Keigo groaned and pressed his face deeper into the couch pillow as his phone rang from the kitchen table. He debated if he should just ignore the call. He had an especially hard day and wanted nothing more than to rest. His wings ached from how quickly he had needed to fly to catch that one stupid villain with a cheetah quirk. If this was another mission, he could just claim that he hadn't heard the call or his phone had been dead. Whatever. He was way too tired to do hero work right now anyway.
With another beep the phone went to voicemail. Keigo listened for a message, but instead the caller hung up. Good, so it couldn't have been anything important.
For the next half an hour he didn't move a muscle, just laying there and enjoying the moment of peace. He would have loved to fall asleep, after all it was already past ten pm – seriously, why did heroes have to have such a ridiculously long work day? – but the pain in his feathers only continued to grow, preventing him from drifting off into the sweet release of sleep.
Maybe Keigo should reconsider working with Endeavor no matter how useful this new alliance was for him. It had only been a few weeks, but the number of feathers the reckless idiot of a number one hero had burned had started to take its toll on Hawks. Fire really wasn't a good pairing for him. With more than half of his stronger feathers gone and the new blooms not yet strong enough to hold his weight, long flying times had become more of a pain with every day.
Keigo lifted his head with a sigh and stared at the bathroom door. He should probably apply the pain ointment to the roots of his feathers, and the connection they had with his back, or he wouldn't be able to move them at all tomorrow. With another sigh he sent a few of his feathers out to fetch the salve, while he shuffled himself into a sitting position.
He hissed when he pulled off his shirt and it got caught on his wings, resulting in the feathers being ruffled even more. He reached an arm around his back to fix it, but froze when a rattle sounded from the balcony. The next moment, the window opened and an all too familiar figure stepped in, slender body slipping through the slim crack in the glass.
A grin spread over Dabi's scarred face, pulling dangerously at the stitches, when he saw the half undressed state his boyfriend was in.
"Oh my, already so eager?"
"What the hell are you doing here?!" Keigo stared at him with wide eyes.
"You weren't answering your phone, so I thought I would just come by." Dabi said, his lips turning up.
"Are you out of your mind, Dabi? What if I had a good reason not to answer? Like if there had been a spontaneous meet up with the other pros?"
Dabi shrugged nonchalantly, like it was completely unproblematic for an A-ranked villain to show up at the number two hero's place in the middle of the night.
"You need help with that, birdie?" The scarred man asked, gesturing at the shirt that was still halfway over the red wings while completely ignoring the potential issues.
Keigo snored. "Hell yeah."
His boyfriend made his way over to the couch and carefully stripped the piece of cloth from him. His touch was gentle and anyone who only knew Dabi as a villain would have been surprised by how soft he was able to be. At least with Keigo.
The winged hero couldn't help but melt into the touch, the warmth of Dabi's hands was soothing on his aching wings. Of course the other man immediately picked up on his reaction,
"Rough day, huh?" He asked, his voice going soft. Keigo just nodded. Dabi didn't need a further explanation. He took the pain salve from the living room table and carefully massaged it into the roots of his wings.
The tension in Keigo's shoulders released as the pain finally subdued. The villain dropped himself onto the couch next to him and pulled him into his lap,
"Come here, pretty bird."
Keigo nuzzled against the other's chest with a smile on his face. Dabi pulled his fingers through his ruffled feathers, straightening them out and soothing the aching pain with the warmth of his hands. He hummed lowly and the rumbling Keigo could feel from his chest relaxed him even further.
Being groomed and taken care of made a high chirp escape his throat.
Immediately his eyes widened, and he clapped a hand over his mouth. His face heated up from the embarrassment, he was glad it was relatively dark in the unlit apartment. Dabi, however, only chuckled quietly, the sound vibrating through his chest.
"Don't stop yourself, Kei. I like it when you go all birdy." Keigo could have sworn he saw the other's face turn pink in the unscarred areas when he quietly added,
"I think it's kinda cute."
That admission made another chirp bubble in Keigo's throat, and this time he didn't bother trying to hold it back. The smile that spread over his face when he nuzzled back into his boyfriend's chest was so wide that it was almost painful.
The commission had always hated his bird ticks and tried to train him out of them. They didn't see the behaviour as fit for a hero in public. Whenever his inner bird had acted up he had been punished, until he learned to suppress the natural urges and behaviours. But here in his apartment, in Dabi's arms he could let the mask slip. He didn't have to be a hero. He could just be Keigo and Dabi would accept him for it, with ticks and all.
Dabi continued to groom his feathers and for the next few minutes they just relaxed into the comfortable silence surrounding them. When the villain moved one of his hands from his wings to his head and began massaging his scalp, Keigo cooed and chased after the sensation with his head.
The action got a chuckle out of Dabi. "You like that, Kei?"
He nodded in a daze. "It's a bird thing." He mumbled. "Hawks show affection by scratching each other's heads with their beaks."
Dabi gently scratched a nail over his scalp again, drawing a shutter from the Keigo. "Then I'll make sure to do that more often from now on." He said in a low, promising voice, that made the man on top of him shudder by itself.
He went to answer, but instead a long yawn left his mouth.
"Seems like someone is tired." Dabi chuckled and went to sit up. "Let's get you to bed, you have work in the morning."
"Nooo." Keigo whined and clung to him. "You're comfortable."
"Oh, so my pretty bird wants to use me as a human pillow?" Dabi teased. "Fine by me, but don't whine if you're stiff in the morning."
"I'm already stiff anyway. It would surprise me if I could sleep at all." Keigo huffed, while he sent one of his feathers to fetch them a blanket.
"Well, that I can do something about." The villain mumbled and set a heated hand on his bare back right between his wings. Keigo immediately went completely slack on top of him, orientation growing dazed. Damn it, his beautiful boyfriend knew all his weak spots.
"That's no fair." He mumbled, while warm and relaxing numbness swallowed him.
"Go to sleep, idiot." Dabi said fondly, and Keigo did.
