Mal tugged at the chains, grunting as he rattled them but the metal was so thick they barely even scratched. After trying for a while, he gave up with a sigh and dropped his hands on his lap, resting his head back. He knew after his escape attempt, Kirigan wouldn't take any chances. He knew he was furious with the fact he had managed to escape and get to Alina.
Anger boiled inside Mal. He loathed The Darkling. Detested him and his hold on Alina, keeping her his personal slave to use whenever he felt like it. He was not going to let her be his captive any longer. But with these damn chains on, he wouldn't be getting far.
Being locked in the cell gave Mal a great deal of time to think to himself. Think of a plan to get out of here and free Alina from her captivity before Kirigan could use her for anymore evil. Now he could control The Fold and that he was king of Ravka, no one was safe. He saw it when he killed those Fjerdan's. Kirigan had become hungry with power and he wouldn't stop until he had everything he wanted.
Mal glared over at the guard standing in front of his cell. They had been more vigilant now due to Mal's escape and he was sure Kirigan had ordered them to stand guard more often now. Before there wasn't a guard at all as the cell did all the work it needed to. But Kirigan wasn't going to let it happen again.
At least they couldn't hear his thoughts. Mal had been pondering on how he could escape here with Alina and make sure The Darkling couldn't get to her anymore. There was only one sure way to get away from him and that would be to kill him. But he has been alive for centuries, it's nearly impossible to kill him. The only way would be for Alina to combat his shadows and destroy him. But she'd need to be powerful like him and right now all her power was being used by him. She had nothing.
It was going to be hard but Mal was determined to escape here. He had to admit that he was expecting to be treated worse than he had been. Sure, staying locked in a cell the rest of your life wasn't the greatest but it could have been worse. Only when he acted out did he receive a penalty. When he was found and brought back to the cell he receive a brutal kicking to his stomach and of course the Heartrender had been there to squeeze the life out of him. He hated every single Grisha here… except Alina.
However, Mal did often wish that Alina wasn't Grisha. If she hadn't been the sun summoner, they wouldn't be here, they'd probably be off somewhere in Karemzin, living life freely. He missed Alina. When she had been taken from him at the camp sight, he knew then she'd be gone. He didn't want to believe she was Grisha, didn't want it to be true. He felt as if she had been slipping away from him as she was using her powers and he wished that things were back to normal before all this had happened.
If she wasn't Grisha, Kirigan would have never gone near her.
The sound of loud footsteps walking down the stairs causes Mal to look up and the clink of spurs instantly announces who's coming. Kirigan walks to the cell, standing tall and proud on the other side.
"How's he been?" He addressed the guard but didn't take his eyes of Mal. His dark irises fixed deadly on Mal who glares at him through the bars. If he wasn't chained he would have reached through the bars and grabbed him by his throat so he could give him the beating he deserved. Mal didn't know if he could win against Kirigan though, no matter how good of a fighter he was, he was probably no match for The Darkling.
"Fine, no issues to report" the guard glances a look over his shoulder at Mal and the slight turn of Kirigan's lips hints a smile.
"Leave us" he orders, still watching Mal and the guard nods before making his way out the cell and up the stairs. Silence draws between Kirigan and Mal as it is only the two of them. Mal was surprised he didn't bring his Heartrender who followed him like a lost puppy.
"You come here to gloat" Mal sneers and Kirigan chuckles softly.
"I came to say thank you, without your help, we would't have achieved our mission" he says cooly.
"And what mission is that, kill more innocent people, use Alina like she's a puppet, capture Volcra like poachers" Mal spits.
"Those innocent people have kidnapped and killed our people, Grisha. They deserve everything they get" Kirigan said darkly.
"You just can't help yourself, any chance of power you get you'll take".
"I have watched Grisha be treated like dirt on the floor for too long and I will not stand by and let that happen anymore. I am saving my people, you should be grateful I saved you, I could have easily had you killed".
"So why don't you?" Mal says, glaring at Kirigan. Oh how he wanted to punch him square in the face.
"It's crossed my mind a few times but I've held back" Kirigan murmurs softly and Mal scoffs.
"Why, because you need me, that's it isn't it, you need me to help you, even though I'm not Grisha" he grits the word through his teeth like it's disgusting and Kirigan's face darkens.
"I don't need you at all, in fact after today I'm done with you, but you are useful and I'm partial to that… besides, it means Alina will be mine and do as I say" Kirigan smirks. He knows using Alina with rile Mal up and he can already see his fists clenching.
"Alina despises you, you know that" Mal replies, seething with anger. He resist the urge to get up and let his anger out.
"Alina doesn't realise that she and I are the only ones for each other, there are no others like us, we are made for each other" Kirigan steps closer to the bars and leans forward, a deadly smirk on his lips.
"And you… you are just the boy who will never be enough for her and you will spend the rest of your days wishing you had what I have" he whispers and Mal stands up, stomping his way to the bars only to be pulled back by the chains. The chains strain against the tight pull but don't even crack. He roars with anger and Kirigan doesn't even flinch as he watches behind the safety of the cell.
"Your going to wish you had never met me Darkling, because the second I get my hands on you, I'll end you" Mal says quietly, his voice loaded with anger and rage. Kirigan smiles and shakes his head.
"I'll believe that when I see it, you are just a lowly tracker who can throw a few punches, you've yet to see what I can do".
"You think any of that will make Alina like you, she will never love you, she will spend her life trying to get away from you and I'll be there to help her" Mal scoffs.
"Alina is stubborn and right now she doesn't understand but it's alright because soon we will be bonded for life and then she will realise that I am the only one for her, she will never want anyone else but me" Mal stays silent as he listen to Kirigan.
"That's why I had you capture the Volcra, not only with it's power will I be able to summon a shadow army but it will bond Alina and I for the rest of our lives. If she dies, I die and vice versa" Kirigan smiles evilly and Mal holds back, deep breaths escaping his nose and chest puffing out.
"Your crazy, you know that" Mal says, his voice just higher than a whisper.
"Shame isn't it, that while Alina and I spend our time together you'll be sat behind these bars".
"You know now that I think of it, killing you would be too easy, I said it before that time will kill you for me… no I have something better planned for you" Kirigan steps up to the bars again and Mal's fist clench once more.
"The only other thing greater than killing you would be to have you watch while Alina accepts me as her soulmate, knowing that you cannot have her and that she is all mine and I am hers. In time, she'll forget all about you, she won't even notice when you're gone".
Mal yanks forward, the chains pulling his arms back as he shouts furiously.
"I'll kill you, you better watch out because I will end you!" The chains tug on Mal's wrists and start to cut into his flesh. He bites through the pain and Kirigan steps back smirking. He wanted this, Mal to blow up and give him the reaction he was waiting for.
"I hope you said enough to Alina because rest assured, that will be the last time you see each other" Kirigan turns to walk away, reaching the stairs.
"Did she tell you we kissed?" He shouts and Kirigan freezes, his foot mid air as he goes to step up the stairs.
"What" he grits and turns back to face Mal. Mal smirks, releasing his tug on the chains and they clink as he moves back.
"That's right, we kissed, Alina and I, in your bedroom" rage starts to boil inside Kirigan but he holds it down as he walks back to the cells.
"It was when I escaped, I had managed to sneak in your bedroom and when you left I came out. She kissed me straight away unlike you, she could barely look at you" Mal could see the anger building inside Kirigan who took a deep breath to calm himself down.
"How's that for soulmates" Mal spat the insult and Kirigan stepped forward, holding his hands up ready to summon The Cut but he took a second to calm himself down and the shadow vanished. He let out a sigh through his nose and then stared forward at Mal.
"I'd be careful if I were you, I have many other ways to make you suffer now that I have the Volcra… and it's all thanks to you".
"Orphan scum" Kirigan seethe and turns on his heel abruptly, storming out the cells. The door slams shut and Mal drops to the floor, hitting his head in anger on the wall and sighing.
