Hilter's Moustache: Thank you for pointing that out. I tried to go back and fix it. Also thank you for the suggestion! I actually took a bit of inspiration from it in this chapter, though I added a bit of my own twist to it!
Guest: Understandable. I realize it's a bit cliché so I don't blame you for not wanting to read it. It's just that this is by far the easiest way to have him interact with the main cast. I suppose I might have been able to get away with him being a teacher, but it just didn't feel right. Like attending school to become a huntsman to exterminate the Grimm is one thing, but becoming a teacher is another thing entirely. Because at that point he could just be a huntsman and start slaughtering Grimm nonstop which he would prefer over being a teacher at Beacon. Also this is a way for Ozpin to determine if he can trust Schwarz or not. I mean, I can't imagine he would be willing to tell a total stranger about Salem or her evil plans before determining if they were truly trustworthy or not. But that's just me. I respect your opinion on the matter.
Schwarz spent a while roaming around the school campus, trying to memorize its layout to the best of his abilities. It was surprisingly empty for a school. Back in Vinheim the college was packed to the brim all year round. Ozpin mentioned something about it being summer and that meant students wouldn't be present for quite some time. That would never have happened back in Vinheim. There were holidays of course but they only lasted a week at most, otherwise there were never any breaks in Vinheim. So seeing such an empty school was quite a surreal experience for him.
Some time later his scroll began to ring. Taking it out he looked at it and saw two symbols on the screen along with several illegible runes. One of the symbols was green while the other was red. Having no idea which button did what he just pressed the green button. He then held the device up to his ear and said, "Hello? Am I using this thing right?"
"Yes, you are. I'm in the library right now. Come meet me and we can get that list done." Ozpin's voice said, emanating from the device.
"Very well. I'm on my way now." Schwarz stated before lowering the scroll and heading towards the library.
Once he arrived, he met Ozpin there with another strange device of some sort. When he asked, Ozpin explained that it was something called a laptop and he would be using it to record everything Schwarz told him as it was much faster than writing everything out by hand. Schwarz accepted this explanation and sat down on the other side of the table before beginning to explain what signs to look out for in regards to hollowing and his past experiences with watching other undead slowly lose their minds and go hollow. Ozpin occasionally asked a few questions or requested clarification on a few points, which Schwarz was more than willing to answer or explain in more detail, but otherwise he remained silent and let Schwarz speak for the most part.
This process took several hours. When they were finally done Ozpin closed his laptop and said, "Thank you for your cooperation, Schwarz. You can rest assured that if you begin displaying any of these symptoms, we will take action. We will likely start with attempting to bring you back from the brink, but failing that we will most definitely use the sarcophagus you will be creating."
Schwarz smiled at him and nodded. "Thank you, sir. I appreciate it very much."
"Of course. Now, it's getting late. Follow me and I'll show you to the dorm you will be staying in during your first year here." Ozpin told him before getting up, holding his laptop under one of his arms.
Schwarz just nodded and followed after him. As soon as they left the building they were currently in, Schwarz saw it was dark outside. "Huh… Well that's a first." He muttered to himself.
"What is?" Ozpin inquired.
"This. It's night. Back in my world time is broken so day and night no longer operate in a cycle. Rather in certain areas it is perpetually day while in others it is perpetually night. You could be fighting a horde of hollows in the middle of noon in one area then walk a few dozen feet into another area and it would be midnight. It's been like that since long before I was born. So this is my first time seeing something like this happen naturally, without a god's involvement." Schwarz explained. He then looked up at the night sky and saw something he hadn't been expecting in the least. "Wait… What in the Abyss? Why is the moon broken?!"
"It's been like that for eons. No one knows for sure how it happened. Some suggest it was some sort of natural phenomenon while others say that the gods did it as some form of punishment." Ozpin explained, looking up at the moon himself.
"Hm… I always liked the moon, even though I killed Gwyndolin. It would be such a shame to just leave it like that." Schwarz stated, before coming to a stop.
"What do you mean by that?" Ozpin inquired, also coming to a stop and looking at Schwarz curiously.
Schwarz just drew his tin crystallization catalyst from his belt and said, "Observe." He then pointed his catalyst at the moon before casting a modified version of the repair spell. Suddenly a massive beam of bright white energy lanced forth from his catalyst towards the moon. Not even a second later the shattered moon began pulling itself back together. After a few seconds the spell ended and the moon was fully repaired. "There. Much better. Consider it repayment for giving me a purpose and assurance that I won't hurt anyone should I start going hollow."
Ozpin stared up at the moon in awe. "You really weren't lying when you said you've killed gods, were you?"
"Of course not. I have no reason to lie about such a thing and every reason to tell the truth. Did you not believe me?" Schwarz inquired.
Ozpin shook his head. "No. I honestly thought you were exaggerating to make yourself seem more dangerous than you really are… I see I was mistaken. How many souls did you have to consume to become this powerful, if you don't mind me asking?"
"I honestly lost count. Easily trillions. Probably a lot more than that." Schwarz explained.
"Your world really has enough people that you could consume trillions of souls?"
"No, not quite. As I told you, time is broken. So whenever I rested at a bonfire most things I killed besides a few particularly unique beings that could be considered temporal constants would come back. I consumed most of their souls many thousands of times over. And no I didn't lose the souls I consumed every time I rested at the bonfires, far from it."
Ozpin nodded in understanding then sighed and said, "Well, regardless, I'm sure there are hundreds of people who just saw that beam coming from Beacon Academy and fixing the moon. But even if they didn't it has just become significantly harder to keep your power a secret. People are going to notice that the moon is fixed."
"Is that bad? I can destroy it again if need be." Schwarz said, holding up his catalyst.
"No, no. Don't do that. It's going to be hard enough to explain this as it is, let alone if you destroyed the moon again. Besides which, I find it unlikely it would break in the same pattern as it did originally so people would know the difference. Just tell me the next time you plan to do something as major and globally relevant as this, that way I can tell you if it's a good idea or not before you do it." Ozpin told him.
"As you wish. My sincerest apologies, I genuinely thought I was doing good. I didn't intend to cause you any trouble." Schwarz said apologetically as he put his catalyst away.
"I realize. Well, it's too late to do anything about it now. Come on. Your dorm is this way." Ozpin said before turning and walking away. Schwarz followed him.
Over the next several months Schwarz was sent to various different locations to kill Grimm. However, whenever he wasn't fighting Grimm he was back at Beacon Academy either having his aura experimented on or learning not just their written language as he had originally planned but their spoken language as well. This was because after one of the first times he was sent to go kill Grimm he decided to switch the rings he was wearing. That was when he learned he was incapable of understanding anything anyone said to him while he wasn't wearing the Old Witch's ring. Thus he had to learn their spoken language just as much as their written language. In the meantime he was forced to wear his old witch's ring at all times.
He also spent some time teaching Ozpin, Glynda, and a few other huntsmen and huntresses that were apparently from other countries about sorcery. Some learned faster than others, Ozpin learned particularly fast, but all of them learned how to cast at least basic spells eventually. As the most basic form of sorcery used the power of the soul, even basic soul arrows proved to be quite effective against the weaker Grimm. Though several of the huntsmen and women were able to learn some more advanced concepts and spells. By the end of the summer break a select few even learned just enough to start experimenting on their own.
Just a single month after arriving in this world and coming to Beacon Academy he received a message from Ozpin. Apparently there had been some sort of accident with the humanity Schwarz had given Ozpin. So he was currently on his way to the facility, dressed in his full Black Iron armor and was wearing the covenant of Artorias which would let him traverse this new Abyss. He was also currently speaking to the head scientists who had been involved in the research over the scroll.
"So, first things first. How in the name of Izalith did you manage to get enough humanity to create a new Abyss in the first place? And I know something has to be controlling it all, as was the case in Oolacile. So I know you had to have tested it on a live subject. What was it? A human, an animal, or a Grimm?" Schwarz inquired.
"W-well… During one of our experiments we accidentally discovered that it was possible to endlessly duplicate the darkness or 'humanity' as you call it. So we did just that so we would have more to experiment with. Then we merged a significant amount of it into a single mass roughly the size of a Beowolf. Remarkably, when it was in such a large form it seemed to gain sentience like an animal! So, we didn't do any tests with it on living creatures, not directly at least… So, trying to find a use for it we introduced the largest mass we made to a few different creatures. It seemed to react to animals and even humans with curiosity but otherwise seemed remarkably friendly. However, when we introduced it to a Grimm, a Boarbatusk to be precise… It… It just seemed to get extremely angry and started lashing out. There was nothing we could do to stop it. It was completely out of control. The Grimm seemed to react in a similar manner. After they broke containment I didn't stick around long enough to see what happened but judging by what happened to the landscape surrounding the facility I don't think the Grimm survived that engagement." The scientist explained.
"I see. Fascinating. Well, I suppose that would suggest the darkness of humanity is diametrically opposed to the darkness of the Grimm. I suppose it makes sense as humanity is just another type of soul and the Grimm are hostile towards anything with a soul so why wouldn't the reverse also be true? Perhaps if that hostility can be harnessed and more focused in some way it could be used to create powerful soldiers to oppose the Grimm? I think that perhaps one of the main issues you faced here was the fact this mass of humanity was only as intelligent as a mere animal. Perhaps if it had the intelligence of an actual human being, it would have killed the Grimm while not going out of control?" Schwarz suggested.
"That… That actually makes sense, in a way… Hm… You said it's just another type of soul, right? So do you think it might be able to be put into something like, say, a robot? An Artificial Intelligence?" The scientist inquired.
"Perhaps. It's definitely something to ponder and perhaps look into under a much more controlled environment. Though remember, it's humanity. So the closer its vessel is to a human the better, even if it is just in shape alone." Schwarz stated. "Hm… That just gave me a good idea that I'll have to bring up to Ozpin once I get back to Beacon."
"Understood. I'll take note of that. Huh…? Oh. One moment. My superior is telling me something." The scientist told him. Schwarz then heard a short muffled conversation on the other end of the call. Finally the scientist said, "Apparently, if possible, he wants you to at least try to calm down the subject and bring it back alive. It's what most of our stock of darkness went into. He also wants you to try to find and retrieve the soul from the facility. That one's more of a requirement than a request."
Schwarz just rolled his eyes underneath his helmet. "Tell your superior I'll do what I can but not to expect much. However, if you're out of humanity or if the soul is lost to you forever I can just provide new ones. I'm the one who gave them to Ozpin in the first place."
"One moment." Schwarz then heard another brief muffled conversation. "General Ironwood is relieved to hear that but he would still like for you to capture the subject alive if possible."
"Like I said, I'll do what I can, but much of what happens depends on the mass of humanity itself. Anyways, that's all I needed to know. I'll have Ozpin call Ironwood after I'm finished here. Once everything is under control here, you can send someone to Beacon to pick up whatever I retrieve from the facility." With that Schwarz hung up the call.
Taking Artorias's Greatsword out of his bottomless box, he examined it for a moment. "It seems I'll be doing the Abyss Walker's work for him once again. It may not be Manus but I'll make sure I actually kill the beast this time."
He waited for another three hours before the voice of the pilot said, "The place is swarming with monsters. It's too dangerous to land. I'll try to get as low as I can but you're going to have to jump."
Hearing this Schwarz stood up and cast Fall Control on himself. A few moments later the door of the Bullhead opened up. He then jumped out with the Greatsword of Artorias in hand and did a plunging attack right on top of one of the monsters. He then immediately spun and cleaved a few more in half. He was then pelted by bullets from a few of the monsters he assumed used to be the guards of this facility. Raising his catalyst he cast a spell that caused individual pillars of crystal to erupt from the ground beneath them, impaling them. Continuing on into the facility he found the inside to be much the same as the entrance to the Abyss had been back in Oolacile. There were even the giant humanities just like last time.
He slaughtered his way through the facility until he finally reached the epicenter, where he found the creature that was controlling this new Abyss. It appeared to have grown slightly as it was now a bit larger than a beowolf. It vaguely resembled the giant humanities Schwarz had encountered but it actually had arms and legs and looked humanoid. It took a hostile stance like a cornered animal the moment it saw him. If it were capable of making noise Schwarz was certain it would have been growling or hissing at him.
"Well, you're certainly big." Schwarz said in a calm tone. He doubted he would be able to calm it down and bring it back alive but he would do as he said and at least make an attempt. Lowering the Greatsword of Artorias he said, "I'm not here to hurt you, see? Just calm down. I promise no Grimm will hurt you again."
He then attempted to take a few cautious steps forwards but the moment he got within twenty feet it slammed the ground and caused about twenty more giant humanities to appear, all of which then began flying towards Schwarz.
At this point Schwarz sighed and raised Artorias' Greatsword again. "If this is the way it has to be, so be it." He then jumped into action and began cleaving the giant humanities to pieces with his greatsword and casting spells with his Tin Crystallization Catalyst.
As he was slaughtering the giant humanities he noticed that more and more of them kept appearing. In fact for every one he killed at least three more would take its place. He was slowly being overwhelmed by numbers. So he lowered his greatsword and cast a devastating spell that obliterated all of the giant humanities all at once.
The humanity monster didn't like this and thus it grabbed him and threw him hard enough that he was sent crashing through walls and even solid ground until he burst all the way to the surface outside the mostly underground facility again. Finally hitting the ground again and coming to a stop, he groaned in pain. This thing was a lot stronger than he had expected. In fact he wouldn't have been surprised if it was as powerful as Manus had been when they first fought back in Oolacile. He was actually going to have to take this somewhat seriously.
Getting back up to his feet he took a swig from his Estus flask. As he put the flask away, he felt the ground rumbling and was surprised to see the humanity monster burst through the hole he created to the surface. Along with it came what appeared to be hundreds of giant humanities.
"Shit!" He cursed as he raised his catalyst and cast a spell to cause crystal soul spears to rain from the sky and obliterate the giant humanities. Due to their close proximity this had the added bonus of wounding the humanity monster. However, this only seemed to make it even angrier. Suddenly a wave of pure darkness erupted from the monster and engulfed everything.
Schwarz then found himself unable to see absolutely anything. He tried to use the spell Cast Light but even that failed to illuminate this all consuming darkness. Suddenly he felt his vitality being drained by the gods only knew how many giant humanities. If he didn't do something fast he knew he was going to die in a matter of moments. So he jumped away from the giant humanities and cast a spell that unleashed a massive burst of soul energy in all directions. He had no idea if that had done anything but it should have destroyed this wave of giant humanities at the very least.
Suddenly what felt like a massive fist smashed him into the ground, causing an explosion of dirt and dust as his body was used to dig what was assuredly a massive crater in the ground. Growling angrily, he cast a spell that made a veritable sea of razor sharp crystals erupt from the ground all around him. He had no idea where anything was or even how to fight when he couldn't see, nor hear, nor even so much as smell his enemy but he imagined that if he attacked in every direction simultaneously he was bound to hit something.
"I don't know where you are, but I'm starting to get angry. Don't you dare think I'm just going to let y—" He was cut off as his entire body was suddenly engulfed in agony as something erupted from the ground beneath him. Screaming in a mixture of rage and pain he cast one of the most devastating spells he had ever cast in the heat of the moment.
Suddenly the ground began to tremble violently as razor sharp crystals the size of castle towers erupted from the ground everywhere in a one mile radius. Meanwhile millions of burning crystal soul spears began raining from the sky. After a few seconds of this, all of the pillars of crystal that were within two hundred feet of Schwarz exploded like bombs sending shards of crystal flying everywhere like shrapnel. The pillars outside of that two hundred foot radius were completely unaffected by that final stage of Schwarz's spell. Regardless, very few beings would have been able to survive such a devastating barrage.
However when the spell was over, the darkness did not lift, signifying to Schwarz that the creature was still alive somehow. Perhaps it had jumped back in the hole it used him to make when the soul spears started raining from the sky? That was the only possible way he could think of that could have allowed it to escape the pillars exploding. Still it had bought him a few moments. He very quickly took a swig of estus to heal his wounds.
Almost in the same moment as he finished putting the Estus Flask away it felt like he was being impaled by spears from every direction simultaneously. Worse, the unseen spears felt like they were draining his vitality even faster than the giant humanities had been. At this point he was actually starting to panic. If he couldn't see or otherwise sense the creature at all he genuinely wasn't sure if he could actually beat it or not. It wasn't that it was more powerful than him, he knew that much for a fact. It was only about as powerful as Manus had been during their first encounter. But at least with Manus he had been able to see him. With this creature, however, he couldn't even seriously hurt it since he had no idea where it even was!
He continued casting spells and trying to fight but the longer this went on the more his panic and physical agony grew until eventually something inside him snapped. Suddenly it was as though he could feel the darkness all around him and knew he could control it as if were just an extension of himself. Thus he took all of it and ripped it all to pieces before taking the now separate pieces and molding them however he saw fit. Some of the pieces he had turned into weapons such as swords, spears, axes, and maces while others he turned into 'soldiers' wielding weapons of their own. As he did this, his vision started to clear as the darkness of the Abyss was broken apart and molded into the forms he desired.
He then saw the creature on top of the roof of the facility. It's body language indicated that it was confused and very scared.
Taking a quick look around at his "army" Schwarz finally glared at the creature and had the floating weapons of solidified darkness or humanity fly up and start attacking it like a swarm of angry bees. It started trying to swat them away but only ended up hurting itself more as it was cut and stabbed by them. Eventually it lost balance and fell off of the roof. As soon as it did, Schwarz had his 'soldiers' rush forwards and start attacking it.
It flailed around crushing and destroying a few of the abyssal constructs, and conjured up more giant humanities to assist it. Eventually all of Schwarz's constructs were destroyed and while he knew he could create more if he wanted he didn't bother. Instead he approached the creature and used his newfound power over humanity to rip the majority of the humanity that made it up away from it. He then proceeded to rip the excess humanity apart, breaking it into thousands of individual humanities the size of the one he gave to Ozpin.
When that was done, all that was left was a being of pure humanity a bit shorter than Schwarz himself. It looked up at him in pure terror and backed away in fear as he slowly continued to approach it. Eventually it tripped over a particularly large shard of crystal left over from Schwarz's previous cataclysmic spell and fell on its behind. Even then it continued backing away in fear until its back came in contact with the ruined wall of the top level of the facility. At that point its glowing white eyes vanished and it raised its arms in front of it in a defensive manner as if in an attempt to ward off a blow.
Once he got within arms reach of the creature Schwarz kneeled down and held out a hand to help it up. "Come now. Let's put an end to this, shall we? Unlike Manus you don't actually seem insane. If anything you seem more like a scared animal acting on instinct. So I'm not going to hurt you any more than I already have, and I only did that because you attacked me first." He said in a calm tone.
The creature opened its eyes again and looked at him. Realizing he wasn't going to hurt it, it hesitantly relaxed. It then looked at his hand curiously as if not sure what to do with it. At that point Schwarz rolled his eyes underneath his helmet and grabbed its hand before pulling it back up to its feet. It seemed startled by this for a moment but relaxed once again when it realized he wasn't actually attacking it.
"There you go. See? I'm neither a Grimm nor an enemy. In fact, if anything, I'm like you. After all, we both have the same progenitor. Though admittedly I'm not on the best of terms with him. Hm… Here, as a sign of friendship, to prove there's no ill will between us, have this." He then fed it a small portion of the humanity he had accumulated over the eons. "See? I truly mean you no harm."
It then looked at him before walking over to the thousands of humanity littering the ground that used to be part of itself. It then gathered up a few of the fragments before bringing them back to Schwarz and giving him what he could only assume was an expectant look.
Schwarz raised an eyebrow under his helmet but slowly raised a hand and took one of the humanities. When the creature didn't react he said, "So this is for me, I presume? Well it was supposed to be a one way gift but, I accept." He then crushed the humanity in his hand and consumed it before manipulating the rest of the humanity in its arms with what he could only assume was his semblance and consuming them as well. Judging by the creature's body language it seemed pleased by this.
Chuckling, Schwarz raised a hand and patted the creature on the head. It seemed surprised by this but returned the gesture and patted him on the head as well. Well, it patted the top of his heavily damaged Black Iron helmet but Schwarz didn't mind and he didn't think the creature did either so that was fine.
Suddenly both of them heard howling. Looking in the direction of the howling Schwarz saw a pack of Beowolfs approaching rapidly, likely having been drawn in by his anger and the creature's fear.
The humanity creature's stance immediately became hostile and it looked like it was about to charge at the creatures but Schwarz raised a hand in front of it and said, "Ah, no. I think you've had enough interaction with the Grimm for now. Please, allow me to handle this." He then raised his catalyst and fired a few basic crystal soul spears at them, killing the Grimm before they could get even close to the two of them.
"There. They most certainly won't be a problem any more. Now, I have to go back into this facility to retrieve the soul and the original humanity I gave Ozpin for research purposes. So you can either wait out here for me to come back or you can come with me. Up to you." Schwarz stated before turning and walking back towards the facility. Unsurprisingly the humanity creature followed him like a lost puppy.
It took him a while in the now abyssal labyrinth of what was once a research facility but he eventually found both the soul and the original humanity sample. They were both in what appeared to be portable glass containers. So he picked up the containers and put them in his bottomless box. When that was done, he and the humanity creature went back up to the surface where he proceeded to call Ozpin.
"Hello? Lord Ozpin, sir, I've completed the mission. I would just head to the designated extraction point but uh… There's a bit of a mess. Thousands of humanity are scattered everywhere across the ground outside of the facility. I'm going to need a few storage containers to put them all in. Because if I put them all in my bottomless box as they are, they would get mixed up with my own stock of humanity. Also, if you could, please call General Ironwood and inform him I am done here and have captured the creature alive." Schwarz requested.
"Very well. I'll send a Bullhead with the crates right away. Though, would you care to explain all the seismic activity that took place in your location or the massive crystal pillars that appeared everywhere in a one mile radius of the facility?" Ozpin inquired in a calm but slightly annoyed tone.
Schwarz grimaced and scratched the back of his head nervously. "Well… Uh… You see, the creature was highly aggressive and was harder to beat than I expected. So I was forced to take some, uh… desperate measures."
"Really? It was strong enough to make you desperate? The man who killed gods and fixed the moon?" Ozpin inquired, sounding genuinely surprised by this.
"Well, it was as powerful as Manus was the first time we fought in the Abyss of Oolacile. However it had one advantage over me that Manus didn't." Schwarz stated.
"That being?" Ozpin asked.
"Well, it engulfed the area in the darkness of the Abyss and made it impossible for me to see. It also doesn't make any noise when it moves, nor does it have a smell of any sort. So I was effectively fighting it with absolutely no idea where it was the entire time I was fighting it. I was actually genuinely worried that I couldn't beat it. That was, until I unlocked what I believe to be my semblance." Schwarz explained
"You did? What is it, if I may ask?"
"I can produce and control the dark. However, I believe this extends only to the dark related to humanity. I'm not so sure that I can control regular darkness. However, I can even turn the dark into weapons or use it to create an entire army of dark constructs. It would be easier to just show you what I mean. But I used it to rip most of the humanity away from the creature and break it into pieces. Thus the mess."
"Interesting. That sounds like quite a powerful ability. I am eager to see it in person. But for now, it seems I have to call General Ironwood and inform him of your success. I'll be seeing you back at the Academy in several hours." Ozpin said before hanging up.
Schwarz then looked at the humanity creature and said, "Well it seems we'll be here for a while. What do you think we should do to pass the time?"
The creature just tilted its head curiously.
"No ideas? None at all? Hm… Ah, I know!" Schwarz then reached into his bottomless box and pulled out two basic longswords, both of which were in pristine condition. He then handed one of the swords to the creature hilt first.
The humanity entity examined the sword curiously for a moment before hesitantly grabbing it and taking it from him. It then examined the sword a bit more closely.
"Since we have nothing better to do, how about I teach you the basics of how to use a sword? Well, if you're even capable of learning how to use a sword that is… Well regardless, just watch me and copy my stance and movements." Schwarz told it. He knew that it probably couldn't understand a word he said and most definitely couldn't say anything back to him, but training it in the basics of swordplay was better than sitting around doing nothing for three hours.
He then began showing it some basic stances and movements. Whenever he finished with one stance or movement, it would try to copy him. He would then correct its stance or movements whenever it made a mistake and would calmly explain to it what it was doing wrong and how to fix it, even though he knew it was incapable of understanding him. It actually showed significant improvement in the few hours they had to train before the Bullhead with the crates finally arrived, it was a surprisingly fast learner for something with the intellect of an animal.
When the bullhead finally arrived, Schwarz pulled a sheath for the longsword and a belt out of his bottomless box. He then helped it put on the belt and sheath before showing it how to sheath its sword. He decided to let it keep the sword since he had plenty more just like it inside his bottomless box. With that done, he proceeded to collect all of the humanity that was scattered everywhere and put it all into the crates for storage. When that was over, he and the humanity creature boarded the Bullhead and began the flight back to beacon. Since they were unable to continue training with swords inside the Bullhead, Schwarz instead pulled a book and one of his new pins out of his bottomless box. So he spent the time showing the creature some of the more interesting schematics he had written in the book — all of which were inspired by the technology he had seen in Remnant — and even let it watch as he drew yet another schematic.
Eventually they arrived back at Beacon Academy and Schwarz had to put his book and pen away. As they exited the Bullhead together Schwarz saw Professor Ozpin standing next to a man in a clean white suit. They appeared to have been waiting for him.
"Greetings Lord Ozpin. Greetings…" Schwarz said, looking at the man in hopes he would provide his name.
"General Ironwood. I see you brought the subject back alive, though it's significantly smaller than I remember. Also, why is it carrying a sword?" General Ironwood inquired.
"The rest of it is in the crates inside the Bullhead. Also, while I was waiting for the Bullhead to arrive with the crates I decided to teach it some of the basics of swordplay. It was just a way to pass the time. It's a surprisingly fast learner. It's by no means a master at swordsmanship just yet, but it knows which end to hold the sword by. I decided to let it keep the sword so I gave it a belt and a sheath to carry it and taught it how to properly sheath the sword. Anyways, here's the soul and humanity you wanted me to retrieve." Schwarz explained before removing the glass containers from his bottomless box and handing them to General Ironwood.
"Thank you, your assistance in this matter. I'm pleasantly surprised it was able to learn how to use a sword. I suspect it may actually be quite a bit more intelligent than we initially gave it credit for. That should actually make things quite a bit easier." General Ironwood stated.
Schwarz nodded. "Of course. However, I wouldn't recommend feeding it so much humanity next time. If it or any other such being goes out of control and has that much power they can cause a significant amount of devastation in the time it would take to bring me to the location to deal with it. Fortunately this facility was far from any cities or settlements so the overall damage was minimal but the point remains. Also, just so you're aware, after our battle some Grimm tried to attack us and it almost tried to charge at them. I stopped it and killed the Grimm myself but it appeares quite hostile towards the creatures. So I would recommend keeping it away from them for the time being."
"Noted. We'll keep that in mind. Say, you wouldn't happen to have any other particularly interesting items for us to study, would you? We would be willing to compensate you for each new and unique item." General Ironwood inquired.
"Hm… Well, I suppose that depends on what you mean by interesting. I have enchanted arrows that can be fired from a bow which deal damage magically rather than physically, crossbow bolts infused with lightning, I have a divine blessing which instantly heals all wounds and cures all ailments with the exception of curses, a few thousand prism stones which glow and emit a high pitched noise depending on how far they're dropped, some powder that instantly repairs all equipment, a few transient curses which allows one to injure and kill ghosts for a limited time, a few magic plants and mosses with various effects such as helping get one's stamina back up, curing any sort of poison instantly, and immediately stopping all bleeding when consumed, a few types of pine resin which when applied to weapons imbues them with various effects depending on the resin in question, and a mushroom that speeds up the healing process drastically for about thirty seconds, as well as numerous different types of titanite which can be used to reinforce weapons and even imbue them with different effects permanently, and a few different types of soapstones with different effects though I'm not sure if they would be useful in this world since time isn't broken here. Oh! And I also have a few embers that blacksmiths can use to ascend weapons beyond their normal limits that I never got around to giving to any of the blacksmiths in Lordran or Anor Londo."
"I'll take two of each that you have two of. Though I will also accept individual items if you only have one of any of the things you just listed. Also, Ozpin told me you are capable of making more items similar to this bottomless box of yours. I would also appreciate it if you could make such a box for us." General Ironwood stated.
"I'll give you five of most of them since I spent time gathering as many of each that I could. I'm a bit of a hoarder when it comes to useful items However, as you said, I only have one of a few of them. So I'm willing to accept the compensation and give you these things. Though I would also like to request that once you learn how to use the embers and how to infuse weapons with titanite you will allow me to enhance some of my weapons, if possible." Schwarz requested.
General Ironwood raised a hand to his chin in thought for a moment. "Hm… Well you'd probably have to come to Atlas to do that since we would be the ones studying most of these items, but I suppose such an arrangement can be made. So we'll inform you once we've figured out how these embers work, then all you'll need to do is come visit Atlas and we'd be more than willing to help you with your weapons."
Schwarz nodded and said, "Very well." He then took out his catalyst and cast a spell. Suddenly a small crystal box roughly the same size at the undead's bottomless box appeared on the ground at his feet. He then cast another spell on the box before putting his catalyst away and picking up the crystalline box. "Here, hold this for me please." He requested opening the box and handing it to Ironwood.
He then began taking all of the items he listed out of his own bottomless box and transferred them to Ironwood's crystalline bottomless box. When he was done he closed both boxes and said, "Now all you need to do to withdraw them is to reach in and think about the item you wish to withdraw. Don't worry about forgetting anything inside. Part of the enchantment fills your mind with a list of the box's contents so you'll never forget anything that's inside."
"Wonderful. Thank you very much. I'm sure we will learn a lot from all of these items and will be able to put what we learn to good use. I'll be sure to have the payment for all of these objects transferred to a bank account for you. You'll be able to connect this account to your scroll so you'll be able to view its balance any time you wish. You should even be able to pay for things using your scroll, so there's that too." General Ironwood informed him.
"Much appreciated. I'm happy to help. Anything to exterminate the Grimm." Schwarz said with a friendly smile.
"Alright well, my men seemed to have finished loading the crates onto one of our Bullheads so I should be going now. It was a pleasure to finally be able to meet you in person." Ironwood stated.
"And you as well, Lord Ironwood." Schwarz responded.
"Subject 001, follow me. It's time we got going." Ironwood ordered the humanity entity before turning and walking a few steps before realizing that it wasn't following him. Turning to look at it in confusion he said, "001, it's time for us to go. Come on."
The humanity entity just stared at him curiously, clearly not understanding what he said. Sighing, General Ironwood walked over and took it by the hand before attempting to lead it away. However it resisted and grabbed Schwarz's hand.
"Hm… It seems to have taken a liking to you. That's a bit of a problem." General Ironwood said, frowning at the creature.
"Yes, I can see that. My sincerest apologies, it was never my intention to have it grow attached to me in any capacity… I have an idea." Schwarz said. He then looked at the humanity entity and said, "It's alright. We'll see eachother again, I'm sure, but for now you need to go with the General here. I'm certain he or someone else in the Atlesian military can teach you swordsmanship." He then motioned to the general.
The humanity entity still didn't seem to want to let go of Schwarz's hand.
Schwarz sighed and very gently pried its hand off of him. He then patted it on the head before reaching into his bottomless box and pulling out a humanity, which he then handed to it. "Go on." He said before stepping back a bit to get out of its range.
It consumed the humanity before looking back towards him and seeing he was now just out of reach. It appeared dejected by this but seeing Schwarz's smile it reluctantly followed General Ironwood away. Schwarz waved goodbye and the creature returned the gesture.
Notes: So that was fun to write! What do you guys think is going to happen to the humanity creature? I already have a plan in mind but I would love to hear your theories! Well, I guess it's sort of obvious what's going to happen if you payed attention to details but, I digress.
Anyways, I hope you all liked this chapter! I am more than open to constructive criticism, so if you have any issues with what I wrote feel free to tell me!
