A/N: I will update this little drabble series randomly. It's all about how kind (or cruel) my muse is feeling. The genre will vary from chapter to chapter, some may have romance, and some might not.

Another little plot bunny dancing around. Might become a longer fic on its own later if it keeps harassing me.

Word Count: 753

Pair: Kagome & Don Wei (if you squint)

Genre: Action/Drama

Rating: T

Disclaimer: Of the few things I own, these fandoms are not on the list.

Warning: Some spoilers

This wasn't what Kagome had expected when she'd originally been approached for the job. Granted, she wasn't sure what had spurred the manager of a racing corporation to approach her in the first place. Surely, she'd thought, they had their own medical ward.

But she was alone in this new era, courtesy of the well, and the pay had been head-turning. She wasn't a materialistic person by nature these days, but it was a simple enough job on the face of it for a sum that could stabilize her in a life where she'd found herself with no one.

At least, no one but the jewel.

Lost and aimless, when she'd found work as a paramedic she had at least found some purpose once more. At least here, she had thought, her time running through the battlefields of the feudal era could be put to good use. She hadn't meant to make it a career, but the experience had left her a notable medic if nothing else, even if she insisted otherwise.

Maybe she shouldn't have been surprised when the limousine had shown up to demand her participation. She'd tried to say no, to refuse the request, but her long-time colleague and closest confidant, a young man named Sho Ippu who was technically supposed to be her supervisor, had thrown his arm around her shoulder and dragged her off to scold her. In few years she'd worked for him since he had mercifully hired her off the street, he'd gotten in the habit of doing that every time she was, as he described, 'self depreciatingly modest'.

Then he'd dragged her back and given her no choice in the form of firing her in front of the lot of them. To their credit, they had seemed as surprised as she was and had at least been kind enough not to talk on the matter during the ride back.

Rick was nice enough, if a bit arrogant, but she hadn't quite known what to make of the man who had come to hire her away. He was intimidating in a different way, despite the smooth flattery he'd utilized to butter her up in his attempts to hire her away for this team of his. She had wondered if that would track now that he knew she had been backed into a corner with no choice in the matter.

The rest of the team was nice enough, though the girl who called herself Molly was a bit quiet and seemed to eye her a bit when she thought Kagome wasn't looking.

She hadn't been expecting to be thrown into the back of an armed truck fleeing an assault by creatures she did not recognize. They weren't demons, despite the darkness of their auras, and the aggressive response from the team's gunner, Jordan, told her this was an enemy she should have known in this age.

She had been expecting even less to wake up on another planet after they'd nearly crashed, but she hadn't been the only one facing a surprise given Don Wei's reaction to Molly's presence with them. It was aggressive, but defensive in a way that she was sure the others didn't see.

It reminded her of Inuyasha.

Despite Molly's clear dejection over the way she'd been received, things had stabilized. Then their first race came. Despite hiring a medic as, unwillingly mind you, well known as her, they'd seemed surprised by the sudden need of that talent.

Admittedly, when she'd watched from the pit, she had frozen too. It had been so long since she'd faced pandemonium like that, the kind that dangled a string that may as likely be death as it was life in front of those desperate to survive. Once the shock wore off, she turned and sprinted for the pathway down, just behind Don. She was just about to overtake him and hop into the emergency vehicle of the alien medical team when their manager stopped her, a wild look in his eyes despite the firm, albeit strict, composure he so often clung to.

"Where do you think you're going, young lady?!"

'Oh…' It wasn't really her he was seeing, but Kagome didn't have the time to deal with his trauma while Rick was being carted off. So she huffed, set him with just as firm a look, and shouldered her bag in the same motion she wrenched her arm from his grip, snapping him out of wherever his mind had gone.

"To do my job, sir."
