It took a full week for Katherine to finish the punish work given to her. The blonde hair pupil grabbed the papers as her high ponytail swayed side to side with each step. She had been on her best behavior for the whole week, trying to earn her outside privileges again. When you had punish work, outside privileges were revoked until everything was complete and done.
She entered the potion class. The wooden tables were filled with first years, they were chatting among one another as they followed instructions for the potion assignment for a transformation spell. Looking around she didn't see her mother anywhere so she placed the papers on the desk.
"Just because you are in this school, Mildred Hubble, does not make you a witch" Katherine heard Ethel spat at the pigtail girl.
"Just because you are a Hallow, does not mean you are a great witch" Katherine added with a smirk across her pink lips. Ethel's jaw dropped as her cheeks became red. Mildred beamed looking at Katherine letting her lips motion the words, thank you. Katherine winked at the first year and swiftly turning around. She walked directly into Hardbroom. The tall witch towered over her. Hardbroom's hair was in a tight bun and her face was filled with anger. Silence swept over the room.
"Where are you suppose to be child"
Katherine took a step back, Hardbroom took a step forward as she waited for the answer.
"PE"
Hardbroom didn't respond but pointed at her door with her black stiletto nail. Katherine quickly walked out leaving the first years alone with Hardbroom. She dashed thru the corridors toward the courtyard.
Ms. Drill was an athletic witch, she was known with the second year pupils being very competitive. Making her way to stand near Esemerelda, Katherine whispered making sure no one else from the third year could hear.
"Your sister...hates Mildred Hubble"
Esemerelda rolled her eyes while releasing a deep breath. "Unfortunately, what did she do now"
"Just a rude comment in potions...so I may have added a rude comment"
Esmerelda smirked. "She probably was mortified"
"Yes...but you know...mum had to make a scene" Katherine giggled as she mimicked her mother's known stern face. Her blue eyes had no anger in them, the impression gave Esmerelda the giggles. Everyone knew about the two first years having issues with one another. For a while it was the topic conversation at breakfast. Ethel and Mildred were always bickering and the girls all heard about the cats being switched at the broom test. The rumors of Hardbroom disliking Mildred and giving the girl a hard time, Katherine had a feeling it was true. She knew her mother disapproved of nonmagic families attending a magic school. One of the many reasons Pentangles was out of the question when her Father thought separating mother and daughter would be for the best.
"Alright third years, time to do a few laps" all the girls moaned as Ms. Drill blew her whistle. The entertainment of Katherine mimicking her mother came to an end.
Once PE was over, all the third year girls were exausted. It was time for potions. Esemerelda and Katherine were linked by the arms as they discussed reversal spells. Katherine stopped as she watched an upset Ethal pass them with Druesilla following.
Esmerelda rose a brow "What's going on" she called out to Ethel as the linked duo followed.
Ethel turned to look at both girls but her face was strange. She was not looking like her normal self, instead she had a hog snout for a nose. Ethel's eyes glared at the two girls before disappearing in an empty classroom. Katherine stopped Esemelda from following by grabbing her shoulder.
"We will be late for Potions" using a tardy for an excuse. It wasn't that she didn't want her friend to help her sister, but it was clear that Ethel needed time to be alone. Which Katherine understood. Sometimes a young witch needed a moment to breath. Once The girls entered the potions class, their stood an annoyed teacher. Hardbroom's slender figure was standing straight and tall as her black dress clung perfectly to her figure. It was her brown eyes watching the pupils enter. Katherine knew not to say a word, she even knew not to breath loudly as she walked to the back desk. Esemerelda and Katherine gave each other a knowing look ,Mildred and Ethel. Had to be Mildred to make her mum this angry, she knew she wasn't crossing any lines. For a moment she second guessed herself, causing her mind to run into a panic.
Did I forget anything she thought. Touching her blonde hair, it was up like her mother requested a week ago. Esmerelda touched her knee lightly. Bringing Katherine back into reality. A gentle touch made the young witch take a deep breath to calm her nerves. Her mother had no reason to be upset with her, this time.
"Girls, I need to see Ms. Cackle, so while I am away. I expect you all to make a potion for wind" as her eyes scanned the room once, she disappeared from sight. Katherine looked at Esmerelda
"well...guess we don't have to worry about her" she grinned.
With her mother gone Katherine felt the pressure wasn't as bad to be perfect. Perfect like Esmerelda, thought came quickly as she watched Esmeralda gather all the correct ingredients. Shaking the thought from her head, Katherine didnt want to be jealous of her friend.
A fellow third year cleared her throat. She had red hair and freckles all over her face. Ricci Jones was her name. "I hear that HB has been busy with first years" they do seem like a handful Katherine thought. Something she knew her mother had no patience for. Rules are rules she could hear her mother's word vividly.
Esmeralda smirked at Ricci's comment. The two girls both knew that Ethel was trying to make a name for herself. Ethel may be a Hallow but she indeed was one reason that Hardbroom was always going after Mildred.
After Esmerelda added a bee to the potion, Katherine stirred it three times as the liquid turned a gold shade.
"Everything down" Hardbroom called out.
Her lips were no longer in a straight line as she scanned all of the gold shade liquids in the cauldrons. Hardbroom had no smile but her face was becoming relaxed.Katherine watched her mother, as she ordered students to successfully create wind. Hardbroom looked at her daughter and rose a brow "Katherine...give it a go"
Katherine took a brush and dabbed a bit of potion on her finger tips "Zephr Iolus Atherium Ventis Levis Vaporum Turbulurum Actatis!"
Wind blew from her fingers knocking a few papers down. Hardbroom never spoke a word but gave a simple nod of approvment. Hecatie Hardbroom's brown eyes averted to a different group. At times Katherine longed for her mother to tell her she was proud. To actually speak it. But, Hardbroom was not like most Mothers. Katherine knew her role as her daughter, follow rules, be respectful while you excel in witchcraft and know the Witches Code. Yet, at times she longed for her mother to admit if she was proud. Katherine's father always showered her with praises, she couldn't deny that. Thoughts of her father standing in the room beaming with pride filled her imagination.
Esmeralda offered her a congratulations "You did good" she whispered. Esmerelda knew how the lack of support offended Katherine. She confinded in her best friend two years in a row, the third year would be no different. Katherine allowed her head to gently touch Esmerelda head. Her dad wasn't here at Cackle's Academy, but Katherine was thankful to have her.
Year three group was done for the day, both girls grabbed their bags. "I need to find Zelena, I want to go for a fly" Katherine spoke as she walked ahead of Esemelda. Just to get her mind off of school and work. Her blonde pony tail swayed side to side as she disappeared around the corridor to head up stairs.
Her blue eyes dropped down as she saw a slimy green frog that croaked in her direction.
"Don't touch that, it's a safe and health hazard" Ms. Gullet the Spell Science teacher called out as she made her way to the frogs. Katherine's lips rose in disgust. She wasnt planning on touching a frog, it was the one thing in potions she always had Esemerelda handle.
"Don't worry Ms. Gullet, I'm just going get my cat" she replied as she watched Ms. Gullet picking it up and head a different direction. Allowing the shivers to escape her body, Katherine made her way to her bedroom.
"Zelena" she called out. The black cat appeared at once. Allowing Katherine to swoop her up. The black fur tickled Katherine's nostrils as she buried her face within her familiar. "Sweet girl, let's go for a ride" she whispered as she headed to the broomstick shed.
Flying was a skill that Hardbroom instilled upon Katherine, she had many lessons as a child. So flying gracefully was excpeted of Northamn, something she did. Allowing the broom to go up toward the clouds, she felt free. Free from Cackles, even if it was for a brief moment. Katherine eyes wasn't looking at the beautiful nature but instead she gazed upon the nonmagical world. The streets, the city, all of it seemed so intresting. She was so curious how they even handled life with no magic.
"What are you doing up here" the voice was soft and Katherine recgonized Esemerelda's voice instantly. Her tone was always lovely and never harsh or rude.
"Looking...and wondering" Katherine admitted. Blue eyes never left the city view.
"About what"
"Do you ever wonder, what life is like for them"
"No" esmeralda replied.
Katherine turned to her friend "Do you think its intresting".
Esmerelda shook her head as her brown braid landed upon her shoulder.
"I think it would be scary to be in that world, with no magic"
To Katherine, it was also a thrill. Something that seemed so exciting.
"I guess.. "Katherine looked toward Zelena then back at Esmerelda "At times...I feel being a witch is so demanding" Esmerelda couldn't deny it. Being a witch but also a first born had it's own problems.
"Well what will be demanding us in a bit, will soon be the school. I came up here to let you know that Ms. Gullit is no longer our teacher...we have a professor now"
The loss of Ms. Gullit did not sadden Katherine, but returning back to the ground at Cackles did. She didn't want to return, she wanted adventure, to meet a real nonmagical person that knew nothing of magic.
