Day 125 – Lighthouse Base hallways – 625 hours
(please pray for the victims and families in Surfside, FL)
Jemma and Fitz rushed along the corridors toward the Med Lab. "It's been almost twelve hours," Jemma stated breathlessly. "The brain damage itself will be irreversible."
Just as breathlessly Fitz replied. "She wasn't breathing in that damn chrysalis and came out fine."
They stopped in front of the lift. Fitz slammed a hand on the button as both took a moment to catch their breath. He leaned forward with his hands on his knees then bent back and exhaled deeply.
"It was a few minutes, Fitz and that was under totally different circumstances." Jemma replied between breaths.
"Perhaps," Fitz proposed as the doors to the lift opened. "Perhaps this is a similar process but without the external phenomenon. We have no way of studying what goes on inside those cocoons without injuring the person inside. Perhaps in Liu's dimension this is the same type event,"
The doors shut before Jemma could respond.
Day 125 – Medical lab patient room
"May," Coulson spoke quietly, stepping behind the woman who stood at the foot of the hospital bed.
"No," she replied, already knowing what he was about to say.
"We can't just keep her here, May. It's time to let go." He reasoned, even though just like her he wanted to keep Daisy forever.
"Just like the last time," she replied through her teeth, anger seething as she wrapped her hands around the bed rail and squeezed tightly.
"May…I…" he tried to respond.
"Just like when we left her…put her in the ground and forgot about her?" She spat.
"That wasn't Daisy." Coulson reminded her softly, remembering the nightmare of that rainy night.
May spun on him, poking a finger into his chest. "We didn't know that and we just put her in the ground like burying an old dog. What kind of monsters were we?"
Coulson swallowed hard. He'd had those thoughts, so many times he had had those same thoughts. Hydra had seen to the fact that they would never find the grave of the infant they thought was their child, but the thoughts haunted him. She was right. What kind of monsters were they to leave their child behind and never return? He had no answer and could not look her in the eye but merely stare at the floor and shake his head.
"We promised her." May drove a finger toward the floor. "We promised everything would be fine." Her voice shook with emotion as anger fought to remain in control. She tilted her head and looked at him as he lifted his head, a lone tear dribbling across his cheek. "We promised…" she whispered before falling against him and collapsing in her grief.
Melinda May had never thought she'd be a mother, not after Hunan and definitely not after Bahrain. She'd pushed it aside and fell into her work…her job. The only way to lose that was to be taken out. Yes, she'd spent almost three years up to her ass in paperwork but even she knew that was temporary. And then Coulson dragged her out…with help from Fury…and Skye invaded their, no her world. That kid had been a royal pain and the biggest liability in their ragtag team. But there was something endearing about her as well and despite May's every effort to keep her distance that damn kid just wormed her way right in. She'd proven herself worthy time and time again. When the girl had decided to leave, to remain at Afterlife, May could not admit, even to herself, how much it broke her heart. When the truth was revealed she was sorry she hadn't crushed Jiaying with her own hands. It took weeks for Daisy to recover from that bitch's attempt to steal her soul. And then this…then learning Daisy was the child they thought they'd lost. How could, after everything, how could she even try to be the mother Daisy deserved? How could she make up for all those years…for believing her dead and never…not even once…trying to discover the real truth?
But there was nothing. She'd gone back after Hydra destroyed the village. There was nothing but charred wood and ash, washed into grayish mud by the annual monsoons. Deep tracks of military vehicles ran through the fields crushing trees and turning over boulders. The rains formed turrets that created new streams and changed the landscape making everything unfamiliar. The doctor was gone as was every other person who lived there. The ground was considered cursed, unused and never visited by anyone.
May had carried Ling-a-ling with her on that trip, intending to leave the stuffed animal on the unmarked grave of her infant. Perhaps it was fate that made that impossible and allowed for it to now set on Daisy's bed in their family barracks. The thought brought new tears to May's eyes. This time she would be sure to have the little toy dog lie next to Daisy for eternity. She did not think she could bear to keep it again.
Coulson was saying something, something she didn't really want to hear or understand. He could not comfort her. He was just as broken. For now, she just held on to him, maybe just to keep her standing or maybe because she needed him desperately. She knew he needed her.
The door burst open with Fitz and Simmons rushing in both rambling about something so garbled in their joint speech it was gibberish to anyone listening. They stopped short as Coulson and May turned toward them.
"Get_out," May snarled through her teeth, despite the tears on her cheeks.
"Wait," Fitz held up a hand. "Just listen…listen to what we have to say."
"I've listened enough to both of you. Get out." She growled deeply, stepping toward them with fist's clenched.
"No…no, May you need to hear us," Jemma stepped forward then turned to Coulson. "Please sir…"
Coulson shook his head. "I'm sorry, Jemma. It's done. We'll take it from here."
Fitz had moved to the side of the bed and held Daisy's hand in his own. He pulled a pin from his collar and quickly jabbed the little girl's index finger. He smiled as a small drop of blood appeared.
May spun on him, livid. "What the hell are you doing? Get away from her!" She grabbed his arm and yanked him hard, stopping just short of throwing the young man across the room.
"Look…just look…" he yelled over her, nodding toward Daisy's hand that now lay on top of the sheet. The small drop of blood slid to the pristine cover leaving a dark stain. "She's bleeding…"
"You…" May pulled back her fist ready to pummel the man who had desecrated her small child.
"No, Agent May, stop!" Jemma stepped in front of Fitz, holding up a hand and hoping not to be hit in the crossfire. May's fist froze. "She's bleeding and her temperature has risen. That is impossible in death. Something is happening, May. Please…please let Fitz help."
May's breath came in short gasps as she narrowed her eyes and let what Jemma said sink in past her fury and anguish. Coulson looked to the child then back to Jemma, unable to form a response. No one returns from being dead…but he had…so had May. Granted they both made their way back with the help of doctors and technology, even if it was alien, but they were back.
"What…what…" he stammered.
Fitz pulled the sheet away revealing Daisy's unclothed body beneath. May quickly pulled it back, sneering at the man. He'd only gotten a quick glimpse. He needed more but was sure he'd noted a faint bluish glow beneath the child.
"May," he breathed. "I'm a doctor."
May narrowed her eyes, threateningly. "Not that kind," she reminded him, keeping one hand firmly on the sheet.
"But I am," Jemma voice was fully of authority. "And if you don't let us do this now, it may be too late." She stepped next to May and reached toward the cover.
Coulson laid a hand on May's shoulder. "Melinda," he spoke softly. "We have nothing to lose. They can't make it worse."
The cold glare in May's eyes did not diminish as everyone waited. She looked to Daisy then back to Simmons gave a gruff exhale and stepped aside.
Jemma immediately went into doctor mode, turning the sheet back only a bit. "We have to remove the pulmonary catheter. If you are correct her organs will move as she grows into herself."
Fitz grimaced at the thought and turned away as Jemma began carefully withdrawing the instrument. A small drop of blood spurted out as the catheter came clear. The doctor covered the small incision with a butterfly band aid then ordered a phlebotomy kit. A few seconds later a very confused looking tech hurried into the room with the requested item. Jemma looked at Fitz for a moment before she began the procedure then handed him the sample vial and squeezed his hand as he took it. Fitz gave a quick nod and exited the room.
"I'm going to ask you to step out for a moment, Agent Coulson." Jemma said softly, turning toward him.
Coulson shook his head. "I'm here no matter what." He informed her.
Jemma raised her brows as she picked up a thermometer and shook it. "Perhaps Daisy might object." She reminded him. He gave a short nod, indicating he understood and turned away.
Three minutes later Jemma announced the child's temperature had risen to 89 degrees. She tucked the sheet around Daisy and brushed a hand across the stray hairs on her forehead. Two minutes later Fitz burst back into the room.
"It's happening." He exhaled. "The process is just as it was."
"So what do we do?" Coulson needed to know.
"Nothing," Jemma responded. "We wait. It's all we can do."
"We've only been able to observe this in the lab with small samples. There is no way to determine how long it may take with the entire body involved." Fitz explained.
"If it is determined by body temp it could be a bit more than six hours." Jemma calculated how long it would take for the child's temperature to reach a normal level.
"Then what?" Coulson wrapped May's hand in his own, attempting to hide the tremor in his voice.
Fitz and Simmons exchanged a nervous glance.
"Well…" Jemma hesitated.
"The theory is that it will bring about a change somewhat like the terragenesis crystals did." Fitz finished. "Without the chrysalis business," he added quickly.
"And without the power...superization effect." Jemma added then whispered, "we hope," out of the side of her mouth.
May drew a breath through her teeth and shook her head. "And you expect us to just sit here and hope, HOPE, that this asinine idea of yours has some weight?" She pulled away from Coulson, paced across then room and then back. She pointed a finger in Fitz's face but before she could speak Jemma exhaled a short gasp.
The soft blue glow that had formed a cushion below the child's body now spread out flickering at the edge of the sheet that covered her. Fitz moved forward but Simmons grabbed his arm and reached for her trusty thermometer. She put out a hand to remove the cover then jumped back as the light crackled and bit at her fingers.
Jemma shook her hand then stepped back as the light continued to pour out as if it were liquid. It fell down like a dust ruffle around the bed but did not reach the floor. The four occupants of the room watched, fascinated by the site before them. The light rose from the bed completely encasing Daisy in what resembled a large oval shaped bubble. For a moment it merely shimmered and waved like water then began growing dark, sparking lightly until the soft glimmers grew into loud crackles sending out blue lightening in wide arcs.
Fitz pushed Jemma back. Coulson jumped as a bolt struck the floor at his feet. He moved back watching May as the light surrounded her causing her hair to fan out as if a brisk wind had entered the room. He called to her. She ignored him.
The lightening grew more fierce setting off alarms in the base. Security would arrive soon but not before Mack and Yoyo would join them. The sound in the room grew so loud it was difficult to hear. Coulson reached out and grabbed May a second before a strong bolt disintegrated the chair next to her. While inside the bubble Daisy remained unharmed.
Fitz ducked under a bolt that shot across the room, covering his ears as it exploded with electric energy. "We've got to get out of here. We aren't safe." He shouted as he backed to the door, pulling Simmons with him.
Coulson gave a quick nod and pushed May out of the opened door then followed. They slammed into Mack as FitzSimmons followed a half step behind. Fitz pulled the door closed with a slam and looked to the astonished Mack. Before he could offer any explanation the room filled with electric arcs crackling in all directions. The area over Daisy's bubble grew dark forming a long jagged tear above her. It hovered for a moment before opening like a giant zipper. Blue flames belched from the hole it tore as the lightening increased in force rattling the furniture still left in the room. The tear widened over the small girl until it was impossible to see her. The lightening combined into a single ball of energy pulled itself into the size of a softball then expanded with impossible velocity. The sound of it exploding rocked the base as the observation window splintered into hundreds of small shards and shattered to the ground.
Then complete silence.
Everyone stood in shocked stillness, frozen in place.
"What the hell?" Mack snarled.
"Dios mio," Elena crossed herself.
Fitz and Simmons stood agape.
"Daisy!" Coulson and May spoke together.
They rushed past the others into the room, unconcerned with their own safety.
After a beat the others followed.
The acrid scent of the smoldering room assaulted their senses. Most of the furniture was reduced to cinders. Monitors belched tendrils of grey smoke as they hung from the wall by strained electrical cords. The walls were covered with bright blue splats where the odd lightening had struck. Ceiling blocks dangled from their frames. Jagged chips of broken glass covered the floor. The mattress was singed with dark blue soot.
May raced to its edge, staring in disbelief.
The bed was empty.
xxxx
A thorough search of the room…and all of med lab…found no trace of the child that had been there moments before. May slammed a fist on the empty bed before storming from the room. The others followed one by one, no one believing what they had witnessed first hand.
"Dios mío, Mac. ¿Esa pequeña niña se desintegró en esa extraña explosión azul?" Elena whispered as her footsteps crunched through the glass on the floor.
Mac wrapped an arm around her. He did not want to believe that but it seemed like the only explanation. FitzSimmons had a lot of debriefing to do.
Coulson dismissed the security detail as the they moved in to investigate the anomaly. The team moved from the devastated room to the larger medical lab as Jemma shooed all of her techs out.
"Damn it!" May slammed a fist on the counter. "That mad scientist took her right back." She paced in an effort to contain her ire. "Had this planned all along…send her here like a child with some promise it was temporary…"
"We don't know that." Jemma reasoned. "Why would he do such a thing?"
"All that damn mad scientist was interested in was getting information on here…on how to get here." May spat.
"The tear in…" Coulson began.
"Reality?" Fitz offered.
"Space?" Jemma shrugged.
"Locura," Elena stated flatly as she crossed her arms over her chest.
Coulson nodded. "Yeah, probably all of the above because that tear was exactly the same as the one we all fell through when Liu shot us back." He looked at May nonverbally asking if she remembered then continued. "It ripped open the…well…the air and spit us out like a bad taste. Couple minutes later it did the same with Daisy."
"All a part of that lunatic's plan…never should have trusted that damn…" May ranted.
Coulson turned to her as the others simply observed. "The man was a friend of your father, May. Do you really believe he would do something like this?"
May shook her head. "That was not my father." She growled.
"Not the father you have here, but…" Fitz began to explain then fell silent at the look she cast him.
May stepped close to him, speaking through her teeth. "I don't care how you do it, but you get that damn program running and send me back. This time I'll decide how we get back after I do some sending of my own. I intend to send Liu through a brick wall!"
"May, the program is gone. The connection was a fluke at best and even if I could duplicate it there is no guarantee you'd end up in the same sister universe." Fitz argued.
"Well I don't plan to sit here on my ass while my…while Daisy becomes somebody's guinea pig." She shot back.
Coulson stepped between them, holding up a hand. "No one is going anywhere until we have a plan. We've taken enough risks and…" He stopped and drew a breath. "And we've lost enough. This is over."
"We can't just walk away from this like she never existed. We tried that. Remember?" May growled.
Coulson let out a breath. "Daisy was here and she meant a lot to all of us. She existed and made a difference in all of our lives." He shot back.
The group grew quiet each remembering the moments, good and bad, they had shared with Daisy Johnson. They shared smiles and nods as those memories filled their minds. Jemma drew a breath that escaped in a sob. Fitz wrapped an arm around her. Mack rubbed his hand across his jaw, lowering his head to brush away a stray tear. Elena let out a little chuckle recalling some of the girl's escapades.
Coulson waited for the group to let out a collective breath. "Okay…then we get back to it. Fitz you get busy redesigning that program." He looked to May before she could respond. "We are not looking for revenge. We looking for Daisy and we have work to do."
Fitz rose from his seat next to Jemma. There was no way to duplicate that program. He never truly understood how it had connected to an alternate universe. It was months before any of them even realized that was the case. In addition the people there admitted that time moved differently in that dimension. For all he knew twenty or thirty years might have passed in the few months they'd been at the lighthouse. There was no doubt he could create a computer generated world and send anyone into it, but connect to another universe was next to impossible.
Jemma took his hand, tugging him back. Now was not the time. Emotions were raw. The time would come for logical explanations and reasonable suggestions but it was not today. She let him know with a soft look. He wrapped both his hands around her, gave a nod and sat down.
May let out a disgusted huff and headed for the door to the hallway. Coulson called after her and took a step to follow only to be thrown off balance by a tremor that shook the base. May grabbed the door knob to keep her balance. The others rocked off the chairs they had occupied latching on to anything that would steady them.
"What the hell?" May snarled.
"Now what?" Mack growled.
May lurched forward for a second as a technician pushed the door open and stumbled inside. The young man's eyes were wide. He glanced at May then looked around the small room, stopping at Jemma.
"Dr. Simmons we need you." He sounded frantic.
Jemma looked to Fitz, gave a nod, and moved to follow the man. Fitz followed as did the rest of the team.
Both scientists rushed into the room ahead of the others each recalling the last time tremors had rocked their base. Daisy had been separated from her powers while in that alternate dimension causing catastrophic damage. What the LMD's explosion started, those powers ended with what was left of the Playground dropping into a gaping chasm.
Could it be happening again?
The room Daisy had occupied for almost a week vibrated with the same blue charges that had just taken the little girl. The team watched in disbelief as the tear that had formed over her bed once again crackled through what could only be called 'reality'. If the real world was a bit of celluloid film it could be compared to it catching fire and slowly melting down the center. This tear was much more violent, sparking and spitting what could only be called shades of blue lava that hissed as it touched the solid surfaces of their world disappearing in a cloud of noxious steam.
Mack grabbed the nearest fire extinguisher but found it unnecessary as the fiery substance left no trace, igniting nothing. He held on to it just in case.
The tear grew in length and width as the room shook furiously. What had not been destroyed in the first occurrence popped like overfilled balloons adding explosions to the already increasing volume of the volcanic blue eruption. With a belch and sickening glug dark bluish goo poured from the tear onto the bed shimmering with thousands of star-like sparkles before it morphed into a familiar shape almost transparent in appearance. With a loud bang the tear disappeared and the room went silent.
Again the team froze staring at the bed where the pale blue bubble now crackled and smoldered as if it had been pulled from a forge. Slowly it took shape, at first nothing more than a blob, then easing into a familiar from. Simmons stood closest and recognized it quickly. She turned back, grabbed a thin blanket from a chair just outside the door and rushed to put out any flame that might erupt. There was no doubt that the bluish shape that now lay on the bed was Daisy, full grown adult Daisy. .
Jemma jumped back at the electric shock that met her hands, tossing the blanket over the form that did not appear to be clothed but gave no hint of detail. Daisy's appearance was hazy at best, curled on her side with her hands tucked under her cheek. The sight was odd as if painted there rather than being a three dimensional form. Soft tendrils of blue smoke rose from the figure. For a moment Jemma wondered if it would ignite but even at a distance she could feel no heat radiating from the form.
The room was quiet and still with the exception of the soft crackling sounds coming from the bed. May stepped forward and reached out a hand, quickly grabbed by Simmons. The doctor shook her head in warning, holding up her bright red fingers. The wound gave no pain but May understood. She stood back, questioning with just her eyes.
Was this truly Daisy or just a cruel trick?
Fitz moved quickly, drawing both women back a few feet. "The electrical charges won't last." He assured them. "It's part of the process…" Fitz shook his head, organizing his thoughts as he watched the anomaly he had observed, only through a microscope, occur in real time. "They have to complete their cycle through her entire body in order to reanimate her…" He paused searching for the correct term. "Herrrrr self," he chose, keeping it simple.
In truth, Fitz had no idea how much of Daisy's 'self' had to be reanimated. He'd only observed her blood going through the process. It was highly possible that this would run through every cell in her body. Perhaps that was why she was now completely covered by the blue electrical field. For a moment it appeared solid then became fluid as if coursing waves over the girl and an instant later it was solid again.
"I don't think she's in any pain." He added, holding out a hand to keep the other's back while looking over his shoulder at the action behind him.
"You don't think?" May growled, slapping his hand aside. "Damn it, look at Simmons' hand," she commanded grabbing Jemma's wrist and shoving it toward him.
"How long?" Coulson asked, his face a mask of wonder and concern.
Jemma pulled her hand back, looking from May to Coulson and then back. "She doesn't appear to be in pain." She nodded toward the peaceful form on the bed, now covered by the hastily thrown sheet. The blue haze blurred through the fabric giving it a luminescent appearance.
Daisy hadn't moved since her form dropped, or was poured, onto the mattress. It was still almost impossible to make out the details of her face through the azure mask she wore. Tiny lines of blue lightening ran through the bubble like covering then shot from what appeared to be her body, at staggered intervals. Each gave an almost silent snap as it reached out and then evaporated.
"For now it might be best if we simply observe, as we certainly do not fully understand what is happening and anything we do could disrupt…" Jemma began, trying to remain medically professional.
"This could be killing her!" May spat, taking a step before Coulson grabbed her arm to hold her back. She shook him off but not without a warning glare.
"It could be what was meant to happen all along. We just don't have enough information." Fitz repeated for the nth time. He'd lost count. "This could have been immediate when you were both sent through the void between the universes. Your DNA was compacted into the capsules you told us about. According to your description of the event, Daisy had but a helmet and a sample of Skye's DNA to put her back together. We're lucky it did that." The young scientist's tone was more than angry.
Everything that was happening was just as he had theorized, only in a much larger capacity. Fitz could not predict every step of this process but he was sure it was happening just as he had observed in his experiments over and over again.
"Being inhuman is one thing. Turning into an electrified Smurf is something else." Mack exhaled, staring in astonishment.
Yoyo furrowed her brow, casting him a disapproving look while hoping no one else had heard his comment.
"All we can do is observe," Jemma started again. "If Fitz it correct this should pass and I'll be able to assess her condition. Until then all we can do is safely keep our distance and wait." She nodded toward the security camera that miraculously had survived the carnage.
May followed her gaze then shook her head. "I'm staying right here."
"May…" Coulson began. She silenced him with a glare.
"You won't be much good to her if that damn blue storm starts again." He countered. "None of us will and we will be right outside if…when this passes."
"I'm not leaving her, Phil." May's voice cracked for a second. "I'm keeping that promise."
Coulson understood. He gave a quick nod then motioned for the others to leave. He stepped out behind them, grabbed two chairs then joined May in her vigil.
Day 125 – Inside a very confused Daisy's mind
Okay, I've had some wild dreams in my day and some pretty nasty ones as well. Yep, downing a whole bottle of some cheap whiskey and passing out on some smelly couch can lead to some terrifying illusions, not to mention a lot of praying at the porcelain altar. Getting lost or left alone in a big old haunted house is pretty scary to a little kid, especially when every ghoul wears a habit. But this, this right now is probably the wildest dreamscape I've ever tripped.
I've had those wacky drug induced dreams too. Not that I never smoked a little weed, but I'm talking about the kind of drugs they give you when you're injured or need surgery or dental work. Yep, been there too, more often than I want to recall. I've been knocked around quite a bit in this job and being inhuman doesn't make you impervious to pain.
But this is the craziest thing I've ever been through. I could hear them all yelling and carrying on like the hammers of hell were beating and damn, Jemma what was that you hit me with. Geez, I'm just a little kid and you kick me in the chest like a damn mule. All that poking and prodding and then poof, it's all gone until the light show started.
Fireworks, wow, just like the Fourth of July…but all ya got was blue. Where's the fun in that? Didn't last long though and no big finale. Just lots of noise and then blah…nothing.
So now what?
Where the hell am I?
And…where's my body?
I'm just a mind?
I'm just thinking…
No…no dreaming…I'm dreaming this weird dream.
I don't even know if I'm still a kid or if I grew because I never really thought different…well maybe a couple times things got kinda mixed up. But, I knew who…er, what I was.
I think.
Now, I'm all…
Body-less?
Is that even a word?
Who the hell am I talking to?
No…I'm not talking because I don't have a mouth. I don't even have a head so how can I have a brain or a mind or a thought?
Maybe I'm in my head…mind…brain.
Oh gawd, I shrunk.
I'm so teeny I got sucked into my own head.
No…no…wait…that's impossible cuz my head would shrink with me.
Okay…okay, Daisy get a grip!
This is one of those 'Jemma-stabbed-me-with-one-of-her-damn-butt-darts' dreams.
Just wait til I wake up, Simmons. You think you've seen tantrums? I'll show you just how bad this little hell beast can get revenge.
"You go right ahead and your butt will have to worry about more than darts!"
Damn! Was that May? Is she here too?
Eeeeeee, I'm thinkin' in a May voice.
Stop laughing. It isn't funny.
Oh damn, maybe if I put my foot on the floor the room will stop spinning.
But…I don't got a foot
Cuz I ain't got no body
I got no body…nobody.
I got nobody. I'm alone
NO! No, I'm not I got a family…this family…all of them…yeah, even Davis…the big goof. Does he even like me? Nope, Piper don't. She thinks I'm a spoiled brat…even when I'm big…
I can't put my no-foot on the floor
Cuz there's no floor
And there's no room…just miles and miles of blue nothing
I wish May was here…
I miss her…
Coulson too…
MAY! Can you hear me? COULSON!?
They can't hear me thinking…or dreaming.
When I was a kid…a real kid…I used to dream about my parents. They never had faces, but when I think about it now and even before I knew the real truth they're always May and Coulson. I wonder if they wondered what their daughter would be like.
Bet they never pictured me.
I'M SORRY! I KNOW YOU DESERVED A BETTER KID!
They can't hear me.
I better not be dead cuz this really sucks.
I never cared for the sound of being alone…
Oh, damn…now I'm Neil Diamond.
Hey! Hey, God? You there God? It's me Margaret…
Damn no…I mean darn…sorry…it's me Daisy.
But Margaret is French for Daisy…Marguerite…I know cuz I looked it up…one day…when I was really bored.
I wonder if that's my real name…guess I'll never know.
S'better n' poots
Not funny…no laughing…gotta talk to God
So…it's me Daisy or maybe Marguerite…you remember…right…Mary Sue?
I know I haven't really talked to you in…well in a really long time. I even told that poor Hannah lady I didn't believe in you…but I guess maybe a part of me still does. Hell, I got that catechism stuffed shoved down my throat for sixteen years. I guess I got something out of it.
Anyway…
Are you there? Can you hear me?
I'm sorry for all the stupid stuff I did. I just want…need…yeah, the Sisters said God gives you what you need. I need to get back to my parents. I'm pretty sure they need me so if you can hear me and you aren't too mad about all that stuff I shouldna done…can you just give me my body back…
And let me go home?
Day 125 – Medical lab outside Daisy's room – 1600 hours
Jemma stood watching the security monitor that showed Daisy's room. May and Coulson alternately sat or paced in the area she had sectioned off, hoping it was safely away from the blue electrical field. Rarely did they look to the camera or make eye contact with anyone watching. Fitz had returned to the science lab, taking the new data he'd observed with him. He monitored Daisy's progress from a screen there.
"It's been almost six hours." Elena commented.
Mack had returned to command to brief the others and check on the disturbance in St. Louis. Piper and Davis were anxious to know what had transpired as they prepared their team to investigate the anomaly there.
"They should probably take a break…" Elena surmised, watching from a few feet away.
Jemma shook her head. "Other than for absolute necessities, they refuse to leave. It's pointless to make that suggestion."
Elena pursed her lips and nodded. "Do you feel there's a chance?" She asked tentatively.
Letting out a soft breath, Jemma shook her head. "I don't know. This is all so…so incomprehensible. There's no precedent…no studies to help find answers." She slammed a hand on the table. "I don't have an idea of what questions even to ask." The doctor let out several short frustrated breaths.
"I wish I could help." Elena spoke quietly, laying a hand on Jemma's shoulder.
The young doctor smiled and gave a quick nod.
"Jemma!" Coulson's voice came through the monitor. "I think you better get in here."
Simmons looked to the screen to see the Director looking straight at the camera. If his voice did not belay his urgency, his face certainly did.
With a quick look at Elena, Jemma turned and hurried into the room.
