Shego opened her eyes to Kim Possible's pale face looking down at her.
Which was neither the best nor the worst awakening she had ever had.
"Gah!" she yelled, attempting to bring her legs up and kick the girl off.
She got no further than kneeing her in the stomach before the heroine hit whatever was above her, grunting in pain.
"Oof! Shego!"
"What? Get off me!"
"I can't," Kim hissed.
Shego ignited her hands. "Then I'll make you, Princess."
Kim jerked away from the dangerous green plasma, which cast shapes in the space around them. "Unless you want us both buried in even more rock, that's not a good idea."
"More… rock?"
The last thing she remembered had been fighting Kimmie, an explosion, the lair beginning to explode - again - and then-
Oh.
"We got stuck in the rockfall," she said in resignation.
"Yeah. And I'm still holding part of it off us, so unless you want to be crushed…"
Great.
Shego tipped her head back, attempting to get a better grasp on their situation. To her right was the metal base of whatever it was Doctor D had been working on this time. Behind her and to the left was smooth rock. She couldn't see her feet, but it felt like looser stone.
"We're in the gap between the magnetic impulseinator and the walls," Kim said. Sweat trickled down her brow. "I think that's what saved us. The ridge of the impulseinator must have stopped the big chunks coming down on us."
"We're in the gap between the magnetic impulseinator and the walls," Kim said. Sweat trickled down her brow. "I think that's what saved us. The ridge of the impulseinator must have stopped the big chunks coming down on us."
"Don't I feel lucky?"
"I mean, we're not dead."
"Ah yes, because this stone coffin is so much better. Tell me you have people coming."
Kim winced.
"Princess? Tell me someone's coming."
"I… dropped my Kimmunicator while we were fighting. Ron's got a backup, but it's going to take time."
Shego swore.
"Shego! Language!"
"Oh, come on. You've heard worse."
"Well, yes. But I'd rather not."
Shego rolled her eyes.
"Look, I don't think the walls are an option; they'll be holding up what's left of this place at the moment. Do you think you could cut through whatever's above us so we can climb out that way?"
Shego frowned at the rubble above them. "I… wouldn't like to try," she admitted. "Not without knowing how much is on top of us. I could bring the bigger stuff crashing down."
"Good point."
Shego sighed. "Well, I guess it was only a matter of time before something like this happened."
Kim cracked a smile, trembling above her, and momentarily closed her eyes.
"You alright there, Princess?"
"Stress position. And it's heavy."
Shego shifted, making some attempt to push herself up, but there was no room to manoeuvre, or she'd have offered to switch.
"How long was I out?"
"Not sure. Little bit." Kim adjusted one leg, her knee knocking against Shego's thigh. "I wasn't exactly keeping track."
"Guess not."
For the first time in a very, very long time, Shego almost wished Hego was here. Almost. This rubble wouldn't even have been a problem for him.
Kim glanced at the whatchamacallit, her brow furrowing into a deep frown. "Hey… Do you know whether Drakken was following schematics?"
"No idea. Why?"
"Because my brothers built one of these last week." She winced. "I'm… honestly not sure of the 'evil' applications."
"Hey, don't look at me. I'm just the sidekick."
Kim snorted. "Only because you want to be."
"What's that meant to mean?"
"You're way more powerful than Drakken, and you know it." She looked at the thingie again. "But my point is, the one my brothers built was hollow underneath."
Shego lit up with understanding. "Oh, and you think if Doctor D followed the damn plans for once…"
"Exactly."
Well, anything was better than laying here waiting for the air to run out.
Shego twisted her left arm across her stomach to the metal base of the thing. "For what it's worth, I'm not trying to burn you this time, Kimmie. You're just very close."
"It's fine," Kim rasped as Shego ignited her plasma, cutting her claw through the metal of the thing with an awful screech. Kim closed her eyes as she was peppered with green sparks. She shook and lurched, small pieces of debris raining down around them.
At last the metal came free in a rectangular panel that leant against Kim's side. Shego extinguished the flames.
"Did I burn you?"
"A little."
"Fuck. Sorry, Kimmie."
"It's fine." Kim's expression twisted with pain as she adjusted her position to lift her left arm and slide it behind the chunk of metal.
"Well?"
Kim's expression brightened somewhat. "I was right! It's hollow!" She shifted sideways. "We'll have to move this metal aside first." She moved her left arm back and reached over with her right to grab it. "Can you help me?"
Shego reached up to grab it, moving it to her left as Kim rocked to compensate. The edge sliced her shoulder and she hissed, her elbow momentarily buckling. Stones, debris, and dust poured down from above.
"Oi! Watch it, Kimmie!"
"Sorry," she mumbled, straightening up and finding her balance again.
With the metal piece now aside, they were left with a dark space to her right with a few loose wires in places.
"You go first," Kim said. "Crawl under and then light it up."
Shego frowned. "You'd… trust me to do that?"
"Uh, hello? Holding up the ceiling here."
"Doy."
Rolling onto her side, Shego shuffled under the machine. It felt like a weight lifted from her shoulders knowing that Kim Possible wasn't the only thing stopping her being crushed any longer.
Speaking of.
She glanced back as Kim rolled into place. Stones and chunks of rock rained into the space they had previously occupied.
"You're stronger than you look, Pumpkin."
Kim gulped in air. "Can we just get out of here?"
Shego sighed. It really wasn't time for play. "Sure thing. Let's go."
She illuminated the space around them, crawling in a straight line. Docor D had built it by a window, which meant they should be able to exit the lair that way. Kim crawled along behind her, her breathing slowly regulating.
"Oh hey," she said, annoyance in her voice. "This fucking thing wouldn't even have fucking worked!"
Shego's plasma glowed hotter. "What?"
"These circuits, they're wrong," Kim said, tugging at them. "And these wires are in the wrong place. If anything, this thing would have just gone… pop."
"Are you telling me all this is for nothing?"
Kim winced. "Seems that way, yeah."
Shego scowled. "I. Will. Kill. Him!"
"Not if I get there first."
"I'd like to see you try, Princess."
"Maybe I'll take you up on that."
Shego raised an eyebrow. "And I thought you didn't like swearing?"
Kim turned red. "Just keep moving."
They continued to the other end of the machine, where she simply sliced through the other end of the base.
The mighty window was gone. As was everything else, leaving behind only the rubble that they were trapped in.
"I hope you can climb, Kimmie."
"I can do…" Kim reached her side and stopped, looking at the drop to the angry ocean beneath them. "...anything."
"Best get on with it then."
Shego turned and lowered herself over the drop, feeling for footholds. Beside her, Kim was doing the same. They clung to the cliff edge, miles over the sea, and Shego closed her eyes as the breeze ran through her hair.
Kim set off to the left, which had once led in. Shego paused a moment longer before following.
In places the rock was almost smooth, and several times they linked hands to cross gaps and keep balance, until at last they reached a much shallower slope. Kim dropped unceremoniously onto it and lay on her back, staring at the sky. Shego jumped down beside her, paused for a long moment, and then lay down at her side.
Kim looked at her.
She looked at Kim.
She shrugged. "I don't feel like fighting right now."
Kim turned back to the sky. "No." Her head flopped against the mossy grass. "No, me neither."
"Besides," Shego continued, finding her hand and lacing their fingers together. "We're going to need that energy if we want to kill Doctor D."
Kim collapsed into laughter.
