Starry Night
She swallowed a lump in her throat as she tried to ignore the pain in her chest. Nothing she ever did was good enough. Her eyes watered as she gazed into the starry night. She let out a deep breath, the air coming out in a long white smoke. What was she doing? She couldn't do anything right, to the point that she got fired for it. She's a little clumsy, sure, but she didn't think her faults would get her fired from the café. Things were finally looking up for her, she just made a new friend. Got to spend a whole night and day with him, even though they both lost quite a bit of sleep because of it. She was so happy for a week, then she fell into a pile of dishes, breaking them all. That was her work's final straw with her. They fired her on the spot, after making sure to bitch her out first.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of her phone. She didn't want to talk to anyone but she knew only one person could be calling. Her only friend was calling, she smiled sadly at the phone knowing that she'd let it go to voicemail. She vaguely remembered that tonight was their game night since she has tomorrow off, now she was off forever.
"Damn it!" She cursed, smacking the same bench she met him on. She froze, softly petting the bench as an apology, "I'm sorry bench, I'm very thankful for you. Things are hard right now."
She knew it couldn't speak but her gentle nature still made her feel guilty for taking out her anger on it. Her phone rang again, she was an hour late, too bad she wasn't gonna show. She knew she had to answer. He'd be worried if she didn't. She took a deep breathe and picked up the phone her voice coming out soft, cracking a little while she tried to keep it steady, "Sorry Yata, I'm not coming tonight."
"Eh?" His voice came out annoyed, "Shad, we have a tie to break! You can wuss out now! Come on, get outta your house and come over here!"
"I'm sorry Yata", her voice came out more strained hearing how badly he wanted her to come over.
"Don't apologize! Just come over! I can walk you since it's getting late", she smiled at his offer knowing that he was probably worried about her being out alone.
"I'm not home", she sighed, dragging a hand through her red bangs.
"What?! Did work keep you late? I'll go get you from there then!" Her chest stung when he said work.
She let out a shaky breath trying to hold back tears, "I'm never any good."
Before he could respond she ended the call. Well, he was probably worried now, she'll deal with him tomorrow. She shut off her phone when she saw him calling again. She didn't need his concern, she wanted to be alone! She wanted to wallow in this sadness, she wanted a hug. That last thought caught her off guard, Yata wasn't mushy, she didn't have anyone to hug. He's a fun friend but whenever she tries to hug him or something he starts stuttering and freaking out. She growled refraining from throwing her phone and pulled at her hair. She left out a frustrated scream into the night. This bench was at a park so no one was around to hear it thankfully. She flopped onto the bench, hissing when her head hit it pretty hard. She groaned and stared at the stars. She took in a deep breath and focused all her thoughts on how pretty the sky was.
She was starting to calm down a little while watching the sky, a shooting star whizzing past causing her to frantically wish that she could be good enough. Her eyes watered again, gravity pulling the tears down the sides of her face and into her hair before she could stop them. Those tears that escaped caused her to quickly sit up trying to wipe her eyes frantically as if that would stop more from coming but it didn't. Her tears flowed faster than she could stop, she was speechless, staring at her hands as tears fell onto her open palms, "Shit…"
She sat there for a while letting her big hot tears roll down her face and splash into her open palms, waiting for it to end. A noise caused her head to shoot up as she heard a voice that shouldn't be here, "Goddamn it Shadow! Where are you!"
"Yata", she whimpered out, her voice breaking. Finally she let out a sob, a loud sob, not holding back anymore. She wrapped her arms around herself trying to hug away her own pain. Her sobs ringing out through the night as her walls she tried to build to keep the pain in crumbled to the ground.
"Damn it! Shadow is that you?!" She heard his voice yell out, as the telling sign of a skateboard told her he was approaching, and fast.
He stopped in front of her, "I thought you'd be here. Damn it! What's wrong?"
He looked at the huddled form of his friend, "F-fired!"
Her voice just managed to get out the word before she erupted into louder sobs. She could hear him growl at that before sitting down next to her, "Come here."
She looked up to see the blushing man in front of her, his arms open to her, "B-but you hate hugs!"
"I don't hate hugs, I just don't hug girls much", his face reached a pretty shade of red that made Shadow's tears stop. He was looking anywhere but her, his arms were open to her and his cheeks were a soft red as he had a small frown on his face. He looked really cute.
She brought her hand to his shoulder causing him to look at her. She took that as her chance to give him a tiny smile. Her eyes were sparkling in the moonlight. Her tears caused her eyes to almost glow as it looked like shooting stars were falling down her face. A sweet smile graced her face as a small blush of her own lit up her cheeks. His hazel eyes widened as he took her in, she looked beautiful.
She wrapped her arms tightly around his waist, his arms slowly closing around her small frame, pulling her as close as he could. She let out a soft relieved breath into his shoulder and inhaled. He smelled like a warm campfire on a cold night. It was like his presence was dulling the pain in her heart.
"What happened Shad?" His voice came out deeper than normal from him trying to comfort her.
"I fell into a pile of dishes and they fired me on the spot", she muttered out onto his shoulder.
He rubbed her back, "We'll find you a new job."
"They told me with being as clumsy as I am, I'll never hold a job for long", she whimpered out into him.
"Well screw them, the dishes aren't worth nearly as much as you are. We'll find a place that will respect you", he told her, holding her tighter.
She laughed softly into him, her breath tickling his neck. He felt warmth travel up to his ears as his eyes darted up to the sky, trying to distract himself from the girl in his arms, "Maybe…"
"Let's worry about it tomorrow", she softly told him, loosening her grip on him, "I believe we have a tie to break."
He didn't know why but he didn't want her to let go yet, "It can wait! Let's just... sit here… for a bit…"
His face felt like lava had been poured over it when he said that but her reaction made it all the worse, "Enjoying the hug? Well, you probably won't give me another one for a while so… I guess I'll take what I can get."
"Don't take this the wrong way! I just want to make sure you're okay before I destroy you in Smash!" He retorted, his usual voice coming out loud and clear into the night.
She laughed out loud this time, nuzzling her face into the crook of his neck, "As if! We both know Jigglypuff and I are unstoppable!"
"Just wait till I use Ike against you!" He let go, glaring at her challenge.
"Oh yes, if you can catch me", her arms returned to her sides as she gave him her cheesy grin, "Now, let's go!"
She got up and held a hand out to him. He scolded but took it before pulling her back into the bench, "First one as my apartment gets to set the rules!"
She sat there for a moment watching him scramble into his board, "No fair! I can't skate!"
"Guess I'm setting the rules!" He taunted.
"Wait!!! I thought you were supposed to keep me safe, not leave me in the dust!"
"Fine, I won't skate", and with that he took off leaving her running after him as fast as she could. She'd wipe that smirk of his face later when she pounded Ike off the stage.
"Jerk!" Her voice called out after him, but her laughs seemed to tell him she wasn't really mad as they raced away into the night.
