Lily Luna Potter was very proud of her gorgeous red hair and cared for it as if it were her prized possession. In fact, it was her prized possession, and anyone who dared go near it, or touch it, or insult it, would be jinxed or hexed instantly and would have to deal with Lily tormenting them for the next 6 months.
They would soon discover that Lily was a bad enemy to have, and they would then regret ever laying a finger on her precious fiery locks.
Lily was 6 on this particular occasion; the Potter siblings were playing at a Muggle playground, and that's when it happened.
"Mummy," a little girl exclaimed, pointing directly at Lily. "Her head looks funny. Look how much hair she has."
The mother of the child tried, unsuccessfully, to quiet the little girl.
"Her ugly hair is too long. It goes all the way past her knees!" The girl giggled, the Mum immediately clamping a hand over her mouth.
"That is no way to talk about a stranger," the mother responded, throwing the little girl over her shoulder and walking away from the playground, disappearing amongst the trees.
"I agree with that girl, Lily. Your hair is getting a bit too long." Albus commented, trying to grab onto Lily's luscious hair.
Lily flung herself off the swing and kicked Albus in the face in response.
"Fuck off!" Lily spat.
"Lily Luna Potter! Stop that cussing this instance!" Ginny screeched, half-heartedly tackling her fuming daughter to the ground.
"How dare they be mean to my precious hair!" Lily shrieked, her face growing redder by the second.
"No six-year-old should be swearing like a grown adult!" Ginny shot back.
"But I am way grown up, Mummy!" Lily complained as she flipped her curtain of red hair into Ginny's face. Ginny grimaced as she received a mouthful of hair and her eyes watered from the sharp impact.
"Not grown up enough. Lulu, you need to get your hair cut. It's getting in the way of everyone and everything. It's too wild and out of control," Harry tried to say soothingly.
It had no effect on the angry child.
"I can do what I like with my hair, Harry!" Lily snapped, tackling her way out of her mother's grasp.
"Don't call your father Harry. He's your dad." Ginny sighed.
"Mummy! Jamie keeps hitting me!" Albus whined, running over to stand by Ginny's side.
"It's about time we head home and get a nap, then. Shall we?" Harry suggested.
"Sounds like a plan to me," Ginny replied.
"I. Don't. Want. To. Go. Home!" Lily shrieked, stamping her foot stubbornly.
Harry picked Lily up and carried the fighting child down the gravel path out of sight.
"Come on, boys." Ginny smiled at her sons, taking a hand in each of her own. They followed Harry and Lily down the path.
"Lulu, there is no point in covering your hair in tin foil when it can just be ripped away!" Ginny said in exasperation, pulling another piece of foil from Lily's hair.
"But, Mummy, they want to cut my amazing hair!" Lily protested, throwing herself onto the nearest couch, tripping over her now ankle-length hair and face planting into it instead.
"Honey, it really is getting ridiculous. You're shedding like a dog, tripping over it, and it's starting to look a little bit out of place. Besides, I'm sick of spending an entire night and morning doing your hair." Ginny sighed.
"But it's my hair, Mummy. I can't be mean to my hair. It has feelings too, Mummy!" Lily gasped, outraged.
Ginny sucked in a heavy breath and released it slowly. "Lily," Ginny said patiently, "your hair doesn't have feelings; it's dead."
"It is not dead, Mummy!" Lily howled, kicking her legs out in frustration.
"I'm going to get Gran to cut your hair next week, and there will not be any complaints," Ginny said sternly, her patience beginning to dissipate.
"But it's my bloody hair!" Lily whined.
"And I'm your mother, Lily. I can make my children's decisions as long as they live under my roof," Ginny responded matter-of-factly.
Lily was having absolutely no success avoiding her family. She had tried hiding in the abandoned cupboard; she had tried hiding in the large apple orchards that surrounded their house; she had even tried sitting at the bottom of the lake, but she had run out of oxygen and had to resurface.
"Come on, Lulu. Let's get you inside, you silly girl." Harry smiled, pulling the sodden girl from the patch of grass near the water's edge.
"Dad, I can't stand you lot any more!" Lily wailed into his shoulder as they made their way back to the house.
"You'd look a lot smarter and more powerful if you cut your hair at least to waist length." Harry smiled down at her.
"Powerful?" Lily perked up.
"Yes. Very, very powerful. Extremely and utterly powerful," Harry said seriously.
"Fine! As long as it gives me power!" Lily said excitedly, leaping off of Harry's shoulders and landing deftly on her feet.
"Gin, guess what's going to happen." Harry prompted later that evening as he and Ginny lay in their bed.
"You didn't?" Ginny giggled, rolling onto her side to face her husband.
"I did!" Harry whooped, lightly kissing his wife.
"But how?"
"I told her she'd be almighty and powerful." Harry chuckled.
Ginny fell into a fit of laughter, grabbing her stomach to stop it from cramping from the infectious laughter.
"She was all excited and even did that little happy dance she does when things go her way!" Harry chortled.
Ginny grinned in response and curled into her husband.
"Na, na na, na, na!" James yelled, dancing around the kitchen in his pajamas.
"Stop it!" Lily shrieked.
"My lil sis is gonna get her hair cut today!" James cheered, pulling Lily off her seat by her hair and dragging her around on the kitchen floor.
"Fuck you, you fucking arsehole!" Lily shrieked, kicking and hitting James' legs.
James began laughing even louder as he now ran around the kitchen, pulling Lily's hair as if it was a leash on a dog.
"James Sirius Potter, stop harassing your little sister!" Ginny shouted as she came into the room to examine the noise.
"I. Am. Not. Little!" Lily huffed, pulling herself back onto a chair and gathering her hair into her lap.
"Are so!" James shot back snarkily.
"Shut up, you dung head," Lily mumbled.
"Mum, can Albus and I cut her hair?" James asked as Lily came into the shared bathroom.
"Noooooooooo!" Lily howled as she threw herself onto the cold tiles.
"Sounds like a plan to me, my favourite son!" Ginny laughed.
"No! No! No! No! They. Can. Not. Touch. My. Babies!" Lily wailed.
"It isn't even real, Lily," James groaned.
"It is alive, it has feelings, tell him, Mum!" Lily whined.
"Not all of it is, Lily." Ginny sighed.
"Not true! Not true! Not true," Lily said, angrily clenching her fists.
"What's this?" Albus asked as he entered the bathroom and stepped over Lily.
"I'm gonna give Lulu a haircut!" James celebrated.
"Are not!" Lily cried.
"Are to!" James howled with laughter.
"Well then. I'm off to the shops," Ginny said as she left the bathroom.
"Why did she let you?" Lily mumbled.
"Because she loves me the most," James replied as he snipped at Lily's hair.
James and Albus had tied Lily to the chair so that she wouldn't escape once more.
While James ruined Lily's beautiful hair, Lily patted a Pygmy puff, who, one of the many animals that roamed the Potters' house, had jumped up into Lily's lap to see what the excitement was about. Her hair was looking worse by the minute and James began to get anxious. Not able to handle the look of his handicraft, James dropped the scissors and ran from the bathroom.
"Oi, you git, untie me!" Lily squealed.
"I can't," James yelled from another room
"Why not?" Lily asked.
"It's horrid," James admitted sheepishly.
"Let me see!" Lily complained.
"Albus!" James called, panicked.
"Mummy. He. Ruined. My. Fucking. Hair!" Lily screamed.
"Lu, it isn't too bad," Ginny tried to assure her as she tried to stifle her giggles.
James had a very good job at turning Lily's head into an odd shape, strands of hair ending at different lengths.
"It is. It is. It. Fucking. Is!" Lily shrieked, slamming her bedroom door. Lily angrily threw herself onto her pillows and tried unsuccessfully to hide behind her hair.
James had cut one side of her hair so short that it was bald. Meanwhile the other side was a whole range of different lengths and thickness.
Lily was horrified, she would never forgive James, never.
"You. Are. Not. Touching. My. Hair! Lily shrieked, throwing herself off her parent's bed.
"But Lulu, it looks awful." Ginny complained, sitting up on her elbows to take in the sight of Lily.
"You. Are. Not. Going. To. Regrow. My. Hair! Lily shrieked again as she stormed from the bedroom.
"I can cut it better than Jamie can." Ginny called out as she leant back on her pillows.
"I don't care." Ginny heard Lily mumble under her breath.
Lily sighed, why hadn't it grown back yet?
Lily was trying to cut the mismatched hair and was progressing successfully. Lily knew she'd probably look like a boy, but at least it would be all the same length.
She was at her Gran's house and had stolen her Gran's scissors. She was now perched on the roof of the Burrow and was watching her hair float away in the wind.
"Ah, all better." Lily sighed as she cut the last strands. She looked at her reflection in the hand-held mirror.
Satisfied with her job, Lily tucked the accessories into a pocket and climbed down the building, holding the water pipe for support. Reaching halfway, Lily jumped from a ledge and hurtled herself to the ground. At the last minute, Lily pulled herself onto a rope and landed back on her feet.
"You should have cut your own hair in the first place." James sighed.
"It's better now." Lily smiled and rubbed her head fondly.
"I'm sorry," James said apologetically.
"Get over it!" Lily huffed.
And with that, Lily turned on her heels and waltzed back into the house, holding her head high.
She was now as powerful and beautiful as her dad had promised, and Lily believed nothing could ruin her mighty powers, not even her stupid short hair could stop her.
