Knitting Lessons

"Granny, can you teach me how to knit like you?" Dominique asked, approaching her grandmother in her creaky wooden rocking chair.

"Of course I can, dear, but why do you want to learn all of a sudden?" Molly asked, looking at her young granddaughter curiously.

"Victoire and I both have blankets that you knitted us, and I want the baby to have one too, but I don't want to give her mine," Dominique explained matter-of-factly.

"What baby, love?" Molly reached out to brush back the child's blonde curls.

"Maman's baby," she answered. "In her tummy."

"Ah, I see," Molly said, smiling softly. Another grandchild, how wonderful. "Alright then, come here, my sweet girl."

She patted her knees, and Dominique happily scrambled up onto her grandmother's lap. The little girl nestled herself into Molly's bosom, eagerly awaiting directions.

"Right, well the first thing we need to decide on is what pattern to make," Molly said. "Do you want stripes or checkers or maybe something else? We could do zig-zags if you wanted."

"Checkers!"

"Alright then, pick out three colours that you want to use for it, darling," Molly instructed, summoning her basket of yarn so Dominique could sort through it and select the yarn she wanted.

Dominique pulled out a skein of dark purple, one of light blue, and one of dusty pink. It was an odd combination of colours, but no matter. If it would make Dominique happy, Molly would go along with any colour combination she wanted.

"Okay, so first we need to get the yarn on the needles, like this, you see?" Molly carefully showed her granddaughter how to hold the knitting needles and loop the yarn over, pulling it through.

"Can I try?"

"Of course."

Dominique wrapped her little hands around the wooden needles, and Molly carefully guided them, helping her cast a few stitches onto the needle. It took a little while to get enough stitches for a full square, but Molly was patient, and more than happy to spend as much time with her granddaughter as it took.

"Okay, now that we've got enough, we're going to turn the needle around, alright? And then we'll make the next row like this."

Molly did the first few stitches on her own again, showing Dominique how to do it properly, before the young girl was reaching out to do it herself. The stitches were loose and a bit sloppy, but that was more than alright. That was the beauty of handmade gifts - they didn't have to be perfect, they just needed to be made with love.

After a while, Dominique's movements slowed to a stop, her eyes fluttering closed and her head dropping against her grandmother's chest. Molly smiled, carefully pulled the needles out of the child's grasp, setting the project aside. As she curled up on Molly's lap, fast asleep, Molly summoned the sweater she had been working on before. She smiled to herself, quite happy with the day. There was absolutely nothing better than spending the afternoon with her grandchild. Except maybe finding out that she would soon have another.
