"This is a really stupid idea."
The grumbling of Bill's voice caught Will's attention. He promptly shushed his brother. They needed to time things perfectly.
"We've already stolen food from these guys, they won't hold back on us this time." The voice of his brother came from his left side again, annoying him even more. "Especially considering what we're doing this time."
He turned to face his brother. "That's the whole idea. We want 'em to bring their guns."
He heard Bill sigh. "Well I don't wanna die."
"Look I know what I'm doing, you know what you're doing. This is our shot at freedom, at getting home." He lowered his voice, at the realization that his voice became rather loud. "And if Azriel and his loonies catch us, we can always just blame Kilian." He almost chuckled at his brother's shocked expression. "Just kidding, can't throw him under the bus twice, now can we?"
He turned his attention back to the task at hand, only slightly hearing his brother muttering. "Shouldn't have dragged them here in the first place."
Bringing Kilian and the girl here had only ever sent a slight twinge of guilt up Will's spine. He couldn't really care less about the girl, but Kilian was their friend, their brother. At the same time though, life wasn't really fair and Kilian was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, why should he feel guilty? He wanted to tell this to Bill. His brother, even though he would never admit it out loud, was obviously drowning in guilt. He had always been the softer of the two. His rough exterior hid the soft spot that he had for Kilian's girl.
He had always had to put up with his brother's less than ideal worries, but couldn't ever fathom the idea of abandoning him. The promise their mother made them say would always be stuck in his head.
They both lived by that promise, looking after each other. Heck, eventually even looking out for Kilian. The three dogs knew how to live out on the streets, Kilian showed them everything they needed to know. Occasionally the got themselves into a bit of trouble, but nothing ever too serious. All three were happy, they had found a decent spot to sleep and usually kept each other up well into the night.
"Will! Will!" Hushed shouting came from his brother, who was gesturing towards the door of the fireworks building. A short, with a tattered blue hat came out and stood there a moment, heaving slightly. He was muttering to himself, too distracted to notice that he had left the door wide open.
"Damn hard work, dam fireworks, damn Jim and his music, abandoning me like that- you'll be finding more junk in your yard for a long time..." They watched as he walked off and quickly made their way inside.
The entire building would be on fire soon enough.
