Chapter 1: Blake

Blake awoke to an odd sensation. He seemed to be in the sitting position, but it didn't feel as though he was sitting on anything. Instead, all he could see was golden light. The diviner attempted to move, but found that he couldn't. What was going on?

The man allowed mana to flow through his magic circuits in order to attempt to form a card, but before anything could happen, pain shot through his body. It was like no pain he had ever felt before. It was as if a lightning bolt had struck him from all directions. The pain continued for several more moments and then slowly faded away.

"So you've finally awoken," a voice echoed as the golden light faded away to reveal a rather short brown haired woman. Her gaze was intense and lacked any compassion for the bound diviner. "You've been asleep for quite some time."

"Where am I?" Blake asked, still feeling groggy.

Pain exploded across the diviner's face and his eyes went wide. As he turned his head to look back to the woman, the echo of the slap still rang throughout the room.

"Silence," she said with cold eyes. "You have not been granted permission to speak. You're lucky that we didn't eliminate you on sight. And trust me," she got close to his face. "If the Director hadn't wished for you to be brought back alive, we would have."

Director? What was this place? Was he in some sort of lab or facility? Who were these people? Did they plan to experiment on him? He had so many questions.

"Now, as I was saying," the woman sighed. "You were asleep for a while, which has been rather inconvenient for us. But now we can finally ask you about the Grail War."

The Grail War?

That's when it all came back to him. Lancer's death by his hand, Rin's death by his hand, and Ben's death by Einsbern. Then his final battle with Einsbern herself, ending in his unexpected victory.

Numbness washed over the tarot mage, blocking out all the pain his heart wanted to feel.

That's right.

He was alone.

"Now seeing as you killed not only one, but two of our members, you will be questioned," the woman continued. "You may speak when asked a question, but I suggest the truth. If you lie in any form, it will be quite unpleasant for you."

Killed two members? That meant that he could only be in one place.

"I, Lorelei Barthomeloi of the Mage's Association, will be your interrogator today," the woman announced. "We will now begin questioning. State your name."

"Blake Gerard Ryan," Blake responded emptily.

"Is it true, Mr. Ryan, that you participated in the Sixth Holy Grail War?" Barthomeloi asked.

"Yes," he responded.

"And is it true that you have developed the forbidden powers of a tarot mage?"

Blake grit his teeth. "Yes."

"Is it also true that Rin Tohsaka betrayed the Association and aided you in the war?"

Blake's eyes widened at the question. Why was that question relevant? Yes, Rin had worked with him, but that couldn't of been viewed as betraying the Association… He wouldn't tell this woman the truth.

"No-"

Pain erupted through him like it had when he had activated his magic circuits. He let out a cry as it tore through him and then faded.

"So she did betray us then?" Barthomeloi pressed.

"You're wrong," Blake hissed, feeling anger rise in him. "Rin Tohsaka held true to her mission of destroying the Grail. I betrayed and killed her when she opposed me."

The magus in front of him waited, as if expecting pain to erupt through him.

None did.

"Hmm, odd," she muttered. "It seems like you're telling the truth. Very well."

Blake let out an internal sigh. That had been close. He wouldn't let Rin's name be tarnished.

"Is it true that you are responsible for the death of Ireana von Einsbern?" Barthomeloi continued on.

This question brought a slight smile to Blake's face as he recalled Einsbern's dying screams. "Yes, and I'd do it again if I could."

The woman looked at the diviner curiosity. "Oh? And why's that?"

Blake laughed dryly. "If you're looking for an actual traitor, she was it. She was planning to use the Grail for her own benefit. Not destroy it."

"Hmm," the magus paused again. "You're also not lying about this either. Interesting. It seems events didn't play out quite like we had assumed."

Barthomeloi stood for a moment, seeming to process the new information she had been given. Finally she clapped her hands together.

"Very good," she announced. "Your usefulness has come to its end. Your execution shall take place tomorrow."

"Execution?!" Blake questioned. "On what grounds?!"

Barthomeloi's eyes flashed and Blake felt the now familiar pain rip through his body once more.

"Open your disgusting mouth again, and I'll execute you myself," she tisked. "We will execute you on whatever grounds we please. You should have died in the Grail War, so any second more, that you still breath, is because we deem it so."

With that, the woman turned heel and strode out of the room.

———-

Blake gazed down at his feet, deep in thought.

So he was to be executed… He couldn't blame them. He deserved to die. After everything that he had done and everything he had allowed to happen, death was only fitting. Barthomeloi was right. He should have died in the Grail War. He had no business being in that fight, but he had joined it anyways and gotten his friends killed.

"That's right, pet. Just lay down and die like the dog you are," an all too familiar voice sounded.

His eyes flared as he looked up to see red irises staring back at him.

He thrashed against his restraints and agony struck through him.

How was she still alive?

"Ah, so you do still have some fight left in you," Einsbern giggles as she paced in front of him. She then stopped and looked at him again. "So what are you going to do, hm?"

"First, I'm going to break out of here and kill you!" He spat.

"Didn't you already do that? Try something else for a change."

"Once wasn't nearly enough to pay you back for what you did!"

He had to get out. He had to kill her. If she was still alive, then he couldn't die until he avenged his friends.

"Then make me pay," she giggled. "Or don't. It doesn't really matter to me what you do. But if you stay in there and wallow, you'll die. So what will it be? They'll be here any moment."

That's when he heard them. He heard voices steadily approaching the door to his cell. He had to act quickly. He had to think.

"You shouldn't be in here right?" Blake huffed. "Won't they find it suspicious that someone who is supposed to be dead is in the middle of their HQ?"

The second they dropped the sphere around him, he would pounce.

He didn't have his deck on him, but he could feel that he was different now. He felt that he could possibly summon it to him.

Yes. He would attack them the second the barrier dropped. Then he would deal with Einsbern once his captors were indisposed.

"Oh, I wouldn't worry too much about that," she responded.

"Oh? How do you figure?"

The doors to his cell slid open and two men of rather large build entered. At least he presumed that they were men by their size. Their faces were covered by white masks.

They didn't react upon seeing Einsbern in the cell. In fact, it almost seemed like they didn't notice her.

"Talking to yourself?" The man on the left questioned. "Man they really gave us a nutty one, this time."

"Wha-" Blake's eyes went wide as they passed right through Einsbern, the woman dissipating on contact.

"Better act fast, pet."

Blake grit his teeth and began to concentrate on the task at hand.

The two men were at the edge of the sphere now. All he had to do was wait for the moment it dropped. He would worry about reinforcements later.

"We'll be dropping the barrier now, no sudden movements or we'll kill you on the spot," one of the men said.

Like hell. They were walking him to his death anyways.

Blake took a deep breath and prepared himself, careful to not activate his magic circuits till the sphere came down.

Bothe men put their hands on the sphere.

Blake took in a deep breath and visualized his next action.

The sphere began to shrink in around him and split apart, forming two rings that began to float around his wrists.

His eyes flashed as he yanked his hands out of the loos before they closed around completely.

He dodged as two blasts of fire blazed over him. The diviner pulled from deep within, calling to the power that resides beneath the surface.

His deck materialized before him, counted in pure white mana.

He dived two more fire blasts and drew a card.

"Suit series: Two of Swords!"

Two glowing white swords shot from the card and impaled both of the magi before him.

The two men dropped with little more than a groan, but he was running through the door already.

He instantly turned down the opposite direction that he had heard the two men come from and began to bolt down the halway.

He soon came upon another guard but a swift sword to the windpipe brought her down without a sound.

He sprinted onward.

He could now hear a commotion behind him. They must have found the dead guards already.

Five more guards appeared down the hallway he was running and spotted him. They all raised their hands, but he took a right before they could activate their magic circuits.

He had to get out of there

More guards began to flood the hallways, but he ran right past them.

Various kinds of magic shot past him as he raced onwards.

He couldn't get captured again.

Finally, he came upon a door and burst through it to see the most gut dropping scene he had ever laid eyes upon.

He was on a balcony overlooking a large city.

There was nowhere left for him to run.
