"What exactly happened?" Kirigan demanded as he sat in his throne, hands clenching the arms of the throne as he stared intently at the Oprichniki opposite him. He was furious. Alina sat nervously by his side, her eyes flickering to his hands that had veins popping out the top as he gripped the edges of his seat.
"We're not sure Sir but someone threw an explosive in the court yard" one of them said and Alina looked over with wide eyes. An explosive? Was it an assassin. Kirigan let out a frustrated breath.
"And you didn't see who is was?" He gritted between his teeth and the Oprichniki shrunk back, the death glare of The Darkling terrifying them.
"Unfortunately not Sir" Kirigan was quick to answer them.
"Your job is to guard the palace and you can't even look out for someone trying to blow the place up" he said angrily. Dark shadows started to invade the walls and Alina glanced around. A low rumble echoed in the throne room and the guards started to shake.
"We won't let it happen again Sir" they said, hoping to calm down Kirigan. With a deep breath, the shadows started to fade and light was restored.
"Find out where it came from and then bring that person to me, I don't want this to happen again. It could have been an assassin from one of the nations" he said and the guards nodded nervously.
"Yes Sir" and with that they scurried off, escaping the glare from Kirigan to achieve their task of bringing the mysterious bomber to him. Alina wondered who it might have been. A Shu Han… a Fjerdan. Or perhaps someone in the little palace… a Grisha maybe.
David
He said he needed to create a distraction in order to get to Mal and he was a fabricator. He was the only Grisha who would be able to make an explosive. Fear bubbled inside Alina. If Kirigan found out it was him, he might catch on to his plan to help Alina. She couldn't let them find out it was him.
"Ivan" he called and his Heartrender came to his side.
"Look out for anyone acting suspicious, report to me immediately if you do. Have the palace guarded, I don't want anyone coming in or out until I say" he ordered.
"Yes Sir" he nodded and turned on his heel, leaving the two alone. Kirigan closed his eyes and took a deep breath, trying to relax himself.
"Who do you think it was?" Alina asked softly and he opened his eyes at the sound of her voice. He stared forward and after a few seconds spoke quietly.
"I don't know, but when I find out who, they will regret it" he said darkly and Alina swallowed the hard lump in the back of her throat. Surely he wouldn't hurt a Grisha. But this was General Kirigan they were talking about, he was unmerciful, deadly and not one to mess with. Knowing it was David as well almost scared Alina. Kirigan had always treated him poorly compared to other Grisha and if he knew it were him, it would give him a reason to punish him.
"Maybe it was an accident" she said and Kirigan then turned to face her, his eyes narrowed.
"An accident?" He quirked an eyebrow and Alina blinked nervously.
"Maybe they didn't mean to use an explosive" she said.
"Do you know something that I should know?" He asked and Alina shook her head.
"No, I was just suggesting is all" she murmured and looked down. Kirigan stared down at her. For a second he considered asking her more about it, suspicious of her idea that it might of been an accident but then he decided against it. He had more important matters to attend to. His mind jogged back to his original plans of using the Volcra to create his shadow army. The Volcra was ready, having grow twice as big since he captured it and trained it well enough for it to see him as its master. It meant it would make it easier for Kirigan to do what he needed to do. Of course he got side tracked with the explosion out in the court yard.
Kirigan rose from his throne, ready to make his way to the cell with the Volcra but he only gone a few steps before Alina's voice called out.
"Where are you going?" She said, it sounding like a plea. Alina had a sick feeling inside her, terror that he might be leaving to pursue the person who dropped the explosive. Kirigan took a small glance over his shoulder.
"I have business to attend to" he made a move to carry on but Alina stopped him once again.
"Wait!" She called and he stopped fully, turning his body to face hers.
"Don't go" she whispered and Kirigan blinked in shock.
Did she tell me not to go
"What" he murmured and Alina gazed over at him.
"Don't leave" she repeated, a little louder this time and Kirigan's mouth fell open slightly, his eyes fixed on her. He wasn't sure if she was being serious or if this was an act.
"And why not?" He demanded and Alina looked down at her lap, her lip quivering to say the words on her lips.
"Because I don't want you to" she whispered.
It wasn't true… not to Alina. The only reason she didn't want him to go was because she didn't want him to find out it was David. If she managed to convince him to stay with her, she'd have a better chance of being on his good side and a better chance of getting out of here.
Kirigan stepped forward until he was stood in front of Alina, the tip of his boots tapping her knees. Alina felt his hand cup her chin, bringing her head up and she stared into the dark eyes of his. A tingle shot through her body and she felt that pull again. The pull that did make her want him. The bond they shared between the stag sent a buzz inside her chest from the stag's collar and Kirigan felt it in his hand.
"Tell me what you want Alina" he whispered.
His heart gave an excited thud in his chest. Was Alina finally giving in to him, giving in to their bond they shared. Was she now feeling that desire for him, that feeling of alone when he wasn't there. The feeling of nothing as he walked away from her.
"I-" she took a second to think carefully, her eyes looking up at his and slowly she brought her hands up, the chains around her wrists clinking as she cupped his wrists. She saw a hint of pleasure in his eye as she touched him softly.
"I want you" she said and Kirigan softly smiled. He reached for her hand, pulling her up from the floor and his hands cupped her neck, their gaze deepening. His lips hovered over hers, his nose pressing into hers as he breathed softly over her lips. Alina closed her eyes, the pull turning stronger but the voice in her mind kept bringing her back to reality.
Your doing this for Mal and you, you doing this so you can escape
Kirigan then pressed his lips to hers, kissing her softly and he pulled back, a soft breath escaping and their foreheads pressed together.
"You see, I told you this is what it would feel like, the feeling of emptiness when I'm not here" he whispered and Alina reached up to wrap her delicate hands around his wrists.
"We are to be one Alina, you and I together… forever" he said and Alina looked into his dark lustful eyes.
"Your right… I feel it, the pull, the feeling of loneliness when you aren't there" she said quietly. Kirigan's hands gripped her face a little tighter, her cheeks scrunching as she looked into his eyes.
"That is because we are soulmates, there is no one like us and never will be, we are made for each other" he nodded and Alina nodded her head, biting her bottom lip. And then she did something that surprised him… she kissed him.
Alina leant forward, taking his lips in hungry kiss and a short breath escaped her nose as she dug deeper. Kirigan wrapped a hand around her head, his fingers tangling in her hair and their kiss became heated. The pull was becoming greater and Alina felt an urge for me. It was like a high on drugs. The more she felt it the more she wanted it.
Stop Alina before it's too late
She had to stop now while she had the capacity to. Anymore and she'd be fully under the bond. Alina pulled back to catch her breath and so did Kirigan. He stared deeply into her, a smile rising on his lips. As much as he wanted to stay here with his sun summoner, stay here and take her, he had the matter of the Volcra and the longer he'd put it off, the more Alina wouldn't be completely his. He ran his thumb across her lip and gave her another short kiss.
"I have some business to attend to, I'll be back" he didn't want to leave her but the Volcra was important in order to bond him to Alina forever. He dropped Alina and turned on his heel, walking quickly away and when he was out of sight, Alina dropped to her knees, taking a deep breath.
That was a close one, I need to be careful when doing that
She was glad it had convinced him she was starting to accept their bond. Now all she needed was an opportunity to escape.
