Hi, thank you for all your lovely comments on my previous stories. This is going to be another long one with a pretty big twist. I hope you like it. As usual I don't own Good Witch and these are just my own random musings.
Past, Present & Future
Chapter 1
Cassie turned over in bed and pulled the covers tighter, cocooning herself in warmth. She reached across the bed but it was empty. Cassie wondered what was keeping her husband at the hospital, she hadn't received a text so she assumed he was needed for an emergency. They had been married for over two years and she had gotten used to Sam's odd working hours and often hectic schedule. With Grace and Nick being off at college, Cassie used the extra time on her own to be creative. Ever since her stint as an Art History teacher she had been inspired to create, recently she had been drawing. Her sketchbooks were filled with drawings of Grey House and her family, lately there were a lot of Jake. Cassie still missed her first husband, as it was coming up to Christmas she assumed she must be thinking about their wedding anniversary on Christmas Eve. Even though she and Sam were incredibly happy together, sometimes she can't help herself wondering what life would be like if Jake hadn't been killed.
A sound jogged Cassie from her thoughts, she sat up in bed. "Hey, sorry. I didn't mean to wake you," came Sam's voice in the dark as he began to get ready for bed.
"That's ok. I woke up when I realised you weren't next to me."
"Sorry, there was a car accident and I was needed in surgery."
"Oh, no. I hope everyone will be alright," Cassie asked concerned.
"They will be," Sam answered as he slid into bed next to his wife. He still couldn't get over the fact that Cassie Nightingale was his wife. Everyday he looked forward to coming home to her, he can't remember it ever being like that with his ex-wife. Cassie went to pull Sam in for a kiss, "Ooh, you're freezing," she exclaimed.
"Maybe you should warm me up," Sam whispered against her lips. She kissed him deeply, Sam loved how passionate his wife was. Even though they had been married a while now they still made love several times a week. The thrill of being together hadn't worn off and he hoped it never would.
"You know, you'll warm up quicker with skin to skin contact."
"Is that right," Sam laughed, "I think you just like getting me naked Mrs Radford."
"Oh I do, Doctor," She purred. Within minutes they were naked and making love.
"Good morning beautiful," Sam breathed against Cassie's ear when he felt her to begin to stir. "Hey, you," Cassie answered whilst stifling a yawn. "How did you sleep?"
"Well I had the most exquisite woman wear me out last night and I got to hold her all night long, you can't get any better than that."
Cassie couldn't help but smile, "Mmm really?"
"Yeah, and I was hoping..." Sam trailed his hand up Cassie's bare thigh.
"Really? You are insatiable."
"Mmm, " Sam mumbled his answer as he kissed her neck and let his hands roam.
They had gotten into a routine where Sam would help Cassie get the guests breakfast ready each day. Something that has sounded like a lot of hassle to Sam at first came to be something he enjoyed doing with his wife. They would talk about what they had on that day and who they were hoping to see.. If Sam was working at his practice he would often ask Cassie to meet him for lunch. Sam had gotten used to life at Grey House pretty quickly and he found he actually enjoyed meeting the guests.
Cassie being Cassie had known Sam would embrace the 'chaos' as he called it. Sam made Cassie really happy, after Jake died she never thought she'd be truly happy again. Life was good, albeit a little quieter without Nick and Grace around. Cassie was really looking forward to them coming home for the Christmas break, She wanted to hear all about how they were doing at college.
"So, any plans for today?" Sam asked Cassie as she took some muffins out of the oven.
"Well, I need to finish decorating the store for the holidays and I was planning on having lunch with Abigail. We've not had a good catch up on a while."
"Sounds much more fun than my day. I've got a couple of surgeries scheduled for this morning then a lunch meeting with the board of the hospital and then I've got a few patients to see at my practice."
"A busy day then."
"Yeah, but you know me, I like being busy. At least I get to be home to have dinner with my gorgeous wife tonight."
"I'm sure she will love that," Cassie teased.
"Would she?" Sam answered playfully giving Cassie a kiss. "Maybe I should take her out to dinner, do you think she'd like that?"
"Mmm, she would," Cassie breathed before returning Sam's kiss. When they pulled away, Sam said, "We had better finish getting breakfast out before I take advantage of you on the kitchen table. "
Cassie laughed, then replied a little sarcastically, "Good luck with that."
Cassie spent the morning putting up fairy lights and decorations in the Bell, Book & Candle. She loved Christmas, although not quite as much as Halloween. Christmas had never really meant that much to her until she married Jake on Christmas Eve, that was her first truly magical one. She remembered waking up on Christmas morning to the best present she could have possibly imagined, a family. Ever since, Christmas has held a special pace in her heart. She smiled to herself as she began twisting tinsel around her window displays. Before she knew it it was lunch time and almost time to meet Abigail. Cassie grabbed her coat and bag before saying goodbye to Kate, who was helping her out in the store at the moment. As she walked towards the Bistro, Cassie felt an odd feeling come over her. She couldn't quite explain it, it was unlike anything she had experienced before. She stopped and looked around her with her brows furrowed in confusion. "Cassie, dear. Are you alright?" Came Martha's concerned voice.
"I'm not sure, I just had a strange feeling that I can't quite place."
"Oh, well I hope it's not another storm. I can do without that when I've still got Christmas shopping to do." Martha patted Cassie's arm, "You'll figure it out, you always do." Cassie smiled at Martha as she walked away, then as quickly as it had overcome her, the feeling dissipated.
Abigail was already sat at the counter in the Bistro, "Hey Cuz," She greeted without turning around. Stephanie laughed to herself from the coffee machine, Cassie and Abigail were two of her best friends but she would never fully understand them. "Hi ladies, what can I get you?" she asked in her usual cheery tone. "Hi Stephanie, I'll have my usual, chicken noodle soup and a mint tea please," Cassie answered.
"Sounds good, I'll have the same," Abgail answered sweetly. When Stephanie walked away to get their drinks Abigail asked, "You ok? You sound a little..off."
Cassie took a deep breath and exhaled, "Yeah, I think so. On the way here I was overcome by this feeling that I can't quite place. I'm not sure what to make of it."
Abigail looked at her concerned, "That does sound strange. I'm sure whatever it is will become clearer soon."
Cassie sighed, "You're probably right."
"Of course I am," Abigail smirked.
Stephanie brought over their drinks and their soup, "So Abigail, how are the wedding plans coming on?" she asked excitedly. "Don't ask, everything Donovan and I decide on Dotty just dismisses."
"I'm sure she's just trying to be helpful," Cassie tried to soothe.
Abigail laughed, "This is Dotty Davenport we are talking about. Our wedding apparently has to be the event of the season, whatever that means. Our guest list is at 200 people and growing! I don't want to get married in front of hundreds of people I don't even know."
"It sounds to me like Donovan needs to have a chat with Mommy dearest," Stephanie interjected.
"What is it you want Abigail?" Cassie asked.
"I just want something small and intimate with just our closest friends and family. Kinda like you and Sam, that was a beautiful wedding."
Cassie smiled remembering her wedding day. "What was your first wedding like?" Abigail asked curiously. Cassie smiled sadly, "Well, it was beautiful too. But we had so many things go wrong on the day we thought it would never happen. I'll show you the photos if you like?"
"I'd love to see them too," Stephanie gushed. "I certainly won't be having anymore of my own any time soon."
"Still not heard from Adam?" Abigail asked.
"No I haven't, but I didn't really expect to. He is in the middle of nowhere. He told me not to wait for him and to get on with my life so that's what I'm trying to do. I really do have the worst luck with men."
Cassie smiled at her friend, "Well, I have a feeling that is about to change."
"Really? Coz, I'm not getting any younger and I'd really like to have kids someday," Stephanie replied wistfully.
"Kids?" Abigail nearly spat out her tea.
"Yeah, don't you?"
"Err, no. I'm not ruining this for anything," Abigail said gesturing to herself. Cassie and Stephanie both laughed.
"Being a mother isn't for everyone, but it is the most fulfilling job there is."
"Did you and Sam talk about having anymore kids?" Abigail asked.
"I think that ship sailed for me a while ago. We are really enjoying having time together, just the two of us. Sam's taking me out for dinner tonight, before Nick and Grace come home for the holidays."
"Aww, I've missed those two around here," Stephanie exclaimed, "It will be nice to have them back."
"Yes it will," Cassie smiled happily. "Anyway, I've got to get back to the store. I'll see you soon."
As Cassie made her way back towards the Bell, Book & Candle, the same odd feeling she had before began to creep back and settle inside her. It made her feel confused and uneasy. She took a deep breath and hurried forward towards her store.
The rest of the day seemed to pass quickly, Cassie kept herself busy with putting our the rest of the decorations whilst Kate served the customers. She found having something to concentrate on lessened the uneasiness she felt. It's probably nothing she told herself, she'd had feelings before that hadn't meant anything. Maybe she wasn't as prepared for the holidays as she had thought? That could explain it, couldn't it?
