Ch 5: Explained

"Okay can you elaborate on everything you said earlier? You said everything a little fast, so I'd like a clarification of werewolves and how I'm supposed to be one" I asked. It's only been about an hour or two since Ruby killed the succubus. We just arrived at the edge of the woods that she lives in apparently. She's wearing my black T and my sister's jean short shorts.

"Yeah, ask away and I'll answer them one by one" She said

"Okay… That girl, you said she was a succubus? What's the difference between a succubus and a vampire?" I asked. From folklore, I just figured a succubus was a seductive female vampire, but I guess not "Oh and why did you tell me to bring the book I grabbed from the Beacon study room?"

"I said one at a time… anyways first off, that book was actually published by someone who actually knew about the Supernatural World of Remnant. That's one of the only copies, if you're wondering why it was in that room don't ask me. But almost everything in that book is actually true" She said with a shrug. Her long hair fell over her left eye. She did one of the girliest things I know of, she moved her hair behind her ear. I know it's a common occurrence, but something about the gesture is attractive- STOP THINKING LIKE THAT AND LISTEN.

"How old is the book?" I asked.

"Well one's been in my family for a while, so I don't really know. Back to the succubus question. I only really know the basics of them. I don't actively hunt supernatural beings like my sister and uncle, so It's not like I need to know. Anyways, succubus have a few differences from vampires. Overall they're weaker than them, however they're still immortal until their heart is ripped out, head ripped off, or get a steak to the heart. But one thing they can't do is compel, which is like mind control. But the biggest difference is probably that succubus can walk in the sun. I guess mother nature deemed them just weak enough where they didn't need that weakness. So yeah, succubus are basically weaker vampires that can't compel, but can walk in the sun. They still need blood to live though" She said, taking a deep breath after she was finished.

"Oh okay I get it, and it can be any blood? Could one live off of animal blood or something?" I asked.

"I've never heard or seen a vampire drink animal blood before but maybe? There's also another kind of vampire, we call them Vampire lords. They're like vampire's exactly, but on a new moon they turn into something that looks like a bat human. Pretty much they go skinless and grow wings, fangs, and claws. Though I've never seen one. Honestly if my uncle Qrow hasn't seen one I'd say they're just a myth" Ruby said in a matter-of-a-fact tone. Okay so there're succubus, vampires, and vampire lords. I wonder if that's all.

"Okay then what about us? We're werewolves? I thought they were supposed to be more man-like" I said, and Ruby immediately scrunched her face up in annoyance. While I'm sure she wanted to get the fact that she's angry across, all it did was make her look adorable.

"No! That's a Lycan, there is a difference! Werewolves turn into wolves on the full moon, while Lycan's turn into Lycan's on the full moon. The biggest difference besides the appearance is the different buffs. Werewolves are a more overall speed and mobility build-" I couldn't help the fact that she was describing them as classes, she must play video games "-While the Lycan's are slower, but have longer and sharper claws. However a werewolf has a stronger bite and sharper teeth. Really a werewolf is better than a Lycan, at least in my opinion. Lycan's are impossible to control while in the form. Normal werewolves can learn to control their form, while Lycan's go into complete blind Blood Lust" She said finishing.

"Okay so both turn on full moons, but werewolves are faster and more mobile while Lycan's are slower but are stronger?" I asked.

"No, they're not really stronger. They have longer claws, but a weaker bite, so it just depends on the situation. I think personally overall that werewolves are better. Also another big difference is that a single werewolf bite will kill a vampire, but a Lycan's won't. However succubus's are not affected by werewolf poison" She said with a nod.

"Okay, then where do the silver eyes come in?" I asked. Ruby had a huge smile across her face.

"Okay now that is another reason that werewolves are better than Lycan's. So there used to be a few more family lines, but the silver eyes were a way to combat vampires. I'll go into more detail about how the vampire's were made later, but werewolves and Lycan's were first, supernatural being wise, besides witches and warlocks. Well a human tribe had a witch do a spell and made there whole tribe into vampires, and unlike werewolves and Lycan's, they had access to their strength and speed at all times.

And while they burned in the sun, during the night they almost hunted them into extinction. So mother nature had to make a balance, she chose I think ten families, and gave them silver eyes. Silver eyes are like a manual, directly built into us. Once we activate our gift we can access the werewolf transformation any time, and get the same boosts.

However it's still triggered by rage, like when I turned back into a human how I was really mad. It takes a little bit to calm down after. And we can stay transformed as much as we want. However with time most of the families have either gone into hiding or died, but I only know of two… well three lines that are still around now. The Rose line, which is mine. The Vahill line, which is yours. And then the Calavera line" Ruby said.

"Okay I need a break for my brain" I said as I rubbed my temples with my hands.

"Yeah it's a lot, I'm surprised you're handling it all this well though. When I was first told about all this I was scared, thinking every person might be a succubus or a werewolf. Took my sister a lot to talk me into college. Which didn't take long since I want to be a detective: So she wants to be a detective too?

"You want to be a detective too?" Ruby turned her head with a smile, though it didn't look like her normal bubbly smile.

"Yeah, my mother was a detective" Wait… Was. I could feel my heart almost burst at the look on her face… Pain, pain that I could relate to all too well.

"Yeah that's why I want to be a detective too… my mom was also in the force" Ruby's head turned quickly and looked at me with wide eyes.

"Was?" She asked. I just nodded in response. It was quiet for a little bit until we came over a hill and saw a little cottage in the distance. Ruby stopped me at the top. I turned and looked down at the short girl.

"I… I'm sorry about your mom… I know what it's like to go through life without your mom around" She said earnestly.

"Thanks… anyways back on topic. So how do you activate the curse again?" I asked the crimson haired girl. She stopped and crossed her arms with a pout.

"What did I say? For silver eyed werewolves it's a gift. The pain when transforming is near mitigated sense we have the guide on how to do it the most proficient way. So in order to activate our gift we need to kill a being of supernatural ability. And before you ask, vampires are kind of complicated" Ruby rubbed the back of her head.

"What do you mean? Isn't it just a bite or something?" I asked.

"Uhhm, not exactly… Okay so to start off, in order to turn someone, a succubus or vampire needs to bite someone, but it's not the bite that does it. They have a specific gene in their teeth that when it enters a human's bloodstream it'll turn them. But almost every human will turn into a succubus, even if a vampire turns them. But a very small few have a gene that reacts differently to the vampire gene, and turns them into a vampire instead. Even if a succubus is the one that turns the human, if the person being turned has the vampire gene they'll still transition into a vampire rather than a succubus. After the Gene is in the human system they have to die, and then they come back as a succubus or Vampire, there's a name for the gene but I don't remember what is it" With that we arrived at the front door of the cottage.

"It's called the Blood Gene, at least that's what the vampires call it. And when a vampire or succubus drinks from someone they can taste if the human does or does not have the Blood Gene" A man from behind us said. I turned quickly while Ruby opened the door to the cottage. The man in question has blonde hair and light blue eyes, and a natural looking tan. He's a little taller than me. His outfit is a little… outdated. He has on orange cargo shorts with a brown jacket with a yellow shirt underneath. His boots are dark brown leather. It's an interesting outfit to say the least "So Rubes, do you want to explain to me why he's here?" Ruby turned around, making sure not to make eye contact with the man.

"Well dad, if you must know… he was helping me study… or was going to. But you remember Coco Adel, the one Yang was gonna take out?" The muscular blonde man nodded knowingly signed "Well let's just say that… she no longer has a head, and Michael saw everything. And since mother nature decided not to give werewolves compulsion, I decided to tell him everything I know and bring him here" She said with a chuckle and shrug.

"Ruby… What do you expect? For me to tell him everything I know? I mean he hasn't activated the curse yet right?" Ruby seemed agitated by how he worded what he just said.

"Gift, and no he hasn't. He almost did with Coco but I stopped him" She said crossing her arms. We still stood in the front yard as the two stared at each other. I think I should cut in.

"Yeah why didn't you let me kill her? I mean she was obviously evil, and you said that silver eyed wolves don't go through pain when they transform" I said. The blonde man looked at me with a shocked expression, then looked at Ruby with what I assume was anger.

"What the hell Ruby!? Why would you lie to him?" He asked.

"Because I didn't want to scare him!" She retorted. But he shook his head and looked at me.

"Each silver eyed wolf line had to have a downside in order to keep balance. The Rose family is absolute rage when in transformation, and if not properly trained they can kill innocents even after the transformation ends. The Calavera's is a shorter life span… The Vahill's were granted even more strength and speed… but every time they turn, which is also forced during the full moon, hurts more than any other family line. Granted once they transformed they have absolute control, power, and speed. That's why she didn't let you kill The succubus" I looked at Ruby, but she just looked away.

"It was said that the Vahill's were the first of the silver eyed wolves, so they're the strongest… but they have the harshest downside" Ruby said. I stood there for a sec… So if I ever kill a supernatural being then I have to endure pain every full moon, and any time I try to turn "And with normal werewolves it's just their bones breaking… but with the Vahill's it's said that… mother nature made them feel everything. Normal werewolves only feel the bones breaking themselves, while the Vahill's feel that, and the organs shifter, the skull morphing in that of a wolves skull"

"So you're basically telling me not to kill anyone… I mean with a curse like that I'm fine with that. I'll just be a support role" I said. Who said I have to actually activate the curse? If I'm gonna be involved in any way then I might as well be the guy that learns everything about every supernatural being. Basically the living breathing version of the book I brought.

"Support role? What do you even expect to do if we are hunting a succubus?" The blonde man asked.

"Look let's just go inside and you can just tell him everything to watch out for, now that he knows about everything I'd figured you could tell him sense you're better at explaining things than me" Ruby said as she walked into the cottage. I followed close behind her, trying not to be alone with the blonde man. I just feel like he'll interrogate me if Ruby isn't near. The house was obviously made of wood entirely, even on the inside, no carpet in sight.

"Hey sis!" Ruby was tackled by a flash of blonde out of nowhere "I hear you stole my kill!"

"Yang… I can't…. Breath" Ruby said, trying to escape.

"Ruby, you're stronger than me, just hit my side to escape," Yang said with a smile. Ruby stood up, Yang keeping her hold around her neck. Ruby brought her right elbow down hard. Yang was launched into the wall, actually breaking through it, effectively being launched outside.

"Oh my gosh Yang I'm so sorry!" Ruby apologized as she ran out the back door to see if her sister was okay. The man came up behind me and placed his hand on my shoulder.

"I guess she told you about everything except the strongest Vampires, Hunters, and Witches" He said. I looked at him and he motioned to the supposed living room with his head. I followed him and sat down on the couch while he sat on a recliner.

"She told me about the Vampire Lords actually" I said.

"That's not the strongest Vampire. No it's a Vampire that can't be recreated, and every Vampire, succubus, and Vampire lorde actually originates from these four. They're called the creators by all the other Vampires. They're still hurt by the sun, but can't die from it. And they are immortal, the only way to kill them is a stake made from a tree that they made sure burned. So they are immortal, and they can't die" He said, sitting back and relaxing into the brown leathered recliner.

"So have you seen them before?" I asked.

"No, but my brother Qrow has though. He's met two of them, and apparently they're in Vale City, so stay at Beacon, and try and never go into the city. We do know that all the Vampire's, Succubus, and Vampire lords can be compelled by them. Unless of course they drink Sachri, but being a natural poison to all of them they never actually go through with it. By the way, keep that necklace on. Sachri prevents compulsion, which is a vampire's greeting weapon. Vampire Lords are also able to compel. The succubus are the only ones that aren't granted that ability. But some would say that makes the succubus the most threatening, because witches I know think that's why they're allowed into the sun. They told me that mother nature probably decided that they weren't a big enough threat to make them weak to the sun. Also if Ruby forgot to mention, all supernatural beings need to be invited into a residence, otherwise they can't get into a house" The blond man said. Wait, I never invited Coco into my house though, so how did she get in?

"I have a question" The man cocked his eyebrow, waiting for me to ask said question "I never invited Coco into my apartment… But she was still able to get in"

"What were you talking about when going to your apartment with her?" He asked. What were we talking about?

During the Ally

"Hey there killer… you still want to take me up on that offer?" Coco asked me. Her index finger slid up my arm.

"Uhm… I don't know" I said, mentally I yelled at myself 'Take the offer you idiot!'

"Are you sure? We can go slow at first if you need" She talked with a husky tone.

"O-Okay yeah sure, let me call my bike and we can-" She grabbed my other hand and stopped it from grabbing my scroll.

"Is it far? Because I'd prefer to walk. I gotta keep this shape somehow" She said

"Okay yeah we can walk, it's only about half an hour with walking" I said. I looked back at my table and they didn't seem to notice, but Ruby from her table was looking directly at me and Coco. She saw me look at her and she abruptly looked away. Coco grabbed my hand and intertwined our fingers and walked me out of the cafeteria. We walked with actual normal small talk.

"Are we almost there?" She asked, seeming impatient

"Uhm yeah, it should be another ten minutes" I said. I was expecting her to respond, but she grabbed the collar of my shirt and dragged me into an alleyway. There were a few old dudes near a barrel for fire. She looked at them and did something that scared the men enough to make them run. I couldn't see as she was facing away from me. As they ran past me Coco slammed me against the wall, actually hurting a little.

"I hope you're ready because I'm so fucking hungry" She said as she slammed her lips onto my own, not giving me time to respond. At first I was shocked, but I returned it and grabbed her waist, however she grabbed them and placed them over her ass. I squeezed and she responded by slowly running her hands up my chest. She broke the kiss and went to my neck. I picked her up and switched positions with the girl and slammed her against the wall "Oh, the boy does know what he's doing, I thought I'd have to do everything" She said as she went back to my neck. I was about to go further when there was a sharp pain on my neck. She's biting me?

"Hey not too hard alri- AH" All of a sudden she went from a small bite to biting so hard that I let go of her and pushed her off of me. When I did I brought my hand up to my neck and felt a warm liquide, and a lot of it. I looked at Coco and her mouth was slightly open with blood slowly seeping out of her mouth. She had an extra pair of teeth that jutted out making fangs, her eyes blood red. She grabbed a handkerchief and cleaned her mouth.

"Wow, your blood is delicious… and Compatible" She said with a smile.

Present

"I mean whe I talked about us having sex, I did talk as if it'd be don in my apartment, would that still count as inviting them in?" I asked. The look on the man's face was something that took me off guard… A smirk?

"Yeah that would count. Alright moving onto hunters. Hunters are pretty easy to explain, My daughter Yang is a hunter. A small few humans at random are chosen and given extra strength, and resistance to being compelled. And that's all we know, very simple really" He said. I hear the back door open, along with it Ruby and Yang walk into the room.

"You tell him how bad ass a hunter is?" Yang asked while flexing her arms. Ruby sat to my right while Yang continued to change poses.

"Actually he said they were pretty simple, just a resistance to compulsion and extra strength" I said, making a tl dr version of what the blonde man said… I still don't know this guy's name.

"What?! That makes Hunters sound… boring" Yang said in a defeated tone.

"Well when you're compared to a silver eyed wolf" Ruby brought her right hand up to her chest and straightened her back "A hunter is just a strong human with one extra ability. While I also can't be compelled, have way more strength, faster, better eyesight, sense of smell, oh and I can transform into a werewolf and have all of that heightened during the state"

"Man Ruby, I miss you before you activated that curse" Yang said, sitting down next to her sister. Ruby seemed hurt by her words.

"What the hell does that mean!?" Ruby suddenly burst with anger, making Yang and I jump.

"Sorry I mean gift… It's just ever since you activated your gene you've… changed" Yang said scooching a bit closer to Ruby.

"What do you mean I've changed? I feel the same, plus it hasn't even been a week yet since I changed" Ruby said, seeming to calm down.

"It's just… ever since you did you've been quick to anger" Yang said.

"Yeah well that's because I'm a Rose… and when a werewolf activates their genes their emotions are heightened… not to the degree of vampires, but still. I'm just an exaggerated version of me before I had the gene activated. I'm no di-" Ruby was interrupted by Yang.

"Ruby, you would have never raised your voice like that… until now that is. Yes you are an exaggerated version of yourself, but your anger was also heightened, couple that with the Rose side effect and you've been just… more prone to anger, which is unlike you" Yang said looking up from the floor to look Ruby in the eyes. Ruby started to breathe fast and stood up.

"I'm gonna step outside for a sec… I'll go get dinner" Ruby said as she took her leave and stepped outside. It was quick but I heard bones break, and soon a growl before she ran off. It was quiet for a bit before the man talked.

"I'm sorry that you were here when that happened. Ruby is still being overwhelmed by all the emotions that she's getting, that before she ignored and never acted on. Like anger. The beginning of this week she activated her Gene" The man said.

"It's okay Mr…" Finally seeing a chance to ask for his name.

"Oh sorry, my name is Taiyang, but you can just call me Tai" He said.

"Michael, Michael Vahill… so I guess I should talk about why Ruby brought me here, or at least why I think she brought me here. When the Coco girl drank my blood she said I was compatible… Does that mean I have the Blood Gene?" I asked. Tai's eyes widened at the new information. He stood up and started pacing back and forth "Sir?"

"I've never heard of a silver eyed wolf having the Blood Gene. Normal werewolves have had it, but after being turned they just became a vampire and lost their ability to turn into a werewolf… but I wonder how a silver eyed wolf would react" He asked himself as he continued to pace. I should tell him that Coco was sent by someone.

"Actually Coco said that she was sent by someone, she was tasked with turning me I guess, but Ruby stopped her before she could actually do anything, ripped her damn head off" I said, getting a flash of the scene in my head.

"Okay well then that means you'll be targeted again. Which means you can't be alone… do you have a friend you can stay with?" Tai asked.

"No, I don't want to endanger them. I just won't invite anyone into my house, and I guess Ruby can come to my apartment every morning and I can drive us to Beacon. I just won't leave my apartment unless I have someone of supernatural ability with me" I suggested. Both Tai and Yang seemed to think it over.

"Alright that's a good Idea, tell Yang she's allowed in your house just in case something happens and Ruby can't get to you in time for some reason" Tai said. I turned to look at Yang.

"Yang, You are allowed to come into my house" I said.

"Cool, better hide all your magazines, I don't want to walk in and see something I don't want too" She teased. I just ignored the tease, which she was upset about "You're no fun"

"Hey Tai I have a question, every movie I've watched with supernatural's and the like all have a version of a hybrid… has there ever been a hybrid?" I asked. Tai and Yang gave each other a look.

"No, at least none that I know of. The book handed down to me doesn't mention anything at least" He said pointing at a book on one of his shelves in the living room. The same book as mine.

"Oh right Ruby said to bring this with me, she said it's the same book as yours" I pulled out the book and showed it to Tai "I got it from one of the study room at beacon"

"Hmm, I can only assume Oz was up to this. He's one of the Witches I go to for finding specific people, he's actually a warlock. Same as a witch, just the male variant I guess. However warlocks are more rare and generally stronger than witches. And if that book was found then he wanted it to be found. Which means Oz might have a plan for you" Tai said. I could hear something being dragged outside, probably Ruby.

"I guess Ruby's back" I said standing up.

"What do you mean?" Yang asked.

"Well something's being dragged outside, so I assume it's Ruby" I said walking into the kitchen. Ruby tossed in a deer, still in her werewolf form.

"Rubes, go up stairs and get into some clothes" Yang said tossing her a towel, I would assume is for the blood that's all down her chest and Jaw "Hey Michael, are you staying for dinner?"

"Uh, yeah sure" The dinner was good, and I enjoyed the conversations we all had. This was all so sudden that I'm not sure if I'm dreaming or not. I guess only time will tell.

A few weeks later

*Beep* *Beep* Bee-* I shut the alarm off and yawned. Slowly I rolled out of bed and into my living room, Ruby asleep on the couch. What the hell happened yesterday? Right, we went to a party with Gen and Laga, Ruby got drunk so I had to bring her back to my place to crash sense she said that her dad would have kicked her ass. I remember telling Yang about it last night, and she said that before she activated her gene, Ruby never even touched alcohol.

I walked past the couch and into the kitchen to make some breakfast and tea. Apparently Ruby was a coffee person, so I had to buy a coffee machine. Shortly after I finished the potatoes and gravy I heard a familiar petite girl wake up and groan.

"Hmmmm Is that breakfast with Coffee?" She asked, leaning up over the couch.

"Yes it is little wolf" I don't know when that nickname came up but I just called her little wolf by accident and she liked it I guess because she didn't freak out about it.

"Hmm well then I guess I'll get up then" She stood up and stretched, still wearing her clothes from yesterday "Thanks for letting me sleep here… my dad would have killed me if he found out I got drunk" She sat down at the bar table as I set her food and coffee down.

"Yeah I'm gonna go take a walk outside. And I'd like to walk alone please, just need a bit of freedom. It's been a while since I walked through the Vale park" I said, taking a sip of my tea. Ruby gave me a look "Look I know you're worried, but I'll be fine. If someone tries to compel me I'll just follow along so they don't know that my necklace has Sahcri in it. And I'll shoot you a text, okay?"

"Okay fine, But the second you even have a bad feeling send me a text okay?" I nodded and finished my breakfast and tea before leaving. Ruby and I have grown quite close these past few weeks. Probably because I can't not have someone supernatural by my side since I'm being hunted. But I feel like one walk alone is needed. The cold weather is coming soon, fall is coming to an end soon. So I have on blue jeans with black boots, pretty normal for me. As for my upper body I have on a white undershirt with a red jacket, that's a little thicker than my other jacket. I threw up the hood as I walked outside into the cold outside world. I looked around the big city, skyscrapers becoming normal for me, which is weird since I never thought that would happen. Patches biggest building is only four stories tall.

I enjoyed the walk to the Vale City park, which besides the Atlas City park, is the biggest park in the world. Though, unlike the Atlas park, Vale's is all natural. The City was built around the park while the Atlas park was built. All brought in from other continents. The Vale city park is a no technology zone. Only things allowed are what's on a person, like scrolls or laptops. There's no cameras or buildings, just mother nature. It's quite peaceful. I choose a path and follow it. The tree's leaves are slowly but surely turning from green to yellow, and then will eventually turn orange. However, that didn't last as I was grabbed by the back of the neck and tossed to the side, slamming into a tree "AGHH!"

"Wow, what a scream, I wonder if that's what Coco did when she was KILLED!" A large man in a green shirt said. He looks like he's from mistral.

"Look she was going to kill me! And I didn't kill her!" I tried to back up, but I couldn't move my right arm. I look to my right, so that's why, my right arm is broken.

"I know you didn't kill her, that fucken pup killed her… she never killed a single person, all she was doing was what she was compelled to do! She was going to turn you, you wouldn't have been dead!" The man screamed.

"But I don't want to be a vampire! Or a damn succubus!" I yelled back standing up. The man slowly walked up to me.

"Until you're dead he'll make us do what he says, I'm next, then Fox, and after fox he'll go after velvet" He disappeared all of a sudden. From behind I felt a pain I have never felt before. I turned around, The man's hand was through my back and had my heart in his grip. "It's time to finish this here and n-" He stopped talking and fell to the ground. I fell as well, blood pooling out of my wound. I rolled over and looked at what killed the man. A very petite girl with a very unique hair color, and eye color. Her outfit was also unique. She held the man's heart in her hand. When she saw me she seemed worried and rushed to my side and kneeled down. Without a single hesitation she brought her wrist up to her mouth, fangs sprouted from them and she bit her wrist, immediately putting her wrist in front of me.

"What the hell? What will that do?" I asked. She went to talk but only a scratch came out, almost like she couldn't talk. So she pointed at her wrist, where her blood poured out, and then pointed at my mouth. After that she pointed at my wound and gave me a thumbs up "Your blood will heal me?" She frantically nodded. I grabbed her wrist with my left hand and brought it up to my mouth, before I drank I looked at her. Who is this girl? Is she a vampire, Vampire lord, succubus, or is she one of the four? I pushed the thoughts away and drank. Immediately I felt my wounds healing. I kept drinking until I felt like it was enough. I let go of her wrist and nodded to her as thanks. She gave me a smile and just sat there next to me as feeling came back into my right arm. I sat up and looked at her with shock.

"What's your name?" I asked. She held out her hand "Your name's hand?" She gave me a confused look and looked at her hand. She blushed and grabbed her scroll and pointed at it, then to me "You want my scroll?" She nodded with a shy smile. I gave her my scroll and she punched in what I assume is her number. She handed it back and then grabbed her own and texted away. I received a new message.

[Unknown] Hey, I can't talk. My name is Neo.

I looked up at her and she smiled "Thank you Neo, for saving me… but why did you save me?" She grabbed her scroll and texted away.

[Neo] Well, the man who turned me died not too long ago, by one of the four, that I'm sure you know about. And he's been looking for you, so I figured I'd find you first. Well this story did take quite a turn, originally I didn't have Neo in the story. But recently I have changed my plans for the story, which is why the tags changed.
