Voice of the Sun

Modern and Reincarnation AU + Gods

What would you do if your voice, being carried along by the winds from a simple willow tree, was discovered by the god of light himself?

Angel, my angel, my wondrous angel

How could you leave me to rot?

A storm struck me down and the earth swallowed me whole

How could you leave me to rot?

Kaleo's brother once told him a story about a willow tree and the sun who helped it grow.

He said the tree was once a human, a human that the sun loved very much but like all of humanity, they were mortal and had died a peaceful death, buried in a field with no plaque. They only wanted to be remembered only in memory, not in stone. The sun, in grief, hid himself from the world for several years and finally appeared to plant a willow tree where his love was buried.

My heart was broken, my soul left to wander

How could you leave me to rot?

Bright red over my grave, a symbol of my pain

Angel, why did you leave me to rot

That same willow tree stands outside of his childhood home and Kaleo takes some time off from school each month to visit his hometown, always returning to the willow tree. Kaleo has wondered if the story was really true, if the sun really did plant a willow tree in honor of his departed love. Thoughts like those had lead him to look into the history of the town, finding a paragraph about a grave that would be behind his home, right where the weeping willow stands today.

Raven, my raven, my lovely raven

I'm sorry for leaving so soon

The storm kept me at bay, the earth trapping me

I'm sorry for leaving so soon

Kaleo steps out on the patio, eyeing the willow tree with a smile. Every time he comes back, it feels like the old tree has changed. It physically looks the same, the lance-shaped leaves green as ever and the weeping branches just as gloomy as they always have been. But there's a small feeling in Kaleo's chest, a feeling that it has changed in some way. He goes to sit underneath its sunken branches, the cool autumn wind gently gliding through the leaves, and minutes later, he's asleep.

I promise to leave you in peace

I'm sorry for leaving so soon

None shall disturb you, never to take you

Raven, I'm sorry for leaving so soon

Hours later, deep into the night, something is telling him to awake, to search for something, someone maybe. That's what Kaleo does, standing from his spot and stepping out of the willow's protection. Nothing is out of the ordinary as far as he can tell so Kaleo walks around the weeping willow, seeing a couple of small red flowers in bloom just beyond the drooping leaves.

Angel, my angel, my heavenly angel

(Raven, my raven, my gentle raven)

How could you leave me to rot?

(I'm sorry for leaving so soon)

The storm took you from me, is this all true?

(I swear it's true, please let me rest)

Angel, is it all true?

(Raven, I swear it, I swear it)

Kaleo senses a presence behind him but feels it's not a threat. It's familiar, his mind recognizes, it seems so familiar. He looks over his shoulder and blue eyes meet a tender gold. The man doesn't look like anyone he's met but he looks so familiar. His mind gives him a name, a name Kaleo has only heard in myths and a name that came from his brother's story. Kaleo remembers something but it isn't a memory from this life.

Angel... my dear angel...

(Raven... my beloved raven...)

No storm can keep us apart, not even the earth...

(I'll see you in the next life, whenever that may be...)

"Hello, Apollo," Kaleo says, a small smile beginning to grow. "You heard me?"

The god can only chuckle, "I always did. I had just been waiting for the right moment."

Under the stars, the clear sky without a cloud in sight, the wind carrying their song, they kissed and Kaleo takes in a slow influx of memories, memories that were once his own but in another time.

We shall meet under the willow tree...

The story is true and he is living proof.
