cave. Noticing one table that was not as crowded compared to the others, she decided to start there.
The dragon operating the table was a blue-green SeaWing dragon, probably the oldest dragon in the cave. He was handing out scrolls to the students in line, each dragonet looking eagerly at them. Once Flurry was third in line to receive a scroll, she looked at a sign on the table that read "Winglet Placements."
Moment of truth. Flurry thought as the dragonet ahead of her, a dark red SkyWing who carried herself with pride, almost like she was royalty. Maybe she was, but Flurry doubted she would be in the same winglet as a royal.
Stepping forward to receive her scroll, the SeaWing looked up at Flurry with a bored expression, but dutifully handed her a scroll.
"Thank you," Flurry said, nodding her head at the SeaWing. "Are you a teacher?"
"Yes," the SeaWing answered, raising a scaly brow at the IceWing as if he were not expecting such a question. "My name is Webs, the History instructor."
"Oh," Flurry answered, briefly deflating at the mention of history. It was not her least favorite topic... But she was not very strong at it. But Flurry corrected her attitude, maybe Webs was a good teacher? "Well, I can't wait for your class." She added.
Webs nodded, before gesturing Flurry to move as the MudWing behind her was waiting for his scroll.
Stepping off to the side, away from the table, Flurry sat on the ground to unravel her scroll.
Flurry quietly read its contents:
"WELCOME TO
THE JADE MOUNTAIN
ACADEMY!"
With that opening sentence, Flurry could not help but feel welcomed. After reading through the introductory paragraphs that told the reader what they would be learning at the academy, Flurry's eyes fell upon the desired contents of the scroll…
The Winglet placements.
Before reading, Flurry took a deep breath…
Here we go, time to find out who my clawmates will be for the next four years.
JADE WINGLET
IceWing: Sapphire
MudWing: Copper
NightWing: Nightheart
RainWing: Rainbow
SandWing: Sandstorm
SeaWing: Wave
SkyWing: Auburn
Well… Flurry had to admit, she was a little disappointed. Moon had been in the Jade Winglet during her years at the Academy along with Winter and Qibli. It would have been nice to see their reaction if she had been placed in Jade…
Oh well, maybe she was in the Gold Winglet?
GOLD WINGLET
IceWing: Snowstorm
MudWing: Swamp
NightWing: Dawn
RainWing: Jade
SandWing: Rattlesnake
SeaWing: Otter
SkyWing: Phoenix
Well… that's a nice group of dragonets. Flurry thought in amusement. She then read into the Silver placements.
SILVER WINGLET
IceWing: Iceberg
MudWing: Falcon
NightWing: Dusk
RainWing: Jaguar
SandWing: Viper
SeaWing: Hurricane
SkyWing: Inferno
Copper's not one of Flurry's favorite colors, but… oh well. Flurry thought to herself, with a shrug of her wings. She then read into the Copper placements.
COPPER WINGLET
IceWing: Aurora
MudWing: Russet
NightWing: Shadehunter
RainWing: Glorious
SandWing: Scorpion
SeaWing: Mako
SkyWing: Canyon
Well, at least she knew all of her friends had been put in a Winglet… but what about her? Flurry was starting to wonder if she had not even been accepted into the Academy. What if she was in someone else's place?!
Taking a gulp, Flurry continued to read into the Quartz placement…
QUARTZ WINGLET
IceWing: Flurry (Oh Three Moons! Thank you!)
MudWing: Amber
NightWing: Eclipse
RainWing: Summer
SandWing: Hyena
SeaWing: Tempest
SkyWing: Cynder
Relief washed over Flurry, thank goodness! She was not in someone else's place. While she may not have been in the Jade Winglet, she was still in one. And, if she might add, quartz was a pretty stone. So surely it was not that bad.
"You must be... Ermine, right?" Came a voice from behind Flurry, startling her and making her jump backwards in surprise.
"Oh, sorry. I didn't mean to startle you, silly IceWing." She said, with a small laugh. She nodded slowly and rolled up her scroll. "Can you please stop calling me silly IceWing?" Flurry quietly asked, and the SkyWing dragonet nodded her head and smiled brightly at her.
"Flurry," she corrected, though with a sincere smile and a nod of her head in greeting.
Before the SkyWing could introduce herself, Flurry was already speaking.
"Perhaps we could have introductions in our common cave?" Flurry asked as she pointed her tail in the direction of the hallway where the Winglet's common caves were located.
The SkyWing nodded and followed Flurry as she led the way to the Quartz Winglet's common cave. "The name's Cynder," the SkyWing dragonet said, introducing herself to Flurry as they kept on walking.
The Quartz Winglet's common cave was circular in shape. In the center of the cave was a fire pit, with seven cushions circled a safe distance. Along the walls were storage containers and book shelves, all for the winglet's personal use. The cave was also connected to three smaller caves, where the winglet, Flurry correctly assumed, would sleep.
Being the first to arrive, the two decided to unpack in one of the sleeping caves and chose the center one, which was Whirlwind's suggestion but Flurry was fine with the idea since no one else had chosen it.
Cynder shook her head, as she slid the carrying bag off of her neck and proceeded to throw it on one of the three sleeping areas... only for a loud shout of protest to originate from said platform, causing both dragonets to jump in surprise as a blue scaled RainWing with pink spots across her body suddenly de-camouflaged and sent Cynder's bag and scrolls flying off of her.
"Hey, watch where you're going!" Said the RainWing, shaking her wings and glaring at Whirlwind, pink frills around her neck briefly flaring up. "Didn't you see me taking a nap there, SkyWing?"
Cynder and Flurry, recovering from their shock, glance at one another, each wondering if the other had seen said RainWing on the bed. Flurry shook her head at Cynder, she was certain the RainWing was camouflaged, causing the princess look back at the RainWing.
"Well maybe you shouldn't sleep while invisible," the SkyWing princess countered, annoyed at the RainWing's words.
"She means sorry," Flurry offered, not wanting her two clawmates to argue literally only a half an hour after arriving to the school.
"She should be!" Snapped the RainWing in an irritated manner. "Who do you think you are, the Princess of the Sky Kingdom?" She sneered at Cynder... not knowing the irony.
Flurry glanced at Cynder, whose face brightens into a confident smirk as she stairs at the RainWing.
"Umm... funny story..." Flurry says, but pauses as the RainWing looks back at Cynder, the latter giving a confident smirk as she saw the RainWing connect the dots.
The RainWing frowned deeply, before it clicked and she blinked in surprise. "Oh... oh... oh!" She exclaimed, staring at Cynder.
And just when it looked like to Flurry the RainWing was going to apologize…
"I'm still not apologizing though," she said dryly, laying back down on the bed. "And you're not getting this bed."
Cynder, briefly taken a back, quickly recomposed herself from the sudden change of events and picks up her bag and scrolls.
"That's fine," Cynder answers, unyielding, as she places her things on a different bed on the opposite side of the corner. "I wasn't interested in that bed anyways. This one suits me." Though Flurry could tell Cynder actually still wanted the bed the RainWing was on, but wanted to appear like the bed was too lowly for her.
The RainWing scoffed.
"Sure you are," she replied, stretching herself before looking at the two more closely.
"Either way... the name's Summer." She introduced herself. "Now, unless Queen Ruby got another dragonet, I'm guessing you must be Cynder and… you are?" She questioned, tilting her head to the side as she stared at Flurry.
"...Flurry, wasn't it?" Summer said, which Flurry nodded at the question.
"Yeah," She answered, blinking in surprise as she stared at the RainWing dragonet with wide icy-blue eyes. "How'd you know?"
"Just a guess... ok fine... I looked at the scroll and saw the name 'Flurry' written in the place of the IceWing member of the Quartz Winglet."
"I like to plant flowers and different kinds of fruit," Flurry explained, glancing over at the other two dragonets as she patted her traveling bag, one pocket had strawberries in it. "I really enjoy planting strawberries," she added as she stared up at Summer. "Hope there's a place here I can plant these..."
It would be a shame if there was not a place to grow them…
"The Academy has some fertile growing spots." Came a new voice from the entrance of the sleeping cave.
The three dragonets looked to see a SeaWing about their age walk in. With her scales a light blue, aqua green wing membranes and eyes. Flurry couldn't deny she looked pretty. Her calm gaze and demeanor also relieved Flurry, and maybe not all of her clawmates would bicker?
"You must be... Hurricane, right?" Cynder asked, the first to recover from the appearance of the new arrival.
"Tempest," she corrected, though with a sincere smile and a nod of her head in greeting.
Before Flurry could introduce herself, Tempest was already speaking.
"Perhaps we could have introductions in there?" Tempest asked as she pointed her tail out to the common cave. Flurry could just barely see someone sitting on a cushion reading a scroll.
Flurry, along with Cynder and Summer, nodded as the three followed Tempest outside to where the other dragonet was sitting.
