A Witch does not whine, a witch does not make excuses...A witch makes things happen. Katherine knows what her mother expects from her but being a witch is the last thing she wants to be.
Note: So many ideas are running thru my head. Just trying this out ..I do not own the rights. Kind of fixed things.
The sun was shinning bright on a young girl that was laying down near the pond. Her blonde hair glistened in the sunlight as her eyes were closed enjoying the noise from the bugs. The heat from the sun warmed her skin.
"Katherine" called Esmeralda Hallow. She was also a third year at Cackles Academy, her yellow sash was perfect with the stones showing everyone around, she was head girl. The youthful witch that stood over Katherine had her hair in the traditional manner for Cackles Academy, up and out of her face. Katherine never moved from laying down but her eyes opened . Her sapphire eyes looking straight at the sky never fell upon Esemerelda's face. She didn't want to move, getting up meant that the new term was starting. Something that Katherine was not ready to accept.
"I don't want to go" Katherine's words were soft with truth behind them. Katherine didn't want to be at Cackles, it was tradition though. The young witch sat up not caring that her uniform now smelled like the earth. She knew her mother would disapprove of the smell. Katherine knew if her mother found out she was laying by the pond and not getting ready for term, she would get a lecture. Now her father, her dad would encourage the relaxing time.
"We must go, to check in...no one has noticed you are late"
"Really" Katherine was surprised, most tardy errors were noticed and frowned upon. Esmerelda nodded with a soft chuckle. Tardinesse is the first step to being lazy She could hear her mother saying those exact words to her.
"Everyone is chatting about the incident a week ago. How the new year one girl, Mildred Hubble..." Esmerelda trailed off as Katherine slowly stood up. She was not tall but petite, her light blonde hair fell pass her shoulders, fair skin with no blemish, but her pink lips did not show a single smile. The the name Esmeralda said seemed a bit odd.
Instead Katherine rose a brow "Hubble" was all she said as Esmerelda informed her of the gossip going around the castle. It was a lot of information, nonmagical girl who has magic, failed test, stole from Ethel's test, Agatha Cackle. So much information Katherine was hearing that she couldn't imagine any more crazy things going on this year.
The pair walked thru the great doors, up the stairs, and toward the back where the girls rooms were located. Katherine enjoyed Esmerelda's company. She was the smartest witch but also the most humble. Even with her speaking about how Mildred stole from her sister's potion, she never spoke ill of Mildred.
Katherine entered her room and looked around, she was back, back for another term.
The morning came quickly, Katherine slowly got dressed leaving her blonde hair down as she made her way to the great hall for breakfast. She noticed it was Ms. Bat's duty to walk around to make sure all rules were being followed. Esmerelda had a spot saved for Katherine, so the blonde made her way to her friend. Other witches were smiling and greeting her but she always sat with Esmerelda.
"Does your sister like it so far" Katherine asked while stiring the porridge that she had no desire to consume. Esmerelda shrugged "I believe so, she's just...trying to push herself to be the best"
"She does have big shoes to fill" Katherine said honestly. Every witch did, even Katherine struggled to keep up with her own friend. Esmerelda rolled her brown eyes and made a gesture to her own head.
Katherine laughed "I don't want wear it up" she winked. She wanted to be free for a moment, free from the rules.
Katherine watched an excited first year enter the hall and sit at a table across from theirs. She was full of ethemsatic like a child on Christmas morning. "Is that Hubble" Katherine asked.
Before Esmerelda could speak another first year witch sat at their table. Her hair was slick back in a high ponytail. Her posture and attitude was pure confidence with herself as a witch.
"Yes...and nothing but trouble" the first year sneered.
"Ethel" Esmerelda hissed at her younger sister.
"Well aren't you a little something" Katherine laughed looking at Ethel. "Calling her trouble when she came here with no true invite I hear"
"Yes, she even messed up my potion" Ethel added rolling her eyes before taking a bite of the stale porridge. "She isn't a witch" she added after her bite.
"Really...she's not even a witch" Katherine said sarcastically repeating Ethel, as she watched the girl chipper away to whom she was assuming was her best friend. Standing up with her tray Katherine was making her way to empty the full remains. Katherine looked around to make sure Ms. Tapioca was not watching. Throwing away uneaten food would definitely make the woman yell and throw a fit. She was in the clear this time, after she emptied the porridge Katherine hurried out of the dining area. Chanting was her first class, so she made her way down the corridor.
BAM
She felt her body hit the desk as a girl fell next to her.
"Sorry" said the Hubble girl as Katherine tried to catch her balance. She wasn't use to being slammed into things that she wasn't expecting the inn table to collapse when she hit it.
Both girls were on the floor as Mrs. Cackle appeared before them. The headmistress had a soft smile and eyes were soft with care
"Are you alright" she asked. The girls nodded as Mildred started to apologize nonstop. The headmistress assured everything was fine before vanishing off the mess the girls made.
"I see you met Mildred" Ms. Cackle said now smiling at Katherine.
"Yes Ms. Cackle" Katherine said looking at the first year. Her blue eyes fell down at the girls socks. One was not pulled up all the way, her hair was a mess...Katherine looked back at Ms. Cackle. She was surprised the girl who saved the school was such a cluts.
"Good...Mildred it's time for your flying lessons and if I'm not mistaken Katherine...it is" the headmistress stopped speaking trying to think.
"Chanting" Katherine said finishing up the statement. She had known Ms. Cackle her whole life, one of the most well respected and kind witch around, but the headmistress seemed a bit preoccupied with the first year. Mildred and Ms. Cackle walked off chatting, leaving Katherine behind. She watched for a moment then realized she was late for her lesson.
Chanting, SpellScience, PE all of the classes felt long. Katherine sat across from her cauldron ready for potions. As a third year, it was required to make up a spell. A huge project and first major grade of the semester, similar to what they did as second years. No one in class was late, a pupil knew better then to be late to potions.
A black figure appeared from nothing, her brown eyes looked around the room as her red lips moved "Good afternoon class"
Katherine mimicked the rest of her fellow classmates "Good afternoon Ms. Hardbroom"
The deputy headmistress smirked at year three as Katherine and the others looked straight at one of the powerful witches in the school. Her figure was slender, dress black as night with a corset hugging her mid area. Hardbroom was stern and not a witch you cross.
"The project papers out" and with a flick to Ms. Hardbrooms wrist the assignment was picked up. One by one the project was presented as Hardbroom sat and watched.
"Katherine Northman"
She heard her name. Making her way to the front of the class, she watched as her paper appeared infront of her, everyone was on the edge of their seat. Esmerelda flashed her a genuine warm smile. Taking a deep breath Katherine looked straight ahead eyes upon Esemerelda.
"My project...is um" she started to get nervous as her blue eyes landed on Hardbroom. It was one thing to practice alone in her room, but standing in front of Hardbroom and everyone else. Katherine's stomach turned from feeling anxious.
"We do not...have all day...Katherine...unless your potion spell is to regain time we are wasting...I suggest you hurry...it...up"
Katherine knew Hardbroom didnt have patients when it came to people wasting her time. She gulped before continuing.
"Right...well, this break I was thinking...could we show our magic to nonmagicals"
"Stop at once" Hardbroom commanded. Her eyes were narrow staring straight at the blonde.
"I...I wasn't finished" Katherine whispered. But seeing Hardbroom this upset she was terrified. Her heart felt like it skipped a beat as their eyes locked onto one another.
"The witches code forbids it...tell me Katherine...did you perform magic infront of a nonmagicals" her words were firm as Katherine watched the potion teacher take a step toward her with each word. She never glanced at her fellow pupils, everyone was still making sure not to make a sound.
"You...are... not letting me finish" she gained her confidence toward the end. Katherine didn't believe she did anything wrong. Hardbroom was not listening to the full presentation.
"Cackle's office now"
And with that she was vanished to the headmistress. Katherine held her tears back, she felt like a fool infront of her classmates.
"Come in" the warm voice invited her in.
Katherine walked in the familiar area before taking a seat before Ada Cackle.
"Dear, what's the trouble" she asked.
"Potions project, she didn't even let me finish. she assumed I broke the witches code" Katherine had to stop since she felt a lump in her throat. She felt mortified, she knew it happened to others. She witnessed Hardbroom send students into tears, but she tried. Katherine always tried to stay clear from her. To do the best she could, of course she was no Esmeralda, but something wasn't right. It was the moment she said nonmagical and magic in the same sentence, Hardbroom became the monster so many pupils claimed she was.
Ms. Cackle's warm gaze was fixed upon Katherine "tell me child what was your project. I'm all ears"
Katherine explained, she told her about the rose glasses she made. The potions would allow the subject wearing them to accept the unthinkable but when taken off to forget. It wasn't a fancy project like some of the other classmates. But it did at least deserve a passing grade. Looking down at her folder that she was reading from she noticed Hardbroom graded the project. It recieved a D. That was her first grade lower than a B. She was now fuming, the woman never even listened to her explain.
Ada Cackle nodded her head "I know you worked hard...I can not change her views Katherine" her words were firm yet soft. Katherine knew how much the two were close, Ada and Hardbroom were each others friend. She bit her bottom lip not looking up when a stern cold voice spoke.
"Did your father know about your project" Hardbroom asked. Her arms crossed against her chest, eyes glaring down. Katherine kept her gaze down she could feel that both adults were now staring at her.
"Yes" she lied.
"Liar...Katherine...I am disgusted with this behavior...did he really know. Because I will ring him and ask myself"
She knew the hole she was digging herself into, she shouldn't of lied but Katherine was scared. She had not been fussed like this in over three years. Katherine knew her father would disapprove of the project because it was a bit rushed, but he would not have lost his mind over it.
"1,000 lines...I shall not lie...and you can write a ten page essay on the reason why we do not make items so nonmagical people can know we exist"
"Mum" Katherine whined. Hearing the punishment before she could even plea her case felt unfair. She already was struggling to keep up with her studies she couldn't possibly do this as well. Ms. Cackle's gaze was upon her and she never spoke up, never said the punishment was harsh. Katherine looked at her Headmistress, she wasn't shocked that Ada was siding with her mother. The friendship these two women had was strong. Ada would defend her as a student, but if Hardbroom was being her mother, Ada stayed out of it.
Hardbrooms posture had become stiff as the word mum left Katherine's lips. Everyone knew about their relationship, even if the last names were different. Katherine had taken her father's name as a child.
"Witches do not...whine about the consequences they brought upon themselves" she hissed at her daughter. Katherine nodded obediently. Her eyes were on her Mothers black heels not looking up. Her mouth was pressed shut keeping any noise at bay.
"Next time I see you, your hair...up"Hardbroom added before Katherine was told to leave. The fifteen year old walked out of the office fighting back tears. She had no idea how she was going to study and complete the punish work in a timely manner. The lie was wrong but Katherine walked up the steps sulking about the project. She truly had just wanted to do it on a world that she found interesting. Up the stairs she saw Mildred sitting on a step.
"You ok" Hubble asked Katherine.
"I will be" Katherine replied with tears streaming from her face before leaving the witch to return to her own quarters. She could hear footsteps behind her. Mildred was following.
"You are sure" she asked. Katherine didn't answer right away but stopped at her bedroom door.
"I have a lot to do rig..." she trailed off. "How did you find out about this school" she started to wipe her tears away.
Mildred shrugged smiling "Long story...but luck I guess"
Katherine rose a brow and let out a small laugh. Being away from Hardbroom, she had regained her confidence. "Well...you will need it"
She entered her room leaving Mildred on the outside so she could start on her punish work. All she needed to do was survive this school year, stay out of trouble like she did the two years prior. It could not get worst then this she thought.
Sitting at her desk she made a paper appear as she began to write her lines. Tears poured again from her eyes, she didn't want to be here. With every word written Katherine sobbed. By the time she was done with the lines darkness had taken over the sky. Her puffy red eyes looked out the window toward the forest. It was a white creature that caught her attention. She could tell from afar that it was a wolf, it was beautiful and majestic as it walked the land. The stone wall was keeping the creature from entering. Katherine could of sworn the wolf looked at her, the eyes were focused in her direction before it let out the usual howl the pupils would hear thru out the night.
"Lights out" the usual night call from the teachers were being said. Hardbroom had opened Katherine's door looking at the puffy eye girl. Katherine turned the lamp off before making her way to her cot. Her mother never spoke a word to her before closing the door. Katherine sat in the darkness and completely forgot about the wolf as sleepiness took over her body
