Chapter 15: Moves So Slowly
–
Sebastian jumped at the sound of the scream, his defenses instantly up and ready to fight whatever threatened them. He spun and brandished his fists, crouching in front of Kurt. Kurt reached out and placed a hand on his back. "It's the neighbor." Kurt pointed out as the people ran straight passed them and into the area of the room that was curtained off from view.
He didn't relax though he did turn back to Kurt and slid his hands around Kurt's outstretched one again. He pressed a kiss onto the back of it then Kurt's palm, pressing his lips to all parts of that hand, wrist and arm that he could access. Kurt giggled as it tickled in his drugged state.
Completely floored that Kurt could still laugh at a time like this, Sebastian stopped and stared at him. "What?" Kurt asked, not comprehending what Sebastian's dumbfounded look was about.
Sebastian shook his head, not wanting to disrupt this lighter attitude. They'd have plenty of time to unpack what had happened at the loft. Rachel wouldn't stop talking about it until they cut out her tongue. He could wait to bring it up. He placed his cheek in Kurt's opened palm and just stared at him, so glad he was given the chance to still look upon him, that those eyes were gazing right back at him, even heavy lidded.
The nurse was craning her neck to try and see what was happening. She had a job to do with Kurt but she also wanted to be involved, help the others out. She winced at Kurt's giggle but didn't say anything, there was no way anyone could hear him over the other sounds. She knew better than most that the cocktail of drugs had strange reactions.
"Clear!" A sound of a thud as the body jerked and then the faint sound beeping. The room was emptied out of employees shortly after. "He's stable." Someone said a tad too loud but wasn't quieted and they'd continue to monitor him.
He didn't know how long they'd sat there, just communicating so much to each other with just their eyes when Kurt's heart monitor spiked and Sebastian looked to the nurse in shock. She glanced at it with a frown, his heart was racing.
"How's he doing?" A male voice that acted as a bucket of ice water being poured over his head had him turning his head to the entry. Blaine stood, propped up by the doorway, a patch on his cheekbone and another wrapped around around his head. He had a very dark, large bruise covering his lower jaw from where Sebastian smashed the bat into it. He had hoped he'd at least broken Blaine's jaw or teeth. Blaine squinted at him as if he was in a lot of pain and tried smiling at him and there were some missing teeth after all.
Good, Sebastian wanted him to be in a lot of pain. "Get out of here." He growled his warning fiercely and Kurt's heart was still beating erratically. He squeezed Kurt's hand reassuringly, he was there, they were in a public area at a hospital with known police officers milling about. "You're not allowed to be within a hundred feet of us."
"Since when?" Blaine asked reaching up to rest his hand against his forehead as if that would do anything but act as a placebo.
"Since you attacked Kurt."
"Attacked Kurt? What are you talking about? I would never attack Kurt." Blaine frowned deeply. "He's my best friend." He turned his head to see around Sebastian and saw that Kurt was awake. "Hey!" He greeted softly, gently, as if he had a right to even talk to Kurt.
Sebastian moved to block Blaine's view of Kurt and maybe also to block Kurt's view of Blaine. Their hands disconnected as he did so.
His heart beating so fast was worrisome to Sebastian. The nurse appeared to be worried too and she got off of her stool and stood next to Kurt's bed, reaching out to rest a hand on his arm and his heartbeat jumped and raced even faster. Sebastian glanced back at them, wondering what happened.
The nurse patted his arm and pulled a syringe out of her pocket and inserted it into his IV drip. It didn't work quickly or well but slowly his heart rate slowed and he tried to keep his eyes open to keep an eye on Blaine. She turned to Blaine, having said nothing while she worked or even tried to calm Kurt with words. "Perhaps it'd be best if you stayed away." She said to the newcomer. "He is in a fragile state and for some reason you set him off." She was eying Blaine as if she knew exactly what that 'some reason' was. She wasn't far off the mark.
"We're best friends!" Blaine shouted in protest and she shushed him for Kurt and the other patient in the room's benefit. Sebastian could kiss her if he could handle a female within touching distance.
"Not anymore. You crossed so many lines, you should be in jail, alone. You almost sentenced me to that fate if he were to have died, both literally and figuratively. As it stands, you're not welcomed here." He took a menacing step toward Blaine and Kurt's hand sought out his desperately, not wanting Sebastian far from him, terrified even while greatly sedated. It just poured acid onto something within him, Blaine had done this to Kurt.
"I think I'll stay put until he tells me that."
"I'm telling you, you should not be here." The nurse butted in. "My first concern is the patient, whether or not they can communicate what they're feeling verbally. It is obvious that he does not want you here either. He does want this gentleman's presence though." She glanced at their joined hands pointedly, where Sebastian was squeezing Kurt's hand tightly in reassurance.
"I was just looking for an update on his condition. It was pretty scary being jumped like that."
Sebastian flinched back as he thought he heard incorrectly. "What did you say?" Sebastian couldn't believe Blaine would try to spin this like that. There was no way to collaborate that claim and once Kurt was a credible witness again, he'd be telling his entire side of the story and would be believed.
"Yeah, how else you explain why we're both pretty beat up?" Blaine gestured at his face and then at Kurt.
"Uh... how about your skin is under his fingernails because he fought to get away from you?" Sebastian didn't know if he still had the DNA there, but it was easy enough to confirm when the bleeding ended on Blaine's cheek. That was not a simple scratch, it was done with intent. It was done by someone employing anything they could to get free. It was done by someone who was terrified for their life and was attempting to survive.
"No, that's not what happened." Blaine waved it off. "I don't know how your imagination gets away from you sometimes like that. You see shadows where there's only light. Maybe it's just an after image that you're seeing because it's too bright? And you don't trust good things or like them much, do you? You prefer the bad."
"Seriously?" Sebastian's voice started to rise and he squashed it harshly but his voice did not lose it's intensity. "I found you trying to cut my fiance's pants off with a knife as you pinned him to the ground and struggling to get free. I called the cops and they found all of us in your loft. There's no gray area on issue of what went down. Save your breath trying to pin this one on someone else."
"The fire-escape was open, someone attacked Kurt and I and escaped that way. You're misinterpreting everything else. I was protecting Kurt with that knife from the attacker."
"Who was the attacker then? What did he want?" Sebastian asked dryly, trying to see how he'd spin that.
"Kurt, of course. The mall Santa has hit on other guys before and run off with all their goodies after doing some bad things to them. Kurt's famous and rich and he probably knew Kurt would be exposed there."
"It's not Christmas." Sebastian said dryly. "That's been over for months now."
"True but that guy is still running around, using his utter sexiness to seduce unsuspecting men. Maybe he was wearing a different unsuspecting outfit."
Sebastian didn't dare close his eyes, he didn't give Blaine that much of his trust. He still sought and asked for patience if only for Kurt's emotional state. Kurt was the last person who would ever cheat. "Yeah, like the face of a former friend." There were so many holes in that explanation, not that Sebastian would let himself even entertain the possibility of pretending to believe Blaine for his sake.
But it did make Sebastian wonder if Blaine cheated on Karofsky with the Mall Santa a few months ago and had lost quite a bit? He was rich enough to replace things quickly.
Kurt tugged on Sebastian's hand, he was struggling to sit up and Sebastian didn't dare turn toward him but he did back up a step so Kurt could use him as a support. A gasp of pain nearly had him spinning but the nurse was already there, pressing him back down. "There's a big bruise on the small of your back. I'm not surprised you didn't feel it earlier with all the medication but you're going to start feeling it more and more as they wear off. Would you like more?" She asked, tempted to give him more sedatives but not while he perceived a threat to be present. It would just cause hallucinations and she didn't want to be the cause of that.
"Leave, now." Kurt ordered though his voice wasn't as strong as it had been before, it still had steel running through it.
Sebastian lifted a brow toward Blaine. "You're harassing the victim and witness. I've already called a buddy of mine from law school and they're writing up emergency restraining orders and getting them passed right now. You will not be allowed to be near neither of us or any of Kurt's family without breaking the law and getting yourself serious jail time. Even if we lose the trial, which we won't, you won't be allowed anywhere near us."
The nurse came around the bed and she was even shorter than Blaine but pushed him out the door. "You heard the men. If you don't listen to us, I will bring in security." She didn't even have to touch him, her presence and commanding attitude did it for her.
"You really did that?" Kurt asked in French and Sebastian didn't turn toward him, just moved back to the chair so he could keep an eye on the door and see Kurt at the same time.
"No, but I should." Sebastian reached for his phone with his other hand and sent a quick text to a friend, giving pertinent details. The phone chimed and he risked glancing at it.
On it.
It chimed again. Send my love to Kurt.
"Who?" Kurt asked but his voice sounded to be in a lot more pain than he had been and Sebastian finally looked away from the door to let his eyes rake over his fiance's face. It was a lot more pinched than before and Sebastian stroked Kurt's forehead with his thumb.
"Oh honey, let them give you some more medication, yes?" He was ready to track down that nurse or someone else, but that meant leaving Kurt alone, which he wouldn't do. Kurt knew all his law buddies, they'd gone out to eat often enough. He shared a grin with Kurt, knowing he'd get a kick out of this when he was in the right frame of mind. "Jeremiah."
While the guy was older than Kurt and Sebastian by a few years, Sebastian and Jeremiah had ironically become friends after that day at the Gap when they'd talked. It hadn't happened instantly but they'd run into each other a few times over the next two years and had bonded over their hatred of Blaine. Then just became friends. He had grown close with Kurt too, even forgiving Kurt for his rude comments.
Kurt did offer a small smile at the name and the meaning behind it. Jeremiah had moved out to New York about 2 years ago. He was sick of Ohio and wanted a different scene for a little while. He was unlikely to stay forever, but he was learning how to be cutthroat and all the ins and outs from the best and would then bring it with him back to Ohio or wherever he ended up. He would be defending the little guy, like he'd been when he nearly got fired because of Blaine's actions, for being gay. If he hadn't gotten lucky with having a father who was a lawyer, he may have been fired.
The nurse returned and Sebastian glanced from her to Kurt once more. "Meds?" Kurt felt weak already but he nodded, the pain was incredible. Sebastian frowned and bent to press a kiss to that tensed forehead and looked to the nurse. "He'd like more pain meds."
The nurse came closer and looked to Kurt. "Is that true?" She took her job seriously and Kurt nodded. "Ok, just a little more for now." She pulled out another syringe and added that to his IV too. She recapped it and put it back into her pocket. She patted him on the arm. "You'll feel better soon, just no quick movements, all right?"
"What happened to Blaine?" Sebastian asked when Kurt's eyes closed again and he stroked Kurt's hair, fingers running lightly against his scalp and the smallest of smiles was on Kurt's face at the pleasure of the feeling. He didn't want to disturb Kurt with the name but he needed to know. There was a large bandage above one of his eyes, replacing the one Kurt had tacked on smartly. He had such incredible wherewithal to think about that while in fear of his life and physical well-being.
"I have security sitting with him." She explained and looked over Kurt's face with a frown. He was sleeping peacefully now, or at least appeared to be that way, it wasn't the easiest to tell with all the bruising and cuts on his face and lip. "It would be hard to imagine such little guys hurting each other like that if I hadn't seen the fallout for myself."
Kurt was incredibly thin. He'd always been that way but he did eat and ate well, when he remembered to. He had muscles for days throughout his body, sleek, non-body builder muscles but so many more muscles than most people could dare dream of getting and would have been jealous of if he showed them off. He had dancer muscles. His height was just above average.
Blaine too wasn't exactly short. Blaine was average height, Sebastian wanted to point out. So not exactly a little guy but he had narrow hips that could make him appear smaller and a wide set of shoulders which also somehow added to that illusion, especially while standing next to bigger guys. He got his mother's Asian hips and his father's Northern European shoulders. The facial hair from his father between the bushy eyebrows and the ability to grow a very full beard and his hair color from his mother. The rest was a balance between the two of them.
"It wasn't like they'd gotten into a fight and it just went too far for them to both end up in the hospital." Sebastian's voice was cold, he'd thought the nurse was one of their advocates, but now she was blaming Kurt.
She looked at him startled. "No, I didn't think that. It's obvious that the other was the attacker but your man is so incredibly strong and tough. I've seen bigger guys go down with fewer hits and not be able to get back up. The fact that he could not only continue to try and escape but was able to fight back, inflict damage himself on the other one, it's impressive. He's in such good shape, he'll pull through this so much faster than others." She didn't dare say easier.
Sebastian forgave her for her slip of the tongue. He went back to looking at Kurt.
"Leave the poor girl alone, she's just doing her job." Kurt murmured in French and Sebastian smiled as he pressed another kiss to the uninjured temple. He murmured something back in Kurt's ear in French. In English, Kurt said for her benefit. "Leave her alone, she's doing a good job."
The nurse beamed and went back to her stool and perched there once more. There was a commotion in the hall and the nurse rolled her eyes. "For Pete's Sake, can't we just have a moment of peace?" She got off her chair and went to the door, intending to close it to let both of the occupants have peace and quiet to try and recover in. Flashes of light nearly blinded her for a second as Rachel pressed herself through the doorway with Marie in her arms and her big belly protruding so far out it hit Sebastian before he even knew she was the one in the room. He knew instantly at that touch though and even Rachel wasn't a female he let touch him.
He moved slightly and glanced up at her, ready to glare and bitch her out for getting too close when Marie launched herself at him. "Uncle Sassi!" Rachel let her go rather than try and wrangle her back.
Sebastian caught the young girl but it meant he had to stop touching Kurt. He shifted the girl onto his lap and placed his hand back into those soft strands, stroking again. Kurt was his number one priority. Kurt chuckled and peeked open one eye to look at the two of them. He shared a smile with Sebastian.
"Sassi?" Marie questioned, tugging on Sebastian's ear. "Why is Uncle Kurry in bed?" She had trouble with her 't's and had heard Brittany call Kurt 'Kurtie' too many times so had no idea that it wasn't his full name and thought everyone else was just using a shortened version.
Sassi and Kurry or Kurry and Sassi... They sounded like some kind of Indian meal when she said their names together. Sassi Kurry was definitely something they wanted to try and Lasi was definitely something they ordered when they went out.
Rachel tried to teach Marie that Sebastian's name was not Sassi but Kurt always gave her a treat whenever she called him that. He was reinforcing her use of the name. He wanted it to last as long as possible even though Rachel wanted her daughter to speak properly. "It will come, Rach, let her be young for now. Let her call him that, she can call others Sebastian in the future and still call him Uncle Sassi for life." Kurt had said one night at dinner when she was still living there.
"But, it's so..."
Sebastian had leaned forward and kissed Rachel's cheek as he passed by, surprising all of them, which was partly his intention. "If Kurt likes it, I like it." Sebastian winked at his fiance from across the table and then continued his path into the kitchen to bring out dessert. He came back to the table and linked fingers with Kurt. Finn had gone to put Marie down but he'd be back shortly. "I have uncles and aunts that I use names I have always used with them except in formal situations."
"Aunt Izzy." Kurt smiled warmly at Sebastian as he brought up the woman both were close to.
Sebastian was pulled out of his recollection as he remembered he hadn't called Isabelle about Kurt's hospitalization. She would be furious to learn that her protege was in the hospital and she learned about it from a different source. "Hold onto Uncle Kurry for me, ok?" He asked the little girl and helped her onto the bed so she could snuggle against him without hurting him.
"'Stien?" Kurt asked, his eyes darting to Sebastian as he stood up and Sebastian tried to calm him with a look.
"I'm not going far. I just need to call Iz."
"Oh. Ok." Kurt nodded in understanding and squeezed the little girl to his side. She gurgled happily, she loved her uncles Kurt and Sebastian the mostest, as she happily told them again and again.
"I heard Uncle Blay was here too." She looked around. "Where is he?"
"In another room. They wouldn't let us share." Kurt explained and looked over Marie's head toward Rachel. He thought she would share his look and offer sympathy and understanding over what had gone down. Then help him explain to Marie in a way that she'd understand and not ask further questions with. Except Rachel's face was blank when he looked to her and realized she hadn't heard what had happened, if anything, she got a very, very limited story. Instead, her face started to get an annoyed look as she thought she had a mission to champion, bringing them all into one room. He tried to say something to her, tell her no, don't, but Marie put her face into his, pulling his limited and fleeting attention.
Rachel had tried texting Sebastian, Blaine and Kurt for more answers. Finn had gotten a call from Burt and said the three were in the hospital and the police had been asking if either Sebastian or Blaine would hurt his boy. Finn had barked a surprised shout at that explanation. Nobody had dared to touch Kurt meanly since he'd transferred to Dalton. Some may had gone too far with their flirting, but no one had laid a bruising hand on him. They wouldn't even dare with Finn around and he was aware of what Kurt looked like when he was hiding a secret now.
Scanning Kurt's face, Rachel wondered if Blaine and Sebastian had gotten into a physical altercation about something and Kurt had stepped in trying to break it up. It was something he'd do, but why would Sebastian and Blaine get into a fight?
Her husband would be livid to see those same bruises and cuts all over his brother's face. Rachel was very upset about it herself and wanted to draw blood against his attacker. Sebastian had been scratch free, looking nearly immaculate except the stress strokes through his hair messing it up from his usual style and he was missing his jacket and his sleeves were pushed up to his elbows.
Maybe Sebastian had walked in to find someone hurting Blaine and Kurt and took the three together to bring the attacker down? Rachel wanted answers but Kurt did not look like he was ready to answer any questions or explain things. He was barely keeping his eyes open as he ran a hand along Marie's back.
It was with a start that Rachel realized she was a husband short and spun around to go rescue him from the police detaining the press. News had gotten out after all that the prince of the stage had been hospitalized and the why was buzzing around the hospital, it was an unknown of epic proportions. Rachel was tempted to tell them all off but knew better now than to hurt Kurt's reputation, even by accident.
"Hey, dolts, my husband is Kurt's brother!" Rachel had managed to storm passed the police earlier and now it was her turn to pull the oversized teddy-bear with her. She reached out for Finn's hand and he took it gratefully, he'd been trying to explain who he was, badly, to the cops.
They were offended at being called dolts but let Finn through, Rachel had been carrying a child earlier and now she didn't have her and she hadn't been kicked out either. There had to be some truth to what she said then.
She sent Finn to Kurt's room while she went to go find Blaine. She frowned but mostly ignored the security guards around him. She gasped and moved forward when she saw that he was pretty bandaged up too and had a dark bruise on a majority of his face. "How could they just leave you to be here by yourself?" She demanded, taking his face into her hands and kissing it lightly. "Oh Blainey, poor baby boy." She tugged him into her arms and his wrapped around her awkwardly, trying to avoid the large baby bump.
"Hey Rachel." He said softly before he cried into her shoulder. She ate it up and bought every tear. It's what she would regret most about this whole situation.
–
Sebastian was just finishing up with Isabelle. She was disturbed by what she managed to wheedle out of Sebastian and was very concerned for Kurt and promised she'd be there at their penthouse in the morning and would be wherever and whatever and whenever they needed her. She also said that she would take care of calling his parents. "Oh god, I forgot about them." Sebastian breathed. "They love Kurt so much!"
"We all do." She didn't need to say it but they were both thinking it, which was what made it so hard to believe that a good friend had done this to Kurt.
"Trouble is, he thinks he does too but this wasn't love."
She agreed that it wasn't. Far from it. "He needs to have his head examined."
"Don't give the defense lawyers their argument." Although he couldn't help but agree with her, for Blaine to be able to pull this off and his actions afterward... he had to be certifiably insane.
He hadn't gone far from Kurt's hospital room, just a quieter corner to make the call. He'd seen Rachel stalk out and Finn hesitate before going in but Rachel wasn't with him. Sebastian wondered where she got to but he heard another scream and a shout and this time he knew it wasn't the old man on the other side of the room without having to see it for himself.
"Oh god, Kurt." He hung up on Isabelle without knowing it and he ran back to his fiance's side, only to see the nurse shoving Finn back and pushing Marie into his arms as Kurt convulsed on the bed, hard. She was trying to hold him down on her own and he got up to her side. "Can I help?"
She hesitated for only a second before nodding. "Grab his head and make sure he doesn't thrash it into anything but don't hold on too hard, we don't want to add neck injury to the list."
Sebastian did as she suggested and Marie was sobbing and crying loudly like her mother and Sebastian sought out Finn's eyes. "Finn." He begged and Finn nodded, fear and tears in his eyes too but he understood and stepped out and flagged down more help.
Bodies rushed in and pushed Sebastian back as they took over and then they were wheeling Kurt out of the room and Sebastian stood completely numb, staring at the space that Kurt had just been in. His stomach was somewhere down by his feet twisting and tangling as it hung there as fear and bile rose in his throat. What was going on? Kurt had been fine and awake.
There was nothing he could do about Kurt so he strode down the hall, intending to find something he could do, someone he could face and do something about about. He stopped short when he saw Rachel comforting Blaine as he sobbed out his version of events.
He had no idea where Finn and Marie were and at that moment they were the furthest from his thoughts as possible. He was focused instead on the traitors in the room. Where were the security guards? Had Rachel's presence made them think they were no longer needed?
"He's nuts, Rachel! You've seen his jealousy in action before first hand!" Blaine sobbed. "He nearly blinded me that time. This time, he couldn't handle that Kurt and I were hanging out, putting together the music for his wedding. He attacked both of us!"
Rachel, thankfully, didn't buy that completely, she'd never seen Sebastian try to intimidate Kurt physically. She'd seen occasional yelling but they were usually yelling at each other, not one sided. He'd yelled at the two of them, sure, but they'd deserved it. He didn't typically raise his voice otherwise. Not completely sold on the notion, she spoke slowly. "Kurt was holding his hand when we walked in. If he had hurt Kurt, wouldn't Kurt be cowering from him? Or tell me what happened when he left the room? If he were afraid of him?"
"Sebastian is so convincing and slimy. He probably tricked Kurt into believing that he hadn't nearly killed him! Maybe Kurt doesn't remember because of all the head injuries, I don't know. The police had him in custody but he somehow convinced them that he was harmless with some bullshit story and somehow have them convinced that I'm the responsible party. Look at me!" Blaine waved to himself. "I didn't do this to myself."
"That's because you didn't. I'm just realizing just what a consummate liar you are. You'd somehow convinced me otherwise but my original assessment was right." Sebastian growled.
"What are you doing in here? Stay away!" He acted as if he were terrified of Sebastian, and maybe he was, he should be. "He just admitted that I didn't do this damage myself. Rachel! The security guards were here to protect me from him. Where are they? Rachel-"
Sebastian couldn't help himself, he just launched himself at Blaine but instead of attacking him, he just ripped the bandage off his cheek with a satisfactory cry of pain out of Blaine. He gripped the back of Blaine's head, nearly pulling the strands out but his hair was strongly attached to his head, being so thick and full. He dragged it over for Rachel's inspection. "These were made from Kurt's fingers as he struggled to be freed of him. When Blaine tried to rape him, somewhere in the midst of him beating him senseless and toying with him. All the while texting me under the guise of being Kurt to try and get me to go home, leaving Kurt vulnerable to him for even longer." Blaine was Rachel's special pet and he had never understood why those two had bonded so closely. Then again, he didn't understand why Sam was so close to him either, he'd seen through the outright bullying at McKinley when no one else did. Why couldn't he see the more subtle stuff?
Rachel gasped and she brought her hand up, Kurt had delicate hands even though Sebastian had never minded, they were manly enough for him. They were still less manly than Rachel's, no matter what she did to make them look more feminine. She put her fingers in front of the scratches and then grabbed Sebastian's hand and tried to do the same, but no matter how much she squeezed his fingers together, they couldn't form the lines so close to each other. There was a lot of pleasure in noting those scratches would scar and would not fade fully even after years of treatment. He'd probably get plastic surgery to cover it up, but the skin of the face would always bare a reminder of some sort. There were already some stitches but more might still be needed if the patch didn't stop all the bleeding. She even lifted Blaine hand and tried to get them to fit. Nothing. It was undeniably Kurt who had scratched him, Blaine had the second smallest hands of the group except for Quinn, and Tina who were not even in the vicinity or state.
She touched Blaine's face gently, still not quite believing or understanding. Sebastian made sure Blaine's face didn't go anywhere, that she got a clear view of what her pet had done and what her best friend had done in retaliation. Sebastian was so proud of Kurt for giving just as good as he got.
The proof was right there in front of her and the soft touch made him flinch hard. Sebastian was about to yell at Rachel and call her all sorts of names but nobody saw her other hand come out and slap Blaine, hard. "How dare you!" The hand that was touching him softly reared back and a fist formed before she was punching him right where the scratches were. "We trusted you!"
Blaine fought for freedom and Sebastian gave it to him. "Come on, Rachel, he's not worth our time."
"Rachel!" Blaine begged with a sob. "Please! It's not what you think. I didn't try to rape him. It's just Sebastian's story. Listen to my side!"
"You said Sebastian attacked you and Kurt when it's Kurt's mark on your face. I will never believe another word you say." Rachel spat out and put a hand on her belly. "Oh... Sebastian-"
"It's ok Rachel. I know you didn't know. Speaking of things you don't know – Kurt-" He could barely breath after trying to bring it up, he had no idea what was happening and hadn't known why he sought out Blaine rather than wait out an answer- no, he did, he wanted to beat Blaine down but had not been expecting what he'd walked into.
"Kurt?" She asked but she sounded as if she was in pain. "Oh god, Sebastian. Where's Finn?"
"He's somewhere with Marie... why?" Sebastian was distracted but he couldn't miss the face she was making.
"My water broke." They all looked down to see the puddle by her feet. "I'm a week early."
"You just had to go and make it about yourself, didn't you?" Sebastian was actually only teasing, he couldn't find any more anger within himself at the moment. Rachel had just proven her loyalties to Kurt over Blaine, something he was never positive could or would happen, despite her claiming best friend status with Kurt. He'd already gone through all his anger reserves at the moment too with Blaine, fear and worry over Kurt was more paramount and he was exhausted from his emotions. Anger would return every time Blaine was brought to mind but for today, he was just done. He wheeled Rachel out of the room with a hand on her back and brought her over to a nurse. This he could deal with, or so he thought.
He asked for security to be put back on Blaine's door as the nurse got Rachel a wheelchair and looked at Sebastian expectantly. "What?" He was a bit irritable, he supposed.
"Well come on, dad. Mom will like having you in the room with her."
Sebastian's eyes grew. "Oh, no, no, no, no." He backed away with his hands raised and Rachel looked at him with amusement in her eyes.
She took pity on him and tipped her head back. "He's not the dad. The dad is probably lost somewhere in this hospital with child number one on his hip. Sebastian is just..." Rachel looked at him contemplating her words, she was going to say 'friend' but thought better of it. "My brother-in-law."
Words never sounded more foreign to Sebastian at the moment, Rachel was his sister-in-law? Not yet, maybe, but soon and he didn't mind it. "I think by now, I can just consider you my annoying little sister."
"Hey, I'm older than you!" She didn't deny the relationship though.
"You'll always be smaller than me though." He winked and as they walked away with a page overhead asking for Finn Hudson to join them in maternity ward 2, Sebastian sobered. To be related to her through marriage, he'd have to get married.
Where was Kurt? How could he for even a moment not be thinking about that? Yes there was a lot of other things going on but his first thoughts were always about Kurt. Perhaps focusing on the other things gave him the space to breath a little. He would surely give himself a heart attack if he only focused on what was happening with Kurt.
He grabbed the arm of a passing nurse and asked him where he could find more information about Kurt Hummel. The nurse from earlier appeared when the one he asked made a phone call. She looked at him in relief. "There you are!" She grabbed his wrist and pulled him back into that room. He didn't protest her touch for whatever reason. "Kurt's fine, really, he had a seizure and they were worried he had a brain bleed that they missed or some significant swelling with how he was conscious and talking one moment and then seizing. They took him for a CT and did some other testing, that fear is not something we have to worry about at the moment, thankfully. I couldn't find anyone else either."
She knew exactly where Blaine was but he bet she didn't know the name of the others. "Rachel's very pregnant." Sebastian said in a daze, Kurt wasn't undergoing brain surgery?
"Yes, I assumed so." She said sweetly but with a bit of a sass and Sebastian for the first time realized that he could like this girl.
"Her water broke. She's in the maternity ward now." She might be able to fit into a decent bridesmaid dress now. Kurt had asked Finn to be his best man, he didn't ask anyone to be his maid of honor but they would have bridesmaids on both sides to help balance the genders out a little. Sebastian had his own best man lined up, well, two actually. Nick and Jeff had been on his side since day 1 and had taken his explanation on what happened with Kurt fairly easily and had become friends with him too even before Kurt graduated. Santana said she was going to wear a tux and be Kurt's second best (wo)man.
Rachel had a fit, saying that she was Finn's wife and should be able to stand up there with him, especially as Finn and Kurt were brothers and she was his sister-in-law and his best friend. Santana had turned to her and snapped He's your best friend, I'm his! Sebastian hadn't argued with that, Santana had been the best for him out of everyone. Brittany had been a close second.
Blaine had tried to interject that he was the best friend but they both ignored him. A lot of people thought they deserved to be in that position. Kurt had just walked away, he didn't say anything on the matter. He wouldn't confirm with anyone if someone was more of a best friend than another or if they deserved to be his 2nd Best-Man to balance Sebastian's desire to have 2. They were non-traditional anyway so they'd make plans based on what they wanted. If Kurt was pushed too far, he may say to hell with it and have it lopsided with only 1 best man to Sebastian's 2 whereas Kurt had more close friends than Sebastian. Far more. Sebastian didn't have very many women he was close to, so any of the females on his side of the stage was going to be Kurt's friends, maybe, he was rethinking that now. He had a few colleagues that he was closer with than he realized and growing closer to over the time he spent there. Kurt said that he hadn't had very many male friends growing up but now he had a lot of those too.
Secretly Kurt admitted to Sebastian, he'd wanted to ask his dad to be his 1st best man with Finn second but he also wanted his dad to be able to walk him down the aisle as his father and bless their union. Sebastian said why not have him do both? He had asked Isabelle to be with him as he walked down the aisle, not his own parents. They were ok with that, knowing how close he was to his aunt.
Kurt was still thinking about it, he still had time to make final decisions.
Now the whole thing would have to be reworked, if not delayed. If Kurt wanted to, Sebastian would even think seriously about canceling it, but that was the last thing he wanted but he would respect Kurt's wishes on the matter after all of this.
Sebastian really needed to stop slipping into memories! He hadn't lost Kurt, he needed to focus on being there for him and making new ones. "So he's not-"
"Nope. He's fine. They think a synapse fired off wrong or mixed up signals because of the trauma and he does have a concussion but it's not a life-threatening or personality changing one." She reassured and pushed him in.
Sebastian spun to her. "Have you ever thought about being a surrogate?"
Startled, she laughed but Sebastian found that he was actually serious. "No, I haven't, but maybe for the right couple I might change my mind." She found that he was serious too and gently pushed him in. "Go on, he's been asking for you."
Sebastian spun back around, Kurt was awake? "Could have led with that." He found he had room in him to joke again and darted in deeper and sank into that chair that was still by Kurt's bed. "Hey." He greeted and his fingers slid into Kurt's damp hair instantly. He'd been sweating heavily, and it wasn't surprising. "How are you feeling?"
"Like I've been beat up." Kurt answered honestly and only a little crabby. "Where have you been?"
"It's a surprisingly long story. Rachel's water broke."
"Figures." Kurt's comment echoed his own earlier to the girl. He didn't sound annoyed either, just amused because it was so typical of Rachel that he viewed it with fondness after all these years. "Think it will be another girl?"
"I think Finn wants a boy."
"No, he doesn't." Kurt shook his head then moaned and Sebastian held his hand flat against the uninjured area he was stroking, trying to give him a little more comfort with his warm hand there. "He loves having a girl, he's secretly wanted this one to be a girl but he told me one night the truth. He likes playing tea-party with her and dressing in ridiculous outfits and letting her put make up on."
"You did the same with Burt." Sebastian pointed out softly. "He could do the same with a boy too."
"He'd have to be a boy like me." Kurt laughed.
"That would not be the worst thing in the world." Sebastian said reassuringly. "If we have kids, I hope they're all just like you."
"All?" Kurt asked curiously. "Just how many do you want now?"
To go from not wanting to share Kurt with anyone to wanting kids with him, to all be his biologically... well, Sebastian smiled at him bashfully. "At least 2. Only if you want to have any. I will always pick you over anyone else."
"Are you sure? After everything-" Kurt looked unsure and a little scared that Sebastian would suddenly find him too much work. Too much baggage with all that has happened since they've met.
"I've been in love with you since the day I met you." Sebastian used both hands to hold Kurt's now. "I knew I would fight for you if I had to and that has not changed. I will always fight for you, even if we're not together. I love you so much, each day just sinks me in deeper of that love. It's wonderful being inside this love with you, everyone else wants in but you've chosen me and I'm not going anywhere." Sebastian bent and carefully and slowly kissed Kurt's forehead then his cheek where there was a space that wasn't black. Then the corner of his mouth. "I will only let you go when you ask me to, you know that." He sat back though, not asking for more than that at the moment. "I want to spend the rest of my life with you, our lives so far have been eventful but amazing and oh so good. I predict the future will only be a continuation of the good. Even if it's bad, I'll never walk away on my own volition."
"I don't want you to go anywhere." Kurt confirmed, squeezing his hand. "I hate it when you're not around for even a minute." He furrowed his brows. "Speaking of which, where did Rachel go?"
Sebastian looked at the nurse startled, wondering if Kurt did have a brain injury and she moved in closer to help monitor with him. Was Kurt having trouble with his short-term memory? "She's in the maternity ward – remember?"
"No, I know that." Kurt shook his head. "I mean before. You went out to talk to Isabelle and Rachel went to get Finn but Finn came in and I didn't see Rachel return."
"Oh." Sebastian knew exactly where she went but he wouldn't tell Kurt that he'd found them hugging. "Just know that Rachel will never take Blaine's side in things again."
Kurt frowned. "She had no idea that Blaine was the culprit. She looked at me blankly when Marie mentioned him, a little upset that we weren't in the same room together when I explained that they wouldn't put us together. I didn't say that it was because they couldn't trust him in the same room as me. What did you do Sebastian?"
Sebastian shrugged. "Nothing you would disapprove of." And it was true, he hadn't stepped over any big lines.
Kurt narrowed his eyes at Sebastian but Sebastian didn't falter, it was the truth. He sighed and laid back, exhausted, onto the bed.
"Now Rachel on the other hand, oh how I wish I were those hands!" Sebastian laughed at Kurt's pulled face, knowing he jumped to just the right conclusions.
"Rachel was always oddly defensive of me when she thought a moment called for it." Kurt hadn't seen that side of her come out in a long time. Kurt twisted his head around to look at the nurse. "He wants you to be the mother of our children?" Kurt asked carefully and the woman giggled and nodded. "You must have proven something to him that none of my female friends have been able to do. That's a very high praise."
Sebastian grumbled internally, they were all Kurt's friends, which was great and all but he wanted someone neutral, who wouldn't try to move in with them. He wanted their children to be theirs. Not theirs and a whole army of Kurt fanatics. He was now willing to share Kurt with their children, but he still was drawing the line with other adults other than his father and brother, and Carole..., and Izzy. Ok, fine, he had to share Kurt with a lot of people but none of them would try to move in with them without being asked. Santana, Brittany and Rachel were just waiting for the opportunity to make it permanent. They were obsessed with him.
Even Isabelle, even if she could still have kids was crossing a very serious line that Sebastian had tried to draw between Kurt and his former mentor. Those two were closer than even Sebastian was with his favorite aunt.
"I'll keep that in mind if you ever ask me in the future; when it's not so highly charged." She patted Kurt on the arm again. "I'm Tamsin by the way."
Sebastian and Kurt shared a look before they both started laughing. "Well, you just sealed it. That's one of the names that Kurt and I agreed were one of the best female names on the planet and if we were to have a daughter, we would want to name her that." They had a list of names of five names for each gender but she didn't need to know that.
She laughed too. "I never thought about having a child with my name."
Kurt's head turned so it was looking back up at the ceiling again. He'd been given both of his parents' names. He had no problem with continuing that tradition. "Tamsin Elizabeth Hummel-Smythe. It's kind of a mouthful."
"That's because you're using all the names." Sebastian teased. "I was thinking I might take your last name when we get married."
"Sebastian Hummel?" Kurt lifted a brow and looked at him. "Do you know what kind of teasing you'd have gone through if you were born with that name?"
"Not nearly as much as living in Europe with the initials SS." Sebastian countered. "I'm kind of looking forward to dropping that."
Kurt hadn't thought about that and he nodded slowly. "We haven't been to Paris. Isn't this the time of year your parents absolutely love going there?"
Tamsin cleared her throat. "I'm sorry to burst the daydream but you won't be flying anywhere any time soon. Especially somewhere as inaccessible as Europe."
They both turned to look at her, what was she saying? "Inaccessible?" Kurt questioned carefully. "Am I going to be wheelchair bound?"
Tamsin held up her hands. "No, no, it's just with the injuries you'll be coming back for a lot of check ups for a little while to make sure everything is healing the way it should be. Sometimes head injuries have a nasty habit of rearing up months later. You've also got a bruised spinal cord and doing a lot of walking around Europe isn't probably the best option right now."
"Oh... I was thinking maybe for our honeymoon. That's still about 2 months away. Would that be an acceptable time period to aim for?" Kurt asked.
She tipped her head from side to side as she thought about it. "Maybe. The doctor will be the one to clear you for travel. Even around New York you'll be better off with a cab."
"Or a town car." Sebastian said softly, they already had one on call for special occasions. They could afford it daily for the next couple of months. Kurt glanced at him and didn't even try to argue, he just nodded his acquisition. He didn't want to set back his recovery either or rile Sebastian in any way, he was already dealing with a lot. Sebastian was thinking the same thing, if Kurt refused the car, he'd have let it go for now. He didn't want to upset Kurt. He would have found another compromise to keeping Kurt safe and healthy as he recovered.
Thankfully neither needed to argue with that plan. Maybe in the future when Kurt was feeling stifled by not being able to walk the gardens or parks like he was used to, but not that day. There were going to be a lot of things he was used to doing that he would either have to give up or modify for the time being.
Kurt looked over at Tamsin again, admiring her look and how she held herself. He could see why Sebastian had asked her about it. Her dark hair was swept over to the side in a thick braid, her dark eyes were full of warmth and steel. "Can Sebastian join me on the bed?"
"Frankly, I'm surprised he hasn't already climbed in. Seeing how he's been with you." She admitted, all were surprised he asked.
He had when Kurt had woken up after the car accident. This was different though, both times he was super careful due to the injuries. This time Kurt hadn't been hurt in an accident, no someone had deliberately hurt him, had wanted more than that.
"Are you sure you want me to?" Sebastian asked gently. Kurt turned his face back to Sebastian and nodded, they'd switched in and out of French depending on whether or not they wanted Tamsin to understand them.
Sebastian didn't waste any more time and crawled carefully into the bed. He placed a hand on the side of Kurt's face while he propped himself up with the other arm. "This ok?"
"No." Kurt answered and Sebastian pulled his hand back to his side. Kurt let out a frustrated sound and he used an elbow to lift him off the bed slightly. "I want your arm under me." Sebastian gingerly slid his arm into the space Kurt had created. He shimmied so the arm was resting somewhere comfortable against his back and snuggled into Sebastian's side. "Now the other one can go around me."
Sebastian laughed and kissed Kurt's forehead. "You could have just asked me to hold you. It would have been easier."
Kurt tried to shrug but he didn't have the space to do so. "Not as much fun though." He looked at Sebastian for a minute. "Though I might just listen to your advice. Kiss me."
"That's not an ask." Sebastian murmured but his lips found the bridge of Kurt's nose and then his temple.
"That's not a kiss." Kurt frowned at him. "Sébastien, kiss me properly." Sebastian hesitated and then bent his head to slid his lips across Kurt's then waited with baited breath for a reaction. "Still not a proper kiss." Kurt's lips were brushing against his, they were still that close. "What's wrong?" He stilled and his eyes flashed to Sebastian. "Am I... tainted?"
Sebastian reared as far back as his arms around Kurt would let him. "No!" Sebastian's word was wincingly loud but Kurt definitely heard him.
"Then what is it?" Kurt's eyes filled with tears and Sebastian ducked down to kiss both of his eyes, fluttering around each lid with the softest of kisses.
"I'm so sorry." Sebastian apologized. "I didn't mean to worry you about how I feel about this. I was trying to be respectful about how you might be feeling."
"I don't understand." Kurt protested and tried to shake his head away from Sebastian's mouth, but now that he'd started, he couldn't stop kissing every part of Kurt's face. Kurt was sounding moody now too.
"I-you- you've gone through a lot. A sexual assault, regular assault, a lot of injuries, I didn't want to trigger you, didn't want to press myself onto you after that."
"Idiot, I love you, you weren't the one who did any of that. I don't tap you and Blaine with the same wand."
"Still..." Sebastian pressed his lips to the edge of Kurt's jaw. "You may not consciously think that but you could react to something I do and I don't want to hurt you in any way. I just thought it was too soon for you."
"Can I decide that for myself?" Kurt asked gently and Sebastian nodded. "I want you to kiss me on the mouth with a proper kiss."
Sebastian gave in to him, trying to remain conscious of any tells he might give off if this was too much. Yet he didn't give any indicators that it was. Sebastian pulled away, knowing they couldn't go further and Sebastian pulled Kurt into his chest more which was where Kurt was burrowing on his own. "Not too much?" He asked, he had to check regardless.
"Nope, not too much." Kurt confirmed happily.
A doctor came in about a half hour later and checked on Kurt. "So you were wondering if you would be able to go to Europe on your honeymoon in 2 months?" The doctor checked. Kurt nodded and Sebastian hadn't gotten out of the bed, just moved over slightly so he wouldn't get in between Kurt and the exam. Kurt held his hand. The doctor looked over the chart. "Depends, if you're going to go sit on the beach or at a pool, maybe a light bit of walking around. But not getting into the ocean or anything excessive- no, looking at you and what you'd consider excessive – as long as you're not going up a lot of stairs, going to night clubs, going hiking, having rampant sex, then yes. You could probably go to Europe for your honeymoon. You could go anywhere for your honeymoon as long as you abide by that rule of thumb. Though that flight might be too long for you."
"Wait, wait, no sex?" Sebastian asked and Kurt laid his other hand over his eyes, of course Sebastian would latch onto that one, not the no dancing bit. Still there was a smile on his lips, he was curious about it too and it was just so Sebastian.
"No rampant sex. If he's lying on his good side or on his back and you're careful and gentle then it can be ok. But it won't be for a while before you can do even that."
"You're thinking I'm going to be topping?" Sebastian asked with a laugh. Sure, he had quite a few times in their relationship but it was usually Kurt topping.
"Oh... then, no, probably no sex."
"But you just said-" Kurt started to protest.
"Either get used to bottoming for the time being or no sex." Santana's voice cut in as she guided Brittany in, interrupting what should have been a private conversation.
"How'd you get in here?" Tamsin asked, they'd increased security on their floor.
"My wife is pregnant, what do you think?" Santana snarked back, glaring at the pretty nurse. She guided Brittany to a chair. "I'm Kurt's best friend, I was always going to be here." She looked over at the two on the bed. "Elliott and Jerald are here too, but they're hanging out in the waiting room, they didn't want to overcrowd you. Where are the Hudsons?"
"Having a baby." Kurt answered.
Santana snorted. "Typical."
"Yeah." Sebastian and Kurt agreed together. Brittany hadn't said anything, just looked at the two of them.
"Is there a way you can top which doesn't require him to put a lot of weight on your hips and lower back or require you to thrust while still being able to lie down with your back supported?" The doctor asked pointedly, getting back onto track.
Kurt mumbled something that sounded a lot like no.
Sebastian looked a little pleased. "If there is a way, I will figure it out." Challenge accepted.
Santana and Tamsin both laughed at Sebastian and Kurt's faces. They were priceless but then Santana stopped laughing and started glaring at Tamsin. "Who are you?"
"My nurse." The doctor answered. "I've stationed her here to make sure Kurt doesn't lapse into some sort of head trauma and to monitor what he's saying, see if things don't line up accurately or starts slurring. A lot of different signs of head injuries can be caught early enough if you know what you're looking for and are impartial. Getting to know him will help too and watching all of you interact with him, see if you pause because something doesn't seem quite right. She can observe that and make notes. So far he seems ok, though they have been doing a lot of their conversation in French." He laughed. "Still though, she's been able to monitor it."
"You speak French?" Sebastian asked feeling equally betrayed and pleased.
"Yep." She answered in French. "You're too cute though, so please don't stop on my account."
"Sure you don't want to be the baby momma?" Kurt asked leaning over Sebastian to ask.
"Mr. Hummel, that kind of position is exactly the kind of position I need you to avoid until otherwise told." The doctor reached out a hand and wrapped it around Kurt's bicep to pull him back to a position less likely to hurt him. Kurt jerked in surprise and fear flashed through his eyes. The doctor instantly released him. "My apologizes, I know you have been through a lot. Just try to stay on your back as much as possible for the next few days. We'll go over a list of activities you can do to keep up your strength because you'll need that to help support your back. You'll also have to rely on a brace for a little while and we'll talk about ramping things up when it come to it. For now no twisting, bending, sex. I'm not even sure if I like the position that I found you and your fiance in when I came in."
Kurt stuffed that lingering fear back down. This was his doctor. Sebastian didn't miss it though, but he knew better than to mention therapy again. Especially when he was so close to locking this down, he did not want to be kicked out of the house for any length of time.
"Is there a position we can sleep in together?" Kurt asked scathingly and put a hand over his mouth. "Sorry-"
"I understand, Mr. Hummel and I am not offended in the slightest." He looked over Sebastian and Kurt and nodded. "If Mr. Smythe has his arm under your waist with you on your right side, it should be ok, but it really is best if you sleep on your back."
"It will mean sleeping on the wrong side of the bed." Kurt teased.
"Not necessarily." Sebastian teased right back. "It depends if I want to be face to face or snuggle into your back." They'd slept on what was basically a twin for years so they didn't really have sides although they did tend to gravitate to the same side for the most part, especially now that they got a bigger bed.
The doctor went over a few more things but he wanted Kurt to stay the night.
Burt and Carole got there two hours later. He was furious he couldn't get an earlier flight. "Thank you Sebastian for sending us the private jet."
"Oh- I didn't. Of course I should have but I didn't think about it. I wish you'd said something."
"No, we did." His mother's voice was heard as they entered shortly after Burt and Carole. She frowned at Sebastian. "We would have sent it earlier had we known Kurt was in here. We had to hear about it from Isabelle." She shook her head.
"Izzy said that she'd contact you for me." Sebastian admitted sheepishly. "I felt my place was here with Kurt. I didn't even think about contacting anyone other than Burt and Finn." Sebastian gave a small grimace.
Kurt's heart rate monitor was picking up speed and he was trying to control his breath by breathing in slowly and out slowly.
"What's up kiddo?" Burt asked, picking up on that too.
"Nothing, nothing." Kurt shook it off. "I'm so happy to see all of you, thank you all for coming. It means a lot to me that you would drop everything and come visit me in the hospital."
"You don't want us here." Sebastian's mom figured out first. "This is pretty personal and private and we're a lot of people who love you and mean well and you feel guilty for not wanting us here."
"Mom!" Sebastian started to criticize his mother for laying that on Kurt but she kept talking and her words started filtering in. "Oh." She got it.
"You may want us around some day, may need our support, but right now you just want to go home and be with your fiance, in a safe environment. With us here, you have to pretend to be ok and put on a show and host us even though you know we're not going to judge you or expect any of that from you, you'll still feel the need to do so." She walked forward and kissed his cheek. "It's ok honey, we will go. Let us know when you want to see us though, and we'll be on the first plane here."
"Glad you're ok Kurt." Sebastian's dad added. "You had us worried, Isabelle was in a bit of a panic, even if it's a short visit, we're glad we came to see it for ourselves." He held a finger out at Kurt. "Don't you dare feel guilty about any of this, you're allowed to feel what you do and we all showed up without asking what you'd want. That was on us, not you."
"Thank you-" Kurt croaked. "Thank you for coming." They didn't stay long, maybe 10 minutes but it was impressive nonetheless and he was so incredibly touched.
"Of course, you're nearly our son, even if you never get married, we'll view you as ours."
They left and Burt and Carole came forward, having heard and understood what the Smythe's were saying. Burt would never have let them in first but had understood that they weren't sticking around. "You're both ours too." Burt said by way of greeting, also bending to kiss Kurt but this time on the forehead. "You doing ok kiddo?"
There were tears in both of their eyes and Kurt nodded, trying to reassure the father who always saw right through him. "As good as can be expected, I guess, considering everything."
"Honey, where's your brother and his family?" Carole asked, looking around, dropping a warm kiss onto his cheek too. "I expected them to be here, expected, you hear me?"
"They were." Kurt laughed and prodded Sebastian in the ribs. "Finn's worse than you with keeping up on the communication when Rachel's in the hospital. I had to tell them last time too."
"You've never had to experience it." Sebastian defended and then when Kurt and Burt both looked at him with raised brows, identical looks on their faces and Carole looking a bit miffed, he realized what he was missing. "Except you've had to sit by your mother and father's bedside wondering if they'd ever wake up too. Sorry." His mother hadn't but his father had thankfully and had pulled out of his second health scare as well. "You Hummel men... you're only each allowed two scares, ok? And you've each met your quota for a lifetime."
"Fine by me." Burt said sitting in Sebastian's abandoned chair.
Kurt agreed too. "No more." He looked up at Sebastian. "I've already lived through enough of them, so you can't take a turn yourself."
"Got it." Sebastian agreed, never intending to ever put Kurt through it.
Burt and Carole shared a look too. "So... Finn?" Carole eventually asked.
"He's anticipating baby number 2 at any time." Santana piped up, she and Brittany hadn't gone anywhere. Now that they were here, they wouldn't go anywhere again. Santana was a watch dog standing guard, but rather, sitting.
"Oh." Carole looked over to Kurt and Sebastian. "Mind if I..."
"Go right ahead mom, as Irina said, I am appreciative of you all being here but I would rather..."
"No need to say any more." Carole kissed Kurt's cheek one more time, kissed Sebastian's as well and then disappeared upstairs.
Kurt looked expectantly at his dad. "Go on, help invite grandchild number 2 into the world. I know you want to."
"Kurt... I'm going to let you in on a secret that you can never tell anyone, ok?" Burt looked at his son seriously and Kurt gulped and nodded. Everyone else in the room listened carefully too. "I love everyone in this room, everyone in that room. I do, but you're my son and no one and nothing is going to convince me to go anywhere else when you're in the hospital. Even for the smallest of things, and this is not that. I'm staying right here until you're released and even then I'm not hurrying back to Lima."
"What about when he's got a kid of his own?" Santana asked out of curiosity, she'd known about Burt's true inclinations when it came to the pecking order.
"He's my son, what do you think?" Burt asked Santana in exasperation.
"But it may be your granddaughter or grandson." She pointed out.
"If my son needs me, I'll be right there." He looked at her. "Only a monster would make me choose between my son and my grandchild if they were both in the hospital but far apart."
Kurt was floored. "Really?"
Sebastian wondered if he would ever feel that way himself. He supposed if Kurt were to have died and it was between Kurt's child and someone else? Or if it was his own biological child and someone else? He'd never pick his children over Kurt, Kurt would never give him a cause to. Kurt would be in the right. He still couldn't face the possibility of Kurt dying, it was too cruel.
Burt looked at Kurt as if he were crazy. "I love you so much, kid." He wanted to gather Kurt into his arms but settled for holding his hand. "Not only are you my son and are blood and we've spent so many years together but I like you. I like the boy you were, the man you've grown up to be and I will always like you for who you are."
"Oh, dad!" Kurt sobbed and reached out for him, Burt came forward and let Kurt pull him down into a hug. He gave one back best he could without hurting Kurt.
He glanced at Sebastian. "But I have to fight for this spot in your life now." He patted Sebastian on his shoulder. "I'm glad you've got someone so strong in your corner." Sebastian wondered if it was Kurt he was complimenting or himself. Knowing Burt as he did now, probably both.
Sebastian would have to ask Burt one day if he felt the same way about his first wife as Sebastian did about Kurt. He and Carole were deeply in love but despite what Finn thought, it wasn't the same as Kurt and Sebastian.
Finn came down with Marie a few hours later. Santana and Brittany were sleeping in the corner with their heads touching. Brittany hadn't said much, just stroked her belly while she was awake. Santana had held a hand over her stomach too. Even now their hands were linked over Brittany's much smaller bump than Rachel's. Sebastian and Kurt were asleep in the bed, Sebastian was snuggled up to Kurt's back, taking the doctor's words seriously.
Burt wasn't asleep, he was just watching Kurt's face as he slept, watching for any sign of a nightmare.
"Grandpa!" Marie called out and Burt's head snapped around to see those who just came in. Santana jerked to her feet, practically sliding out from her chair onto the floor without waking Brittany and then she was standing up and aimed at the door and anyone who meant to do the occupants harm.
Tamsin had switched shifts with a male nurse who was reading a book with a little light in the corner. "Finn!" Burt hissed and gestured toward Kurt and Brittany.
"Sorry." Finn said sheepishly. "Marie wanted to know how Kurt was doing and Rachel is still in labor. She wouldn't go to sleep until she knew that he was ok. I wanted to know the same myself. Mom came up and said that he was fine but that was pretty scary for both of us." He lifted Marie higher up, it was nearly 11 pm. "See, Uncle Kurt is fine."
"He's sleeping." Marie said with a frown. "How do you know he's ok if he's sleeping?"
"Uncle Sebastian is in the bed with him, see? They wouldn't let him into the bed if he wasn't, right? They didn't let me into Momma's bed because she's still in labor. When she's done, then we'll both be allowed to be in there with her."
"Can I get in bed with them?" She asked then shook her head. "No, last time I made him shake."
"No you didn't." Kurt peaked open an eye of swirling colors to look at Marie. "My own brain did that, not you." He reached out and beckoned them forward. "You can join me."
"Are you sure?" Burt asked and Kurt nodded. "Ok." He helped Marie into the bed so they could keep Kurt comfortable and his back protected. She curled up and he winced when she pressed against a bruise but he fought that reaction down so his face was passive once more. He was an actor after all and it really mattered now. There had been talks of a Tony for his last performance but he felt he'd deserve one for this.
"Where's Uncle Blay?" She had a hard time with hard sounds, not just hard ts.
"This is going to be hard for you to understand, sweetie, but you won't be seeing him anymore."
"Why? Did he move somewhere?"
"Yes." Kurt pressed a kiss to the top of her head.
"Without saying goodbye?" She asked, hurt. Blaine had been kind to her and she had liked his childlike attitude and playful nature. He was basically a big kid himself. Kurt felt his stomach roll, or at least that's how Blaine had appeared. He'd tricked them all to thinking he was harmless even though they knew differently, had seen his more aggressive nature in the past. It had just been so long since then that they'd forgotten or assumed he was over it.
"He wanted to, but it wasn't his choice." Kurt wanted to protect her more than anything else. He didn't want Blaine or himself to be the reason she grew up feeling inadequate about something but he also couldn't say that Blaine died. They may run into each other some time in the future and she'd be very angry then that they didn't tell her the truth or that they lied to her, time would tell. Hopefully she would forget all about him in time.
Burt hated that Kurt was the one to have to explain this to the girl, but she'd seen that Blaine was the closest to Kurt and her own mother. With her mother in labor, it wasn't exactly easy to explain this to Marie. It was so hard for Kurt to have to relive any of this, to have to talk about Blaine in any way than with anger or hatred. Yet, Kurt hadn't expressed that, had avoided talking about Blaine for the most part altogether.
Sebastian nuzzled into the back of Kurt's neck, reassuring him that he was there too. "He had to go." Kurt said and he wasn't lying.
"I'll never see him again?" She asked with tears in her eyes and throat.
"I don't know if I can promise never but will try and insure it best that I can." Santana said, going forward and plucking Marie off the bed. "Time for some tough news girly, Kurt will sugar coat it for you until the ants come marching in. You are growing up in New York, you will be talked to like a female, not like we would approach things if you were Kurt." She tossed at him when he protested Santana's approach. "Blaine is doneso, we're not going to talk about him or see him ever again, got it? We're not going to pout or cry about it. One day we will cheer and be happy that he's not in our lives anymore. If we do see him, we're going to call Auntie Tana and tell her about it, as many details as we can recall and you'll lock yourself in a bathroom until Aunt Tana shows up or the police." She was looking at Kurt as she said all of this.
Kurt wanted to tell her that he had hidden in the bathroom but it hadn't saved him further harm in the end. It had just delayed things, but she was right, Marie needed to know that if Blaine ever showed up near her, not to trust him.
"Really?" Marie asked, unsure.
"Yes, or Daddy or Uncle Sebastian or Mommy. If Auntie Brit-Brit or Uncle Kurt gets there first, you grab their hand and pull them into that bathroom with you and lock the door again."
"Grandpa?" She turned to look at the eldest person in the room for reassurances.
"Yes Marie, treat Blaine like a stranger, and what do we say about strangers?"
"Stranger-danger?" She questioned. "So... Uncle Blay-stranger-danger?" They all nodded as she got that right.
"So how do you approach things with me that's more sugar-coating than you would a female?" Kurt asked dryly when Marie sought out her dad's arms again. He thought they were pretty straight forward with him, sometimes too much so. Santana just grinned, not answering. "Am I really that much more sensitive?" He asked the rest of the room softly.
"We just talk to you softer for the most part. Approach you with rationality rather than just scream it at you." Sebastian tossed at Santana. "You started it though with the way you approach every one else, we've all taken a cue from that and treat you the same way."
"Well, everyone but Rachel." Santana rolled her eyes. "That girl just screeches her opinions at everyone."
"Honestly, with the way she handled the news about Blaine, she's becoming one of my favorite people." Sebastian smirked.
"Dammit, that's my role." Santana snipped.
Sebastian shrugged. "She got here first."
"What did you just tell Marie about him?" Burt pointed out, he wasn't the only one to notice how tense Kurt had gotten. Sebastian just hadn't realized why. They both dropped it.
Sebastian pressed a kiss to the nape of Kurt's neck. "I'll be right back." Sebastian promised as he slid out of the bed and Kurt willed himself not to protest, he probably just needed to go to the bathroom. Kurt could hold it together long enough for Sebastian to do that.
Then a nurse was coming in with a couple of orderlies. "We're going to move rooms." She announced brightly. "You're stable enough to move now." She wheeled Kurt's bed out of the room and they all followed in confusion, except Sebastian who looked smug.
Brittany was still half asleep so she would have looked confused either way. They moved into a room with a TV, lots of comfy chairs and several beds. "This is the private room you requested, Mr. Smythe, does this look appropriate for your needs?"
Sebastian nodded. "It's perfect. The bill goes to me, all of the bills having to do with Kurt Hummel does." He handed over his Black Card and the nurse nodded to go add it to the system. He should have charged it all to Blaine but he didn't want Blaine to have anything further to do with them.
He brought the card back and Sebastian signed for everything and then crawled back into bed with Kurt. "The rest of the beds are yours. Pick one and get comfortable." Sebastian announced, he crawled in so he and Kurt were face to face this time.
"You didn't have to do that." Kurt said but he wasn't protesting so Sebastian didn't need to argue with him about it. "Thank you for making them more comfortable."
"I knew they weren't leaving." Sebastian slid a leg in between Kurt's. "I wanted them to be comfortable."
Burt sent a text to Carole to let her know where they were. She had sent him a laughing emoji back, not expecting any less from Sebastian.
Finn headed back up to the labor and delivery ward shortly after 11:30 and Carole sent Burt a text at 11:47 that Josephine Kurt Hudson was now in their lives as a permanent fixture. Burt showed Kurt the text.
"Kurt Hudson? Honestly?" Sebastian grumbled and pulled himself closer to the boy in his arms, his jealousy was showing again. He did warn Kurt that he would be far worse than ever though, so Kurt knew it was bound to happen.
"It's sweet and more likely Rachel's influence than anything else."
"Closest you'll be to a god-parent since Rachel's Jewish, Finn's non-denominational and you're atheist." Burt shrugged.
"Still, they couldn't have asked?"
"Josephine is for Joseph, Finn's dad. Marie is Marie Carole Hudson."
"I'm still surprised Rachel didn't demand that Finn change his name to Finn Berry." Santana chortled over on the bed she was sharing with Brittany, who was fast asleep again.
"Didn't feel like changing Kurt into a more feminine name or using Burt instead or a feminine version of Burt?" Sebastian asked.
"Well... Kurt is already similar to Burt and Josephine Burt Hudson doesn't have quite the same ring." Kurt answered back with a smile. "My middle name is Elizabeth." He pointed out, not a masculine version of it. "I'm glad something good came out of this terrible day."
Sebastian realized that it had all been just one long, stressful day when Kurt said that. It felt like years to him. "Something positive to think about and wash away the rest." Sebastian agreed and pressed a kiss to Kurt's lips. There were many blessings but they wouldn't have been needed, they already knew how much their family loved Kurt. This was not the way Sebastian had wanted to be rid of Blaine, finally, all those years ago when he wished for Blaine to be cut out from their lives permanently.
He'd have rather have continued on their life path with Blaine in it than have Kurt go through what he did, have them find out who Blaine really was.
Burt took the bed closest to the direction Kurt was allowed to face, which in this room meant that Kurt was facing away from the door. Depending on which direction Burt was in while he slept, he had clear sight lines to the door.
Sebastian fell asleep, got up to use the restroom, came back and spooned Kurt this time, shifting him slightly off the same spot on his side so he would stress out his old injured shoulder. He fell asleep again.
Brittany and Santana were in the bed closest to the door, Santana on the side of the door. There was a bed for Finn and Rachel and their two kids to sleep in when she was ready to move if they had to stay there for that long. There was a bed for Carole if she wanted to sleep on her own or room in Burt's bed.
Staff had already come in and out and the male nurse was replaced by another pretty female nurse, but not Tamsin. A security guard was posted on their door, to ensure Blaine stayed away. Sebastian was kind of surprised the police hadn't come to talk to them yet or gather DNA samples. Still, he couldn't be too careful, he wasn't sure if Blaine still had his guards on him or not or where he was now.
It was surprising to feel Kurt let out a shout of surprise, jerk and then tremble in his arms. Kurt was the first awake but Sebastian was fully awake a second later and was ready to slip out of his position with Kurt and attack whoever meant to do them harm.
Seeing who it was, crouched in front of Kurt with a hand covering his, was not any less threat forming in Sebastian's mind, even if it wasn't Blaine. "Karofsky." He hissed. "What are you doing here?" He held Kurt's form close, trying to offer warmth and comfort but it was pointless while the large jock haunted this room.
"I wanted to check on Kurt." Karofsky admitted, talking to Sebastian when he noted that Kurt was terrified and unlikely to talk. He removed his hand from the smaller boy's. "I saw the blood in the loft, the damage done to the place. I came to the hospital worried about both of them, knowing Kurt was going to be there. I spotted Blaine talking to the officers and heard his wild story that didn't match up with what I saw there, what I saw with him. He turned to me and started to tell me that we were through, that he no longer wanted to be with me. I was already getting that he'd been at the center of that mess and I was concerned about Kurt."
"He didn't send you here to talk or gather intel?" Sebastian asked with a hand now rubbing long strokes along Kurt's arm. His heart beat was erratic and he didn't need the monitor to tell him that.
"No, no. I came to check on Kurt all on my own." Karofsky wanted to squeeze Kurt's hand again but he held back. "I'm so sorry he did that to you. That you've had that done to you. You never deserved violence directed toward you. Nobody does, but you had always been a non-combative, and there's just something very wrong with a violent person taking it out on a non-violent person. Not that you couldn't physically defend yourself if you wanted to, but because you choose more peaceful methods or your words. The words were what got to me, honestly. I couldn't keep up and would get so frustrated that I took it out on you with physical violence. Except it hadn't started out that way, we were just two totally separate entities until I started noticing you in a different physical way and that irked me and I started getting in your space. The words then made it harder, not that it was ever your fault, I started all of it and you were just defending yourself. Even if you were just rude and cruel, no one should ever get violent because of that. Blaine though, Blaine could keep up with the words yet he was still violent."
"David." Kurt said gently. "I don't need this, I don't need you coming in here and explaining things away, defending either of yourselves."
"I'm not defending that bastard. I'm just explaining what I've seen and my statement to the police."
"You've made a statement to the police?" Sebastian asked in shock. He hadn't yet, neither had Kurt.
"Yes, I wanted them to get it all on file, since I had seen it from a different perspective. Remember that day you two confronted me about the kiss and being gay? He'd gotten in my face, remember? I may have pushed him backward but he had laid fingers on me first. He'd pushed me at homecoming too."
Kurt remembered. "But you were threatening us, me."
"Maybe, but he pushed first. You were trying to talk me down both times and he was there, being violent." Karofsky hesitated. "Then at the Schue-bury wedding, I saw him getting drunk and making ruder and more aggressive comments and actions. You were steering clear of him but I was within hearing range. I'm not proud of what happened next, I had been trying to flirt with you because you were there alone and I thought you were single. I always wondered what it would be like between us if you ever gave me a chance. Then I heard Blaine and saw him gearing up to approach you and I stepped in front, grabbed his arm and whirled him around to dance with me. You were gone not long after that and I knew I blew my chance with you. We both got drunk and hooked up and despite everything, it was kind of nice and in some ways I got to have part of you through Blaine."
"You are who you've slept with." Kurt closed his eyes. "Why are you telling me any of this David? You're just putting yourself in a worse position."
"Because it took me until I saw the blood spatter all over the loft to realize it. I was more concerned about you than I was about my boyfriend of 2 years, even though I didn't know if you were still there when it all went down. You were my primary concern." He looked over at the murderous glare on Sebastian's face. "I'm going to go back to Lima, and not attend the wedding. Somehow, you're the one who got away and I need to work on myself some more. I just wanted to let you know that I put in a character description of Blaine to the police, as his boyfriend, and it was not casting good light on Blaine, just hard truths." Karofsky made to kiss Kurt on the forehead and put his hand over Kurt's one more time but Sebastian sat up and pushed Karofsky away.
"Too far, way too far, Karofsky." Sebastian hissed. "You'd be a fool to think I would ever let you touch Kurt again, even before the confession, especially after what your boyfriend did. You had concerns about his behavior and you did nothing, just used him to get closer to Kurt."
"I didn't realize that's what I was doing at the time!" Karofsky protested. "Once I realized what that was, I decided to head home."
"After stopping in to see him one last time and trying to touch him."
"To apologize again."
"To hit on him once more." Sebastian glowered. "Now get out of here before I get out of this bed and show you what I do to people who touch Kurt without his permission."
Karofsky sighed and looked over at Kurt who was still looking at him with a mixture of fear and rejection. It's how he looked after he'd kissed him too. "You know what they say, if you can't do...?"
"Leave." Burt's voice cut through and Karofsky bowed his head toward Mr. Hummel. He still had that overwhelmingly commanding presence that people just listened to.
"Of course, sorry Mr. Hummel, sir." He left with no further fuss. Karofsky was the only person in the planet that Burt had never told to call him by his first name. Not even after Kurt invited him to a summer get together, which included Burt and they'd spent some time talking in private. They'd come back, not laughing or enjoying each other's company but tolerating it a lot more than prior to the conversation.
Maybe they'd get back to that again when they ran into each other in Lima. Maybe if Karofsky didn't see Kurt weekly again, he'd finally get over him. Kurt didn't know who was left in Lima that hadn't either slept with or turned down Karofsky. Sebastian concurred. Maybe he needed to go somewhere totally unrelated to Kurt to finally move on.
Suddenly Kurt sat upright. "Oh no, Elliott and Jerald! We've left them in the waiting room for an entire day!"
Sebastian gently guided Kurt back to the bed while he chuckled. "I spoke with them while you slept last night. I explained that you weren't up for visitors, which is why they didn't just barge in on you. I told them we appreciated them showing up and we'd get in contact with them soon and meet up so Elliott can be reassured that you're really ok." Sebastian massaged Kurt's shoulder. "Lay down, relax, there you go. Any pain?"
"No." His words were a relief to all and the nurse made a note of what just happened.
They weren't just going to kick a brand new mother and father out onto the street at Midnight. So Carole had come back down with Marie and they were sleeping in one of the spare beds, blissfully unaware of what was going on. Rachel came barging in sitting in a wheelchair though with her new baby, and Finn, about an hour later. "Meet Josie!"
"Totally an inappropriate time!" Sebastian snapped, grouchy not just on Kurt's behalf this time. Santana bit out some choice words too.
Finn looked like a proud papa and was oblivious to them. "She's so beautiful, guys!"
He wheeled her around the room so everyone could coo over her and Marie sat up pouting with her arms across her chest. "Nobody does that with me!"
"Everybody does, sweetie, especially when we introduced you to the world for the first time." Brittany dropped a kiss onto the top of her head.
"Really Auntie Bri?" Marie looked up her. "I don't remember."
"You were too young, just like your sister Josie won't remember this." Carole explained when Brittany looked like she was going to say something totally different and just confuse the sweet tyke. She was probably the only one in the room that would fully understand how Brittany's brain worked but Carole didn't want to see any arguments between her grandkids about wanting more attention than the other.
Sebastian noted that sometimes she could say the 't's just not as well when it was at the end of the words, she was getting better.
Rachel made sure they stopped in front of Kurt. "I know it was impulsive but with everything that happened and her being born yesterday of all days, and you being my best friend and Finn's brother, I wanted to name her after you. Especially after everything over all these years. I hope you don't mind, I know I always have to make things about me." She glared at Sebastian who didn't remember making the comment nor did he feel bad for doing so. She did just have her baby on the worst day of their lives.
He could rank bad days now. He dropped his head back onto the pillow and looked up to the ceiling. He didn't want to be able to do that, he didn't even want one bad day, much less a list.
"I'm honored." Kurt answered and took the child and held her within his arms, looking down at her and stroking her cheek with his forefinger. "She's beautiful, thank you for including me."
They stayed in the hospital for another 3 hours before the doctor came back around and discharged him. Tamsin was there with him and waved at the two with a soft smile. She helped with the brace and went over all the fine details. They got a stack of papers that they could read through to check if it would be ok to do or not do. She promised if they read it, it would answer all of their questions so they'd never have to call or ask but if it wasn't covered. Please do call or if anything distressing happened that they worried it had to do with his head or any type of internal injury. Told them the date and time for Kurt's next appointment and the doctor's name and area of the hospital they'd be following up in.
"We'll be here."
"That's the day of your big case." Kurt pointed out and Sebastian looked at it in curiosity, sure enough it was.
"We'll be here." He reassured Tamsin, knowing she had more to do than listen to them bicker about something that was already solidified.
"We could do the day before or after... I guess. I'll have to look."
"No, it's fine." Sebastian argued. "The case can flow over to the next day, or be done early, we never know for sure. I'll be here with Kurt, this is fine."
"But Sebastian!" Kurt argued. "That's the case you've been working on for months. It could be a big break for you too, move you up to a higher status at work-"
"I don't want to be a higher status at work!" Sebastian snapped and Kurt sucked in a breath and took a small step back and Sebastian sighed and waved everyone away. He wanted to have this conversation with Kurt in private. Everyone else filed out except Tamsin, trusting Sebastian even though after Blaine they could be forgiven for hesitating, but no one did. It was a totally different situation. Blaine had a pattern they'd conveniently forgotten about with his acting skills and manipulating the situation.
"Sebastian, since when?" Kurt regained that ground he'd lost and stepped even closer.
Sebastian was at least reassured with that motion and he cupped Kurt's elbows. "Working those kind of hours to make partner status, then senior partner status has never been my intention. I make good money as a junior partner, I don't have to put in all those hours because I'm not a peon and I can still present cases. It's the perfect spot for me. Yes, as Senior Partner I can take even more time off and come and go as I please and maybe some day, or open my own firm, who knows, who cares? I never wanted to be away from you for too long, we've talked about that before. I want to be home every night in bed with you at a reasonable time, well as reasonable as I can when you work until 11 pm on the weekends. Spend whatever hours I can with you on the weekends too for the same reason. Last night I spent longer than I intended working on this 'big case' and it nearly cost me you."
"I got to the loft at 2 pm, 'Stien." Kurt reached up and cupped Sebastian's face. "He could have attacked me the second I walked in. Those are normal working hours for most of the world. It wouldn't have made a difference. He was already drinking before I even showed up. I smelt it on him and I should have just turned around and left but I was being stubborn and he reassured me that it was just one beer."
"You could have turned around to walk away because you didn't want to deal with his drunk ass and he could have grabbed you and dragged you in anyway." Sebastian countered softly. "He's been waiting years for an opportunity to get you alone for an extended period of time. He's dangerous when he's been drinking, we've both seen that over the years."
"He just approached it so... casually. If I had upset him or angered him I might have understood the attacks but we were having fun, singing, marking out the songs, practicing his lines. Then he tried to kiss me and and I said no and then he didn't stop." Kurt rested his forehead against Sebastian's chest and tried to control his breathing.
Sebastian carefully side-stepped the attack to get back to what they were originally talking about. Kurt would have to go over the attack so many times, he didn't want to make him do it another time if he didn't want to. "My point still stands though, I want to spend as much time with you as I can and moving up the ranks would mean that I have less time for you and any kids we have. It's not my life goal to be top of the ladder."
"That's because you were born there." Kurt teased and Sebastian shrugged, it was true, which gave him an unique perspective on things. His dad was a Senior Partner at his own extremely large law firm. It was a struggle some days to make it work and keep everyone happy and yet still be top dog and not lose people to better offers and lose not only their assets but let a competitor in on their secrets. He didn't lose people very often, he knew how to handle his employees.
It may have been nepotism, but he always had a spot at his dad's firm if he wanted it, Smythe and Son and Associates. He'd pointed out to his dad when he's presented the mock up that if you got the letters in the wrong way it was either SAS or ASS rather than SSA. He should just keep it Smythe and Associates, it could imply the son bit, SA. Now though, it could be Smythe, Hummel and Asssociates, SHA or SHP, Smythe, Hummel and Partners or even just SP, Smythe and Partners.
"So trust me when I say I don't need to work all those hours to stay there." Sebastian rested his hands on Kurt's hips now, wanting to drag him in to the warmth there but holding back because it was totally the wrong time. It would have been fine if they were having this conversation any regular day. It was the natural way they would have ended this conversation. "There are more important things, one person in particular."
"You've been working so hard on this case though." Kurt hedged.
"And my work will pay off, the partners know what I do and who I am and what I'm capable of. They also have hired excellent lawyers other than myself, so it's not just dependent on me to win this case. They can handle it, they've got my notes, my work, I'll still get credit."
"You are not staying the entire 2 months in the house with me." Kurt would climb the walls if Sebastian hovered over him for 24/7 for 2 months plus. He loved Sebastian and if it was just them chilling together for that time, doing whatever, it would be a different story. Mothering Sebastian was a totally different story. He never let Kurt do anything when he was hurt or sick. Kurt would just be forced into a chair or his bed and was told to stay put. If he tried to help because he was bored then Sebastian would be on him, kissing him senseless and then pushing him back to where he told him to stay and ordering that again. Sometimes (always), Kurt would then start doing things once more when he regrouped a little just so Sebastian would do it again.
That's when they were allowed to have sex, maybe modified a little, but they could still do it the ways they liked to.
Kurt at least let him do things when he was sick that wouldn't contaminate anything. Or on the rare occasions he came back after working out with his friends with injuries, he could still do what he was capable of and Kurt would just take over the rest. Kurt didn't treat Sebastian like he was fragile and would fall apart any time he was sick or injured. Sebastian liked to pretend he was dying though any time he was sick and so Kurt usually let him stay in bed while he did everything from cleaning to cooking.
The difference was, Sebastian wanted to be coddled and stay in bed when he was sick. Kurt always felt like he should be doing something and couldn't sit still for too long. Sebastian said that's why Kurt got sick more often than him (which wasn't actually all that often for either) and why he was so skinny, he was always moving. Kurt responded that he couldn't have just gotten sick by being around more people, giving him a higher potential to get sick, right? He hardly ever got sick in school in Lima for the same reason. That, and his diet was flawless so when he did get sick, he bounced back a lot quicker than most.
Sebastian only shook his head and moved closer into Kurt's space. "I wasn't planning on it, no, but I know you too well so there's always going to be a guest during the day. We've already agreed to take turns and I'm going to be here for all your appointments."
"It's unnecessary 'Stien, I'm a grown adult who'd gone to the doctor on his own before."
"We're going to be married soon, we're going to go to each other's appointments. Maybe not the routine ones-" He acknowledged ruefully. "But the important ones, anything having to do with a specialist."
"I'm holding you to that." Kurt teased.
"I want you there." Sebastian agreed, pressing kisses against any skin that wasn't puffy or bruised on Kurt's face. "I want you everywhere all the time. I don't think that's ever going to change."
"I don't think it will." Kurt agreed, linking his arms around Sebastian's neck and pressing up against to him, they had both forgotten they had an audience. "Even if you didn't want me all the time, I'll still want you all the time and we'll both go along with it because we love each other so much and are able to convince the other." Kurt winked with a small chuckle.
Tamsin cleared her throat. "This is so incredibly hot, guys, but you can go home now if you want. Remember though, take it easy this week." Translation – no sex.
"You're no fun." Sebastian complained. "Can we still do hand jobs and blow jobs?"
"Uhm... as long as he's not tweaking his back, I don't see why not?"
Kurt blushed and smacked Sebastian on the arm. "You're going to scare her off!"
"Please, you get off on it." Sebastian whispered in his ear and Kurt blushed even more. Sebastian shook his head, how could Kurt still blush when it came to sex? It was still so incredibly hot. "Ready to get out of here?"
"Yep." Kurt wrapped his arm around Sebastian's to use him for support and tried to walk out of hospital but his left leg was still giving him trouble.
"It'll get better." Tamsin tried to reassure him and frowned. "I feared this would be the case though. For now, we'll take you out of here in a wheelchair."
"What?" Kurt squeaked but Sebastian ducked in to kiss him as she pulled it up behind him.
"It's going to be fine, you're standing and we'll work on the walking, slowly." Tamsin reassured. "You'll come in next week and they'll look at everything and we'll start you on physical therapy to get you back to where you were. This week is just about relaxing and healing."
On the way out, the police stopped Kurt and chatted with him for awhile, getting an official statement and a play by play of events. They told him that they'd be in touch.
They got Kurt home and the house was filled with people. They'd all talked to the police too and given their statements and opinions on the matter and Blaine himself. They pulled forward all the times in the past that he'd done anything remotely similar.
Santana nearly took off the detective's head when he asked why they were still friends with Blaine after all that. She said that it was because they thought he'd changed and Kurt was a big believer in giving people an opportunity to change and be supported in that effort. She and Puck and even Finn and Rachel were prime examples of where it had gone well.
Even Karofsky was a decent example even if he still harbored feelings. It also wasn't as simple as just cutting Blaine out of their lives. Had Kurt and Blaine never met in high school, they might have both ended up at NYADA anyway in different years and may not have met there either, maybe they would have. They may just be on Broadway together, one would never know for sure until it all happened but it hadn't gone that way. They'd met and they were on the same path and they had to learn to work together after a failed relationship. They thought it was going fine, it had been for years.
Kurt looked to Sebastian after Santana went over her statement with the group. "You know... if Blaine and I never dated, you and I would never have met. You'd have gone to NYU and I would have gone to NYADA and our paths would have never crossed."
"You forget that I was also in Glee and I would have noticed you at Sectionals. I would have made this happen." Sebastian grinned suddenly. "And if that never happened, I would have met you through Isabelle, she was trying to set us up."
Isabelle blushed slightly. "Well, you did have flowers from whom I thought was your boyfriend at the time. You said the two of you were over. I thought Sebastian would have been a perfect fit, if I didn't know he was already smitten with someone."
"And I do go to plays, even without your influence." Sebastian rubbed Kurt's arm. "I would have seen you on a stage some time and heard your voice and would have made sure that we met. That's discounting the fact that we're both gay and would have been single in New York and could have met in a club. I wouldn't have had to wait for nearly 6 months then."
Kurt sent him a look. "As if I would have gone home with you that night."
"Maybe, maybe not. It's immaterial though because that's not how things worked out." Sebastian laughed. "I got so many more years with you this way, it's fantastic."
"Hold up, 6 months?" Rachel looked shocked. Finn was home with Marie, she was exhausted from all the excitement but Josie was with her to feed as needed.
"Yeah, you wouldn't have thought I had such restraint, would you?" Sebastian laughed and Kurt sent him a look to shut up.
"No, no, you were dating 6 months longer than we thought?" Rachel questioned, a little faint.
"Not dating." Kurt countered looking at Rachel cautiously. "We were friends even though no one else really knew it."
"There's more." Rachel accused. "You've been holding on to a lot of secrets for years, haven't you?"
"Well... the date for the wedding is 10 years after our first kiss?" Kurt rubbed the back of his neck and Sebastian reached up to take that over.
"That- that's well before you broke up with Blaine!" She was tuned to defend Blaine and stopped herself mid rant and shook her head. "Sorry."
"No, you're right. We had tried to cool it after that, but it didn't work. It was getting harder and harder not to just rip the bandaid off but we had Nationals and you had just been told you weren't able to join NYADA after choking..." One of Rachel's worst days was one of their best, Sebastian supposed they were even. "It was incredibly inconvenient to be falling in love with Sebastian at that time, but I couldn't help it." Kurt's blue-green-gray eyes with hints of yellow looked at Sebastian with a soft smile. "I knew that he was someone who would be an inconvenience for the rest of my life and I would take it on gladly."
"You're an ass." Sebastian nudged Kurt with his shoulder.
"I learned from the best." Kurt teased right back. "Best ass." He nodded to his own thoughts and Sebastian couldn't keep the pleased grin off his face.
"That would be yours." Sebastian slid his hand down Kurt's back to squeeze it lightly but his hand encountered the brace on his decent down and his face fell. He couldn't be doing that with Kurt right now.
Kurt covered for him and leaned in to kiss him. "She said we could do the rest." He reminded him and Sebastian grinned even wider than before suddenly, oh yeah.
"Well, goodnight everyone!" He scooped Kurt up into his arms and headed for the stairs.
Kurt laughed and braced himself against Sebastian. He'd instinctively picked him up in the right direction, or he had planned it that way.
The others just stared after them, wondering how they could still be like that after something so dark but Sebastian and Kurt both refused to let it color their lives. They wouldn't forget and they'd have to deal with it again and again, but neither of them were at fault in the situation and they'd just learn from it.
Sebastian laid Kurt gently into the bed and removed all of his clothes slowly, watching carefully for any indicator that Kurt was being tossed into a memory or reminded of Blaine. He didn't see a single indicator.
They'd gotten a jogging suit at the gift shop, something Kurt would normally refuse to wear in public or be seen even by their friends in, but Sebastian had argued that if he agreed to wear it, they could get home sooner. Kurt had held out his arms to be helped into it instantly.
Kurt was wearing a simple white T-shirt under his joggers, the brace was outside of that and Sebastian left the brace on. Kurt reached to unlatch it and Sebastian stilled his hands. "For now, let's leave it on while we do this. She did say your back needed to be supported."
"I don't think they thought we'd be doing this so early."
Sebastian looked deeply into his eyes as he asked. "Do you not want to?"
"I want to." Kurt reassured.
"Let me know if anything hurts." He paused at Kurt's smart-alec look that came across his face. "Any new pain." He clarified and Kurt smirked and nodded.
Sebastian kissed Kurt and slowly, oh so slowly moved down his body. When Kurt's hips tried to buck up, Sebastian held them down and in place so he wouldn't hurt himself more and he finished Kurt off soon after.
He left and came back with a wash cloth to clean Kurt up and then gathered Kurt into his arms, making sure to have him on his right side and they were facing each other. "Don't you want me to-" Kurt's hand slipped between them and Sebastian shook his head. "Why not?"
"I just wanted to touch and hold you. Give you pleasure." Sebastian rubbed his nose against Kurt's hair. "I'm good, we can work on my discomfort at another time. This was all about you."
"That's not true, it's about us." Kurt pulled back while his hand sunk lower. "We've always been equals in all things." But Blaine had tried to take for himself, only give himself pleasure so many times with Kurt, ignoring what Kurt wanted. Sebastian had never done that and what Kurt wanted right now was to give Sebastian pleasure too in a way only he could do.
"Ok." Sebastian tried to angle them where Kurt would have the best access without too much effort or twisting. Kurt couldn't go down on him but he could use his hand. Kurt's hands were magic anyway and had Sebastian coming easily.
Sebastian kissed Kurt as he came and then again before he left the bed to clean up his mess and wiped down the bed once more and whatever he got onto Kurt.
They laid in bed and Sebastian asked what had been on his mind. "You want to get married in 2 months like we planned?"
"I do, I want to marry you and I want to marry you when we had decided upon, nothing and nobody is going to get in the way of that. We've waited long enough and our plans aren't going to change just because of this."
Sebastian was reassured that Kurt wouldn't be scared of sex or being close or intimate with him. Blaine had managed to touch but he hadn't been given access to anything else, hadn't taken anything else. He ran his fingers through Kurt's hair and then lowered his hands to release the brace and set it on his bedside table.
"You still want to get married, don't you?" Kurt asked after a few minutes.
"Of course." Sebastian tightened his arms around Kurt. "I'd marry you today if you'd let me. He could have done this after we were married and it wouldn't have changed anything between us." He could have done much worse and it wouldn't have changed how Sebastian felt about Kurt, what he wanted. He was forever thankful that it hadn't been, that Kurt had been able to stall for as long as he had, had been able to fight back. "But I'm also ok to wait for our planned ceremony, I know it's going to be beautiful and memorable. It would no matter what, but I want it to be about us and only about us."
Kurt nodded, this was too new for everyone, too fresh and it would be on everyone's minds. That or Josephine. She was too young for Rachel to take to the wedding, and Rachel would die if she weren't part of the ceremony. "Two months, Sébastien, what's that compared to 10 years?"
