Since I have a alt character that is named Prom, so I had the thought to write this fic after playing the FFXV FFXIV event!
Noctis and Peony set up their little camp for the night after taking out that large daemon. They both had agreed that the rest would be well needed after such a long and tiring battle.
Since Noctis knew they couldn't go to sleep hungry, he offered to make food. Thankfully, he had some supplies in his armiger, and it was just enough to make some rice balls. He smiled at himself, knowing Ignis would be proud he remembered how to make at least some form of food, even if it was a small dish.
"Here you go, hope you enjoy," Noctis said.
Peony nodded. "Of course. Thank you, they look just like the ones I've seen in Doma. I'm sure they'll taste wonderful."
After they had eaten, Noctis poured himself a small drink and got back into his chair. He took a few sips before he looked over at Peony, the cat-girl paladin who had recently become his new friend.
"So what's your story? Why do you go around doing what you do?" he asked her.
Peony looked thoughtful for a moment, pondering the question. She stared down at the fire, gathering her thoughts, before she turned back to look at Noctis. "It's hard to say. I do love to protect others, but mostly… I think I prefer just being with my friends. The times we get together are the ones I cherish the most."
Noctis smiled softly. "What, you wanna just hang out with your friends? Heh, you're Prompto all over again. He's the life of the party, always ready with a quip to make us smile."
He paused for a moment, almost hesitating to go on, but he looked up and decided he would continue. "We were traveling together, me and him, and a couple of others. Hearing your story, I couldn't help but be reminded of them.
"Well, I am glad that you have friends to go along your journey with. But now I must ask, what about your purpose?"
"...My purpose?" Noctis asked. "That's a tough one. I guess you could say… it's keeping a promise."
He started down at his cup, all of the memories and responsibilities coming back to the front of his mind. "But I can't do that while I'm here. I have to get back to my own world."
Leaning back in his chair he closed his eyes, thinking briefly before looking up at the stars. "Somehow…"
Peony hummed softly. "I'm awfully sorry if I brought any sadness upon you."
Noctis shook his head. "No, it's okay. Just didn't really think about it a whole lot before. I'll be okay though."
"Alright. Though, if I may ask, what was that name you said again? The one friend?"
"Oh? Prompto? What about that?" Noctis asked as he leaned forward in his chair.
"I'm not sure. It's just that the name reminds me of a friend I know by a similar name."
Noctis raised an eyebrow. "A similar name?"
"Yes. A friend I have is a Hyur that goes by the name Prom."
"A Hyur?"
"That is what you are. At least by my world's terminology."
"And… What does he look like?"
"He has blond hair, part of it falls down on the right side of his face," Peony said as she gestured her hand over the area on her face.
"No way," Noctis gasped. "That's similar to Prompto. Well I guess at least. There could be many blonds like that, but the name… that can't just be a coincidence can it?"
Peony shrugged. "I don't know. But if you would like, after we talk to Kipih tomorrow, we could go find Prom? He does live in Gridania so he could be home if we checked."
"Yeah, I wanna see this guy. Just to… you know, see how similar he is? If that even makes sense?"
Noctis couldn't even begin to wrap his head around the idea of there being someone even remotely similar to Prompto. His best friend was one in a million. Then again, he was on a whole other world. A whole other world with new things and strange races and monsters. Who was to say there couldn't be a coincidence?
"Maybe it's like those sci-fi movies Prompto and I used to watch. The ones about alternate realities with people having counterparts. Would that mean there is a me here too? Though, I really hope this isn't the world where it's our evil counterparts. That would totally suck."
By the next morning they went and talked to Kipih, reporting what they needed about the daemon encounter. With her needing to do more research, Noctis said he wanted to take a look around the town, just to explore while he was there.
Peony led him along through the city, telling him some facts here and there that she knew. Noctis tried to soak all of it in, wanting to admire this other world as best as he could. It felt so much more peaceful than back home. He figured part of that was probably due to the world being not as technologically advanced, but maybe that was what made it all the more beautiful.
If he wasn't so pressed for time he wished he could have stayed longer. He wanted to see the rest of this world if he didn't have his own world waiting for him.
Eventually they got to the residential district and headed down towards Prom's house. Noctis couldn't help but feel a little nervous. He shoved his hands into his pockets as they kept going forwards, all the way until they reached the house. Peony went forward to knock on the door, then all they had to do was wait. A moment later the door opened, and Noctis found himself holding his breath.
The man they were looking at did look similar to Prompto, but he was not a 100% identical. The hair was styled a little differently, but it was similar enough to feel like it was a Prompto-like style. But then on the other hand, the eyes almost looked the same. The guy even had freckles scattered across his face like Prompto did.
"Oh hey Peony! Nice to see you around!"
Noctis had to hold in his breath, trying not to overreact too much. He even sounded the same. He was sure of it!
"So what brings you around to…" Prom looked over at Noctis, his eyes widened. "Whoa what? Wait… N'oct?"
Before Noctis could answer, Peony held up her hands and quickly explained to Prom what the situation was. The shock and confusion faded quickly from his face and he started to laugh instead.
"Oh wow! I had heard some rumors going around about a guy like this. But I didn't think I would get the chance to see him! And he looks so much like my friend N'oct too!"
"Well uh," Noctis began to say. "I'm starting to think maybe there's some connection? My name's Noctis, but I usually go by Noct. And back home I got a friend named Prompto."
"Whoa. That is really something ain't it?" Prom asked as he stepped forward. "You think that means…?"
"That there are others?" Noctis finished. "Maybe? Only one way to find out."
"Well let's talk inside! Come on in!"
The three of them headed inside and went into the living room space to sit down.
Looking around, Noctis saw the place was cluttered with little knickknacks. There were all sorts of little devices as well as pieces of arts and crafts. Even if it was different things, it was still giving him very strong Prompto vibes.
After looking for a bit, Noctis decided to continue the conversation. "So about this Noct friend of yours…"
"N'oct."
Noctis tried to process how ever so slightly the names sounded different, but he didn't want to get into a whole discussion on it. "Yeah that. So he looks like me?"
"Yeah, though he is a Miqo'te, but his hair is nearly the same!"
Noctis nearly choked on the air itself. "I'm a… he's a cat-person?"
"Indeed he is! A Keeper of the Sun, like our good friend Peony here!" Prom beamed. "Though I swear he must be part Keeper of the Moon. He'll sleep all day if no one stops him."
Noctis snorted. "Well I guess some things never change. I guess it would make sense that I am actually cat-like in another world. If Gladio were here, he wouldn't stop making fun of me."
"Gladio?"
"You… don't have a friend named that? Gladiolus?"
Prom shook his head. "Not anyone by that name. Though, isn't that a type of flower?"
"It is," Noctis nodded.
"Well, I may not know anyone by that name. But I do have a friend named Bluomskylt."
"Blomskte?" Noctis said, his tongue feeling twisted as he spoke.
Prom shook his head. "Bluomskylt. Roegadyn always have such unique names, but it means Flower Shield."
"Is he a tall, bulky guy?"
"All Roegadyn are," Prom chuckled.
"Okay… what about hair? Uh, scars?"
"Oh yeah! Brown hair. Kind of long? He's got this one scar over his right eye."
Noctis raised his eyebrows. "Huh, really? Well… I guess not everything has to be completely identical. So that just leaves us with Ignis."
"Don't know about any Ignis. Peony met someone named Ignace up in the Coerthas region but I doubt they're the same person that you speak of. But if we truly have the same friends just by different names, then it must be Ignilloux!"
"Tall, smart, glasses?" Noctis asked.
"And the best cook in all of the Eorzea!" Prom added.
Noctis laughed before running a hand through his hair. "This is still so weird."
"You're telling me! If N'oct were here he would be so shocked!"
"Are you the only one in the area?"
Prom nodded. "Usually yeah. N'oct and Bluomskylt are always traveling around going on hunts and stuff. Ignilloux is actually from Gridania, but he's away in Limsa Lominsa for some culinary stuff. But when I see them again, you know I am so going to tell them this story."
"Same here… if I am able to get back."
"I'm sure we will do it," Peony pipped in. "We will find a way."
"Yeah! If you've got Peony by your side, you'll be home before you know it," Prom said cheerfully.
Noctis smiled. "Thanks."
Just as Noctis started getting up, ready to leave, he had a thought. "Oh, I should probably take a photo of us. Otherwise the others may not even believe me when I tell them."
"A… photo?" Prom asked. He looked at Peony who just shrugged.
"Here, I'll show you guys. Come over," Noctis said as he pulled out his phone.
After letting the two calm down from shock upon seeing such a strange device, he snapped a quick group photo of the three of them. He smiled at it as he let them stare with wide eyes. "Pretty cool right?"
"Never seen anything like it. A little freaky, but I guess cool too," Prom said.
"I have to agree, such a strange device. But it can hold memories of people you met that way?"
"Yeah, that's a way of saying it, Prompto would be better at explaining it. He's the photo guy in my group, so I need to take a lot to show him."
"I'm sure that you can! We still may have some time if you wish to gather more of those photos around Gridania," Peony offered.
"I was hoping to go out into the forest for a bit. Looked like there could be a nice fishing spot. Maybe on the way I could get some more pics. Speaking of photos…"
Noctis flicked through his gallery until he found one group photo of him and his friends. "There, now you can see what they look like."
Peony and Prom gathered close as they stared at the image on the phone.
Prom gasped as he stared at Prompto in the picture. "Oh! I see now what you mean. There may be some small differences, what with all of you looking like Hyurs, but I can see the resemblances!"
"Yeah. Guess there will have to be another time for me to see your friends."
"Oh of course! But you should go out to get your own photo things."
"Yes, let's go! I can show you the best spots to catch some really good fish," Peony offered.
"Now you're speaking my language," Noctis smiled.
"Have fun, you two," Prom said as he led them to the front door. "And good luck getting home. Say hi to my counterpart for me, okay?"
"I will," Noctis said with a wave before heading out.
Now with that, he could get back to exploring this strange other world. He began to one just who else could have a counterpart in this world, and what race they would be. It was an amusing thought for sure.
"Maybe one day when everything is taken care of at home, I can come back and explore a little more," Noctis hummed to himself.
